Relph" Subject: Re: My Bloody Valentine Angelos writes: > My Bloody Valentine has >its moments but some songs are just noise (IMHO). Brian Eno might have said >that they are the future of pop, but 'My ears have parasites'...:-) The new album is pretty much astounding from start to finish. Even the songs that ARE just noise are compelling, if not actually beautiful. Songs such as "Touched" may not be "songs", which is to say that it doesn't have lyrics or a traditional pop structure, but I find it compelling, and strangely beautiful. Each song on the album has its own sound, an imagined soundstage realised in the studio. Headphones show this off best. This is not an album that tries to represent a band's live sound (augmented by massive overdubs and multiple takes). This is an album more like Eno's ambient recordings that creates a sound that could not happen in real life, that can happen only through the art of the studio. Also, I happen to like powerful, repetetetive, perhaps even hypnotic musick. Songs like "When You Sleep" and "I Only Said" are just that. And the louder you play this album, the better it gets. That said, it's also wonderful and soothing at low volume. And live, they do create quite a wall of noise. Hypnotic. Much more than one would expect from just four musicians. (No flute player when I saw them.) I felt that I might have experienced the same feelings if I had seen early Pink Floyd performances with Syd Barrett in the late Sixties. -- John ======================================================================== Subject: stuffs Date: Thu, 06 Feb 92 18:48:50 EST From: jeffy@lewhoosh.umd.edu Woj 'n Jessica, thanks for your NYC suggestions. I hope my wallet can afford for them to come in handy...;-) Justin--what were you planning on arguing with me wrt to "No Testament"? The fact that I wasn't crazy about track 3, "Stretti"? I want a bluelooking yellowtasting drink. Sounds wonderful. Are we going to get the recipe? Cathy--go buy lots 'n lots of Clannad. I regret that I only own 3 of their albums (though, of course, I also have all 3 of Enya's). What have you heard that you've liked? They seem to have 3 phases, from what I know and have heard. The first was Irish-folk-traditional/jazz fusion. This shows up in things like the great sax solos on the album _Fuaim_ (the only "early" album I own). This was the only Clannad album upon which Enya appears, and to be honest, it's hard to pick out her voice from her sister's. They then moved to an Enya-esque sort of sound; very lush and almost new-agey, with heavy wall-of-sound production. This appears on albums like _Magical Ring_, _Legend_, and a lot of the tracks on _Macalla_. Unlike Enya, though, there isn't the sense of vocal over-dubs taken to an extreme (Enya goes far past the extreme and pulls it off; Clannad stops well short of the extreme, and also pulls it off). One of the distinguishing features of Clannad that makes this period so wonderful is that in addition to Maire's wonderful Enya-esque vocals, you also have the 4 male members of the band harmonizing in a way that Enya just can't do (...though Happy can! ;-). From here, the band started moving in a more rock direction, staring with some of the tracks on _Macalla_ ('85) and then much more of a pop-rock sound on '87's _Sirius_. _Macalla_, for instance, has Maire singing a duet with Bono (it's incredible!), and _Sirius_ has Bruce Hornsby playing/singing on a number of tracks. It's weird--he has a very distinctive voice and piano style, yet I can barely hear him on _Sirius_. Clannad also put out an album a year or two ago, but I haven't heard it yet; I don't know if they continued on in their pop trend or started returning to more traditional songs. If you don't own any Clannad yet, you might want to check out _PastPresent_, a best-of album containing songs from _Magical Ring_, _Legend_, _Macalla_ and _Sirius_. The songs are well chosen, and the CD weighs in a wonderful 70+ minutes in 16 tracks. _PastPresent_ does *not* contain any of the earlier folky-stuff, but if that's where your interest lies, you might want to collect the early albums anyway, and perhaps get _PastPresent_ to find out what the later material sounded like. Hmmm. I keep thinking there were a few other things I wanted to respond to, but I'll worry about them later... Jeff |Jeffrey C. Anyway - Vickie, please tell Happy _not_ to come down to Wilmington. The owner of Rolling Thunder said he's trying to get her down for a signing - but RTR is _not_ really in Wilmington - it's in a horrid little shopping center out in the outskirts. It's a _tiny_ store, it's hard to find, it's hard to park... If she ends up there, she'll probably end up with her nightmare coming true. (Of course, I'll do my best to drag people up if she does, but I don't think I can find too many people...) (By the way, I don't really mean to put down the store - it's the first record store that I've seen in Delaware that I actually liked. Nice selection, nice independent atmosphere, good prices, etc. But I don't think many people will come out to see Happy, and I don't want her to have to go through that!) -Mark (Looking forward to the concert, and to get Happy to sign my disk in Philly the day before. Blank-Edelman Subject: Clannad (was:stuffs) > They seem to have 3 phases, from what I know and have heard. The first > was Irish-folk-traditional/jazz fusion. An apt description. The very first albums (like Clannad 2) are closer to traditional Celtic music. > From here, the band started moving in a more rock direction, staring > with some of the tracks on _Macalla_ ('85) and then much more of a > pop-rock sound on '87's _Sirius_. Sigh. Here's where I became seriously disenchanted with the group. IMHO from here on in: Macalla still retained the qualties which made the group enjoyable for me. past that I felt like they traded in their talent for synths. I found almost all of Sirius to be very mediocre pop music. I saw them in concert right around this period and was very disappointed to find the Celtic group I liked had turned into very vapid and truly mediocre band. They performed a song from the album "Clannad in Concert" (a fine album from stage 1) which had some wonderful acoustic solo work. I would have been ecstatic to hear it except they performed a terrible electric version. Sigh. These may be the ramblings of a purist, but I don't think I'm unjustified in saying that their talent can be found better displayed on the earlier albums. Macalla is sort of the border for me (and it is a nice album). I haven't heard their latest album, so I can't comment. As far as the recommendation of PastPresent, it seemed more skewed towards Macalla and beyond when I glanced at it. If that is the case, you can guess my feelings on it. There is a fine (but alas an import) collection on K-Tel (I heard those snickers!) of their stuff that I can recommend.
