Ecto-SiG!! Necrology Redux ======================================================================== From: kyrlidis@athena.mit.edu Subject: Wenders is a genius Date: Sun, 02 Feb 92 23:55:34 EST Hi, Before I forget, Thanks Klaus for the Rainbirds report! And now to the point. There has been a lot of talk about the soundtrack of this movie, but unfortunately not enough talk about the movie itself. I am talking about 'Until the end of the world', the new Wenders movie that I just saw and loved so much I had to write about it right away before tha magic of it wears out. I was surprised by the bad reviews this movie got from all over. Critics called it long, boring and unimaginitive. The movie is brilliant. It takes place in 1999 while an indian nuclear sattelite has gone awry and is about to crash somewhere on earth. The world is in a frenzy. Claire the heroine is riding to Paris in her computerized car escaping from one of her escapades and gets stuck in a traffic jam. She gets out of the main roads and her adventurses begin. She crashes into an odd pair of bankrobbers and agrees to carry their loot to Paris. When she eventually gets there she bumps into William Hurt and immediately gets hooked. She embarks on a worldwide chase following him, finding him and losing him. He is wanted by the CIA the FBI and people are after him to get the reward. Why? Because he is carrying a machine that has incredible potential. A machine designed by his father to capture images so that his blind mother can see the world. A machine that in a world where technology has gone awry, can be used to spy into people's dreams...I won't spoil the movie for you so I'll stop here. GO SEE IT! The music is so well crafted and fits so well into the movie that even if you don't get into the spirit of the movie you'll enjoy the songs and the accompanying visuals. Peter Gabriel's 'The blood of Eden' is worth the admission price by itself. If this is an indication of what his new album will be like, then the wait was worth it! I will definitely see the movie again and again and again. Good night ecto... Angelos 'Are you carrying a dagger or a cross?' (?) - Peter Gabriel ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 3 Feb 92 02:22:16 EST From: woj@remus.rutgers.edu Subject: ectoyardee was down in philly this evening attending the show that robyn hitchcock performed (anybody who likes solid guitar pop should *not* miss this show as i think this is some of his best live work to date with the egyptians). anyways, after the show, i was talking with two friends whom i had gone with and was invited to a party on the 21st. i replied that i was already going to be in town that day. they asked why and i said that i was going to be there for the happy show. one said that she was planning on going and the other (mine olde college roommate) asked what happy sounded like. had a copy of warpaint in the car, which i proceeded to get and put in the tape deck. i'm not sure exactly why he asked, but he wanted to borrow it (he's not normally a female vocalist fan-type-person). i ended up jut giving it to him - by spreading the faith that way, i also get to digitize my copy of the album. :) looks like another cd order is on its way to albany.... other stuff.... spix%sparc6a@harvard.harvard.edu (Claudia Spix) sez: >I went to Washington for a few days last week and it took me til now >to catch up on the digests. You people sure do a lot of writing!;-) heh...i was in washington and philly this past weekend and half expected to come back to a million bytes of digests to read through - but there were only the two that i had read saturday morning before leaving. lucky me - guess i get to sleep tonight after replying to this stuff... :) >Meredith, great you wrote the name of the 2. Rainbirds Album. yow - that is waht i'm listening to right now. have to agree with meredith and her friend on this one: what was that middle part? the rest of it is rather nice though. think i'll put _two faces_ on next... MTARR@eagle.wesleyan.edu sez: >Anyway, a few minutes later he >came on and said something about getting a lot of requests, and "someone >called and asked for... The Happy Noses or something like that, well, sorry, >I couldn't find it." hah! did i ever tell you all the story about my quest for cocteau twins' _heaven or las vegas_? pretty amusing tale as well. i knew that it was to be released on the 17th of august in 1990, so i wandered down to the local sam goody, thinking that since the twins were being released in america on cap- itol records, they'd probably have it on the release date. no such luck. neither the cd or the single were there. wondering it it was worth the effort, i walked over the counter and asked a likely looking counter person if the album was in. he looked at me and said, "the cocktail twins?" begining to realize that this was futile, but that there was much amusement potential, i replied, "no, cocteau twins". he started to walk to the cd racks and i stopped him saying that i already checked there and that i was wondering if it was still in the back on not on the shelves yet. he said he'd look and again repeated, "the cocktail twins?". i shook my head, pointed to my groin, "cock", pointed to my feet, "toe" and looked back at him, "twins". he got the message and meandered off to check. came back in a minute or three and said, "no". by this time, i was just barely keeping myself from bursting in to laughter, so i quickly thanked him for his trouble and left. and laughed soon as i was out of the store... >Woj mentioned the new Outback album. I found it in the station the other >day, and played the first track, "Cuban something-or-other", which appeared >to be the only track under 6 or 7 minutes on the whole thing. Sounded pretty >neato, as I'm sure you've figured out by now, woj, if you've listened to >it. actually, i still haven't, but i did hear taht track on the radio a few days ago. >For the rest of you, if you like that sort of thing, I recommend it. Perfect >background noise for life. :) nah! don't believe her - it's intricate and compelling. sure, it can be used as "backdrop music", but it deserves more than a few serious listens. beautiful melodies and rhythms abound. dig it. Nimue - Gwragedd Annwn sez: >I've been >thinking that it would be great if Gaffans and Ectoians got together >and bought their own radio station... mmmmmmhhhhh...one of my long range goals is to someday start a radio station up in some place that desperately needs one - like upstate new york for in- stance (or perhaps maine). anyways, i'd gladly deejay the graveyard shift! >Devonsquare "Bye Bye Route 66" >Yes, Bye Bye. Blah Blah Blah countryish Blah. Typical southern alt. >Alana MacDonalds vocals are nice, but there is nothing special here, and >certainly nothing worth mentioning. i remember their first release. it's pretty, but also pretty boring. now, *this* is something to put in the background while doing something else. it is so easily ignorable that you won't even realize that it is there (i do admit to playing "thin ice" from the first album a few times on the radio though when i had nothing better in reach). >The Golden Palominos "Drunk with Passion" on Charisma >Michael Stipe sings on track one, which is a decent song 'Alive and >living now.' I wouldnt be surprised if this gets radio play. it would have except for a pisspoor promotion. this is a nice album (tho' not nearly as brilliant as the first golden palominos album, self-titled featuring people like john zorn and others, or _visions of excess_, which also featured michael stipe and syd straw (who stole the show with her voice). this is sorta a "super-group" made up of a core of anton fier on drums and bill laswell on bass. basically a new york city thing. >Amanda Kramer leads up on most of the album. she used to be in the information society and i always thought her talent was wasted there (sure, tis is great dance fluff, but it was just too for- getable and faddy). >Bongwater "The Big Sell-Out!" >Kramer adds his presence, but Ann should bag him and do her own thing. no! kramer is genius! ann is a great singer, but without kramer it just would not be bongwater. they need each other. >The album cover is tooting the sex sells image as Ann's cleavage >covers the whole thing - know you guys will eat that up.... heh - but what about _the power of pussy_? >Hinterland "Dark Hill" (single) "Kissing The Roof of Heaven"(album) >The best thing I've found yet! ditto. one of my faves of (um) 1990 (i think). sublime and achingly beau- tiful. *highly* recommended if you like deacon blue or the blue nile. _two faces is almost done. think i'll listen to this next. or was i going to go to bed? woj ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 3 Feb 1992 20:53:55 +0800 (SST) From: N_HAYS@fennel.cc.uwa.oz.au Subject: Obscured KaTe lyrics... I haven't checked rec.music.misc lately, but I would surmise it will soon be replete--as it is from time to time --with exegeses of the lyrics to "American Pie." 2) The teaser on the front page of _USA Today_ the other day said, "Willie Dixon Was The Blues."
