If all posts are reviews, then we have ecto.reviews, you get my point? Ecto is wonderful because it is varied and it allows for a different style of conversation. We have talked about irrelevant things ranging from snow (the poll results will be out soon) to sci-fi to birthdays. She is the perfect democratic moderator. I unsubscribed from the Prince mailing list when I saw that the moderator kicked out someone who thought Prince was no Mozart. Discussion and opposing thoughts are tools to see all aspects of an artistic creation. A river of praising monologues only obstructs the view. In order to fully appreciate the whole picture you sometimes have to see and criticise the imperfections. 'Every rose has its thorns' (:-)). If you don't let anyone see them you might get hurt. Have I made my point, or do I have to go on using silly metaphors? :-) Seriously, I think that the creation of warmroom will only weaken both ecto and .gaffa. I refuse to subscribe to it, even if people I REALLY LIKE are going to be there, and I feel sorry that I will miss their posts and their discussions. And it's not only because of my principles. I have less than no interest in subscribing to warmroom; in fact, the mere thought of it almost but not quite disgusts me. _Please_ do not post warmroom material to ecto. If I want KaTe info, I'll go to r.m.g. It's more fun that way. Jorn (who's gone so far overboard that suddenly "Full fathoms five" seems t apply) is trying to forcibly create a friendly space. I think that's a crock. (and golly, I hope you can excuse my foul language) Ecto is a wonderful place; I love the mailing list, I love the people who populate it, I love Happy. I don't think it's an accident that Ecto turned out the way it did. I will point out, however, that it was not created as a warm, fuzzy blue love-in. It didn't have that nature as one of its prime goals. It did have the discussion and promotion of Happy Rhodes as an artist at its heart, and I think we've succeeded admirably at that. I don't know of any other mailing lists with the sense of camaraderie here, nor do I know of any that's done such great things for the readers, such as EctoSiG or such great things for the artist under discussion (HGP). But we *became* friendly, we learned to trust each other and Ecto _became_ warm and fuzzy blue. I don't think it could have been described that way in the first week of operation. The group wasn't created with this in mind; it evolved that way. And I don't know if this would have, _could have_ happened if we'd tried to force it. There would have been a sort of dishonesty about it, like a genuine faux diamond; it may glitter, but you can crush it under your heel. Angelos already pointed out that we _have_ Ecto already; why do you folks feel like you need _another_ cozy little mailing list? What are you so afraid of in Gaffa? Are you really unable to ignore the ignoble rantings of Cynthia or Stev0 or Druk (whose posting about warmroom a day or so ago really summed up my own feelings)? Do you have put so little stock in your own opinions that you feel nobody could possibly find them interesting unless they're people dedicated to making you feel warm and cozy? I've refrained from commenting on this whole issue as it's blown up in gaffa, but when Jorn decided to share his little "golden" image with us, I couldn't handle it anymore. This posting is not nearly as vicious as it could have or might have been, and that's largely because I'm sure a lot of people I consider friends are warmroom subscribers. It is, however, refreshing to know that even if a bunch of you are put out by my feelings on this, I have no fear of repercussions even should you approach Jessica with your complaints. They might be considered spoilers (or unbearable teasers! ;-) for people who haven't heard the EctoSiG yet, so I'm giving you a chance to bail out now. It's depressing to hear incredible music by a duo as powerful as Bartlett/Rhodes, and at the same time that you hear this music for the first time, know that the duo is defunct and never even released an entire album. I particularly loved the fifth demo, the name of which I can't recall. I was surprised to hear that Kevin had written 4 of the 5. Did he also write the lyrics, or did Happy help out on those? "When the Rain Came" is also pretty durned incredible, but in some ways it made me feel disappointed about _Warpaint_. It seemed like WtRC had a heavy Kevin influence, without the Kevin. I got the impression that the songs on _Warpaint_ might have sounded a lot more like WtRC if Kevin hadn't been playing instruments and co-producing. One of the touches I like (and many of us have commented about missing on _Warpaint_) is the use of acousting guitar in the mix. It's not's particularly loud, but it's still insistently there...and wonderful. Many, many thanks to Vickie for including this rare material, and the same to Happy for being such a wondeful patron as to provide a cut for her fans...I wonder what would happen if we all started chanting "Rains! Rains! Rains!" at the concert--would she try to play it? ;-) Of course, the obvious question that pops into my mind after hearing this 6 songs is: are the lyrics on record anywhere or is it time for me to pull out my headphones and fire up the text editor? I also believe some welcomes are due to newcomers. However, I red-facedly don't know who I haven't welcomed, but a sincere, if anonymous, welcome, anyway! I checked with my schedule, my finances (Thank you IRS! :) ), and my boss, and the way is clear! I am going to Albany and Philadelphia for some strange reason this March!! I am looking forward to meeting the lot of you, as well as both concerts. However, I need a wee bit of help. * I've exhausted my resources here, and still don't have a ticket for the Philadelphia concert. I even called the Philadelphia TicketMaster, but the man denied all knowledge of a Happy Rhodes concert in Philadelphia on March 21st. (I got it right, didn't I?) So could some very kind soul buy me the treasured ducat? I'll pay either before or after, whichever my kind benefactor prefers. * I second Meredith's confusion. What are the details of the Albany concert? I need to know a definite date (17th or 18th) soon so that I can to buy my airline ticket. What's the story about the concert tickets? * Have any Ectophile events been planned for either concert? In between? In any case, keep me up to date on the goings on! My plans are flexible. Between the concerts and any other stuff, I hope to visit as many of my eight old homesteads as possible as I can (or can find. I haven't been back in 21 years!) in New Jersey and upstate New York. My brother may also still be in Pennsylvania. Things can be easily fitted around anyone's plans. Sigh! I am already having trouble explaining to people who have only the faintest idea about computer networks and the faintest interest in music why I am flying over two thousand miles to see two concerts by an artist no one has ever heard of and meet friends I've never even seen. And I am not even mentioning warm blue fuzziness! I don't care!! I'm going!!! Watch out East Coast! Warning: Ecto SiG spoilers ahead: Vickie, I *loved* the Suspended in Ecto tape with its myriad little surprises. I have to listen to those new songs again. (I was more than a little out of it last evening). Have you transcribed the interview? It has lots of tasty little bits for Ectophiles. When I picked up the package, it rattled more than I expected a mere cassette to. Unfortunately, it also rattled more than a key ring and cassette should. After opening it, small pieces of plastic also poured out of the bag. Some blunt pointed object made a mess of Vickie's careful wrapping, nearly shattered the cassette cover, and broke the key chain at the hole in the plastic. Fortunately, the key items remained intact, the tape and the picture. (Finally, a Happy smile!) Now I can finally read the story of its making and my tiny cameo appearance (Actually, Vickie, your message is still on my answering machine. (I wish I had a way to save it. :) )).
