Date: Tue, 11 Feb 92 2:08:02 CST Vickie here. Hi, just wanted to give a quick welcome to Tom K. and say hi! HI! Thanks for the Dirty Linen review, much appreciated! Do you need an FAQ? Let me know and I'll send you the latest. Bob Brown, I got your tape today, thanks (how was your trip to Boston??) David Blank-Edelman, got your tapes too, thanks! They'll be back on the way to you shortly. I got my my Ecto T-shirt today!! Yay!!! Thank you Jessica for it. Thank you Barry too! I'm pleased! Court sent me the Tori Amos cassette (**THANK YOU**!) and I do like it quite a bit. I've listened to it twice now and it's nice. I didn't care for Tori's first album, which is why I pretty much stayed quiet while all the Tori talk was going on, but this one is *eons* better! Ken Brownfield, don't let what I played you keep you away from the new one if you should see it and can get it. This one is better, really. Lots better! Angleos sent me more Eleftheria and it's very wonderful! Thanks a bunch! Thanks again to Jeff Burka for the Betty tape, it's very fun! I really do appreciate people sending me music, because now that I don't have a job where I get lots of promos anymore, and I can't afford to go buy anything, you all and Sue down in Kansas City are my only sources for new music (new=I haven't heard it, no matter how old it is) which I need to keep my radio show going. Thanks *SO* much!!! Stephen Golden, I was glad to see your post about going to the show at the auditorius where Happy's playing (the group you saw sounds *very* interesting too!) but there's still a worry. Happy's not acoustic (though she can be) and it's the electronics they're worried about. Acapella & acoustics echoes sound nice. Will electric guitars and synths? We'll see. Meredith, I'll ask Happy the next time we talk about the QEII and if it's a 21 place. I know that Happy and Kevin would get you in. Don't worry about it. Welcome again Tom, Ken, Keith, Karl, bear, Beth, David, & anyone else I might have missed or don't know about. Remember, if you'd like an FAQ, and can't ftp it (Jessica, I forgot to ask you, is the new one in the archives?) please let me know. Vickie ps, I said my final apologies to gaffa for entering into the flame war fray. I love gaffa, I really do, so I will *try* my *darndest* not to get into any more flame wars! Cross my heart and hope to live. ======================================================================== Date: 10 February 1992 14:23:14 CST From: Subject: Allerlei Barry is right--ecto is indeed unusually quiet today. But it may make everyone feel better to know that between Friday afternoon and now, there have been only two postings to comp-academic-freedom-talk. Would that this meant the clear and present danger to the academic freedom of computing was over. Fat chance. Monkees afficianados on ecto with access to yesterday's _Chicago Sun-Times _ may be interested in the article that appeared in the arts section about Michael Nesmith, who will be appearing locally at the Cubby Bear Lounge this Saturday. It mentions, among other things, his new compilation album on Rhino, and his coming up years ago with an idea that ultimately turned into MTV. If demand is sufficient, I would be willing to send it on to someone with a scanner, as the easiest way to share it with you all. In the same section, there's an essay by James J. Kilpatrick on "The vast Weltanschauung of word wavelengths." It concludes: Do not write down to your reader! Do not write over your reader's head! We should aim at a wavelength on which 90 percent of our prospective readers will understand 90 percent of the words we use. Another 90 percen t of the words we employ should be understandable in context. What about that lonesome 1 percent of words that are wholly unfamil- iar--words such as non sequitur and Weltanschauung? Let the reader look up the hard words. A writer has to have some fun. It was gratifying to see the way I write getting this sort of validation. I, of course, have never been one to let myself be fettered by 1 percent ceilings. :-) (Those who have only been reading these pages for a short time, and who may not be accustomed to receiving this sort of treatment from me, will probably welcome the reassurance that I'm considered essentially harmless by most of the veterans on this list.) My first or second year of graduate school, I was shown my annual graduate student evaluation by my advisor, and noticed that one of the dimensions listed was "ability to see connections in related materials." In the years since, it has repeatedly become apparent to me that however I was rated on that dimension (I don't remember), it pales in comparison to my ability to see connections in unrelated materials. This was really driven home to me today, when in the space of a single morning, Alex Haley died and Bonnie Blair won a gold medal in speedskating. The thought came to me that the ratings success of _Roots_ on TV was what first made the miniseries a big deal for the networks, and now two networks out of three are using the miniseries as part of their armamentarium to shoot for ratings success against the winter olympics. But even this may be nothing, as subtle connections go, compared to what has come to me even as I write this. Having played out my Win Stracke compilation for a while, I switch ed to the Suspended in Ecto tape. When the interview with Happy got to the poi nt where she observes "I like eerie things," I immediately thought of the issue of _Trains_ magazine I saw this morning, with a cover story on "The Life and Death of the Erie Lackawanna." Go figure. In response to the query in these pages by the Endomorphic Ecto Goddess-La dy :-) : I have seen the cinema's contribution to the field of panel analysis, _28 Up_, and was well impressed by it. I look forward to the sequel. I did manage, pending its arrival, to get in a fine double feature yesterday: my second viewing of _My Own Private Idaho_, which made the whole thing more lucid than it had been the first time around; (did the publicists ever think to hand out potatoes as a publicity stunt?) and _Let Him Have It_, a superb case study in the law-and-order _Weltanschauung_ run amok. I was also pleased to learn that up the street from the Three Penny, where these films were playing, Guild Books has been able to remain afloat for the time being; my contribution to the cause was to buy, among much else, an autographed copy of my acquaint- ance Wim Wiewel's new book on Chicago development and planning during Harold Washington's mayoralty, having unfortuntely missed his personal appearance at the store by one day. Strange turn of phrase: At this moment, _Fresh Air_ on NPR is doing an interview with Alex Chilton, late of the Box Tops and Big Star, in which he says of a long-ago colleague: "His name was Dan Pan, and still is." Personals to the Ectomorphic Ecto Goddess-Lady :-) : The check for the shirt will be in the mail real soon. BTW: Did my cc of the note to my comp center, apropos the recurrent server glitch that's been creating redundant copies of my postings, reach you (hopefully only once?) Also, I've been gettin g bounce messages from Laura Clifford's account for my postings; you might want to check with her about her receipt of ecto writ large. (Notwithstanding this particular style of writing, lest anyone say any- thing about it, I have never believed I would have a future as a gossip col- umnist :-).) I had to look up the postings from last week to figure out what the "cabba ge and underwear" reference was about; but it is indeed amusing. Apparently, none of Claudia's choirmates went on to become a leader of the Social Democrats or the Greens, judging from the absence of invective calling the incumbent chancellor "Helmut the Cabbage" :-) (in the native tongue, "Helmut der Kohl"). Cathy's version sounded much like one of Garrison Keillor's Lake Wobegon mono- logs. It would be especially appropriate if much of the underwear in question was our own Fuzzy Blue Vickie brand; but I can't escape the conclusion that if one attempted such visualization around many American offices, one might run the risk of being considered perverse :-). More next time. Mitch Pravatiner ____________________________ "Every man, everywhere, is the same when he's got his skin off." --E.Y. We're givin' 'em away! Date: Tue, 11 Feb 92 9:06:57 BST Pssst! Wanna buy an Ecto SiG? One careful owner. Lovely condition, original wrapping, yours for a fraction of the original cost. Fell off the back of a lorry, guv', dinnit, know what I mean? Wonderful plummage... Chicago Blue! Excellent vintage. Mind you there's only one left. But seriously folks. Due to a stuttering in the Ecto Moma's packaging system I have received *two* Ecto SiGs. Not even I can listen to both of them at once, so if anybody who is not due to receive one from her Vickieness would like an Ecto SiG I may be able to help. You get a first generation C100 full of Happyness, dubbed in Chicago by Vickie, in its original fuzzy blue packaging. What you don't get is a note addressed to you by Vickie (unless your name happens to be Steve too, not impossible - it does seem to be one of the more popular (nearly said "common" there, but that would be *quite* wrong) names here). More importantly you don't get a photo or keyring (apparently called a "key*chain*" in North America) featuring an Ecto era Happy with a selection of keyboards in the background. Sorry, but neither of my Ecto SiGs contained one so I don't have a spare. I'm sure Vickie would be willing to send a copy of the photo to complete the package, I gather there are none of the keythings left. Anyway, the tape itself is dead good. Two tracks off each of the 1st4, five Bartlett-Rhodes demos, an otherwise unavailable Happy song, and a snatch of Warpaint all interspersed with Happy talking to Vickie about her childhood, influences, music, and future plans in a really relaxed and informal way. Just great. If you haven't heard it you should. If you like Happy's music you'll love this tape. Guaranteed. Oh, and the price? It'll cost you an Email to me with your Snail Mail address (non-refundable). First come, first served. VAT excluded. Or is it true that the 1st 4 will be available on CD?? Woe is me! I guess I'll have to convert someone (besides Keith) and give them a gift of 4 moderately used & worn cassettes... B) Vickie, could you send me that FAQ? D) What's the date for Albany (and a contact phone # of some sort) ? That's not *too* far from here, its closer than Philly, and it would be great to see Happy! E) What's the news (if any) on HR#6 ? Perhaps all or most of these questions are answered in the FAQ, if so just ignore them and I'll figure it out :^) I have one story to contribute... last month I visited a friend in Newark, NJ (sorry woj, time was tight) and knowing her taste in music, I mentioned I had something that she had to listen to. When I said "Happy Rhodes", she said that she'd heard of her and that Warpaint was great! But that was all she said. So I asked, "What about the others?" "...*What* others??" "The other *four* !" So we engaged in a Happy binge right there. The interesting part of the story is that one of her friends has been in contact with Happy. (I'm not sure if this was prior to, or after they discovered Warpaint, or whether it was voice or mail.) Her friend had told Happy how great they thought Warpaint is... but apparently the fact that Happy had 4 other albums never came out in their conversations! I hope I may even meet some of you in Albany and/or Philadelphia in March! Hmmm, I got an odd package from some obscure post office box in New Jersey today. Can you guess what it was? Yup! I got my T-shirt. The blues, whites, and browns on its frontspiece took a few seconds to sort themselves into the familiar Ecto cover, but it looks great. I wear it with pride! Now I _am_ ecto! By the way, I'm glad I didn't order extra large, I probably would have gotten lost inside it. Do they make people larger on the East Coast these days? :) The response to the Central Bank of Ecto has been quite underwhelming. As always, we may need a prod here. Vickie, why don't we just start with a tape and see what happens? Anyone who wants to open a cassette account can do so. Others can simply send single tapes when the mood hits. Let's see what disasters happen, and fix them up! Ken D, most of your questions are answered in the FAQ, and I'll send you a copy (probably the seventeenth one you'll get). In there are instructions for getting copies of the various tapes. The WXPN interview is available from me, though Vickie is putting together a nicer version with some extra stuff that you may want to wait for. (Klaus, I sent you e-mail about this. Let me know if you don't get it.) woj queries: was it here that some mentioned that there is no naturally occuring blue colored foods? I don't remember anyone saying that on Ecto, but, hell, it wouldn't surprise me if it did. Any subject is liable to turn up here. However, I question the statement. How about blueberries? Definitely blue (well, a little bit purplish). How about mold growing on cheese? Blue (and even fuzzy!), admittedly not very appetizing. Some people even flower petals which include items unquestionably blue. BTW, woj, love the word 'ectorquoise'. However, for the life of me, I can't figure out what color that would be. :) A friend of Meredith made a pun about a 'Happy Roadie', which reminds me of something I've meant to post for a while, but is so insignificant it always slips my mind (actually, that's not all that uncommon). I regularly pass an advertising sign "Realty World, Rhoades Limited". I keep reading it as "Reality World, Rhodes Limited", though for Happy I guess the real world should be unlimited. (I told you it wasn't much.) You all have been murder on my music. I haven't played much "boyz with guitarz" recently. I reverted this weekend, and thoroughly enjoyed melting my speakers and frightening the neighbors with _Nevermind_ by Nirvana, _Weld_ by Neil Young, and a few older favorites. I expected the great live album by Neil with its heavily distorted guitars, but Nirvana was an extremely pleasant surprise after all the hype. It's been in my CD player three times ... so far.
