I was fighting with line noise when I posted my last bunch of stuff. Those glitches (like the Subject Lines) aren't all typos. :-/ This is all out-of order and date because it incorporates my post that didn't show up the day before yesterday. Angelos asks who "Glen" is. He was (is still? not sure) a listener in Kansas City who bought the 1st 4 from Happy. Since there were no lyric sheets, he'd call me up and we'd spend a lot of time talking about the lyrics, comparing notes. He was fascinated by the psychology of Happy's lyrics and had concerns about her mental health. I'd mentioned that once in a phone conversation with Happy and then forgot about it. I thought she'd forgotten about it too, so her bringing it up at the end of the interview was as much a suprise to me as I'm sure it was for Glen! Glen noticed immediately after getting the 1st4 that she was influenced by Bach, though he missed the W. Carlos connection. At the beginning of the interview, when Happy says that she was influenced by classical music and I pop in with "Bach?" it's directly as a result of Glen's inquiries. Speaking of the 1st4, Finnegan and Rodney, they should (hopefully) be released in May. We're all keeping our fingers crossed. Kevin said that people can pre-order them if they want, but it's not necessary. The advance money could come in handy, but they're not desperate or anything. There will be more than enough CDs, so no one should worry that they might sell out quickly. Finnegan, did you get the Ectophile FAQ I posted? I can send it to you if you came in after it appeared. I'm glad to see you here. I tried to pronounce the humongous word in your sig line but didn't make it. Where is that from? (And btw, you're not Finny the Nobody! You're now Finny the Ectophile! :-) Rodney, glad you liked Warpaint...I know what you mean about music that grows on you sometimes being the music that stays with you longest. Let us know what your friend thinks. Also speaking of the 1st4, Mark, they won't be selling the cassettes at the concert :-(. They will have information on flyers that will be given out. I wonder if 21st Century Sound will order a couple of sets if requested. Then they might hold them for you. Otherwise, just writing H&K in advance, saying you'd like to pick them up in Philly, might be the best way. Thanks for the tip aobut the Wilmington (but not really) record store. It's nice to know that the owner wants Happy to come, he must either like her, or Warpaints must be selling very well there. Harry, I loved your story and I'm glad you could recover the tape. How does it sound? If you need a re-dub, no problem. That reminds me, anyone else who got a problem copy of the HGP tapes, please let me know. One side of Jeff Burka's copy fell victim to the screwy side of my double cassette deck. If it sounds like it was recorded at a *much* lower level than the other sides it's my deck's fault. I think it sounds as if a blanket were thrown over the speakers. A big, heavy, wet Army blanket... ugh! Btw, since it's a topic up now (Doug's login) I should mention that I used no "Dubly" (stolen from Spinal Tap) on any of the sides on either project. If the hiss is too annoying, I can always re-dub. I tend to hate Dolby (not Tom! he's great!) because it sounds as if a blanket were thrown over the speakers :-) (a couple of light summer ones) Thanks Jeff Burka and Angelos for starting the B/R lyrics translations. More info about B/R. I talked to Happy for a couple of minutes today. She got the Ecto SiG and enjoyed it, but wanted to clear up some mistakes I'd made (see, I don't always have my information totally straight, but I try to mimimise that) and the first thing I got wrong was my saying that Happy only wrote one of the 5 B/R demos. I got that impression from Kevin. Our communication just was tangled, he misunderstood me and I misunder- stood him. Here's the real scoop: Kevin wrote the music and Happy wrote the lyrics and vocal melody for: "Love's Sabatoge" "Common Ground" Happy wrote the music and lyrics for "Point and Pull" "In Between the Lines" "Be Careful What You Say" Angelos, you need to change your attribution :-) Sorry for the confusion, I should have double-checked before I made the tape. Angelos, Kevin said that he also wanted "Poetic Justice" to be played. It might have been a combination of me going "boo hoo" when I was told that PJ wasn't on the original list and also Kevin's wanting the song in the set. Don't know, but it's there now! Kevin said that the first time they played the song in rehearsal, it sounded great. Everything was in the right place and they got into an immediate groove with the song. It just felt good from the very first time. Steve VanDevender, I got your tapes...and the Ecto SiG and HGP tapes are already in the mail back to you. Since heavy discussion is happening here and we do feel comfortable being honest, I hope people will speak up if they see any problems with Susanne being on Ecto. Not, of course, with any thoughts of keeping her off, but any concerns she can think about, write about and address once she gets on. I'm sure she'll have tons of questions for us all when she's hooked-up and feels comfortable enough with the system she's on to post. Are there any ideas floating around out there about how to get her on? Or has someone already contacted her? I'd like to kept updated on her progress. Thanks dnb for the Jersey listings. Hey Jeanne! Good to see you back, uh, well, sorry to see you back, uh well, good to see you back and hopefully you can get back out to California post haste. (You have a friend named D^2?) Meredith, did I tell you I loved your Ecto list? If not, I loved your Ecto list! Anyone who lists Off From Out first is ok by me....yeah! Everyone's mentioning Happy's voice and I agree whole-heartedly that it's a very interesting voice. Her style of talking is always like that, very assured and straight-forward. I'm glad she laughed a few times during the interview, because I love her laugh too. Before I first talked to her, I "pictured" her having a slightly high speaking voice. Her real voice was much better than I imagined. Kate talk for a moment... Martin, I didn't see an answer to your question, so here goes. In "Watching You Without Me" Kate does some really strange things with her voice near the end of the song. Not the choppy "help me baby help me, listen to me listen to me, talk to me" but after that, when the voice gets somewhat more melodical and sounds like backwards masking. (See, this is why I had hoped that someone else would jump in, I'm lousy at describing these sorts of things :-) ) That part was a contest in Kate's Fan Club newsletter and, if I remember right (?) no one got the correct answer. Does anyone remember the correct answer? I don't. In the song "Experiment IV" the "secret message" in hidden in the instrumental bit in the middle. No one has the slightest idea what she is saying. In the lip-sync Wogan show she performed EIV on, the camera showed Paddy on her computer screen mouthing the words at that point. Klaus, thanks for the Rainbirds concert review. Like Meredith, I envy you, it sounded like such fun! Angelos, thanks for the Wim Wender's review. We might go see the film this Friday, and Saturday is scheduled for _Wings of Desire_ and Sunday is scheduled for _7 & 28 Up_, in preparation for the opening of _35 Up_ here in a couple of weeks. We've been waiting *7* years for this documen- tary!! Has anyone else seen this series? Mike Peskura posted about the "Limited Edition" SiG arriving and I thought I'd mention (FYI kind-of-thing) that this tape is indeed a limited edition. I've decided that once the 1st4 come out on CD I'm going to re-record the entire thing. Except for "Friend You'll Be" there's no easy way to drop in songs without messing up what comes right before and after the song, so re-doing the whole thing is the only way. I'll definitely be using the song FYB, without any talking, and I'll probably do the other side too, and eliminate my talking about WtRCD being a "suprise" (mainly because it will probably be a bonus track on one of the CDs.) I might try to tighten up the interview bits and see if I can't eliminate some of my "uh uhs" and make it all a bit smoother. It should cut my "and" factor down 75% :-). (Anyone confused by that remark hasn't heard the Esig, because I say the word "and" about 2000 times. It's a bad habit I've never been able to break.) Doug, back before Ecto was an entity, I posted highlights of the interview in gaffa (it and the lyrics were what caused the brouhaha :-) so don't try transcribing anything until I can dig that up and see what all is there. I know some of it will have to be transcribed, but not everything. Ha, your quote from Happy was funny. I consider it a badge of honor to be called "strange" by Happy Rhodes! Mitch said he hoped that outtakes will be made available sometime and I assume he meant parts of the interview that didn't make the SiG. I included all the main goodies. Believe me, you're not missing out on anything interesting. I was not going to use the "make mega-bucks & do the Solid Gold thing," the "the response has been so overwhelming" and the talking about Kansas City bits, but I thought that those might be considered interesting by some and decided to go ahead and include them. Adding those bits was partly responsible for not having enough time for more Warpaint songs. Mitch, if you're talking about the History of Suspended in Happy bits, I've been thinking about that and here's what I came up with. Doug, listen up, because this concerns you. I received the tape from Kevin of the live songs sung on World Cafe. I will make another tape, using those songs and the WXPN interview. Using Kevin's tape will sound so much better because it was recorded from their master copy. I'll send that to Doug to use instead of his off-the-air copy. Since there will be an entire b-side of blank tape, I'll include my History thang. So, anyone who wants the World Cafe/WXPN interview and live songs can also get that if requested. I will try using a 90 and see how this works: I'll put the songs by themselves first, then the WC interview with the songs. The b-side will be the collage. I'll let everyone know when this is done and on the way to Doug. Ok, so who's going to make Vishal a compilation tape of The Monkees?? Jeff B, if you ever have the chance, do watch _Head_. It's silly and surreal and strange. Plus it has Jack Nicholson and Teri Garr in cameo appearances (Jack-o co-produced the film) and lots of other people I can't remember at the moment. And, yeah, I knew too that Mike Nesmith co-produced _Repo Man_. Great trivia question. More for Jeff...I have the 2 Silly Sisters albums and like them both. That style of music isn't something I could listen to a lot, but there are some great songs on both albums and it's great hearing those voices together. Vickie ps: This post was getting so long that I split it up. Pt. 2 should be finished tomorrow, filled with old and new stuff. ======================================================================== Date: 8-FEB-1992 00:31:55.09 From: MTARR@eagle.wesleyan.edu Subject: Heidi Berry, Global Warming, etc... Hi! Okay Doug, so chunks of ice falling from the sky are called Global Warming. Thanks for clearing that up. :> Re Heidi Berry: she's a 4AD artist with a typically 4AD voice, and her album entitled "Love" was deemed boring by a bunch of people of our mutual acquaintance- as for me, I file her under the Cowboy Junkies- nice, but a whole album and you're snoozing with the best of them. She makes a showing on the latest This Mortal Coil output, as well. If you're into Female Vocalists, definitely check her out. "Die Gedanken sind gebraten." Mitch, that's beautiful. I'm going to use it someday- but don't worry, I'll be sure to footnote. ;) Ecto flags. Can't we just toss a beach ball back in forth in front of the stage, and really piss Happy off? Speaking of whom, I was mentioning to a friend last night that I had to remember to call the QEII in Albany and ask if the Happy show will be 21+ or not. If it is, I'm screwed- but it was suggested that maybe I could try to get Happy to somehow get me in- like I could join her tech crew for a night or something. To which my friend replied, "Would that make you a Happy Roadie?" When I recovered my senses enough to utter an intelligible sound, I answered, I have no idea. :) You will all I'm sure be pleased as Ecto-punch to know that my trials and tribulations of computer hardware are now permanently (knock knock knock) behind me, and I have a working CPU in my possession for the first time in too long. I can therefore log on from the comfort of my room, and while the fuzzy-blue of the Science Center screens is missing, I can easily listen to Happy while doing the ecto thang. The archives (anonymous ftp) are at hardees.rutgers.edu in pub/hr/ecto You all walked in on the middle of a topic you haven't the faintest idea about. I made a tape for Ectophiles called the "Ecto SiG" (meaning Ecto Suspended in Gaffa, aka Suspended in Ecto...Suspended in Gaffa is the name of my radio show...stolen from Kate, of course :-) ) This tape has some songs from Happy's 1st 4 albums, plus bits from an interview I did with her, plus rare songs not available anywhere else. Also, you'll hear references to the HGP (which stand for Happy Gift Project) which is a tape consisting of songs that Ectophiles liked and wanted Happy to hear. Those who participated sent me a tape with their song pick, and some sent messages too. I compiled the songs together onto 2 tapes and sent them to Happy as a Winter Gift. Everyone who sent tapes got back exactly what Happy got. This is available to anyone, even if they aren't a participant. We'll be doing it again for Happy's birthday coming up this summer. You'll hear lots more about that in the next few months. Any questions, just ask! > Vickie, the tapes are just wonderful. > *Everyone*, thankyou for the HGP. Nope, wasn't even going to try! I think I mangled a few names, hopefully none too awfully bad. Cathy, thanks for telling me how to pronounce your last name. I should have asked you before I taped the show. > angelos, how do you pronounce your name? Everyone i know says it differently!? I like the Greek soft "g" instead of the Americanized hard "g" so I decided to say it in the way it sounds more comfortable to me. I hope the last name came out. Angelos, how'd I do? I just regret that I didn't think to say his real, full name, Agathagelos (correct spelling?) because that sounds *really* neat! Btw, thanks Jessica and Chip for the nice recipies for fuzzy blue drinks. After drinking Chip's I'd definitely feel fuzzy blue.....ak! At least, I'd have a hell of a fuzzy blue hangover the next morning! Stephen Thomas, your tapes arrived today...it's about time. I don't know why your tapes get picked on (your HGP tapes *still* have not shown up) but the second batch is finally here. Claudia and Cathy, *thanks* so much for the cabbage/underwear ideas! They had me rolling on the floor. When I spoke to Happy I passed along the two stories and she started laughing too. Hey, maybe they'll work for her. Depending on what mood I'm in, I use similar techniques while on the air. When I was live, I'd pick out a listener (in my head only, I wouldn't say anything on the air about them) and do the whole show for them. It was much easier, and much more informal when I could "speak" to just one person. Now that I'm on tape, it's very different. Now I just assume that *nobody's* listening and that I'm speaking in dead air. Of course I know that some people are listening, but tape is so formal I can't seem to get into that informal groove anymore. Speaking to "nobody" is about the same as speaking to an audience of cabbages I suppose. I feel more anonymous. Happy's a bit (um, make that lots) freaked that so many Ectophiles will be in Albany. I think she wishes that Kevin hadn't told me about that show. She really doesn't understand why anyone would want to go see it. I explained the reasoning from a fan's point of view. a) it's the *first* Warpaint gig b) if it's possible to go, why not? c) it's something for the fan/Ecto archives (i.e. years from now, "Were you at the Albany (Philly) show?" "Yip" "Wow" :-) ) d) What else is there to do on a Wednesday night? (Besides listen to my show if you're in Chicago...) e) We have to do *something* to celebrate Alan Sodoma's birthday! Why not go to a concert? And as long as you're playing... f) R-h-o-d-e-s, H-a-p-p-y. Why? Because we loooooove youuuuu!!! :-) (only former Mousketeers will get that one) I tried to reassure her that, hey lady, no one actually expects the show to be, like, any *good* or anything. Sheesh! I mean, this ain't the Tour of Life, don't be such a worrywart......:-) (maybe she bought it, I don't know...) Re: Wendy Wall Cathy, there's actually a very marginal WW/Happy connection, in that H&K tried to get Happy signed to SBK Records when WP was released. The people at SBK liked WP very much, but passed on it because they were gearing up to heavily promote the upcoming Wendy Wall album. As was the case with other places, they probably figured they had their solo female artist and didn't need another one. Hmmm. Well, as far as I know, the album they were gearing up for hasn't been released and I don't know what's going on with it. I like Wendy Wall a lot. I too have the first album and the interview that Kiri mentioned, though mine is much longer (it came on a cassette, with WW interview on one side and a Will & the Bushman interview on the other.) I've never seen a Wendy Wall video. Short personal aside: One of Wendy's songs has been an unofficial theme song for SiG since I first heard it. Here it is: A Woman's Voice Wendy Wall Can you hear it can you feel it in the air It's like fingers running through your hair Coming through the trees and running through the earth If you're still you'll hear Sweet like you've never known Strong as the roots of home Oh how the roots have grown It's time you're hearing a woman's voice Hear a woman's voice like puzzle piece to man's And her hand like puzzle piece in hand It's a quiet night just listen and you'll hear We're a world in fear Time is a beating drum Peace like a setting sun Fear is a loaded gun It's time you're hearing a womans' voice Still this world of sound Just for one minute stop and take a look around I think you need us now Can you hear it can you feel it in the air It just may be answer to a prayer Are you running here and looking everywhere For what was always there No you are not alone Sweet the sound of your own Oh let it call you home It's time you're hearing a womans' voice And the music and melody is wonderful too. I don't like every single song on the album, but most of them. Even when I don't particularly care for a song, her lyrics are always interesting. It's not earth- shakingly original, but very very nice and I would definitely say to anyone who hasn't heard Wendy to try her out. Highly recommended. My other favorites on this album are "Postcard to the Stars" ("we have sent you greeting cards, our rocket ships are question marks/they thunder and they whistle through the air/like a child in the dark forever whispering 'is anybody there?'/we have color tv's and there's music and there's dancing but I think we wear a lonely face/the human race") and "Sweet Imagination" ("there goes my sweet imagination/there it goes and it goes wild/there goes my sweet imagination/i grow and it stays a child") I also really like "Wandering the Streets of Modern America" ("there it was near nightfall I asked a passerby for the time/and she said 'late twentieth century'/...cars were whizzing past me with booming jungle beat radios/and headlights cut the dusk like switchblades") and "Missles & Guns" ("a history book is a story of guns, years of blowing souls to kingdom come") Most of the rest of the songs are pretty good too. Kiri, the CD I have has all the lyrics in it, if you'd like me to send the rest of them for "Real Life" let me know. The album is self-titled (Wendy Wall) and is SBK CDP-92807. If anyone hears anything abut her new one, speak up. Gray, I just love your sig line. Please tell the story of where it came from. I've heard it, but I think others would enjoy it too. This still isn't all finished, but I have to go to bed.....blah! I'm reading everything and I want to respond to everything but I get so far behind. I enjoy *all* the posts, and if I don't respond to some- thing right away (or at all) it's not personal, believe me. I sometimes think of things *weeks* later that I forgot to respond to, then i think it's too late to say anything. Anyway, I do enjoy all the messages from everyone and it's great to log on and see what's going on. Add on: We went to see _Until the End of the World_ last night and it is fantastic! Now I'll go back and find the review that Angelos posted and re-read it with better understanding. I also don't understand why the film is getting such mixed bad reviews. It's flawed in places, but I had a great time and highly recommend it. I took a recording Walkman with me and recorded the Peter Gabriel song, since it isn't on the soundtrack. I haven't listened back to it, but it probably sounds awful and tinny. Still, the song is excellent and I *do* hope it comes out in some form or another soon. Tonight....Wings of Desire!! Hello again to Beth! Glad you're glad to be an Ectophile and glad to have you as an Ectophile! (Did you get my e-mail?) Btw, is your last name Perry? From your e-dress, I assumed eperry stands for Elizabeth Perry and that's what I put on the Birthday List. Correct me if I'm wrong. (Oh, I put Beth Perry, not Elizabeth) Doug, global warming is at work here in Chicago. We're having the mildest winter in history, I believe! More later....(yeah, yeah, promises, promises...:-) Vickie ps: Ken, Keith and Karl, I don't always yak this much, I'm just way behind and trying to catch up (yeah, yeah...excuses, excuses....:-) Bye from Motormouth Ecto-Mom! ======================================================================== Subject: Warpaint review in Dirty Linen Date: Sat, 08 Feb 92 12:25:03 -0500 From: "Tom Keays" This is my first posting. I'm sort of new to Happy; I heard about her awhile ago via Love-Hounds (Thanks Vickie) but never sent away for any recordings. I recently heard a couple of cuts from Warpaint and liked it. Then I saw a short review of Warpaint that appeared in the Dec./Jan. 1991-92 issue of Dirty Linen magazine. (Dirty Linen was formerly a fanzine of Fairport Convention but now covers a wide variety of Folk, Electric Folk, Traditional and World Music.) I decided to send away for the CD and join ecto. You people sure are enthusiastic! Well, anyway, here is the review. Happy Rhodes Warpaint [Aural Gratification AGCD0017]. This record is kind of like Laurie Anderson wrote the Iyrics for Kate Bush, Annie Lennox, and Joni Mitchell to sing with Phil Glass and Eno arranging and producing. This is not a fair comparison, because Happy along with her co-producer Kevin Barlett, have created a sound that is uniquely their own. Happy's arrangements are fresh and have a strong folk sensibility, but are presented in a kind of minimalist context. The 12 songs on the album were written and arranged by Happy. Songs like "Waking Up", "Feed the Fire" and "Murder" are sonically interesting and lyrically unique, but I like the songs of alienation the best. The juxapostion of Happy's calming voice, The production values of the tunes, and their vocal content are appealing. Songs like "All Things" and "Wrong Century" sound perfect while struck in afternoon traffic or after hassling with the local various bureaucracy. Tom ======================================================================== From: golden@eniac.seas.upenn.edu (Stephen "Jokey" Golden) Subject: Dance Ensemble from Senegal Date: Sat, 8 Feb 92 12:28:02 EST Last night I went to see a dance ensemble from Senegal, Africa. They were mostly dancers and drummers, but there was a lot of singing, fire-eating, stilt walking, Kora playing (the Kora is like a sixteen string guitar), and a little bit of dialogue. Why am I sharing this with you??? Well, it was the Harrisson Auditorium in the University Museum in Philly. Yup, that's Happy's venue! It's been about two years since I was there, and, I will happily say, that for this group, the acoustics were great. Now, I'm no acoustics expert, but this sounded good to me! I don't know if they took a long time to setup, but they had three microphones on the stage, and one wireless microphone for one of the singers. And, even though they moved the mics around a lot, it still sounded very good. And I started thinking, is there a reason we assumed the accoustics would be bad there, or were we just afraid that might be the case. Anyway, just a brief description of the place, it's all made of brick, and is a mini-dome. It's beautifully decorated, and I think y'all will like it. -- -- Stephen Golden Through the darkness of futures past, golden@eniac.seas.upenn.edu the magician longs to see, --------------------------- one chance out between two worlds... Here's where I became seriously disenchanted with the group. IMHO from here on in: Macalla still retained the qualties which made the group enjoyable for me. past that I felt like they traded in their talent for synths. I found almost all of Sirius to be very mediocre pop music. I saw them in concert right around this period and was very disappointed to find the Celtic group I liked had turned into very vapid and truly mediocre band. They performed a song from the album "Clannad in Concert" (a fine album from stage 1) which had some wonderful acoustic solo work. I would have been ecstatic to hear it except they performed a terrible electric version. Sigh. Yeah, I agree with this. My own musical tastes were formed around British rock (Jethro Tull, Yes, ... much later Kate Bush, XTC, ...) and, through the British folk-rock bands such as Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span, to Irish traditional dance music (I play it). I really enjoyed early Clannad but their recent stuff is boring. However, for a band in a similar Celtic/Rock vein, I WOULD recommend Moving Hearts; especially their live album, The Storm. Great stuff. tom ======================================================================== Date: Sat, 8 Feb 92 18:09:26 EST From: David N. Moving Hearts was pretty much a Celtic superstar band of a few years past (with people like Christy Moore in it). They're a bit harder to find in the US though. I hadn't heard about that album, the live album I have is called 'Live Hearts'.
