Hi! Well, I talked to Kevin last night- I had called while they were at rehearsal and left a message, and he called me after midnight (I said I'd be up late :). Apparently it's going really well, they've started running through the show now, because everybody finally knows the songs. It must be a bitch to play when you don't have sheet music to go by! Anyway, it's looking good. He said they *really* want to play here, so they'll be flexible about the cost and hopefully about the venue, as well- I just don't know what sort of a place we'll be able to get for them to play. There are two concert halls on campus, but the Center for the Arts is notoriously snarky about renting them out. The next step is for my friend who is really organizing this to talk to him, which will with any luck happen this weekend. And I managed to get some poop about the shows out of him, too- they're aiming for a 2-hour set with 9 songs from _Warpaint_ and 16 others, then the 15-minute intermission in Philly and two encores "if we get them", I don't think they need to worry about that! :) In Albany Mitch Elrod will play a 45-minute guitar-and-vocal set beforehand, which he'd probably do at Wesleyan too, since it's close to Albany and they don't have to worry about accommodations or anything. About the QEII: In Kevin's words, "It's a seedy dive of a place", kind of punked-out, with a chain-link fence in front of the stage and all that. Apparently Happy hates it, but he's played there and liked it, so they're doing it anyway. It may be an 18+ show, it depends on what the owner, who is out of town until next week, says. If not, I got his word that I'll get in, so I'm psyched. And today I went downtown and bugged Main St. Records- they need the name of AG's distributor- Vickie, do you know it? I'm going to give the manager AG's number anyway, so he can contact them directly. Wow. I feel like I'm on a mission from God. :) *---------------------------------------------* | Meredith Tarr | | *** | | "Living in the gap between past and future" | | *** | | mtarr@eagle.wesleyan.edu | *---------------------------------------------* ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 21 Feb 92 15:42:07 CST From: stern@chem.nwu.edu (Charlotte Stern) Subject: TSHIRT IS AWESOME Hey all you ectolytes! This T-Shirt is fantastic. I just got it in the mail today (I was surprised cos I'd forgotten I'd even ordered one). It truly is grand and I can't wait to wear it to the Peter Himmelman concert I'm attending Sat. Night. Way to go Jessica! BTW, did I miss it, or did someone say how to get involved with the ecto group project thing? Do I just give Vickie blank tapes. ? Oh, and BTW vickie, I assume I should just stop by and pick up the SIG, right? I really enjoed all those trucking stories. Great stuff. And encourage her to mention the fact that she has other albums out :-) Yeah, go ahead and send the tapes to me for the stuff you want, no problem. Again, it's really nice to see you in Ecto. I'll give replying to your letter a try, though the last time I e-mailed you (durin the "psychological abuse" gaffa flame war) it didn't work...it bounced twice :-( > On a Happy-er note: > I just received a post-cat (card) from Happy yesterday. "utterly enjoyable" is a better way to describe this material. on a related note, i recall vickie saying that she felt that the early stuff with the old fiddler was better. i checked the band lineup and discovered that dave standohel (or however you spell his name) fiddled all the way through the history of the band. there was a drummer change after the first two eps - robin adnan joined. i think he's a much more talented musician than the old drummer - noticed the difference immediately as soon as i popped in _old lead_ in fact. adnan *plays* the drums instead of just keeping a beat. but on to other topics... Actually, I'm sorry i missed them too, though I wouldn't have >wanted to be in the front rows :-) i bought tickets the day of the show for them so i ended up with balcony seats - far away from too much activity (but not far enough that one of the group climbed up the wall and stepped over me during one of the skits where they wandered around the audience). >The reviewer killed me though, she seemed to take them *soooooo* seriously! well, on one hand, they were a lot of fun - i think that "fun" was the medium they wanted to use to convey what they were getting at: the uppityness of the art world. sure, that is a tired subject, but at the same time, it does need to be repeated every once in a while. and while they repeated the mes- sage, they sure did not repeat the medium. the performance was serious, as was its intent. but it was also very entertaining (imagine if you can a theatre full of people throwing rolls of toliet paper all around - more than even rocky horror). >Believe me, I've always been *very* careful whenever I did hitchhike. i only hitched a ride once - and it was by accident. back in high school, i used to run track and during the season, i'd always grab a ride on a late bus that ran from the high school to the western parts of broome county in new york state where i lived. one evening i missed the bus and no one i knew was heading out that way, so i started walking. a while down he road, a car pulled over and the driver asked for directions. i happened to know where he was going so i swapped directions for a lift. worked out well - but the guy was so freaky (once i started talking to him that is - he was normal looking), i pretty much decided that hitching was no way to travel. tempest!john@sunne.east.sun.com (John M. Sadly, Kate's mother Hannah Bush passed away on Valentine's Day. The cause of death has not been released to the public. Cards and flowers may be sent to East Wickham Farm in Welling, Kent. A suggestion (not made by the family, but by me) would be to donate a little something to your favorite charity, or to Kate's favorite charity, The Terrence Higgins Trust in London, in Hannah's name. The family is in seclusion and are not giving any interviews. This information comes directly from Kate's friend Lisa (KBC), via Peter and Krys at Homeground. I hope there won't be a lot of speculation about how much this might delay Kate's album and tour. Obviously, they will be delayed, but we must respect Kate's grief and mourning period and know that it is more important than any material items we might be waiting for. It's a sad, sad day for all who care about Kate and her family. Dead Can Dance supplied some of the music for the spectacle, which wasn't nearly as enjoyable as the opening ceremonies. Thanks, Jessica! Yesterday I washed it with some other things in hot water in hopes I could shrink it some; it is one of those damnable large larges where the medium would have probably fit me perfectly but this is a little looser than I like. However, the design more than makes up for it. I can hardly wait to start answering the inevitable "who/what/where the hell is Happy Rhodes?" questions. It's probably about time I order another Warpaint so my current copy can become a wandering loaner; I loaned it to a friend so he could tape it for himself (I did urge him to buy it, but you know how these starving students are) and now he is having trouble prying it away from his friend who taped it for him. Next step: plugging it for radio airplay. There's this one nifty station that has studios in the local Hilton hotel; I'm tempted to figure out which DJ would be best to expose it to and just traipse up there some day and say "here, play this." If you aren't above seeing pretentious art films, I highly recommend "Prospero's Books". I can't easily describe why I liked it, but it combines the dialogue from _The Tempest_ with the most complex and entrancing visual design I've ever seen. I found myself wishing that it wouldn't end; it grabbed my imagination and started stretching it, and my imagination still hasn't snapped back. It does manage to avoid making the plot of _The Tempest_ very clear or very evident, though. If you don't mind sitting back, watching all the pretty colors and artfully nude actors, and listening to John Gielgud read, you should have a great time. It also takes an interesting literary approach to the whole play, in that I gathered that the film was what was going on in Prospero's imagination and the play was portrayed as something that Prospero was writing. The only dialogue not from _The Tempest_ was descriptions of incredibly exotic (but quite possibly real) antique books, usually backed with odd photographs and animations depicting their contents. This of course was yet another of the things that hooked me, since I am among other things a bibliophile. "Prospero's Books" was directed by Peter Greenaway, infamous for "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover", as well as a bunch of other really weird and usually artsy films. I'll be seeing Robyn Hitchcock tomorrow, and am curious as to what I'll find. As far as I know I have never heard anything by him before. I'm going mainly on the recommendations and mentions made by other Ectophiles and Love-Hounds, and because I've been feeling the need to culturally enrich myself. ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
