Let's get this thing together and get us all into WXPN either on that Friday or Saturday with Happy by our side and show 'em how much they need Vickie on their station. Maybe they'll give Vickie a permanent position and she'll have to move to Philly :-) Well gang, I attended the special party that was thrown by WXPN this past Wednesday evening at the Dock Street Pub in Phila. Great beer..they have their own brewery on premisis and every evening they have a different variety to choose from on tap. I particularly like the dark stout they brew. They had a live band called The Low Road who was really good. Upright bass, acoustic guitar, violin, harmonica, and drummer. All original stuff...kinda reminded me of Pentangle...maybe... Had a good time chatting with David Dye (who does the World Cafe), Mike Morrison (program director), and various other WXPN DJ's. When we walked in they gave us the new edition of the WXPN member newsletter and guess who is the cover, lead story? Yes that's right - Happy! It's a real nice/long article and I'll try to make some time this weekend and key it in so you can all read it. Besides the text they had the picture of Happy from the Warpaint cover. The article mentioned us here on Ecto! If I recall correctly they referred to us as a "computer network fan club" or something like that. They asked Happy why she thinks she's been received so well in Philly and she said "because Philly's a cool place" David Dye told me that he's amazed at the response to Happy by WXPN listeners. He told me a story of a new small CD shop in Jersey that got 100 copies of Warpaint and sold 'em in no time. I asked him his opinion as to why some major label hasn't picked up Happy and he claimed he didn't have an explaination for it. We talked about the upcoming concert in Phila and he said that the hall should be ok, but that the acoustics might leave a little to be desired...he said something like it was "hollow" sounding. We both agreed that the Keswick Theater or the Theater Of Living Arts would have been a better choice for acoustics but that there was other things to consider such as price, # of seats that would have to be sold etc. He said that he thought that the Auditorium seated about 400 or so...the promoter had told me 800...so I'm not sure what it is...perhaps Steven Golden knows? He was excited to hear that the first 4 tapes were going to CD...he hadn't heard that. Vickie, I spoke with Mike Morrison about that 1 hour slot and it looks like their morning DJ, Makela Majuene (sp?), is going to do it. Oh well...we tried. Other interesting notes... The marketing director says that they estimate that only 10% of the regular listeners contribute $$ to the station. They have about 10,000 members. Obviously, they want all of us that *do* contribute to try to get our friends to, especially if they are regular listeners. Had a great time, y'all woulda like it. Looks like I'm going to be a guest on Kids Corner to talk about Shortwave Listening at some point in the future. That'll be fun. Klaus "cosmic vagabond" Kluge - Thanks very much for the info from the NIXPUB listing. I'm going to give it a try...I definetly need to get into the network by a means other than Compuserve. I figure, I have to say something from time to time or you'll all think I got lost. But be assured, I keep lurking! I went to Washington for a few days last week and it took me til now to catch up on the digests. You people sure do a lot of writing!;-) Vickie, I enjoyed this report-from-the-workbench a lot, I'd never have imagined putting together a cassette could cost so much time and nerves. Actually I had never quite known what the Ecto-SiG project was, Klaus explained to me once, I forgot, and then I kept wanting to ask him but I forgot this too. Our daily e-mails to each other are pretty long anyway. Now all I have to do is go back home and listen to it! I'm not sure but this could be the last time I write from Boston (depends on how busy the next weeks get) so please note: - my snail mail address in Boston expires Feb 15th I'll be back in Wuppertal then. Most things, and this goes for E-mail too, need only be sent once to us anyway, except for T-shirts perhaps! - my e-mail address here will not expire, but it is uncertain when and how and if I can get access to my stuff here. So: - Jessica, please stop sending any digests here from Feb 13th. BUT I'll stay on ecto! I'll go back to reading over Klaus shoulder, he'll let you know about technical details if anything changes - mail that doesn't go to Klaus anyway please to claudia@inphobos.w.open.de although this account may not yet be working. But soon. Meredith, great you wrote the name of the 2. Rainbirds Album. I keep forgetting it, on my cassette I just typed Rainbirds II, because otherwise I would have run out of room for the titles! I promised to bring it along to our Ecto-gettogether tomorrow (yes, again!) so a few more people can judge for themselves. Pink Floyd is definitely an influence, But then I hardly know anybody in roughly my age group in Germany who wasn't into Pink Floyd at least a bit. BTW, we're NOT going to see Laurie Anderson! Wir haben zu lang getroedelt (sorry, no dictionary) and now its sold out! Ack!! Who would have ever thought she was so popular? Vickie, I was so pleased when you said Happy liked the HGP! I'm really anxious about her reaction. And I'm anxious to hear it, Klaus says he likes it a lot. BTW, it may be great to get your friends into Ecto, but what I think is really exciting is getting friends FROM Ecto. Hey, I would never have met all these great people here in Boston I now seem to hang out with every other weekend! Plus the bunch of you coming to our house! I mean, pen-pals are nice, but that's nothing compared to a mailing-list. Re: fluff'nstuff. Actually for me too that's what makes this mailing list so nice. Wouldn't want to be without it. I sometimes feel it's like a infinite party, evrybody chatting to evrybody, only stretched over more time and a lot more space! (Which reminds me, any more Douglas Adams fans around?) People start talking about things and get sidetracked to other things ... Now, where did I start out? Doesn't matter. Lets keep up the fuzzy feeling! This is a funny one. I was listening to WESU this afternoon at lunchtime, and the show that was on seemed to be a promising one (we don't have our schedule finalized yet, so no one knows what's going on and when). SO, I called and requested "Waking Up", discovering that the DJ was someone I knew, but I don't think he recognized my voice. Anyway, a few minutes later he came on and said something about getting a lot of requests, and "someone called and asked for... The Happy Noses or something like that, well, sorry, I couldn't find it." After I picked myself up off the floor, I called him back. "It's Happy Rhodes, Chris. R-H-O-D-E-S." "The Happy Roads?" "No, no, no. The CD is called _Warpaint_, it's in the New Release rack, I know, I put it there!" Pause. "Sorry, I'm not seeing it." "You're not seeing it?" "No- there's nothing under T." "*T*?!? Look under R! Rhodes! That's her name!!!" Pause. "Oh! That's the name of a woman! I thought it was the name of a band, so I was looking for `The'. I see. I'll play it." Which he did, three minutes later. Talked about it during his next voice-break, even- but I'd dearly love to know what he was thinking, looking under T, when The Sugarcubes are under S and The Pretenders under P, and so on. He's nice, but rather dim, sometimes... Thought you'd all enjoy that little story- The Continuing Saga Of Getting Happy Known In The Connecticut Valley. Film at eleven. :) *---------------------------------------------* | Meredith Tarr | | *** | | "Living in the gap between past and future" | | *** | | mtarr@eagle.wesleyan.edu | *---------------------------------------------* ======================================================================== Date: 31-JAN-1992 17:29:38.99 From: MTARR@eagle.wesleyan.edu Subject: Stuff n' Stuff Hi again... Jessica, the Digest was indeed in the Archives, I got it out yesterday and printed it up. Vickie, that didn't fry my account when it arrived, but I had to get rid of it so I'd have room to send mail out- but now I have it printed out, and I'll read it once I get the tape and have listened to it. The reason for my pseudo-complaint to Jessica about long postings had to do with that program we all got sent the other day, and from which my disk allotment has not yet recovered... But now, without further ado, I bring you My Favorite Songs From _Ecto_: (In order) Off From Out From Under Me Ecto Ode I'm Going Back Would That I Could If Love Is A Game, I Win The thing that gets me with Happy's music, I've finally concluded, is not the music, or even the lyrics (you can shoot me later :), but her voice, plain and simple. The duets she sings with herself just blow me away- that she can sound one moment EXACTLY like Kate, then a measure later sound EXACTLY like Annie Lennox, then sound like the two of them singing a duet, then sound like no one else on this planet but Happy Rhodes boggles my mind. It struck me the other day when I had _Rearmament_ on my headphones, answering e-mail, that shivers were traversing my spine- the only other times the sound of a voice has done that to me, it's been Kate singing. That told me something. Sometimes, though, the musical arrangements are pretty damn cool, too. The bass in "Ecto" and the acoustic guitar of, um, I think it's "Off From Out..." grabbed me before anything else. And the electric guitar in spots grabs me, too- in one case it reminds me of something from Dire Straits, don't ask me why. But still, I must be honest and say that if Happy didn't do the vocal acrobatics she does, I wouldn't be impressed with her stuff much at all. Last night I got the lyrics to _Warpaint_ and _The Sensual World_ out of their respective archives and printed them out, because I gave my sister dubs of each for her birthday and she wanted the lyrics, too. Sitting there waiting for the newsfeed to wake up I looked through them both, and it was interesting to see in one hand Kate's text, Happy's in the other. Kate definitely wins that contest- but it's probably not fair to even compare them lyrically, since they're both coming from two different directions anyway. TSW's lyrics seem to be a lot more, I don't know, finished than those of _Warpaint_'s, but that could just be that I'm confused. :) So there you have it, my impressions of _Ecto_, and I'm sure your lives are that much more complete for it, too. :) I'll do _Rearmament_ later. Until then, Good Night, and may the good news be yours! At any rate. Spent another long day down at the station listening to new and old stuff. So here are some more albums that Ectoites may find interesting. Before I start though some thought: Jorn's post was great. I think we should plug Vickie. I've been thinking that it would be great if Gaffans and Ectoians got together and bought their own radio station...It would be great...I would even consider giving up school to DJ :) Aww well, I guess I can dream right?? New CDS: Until The End of The World: really mellow...heard the movie wasn't given good reviews...I have a feeling it will become a cult classic - I don't know why just a feeling. Anyway the music is very mellow, and amazingly enough it sounds all the same. Although Talking Heads, Julee Cruise, Patti Smith, and of _course_ Jane and k.d. lang add a bit of variety. The Jane/k.d. duet works, it is very beautiful, but I hate to say it - a trifle boring. I think I may have to hear it a few more times. Loreen Mazzacane and Suzanne Langille "Come Night" My first thoughts were that this is the weirdest thing I have ever heard, but thinking about the Nina Hagen videos at V&C's brought me back to reality. Loreen has _23_ albums out in limited editions many of which are out of print...and I can see why. This is super bizarre, low and folky, and a grating low voice which borders on the annoying. There are some nice mixes of sax, guitars, etc. It quite possibly is too eclectic even for me. I just plain found it annoying, but someone out there might like it. My major complaint is that every song sounds the same, and the lyrics are nothing special. Shotgun Wedding Lydia Lunch runs this dirty, grungy, hard ruff and wild band. Lydia has some interesting vocals. They are from Memphis (i think). It seems like their lyrics border on f Later, arggh! something happened...hmmm anyway they border on f**ked up spirituality music. I like this album a lot. It's ruff, fun, wild. In the 9:20 song "Black JuJu" they use a prayer from The Satanic Bible. The song is way cool. In another song they talk about Jesus and doing it mid-air with him. Yes, bizarre. Hmmm PMRC would probably have a cow listening to this band, probably turn their heads pray, and clutch their crosses in hope for the best. I highly recommend!! on triplex records po box 862529 los angeles ca 90086-2529 shameless plug or what! Devonsquare "Bye Bye Route 66" Yes, Bye Bye. Blah Blah Blah countryish Blah. Typical southern alt. Alana MacDonalds vocals are nice, but there is nothing special here, and certainly nothing worth mentioning. Hmm Im going to post this, see if it works and then finish up the other reviews. kIrI -- ______________ _________________ | | |hargieka@craft.camp.clarkson.edu | ^o o^ | | \\I// |-------------- ______ | -vv- _______ | _ | /\__/\ | | _^_^_ | | |< | | ) | | |oo| | | .OoO. | | | \ |o__)__( | | (___) | |______________ |______ \o | |_______| ======================================================================== From: Nimue - Gwragedd Annwn Date: Fri, 31 Jan 1992 16:20:51 EST Subject: More Groups The Golden Palominos "Drunk with Passion" on Charisma Michael Stipe sings on track one, which is a decent song 'Alive and living now.' I wouldnt be surprised if this gets radio play. However I prefer the rest of the songs on the album. Amanda Kramer leads up on most of the album. She has a good strong voice, and co-writes or writes most of the songs. 'The Haunting' is a good track that she wrote. She has a voice that reminds me of Natalie Merchant, but just a little - it is just a tad bit better. This is a decent album, that I enjoyed listening too. It did have a bit of countryish alt in it, and a couple songs were xtiany, but otherwise it was not bad at all. Texas "Why Believe in You" The title track is great. Very solid alt. Again a mix of jpalt with countryish alt. Strong female vocalist. I recommend, however I have only heard the single + a couple other tracks. I would like to see if the rest of the album is as strong. Connie Champagne "La Strada" Did I review this before. Oh well. Folky, icky vocals. I searched through the album for an interesting song - none to be found. Attempts Michelle Shocked but fails dismally. This was fairly revolting popish garbage. Someone out there may like this, but I thought it was awful. New LPs: Ween "the Pod" folx you wanted weird - you got it! This is a double shimmy disc of Dean and Gene Ween. They recorded it on a four-track cassette or something which is amazing cause it sounds really good. THe best way to describe the music is experimental, garage, doped up weirdness. "Spiritual inspiration: Boognish, mang." Guitars and keyboards and noises. Male vocals. This album is not for the light hearted or those who just can't deal with the more bizarre. The music is a raw King Missle, but is no less interesting lyrically. Has some dancable or swayable song. Overall I found it to be really interesting and fun...and one of these days ill tape it. Y Cyrff Meredith mentioned these guys. They are good! She's right, not a speck of english on the cover except for "God is Love" (or some such nonsense) I can't wait to tape this! Bongwater "The Big Sell-Out!" On Shimmy again. Ann Magnuson leads up with vocals that will make you slither and squirm - Nina Hagen anyone..well not as wild, but as weird. Kramer adds his presence, but Ann should bag him and do her own thing. This is a bizarre trip through drugs, the music industry, and some really great lyrics. This whole album is an attack at "Squids" and the Industry in general. The album cover is tooting the sex sells image as Ann's cleavage covers the whole thing - know you guys will eat that up....hand me a cover please ack! Much better than their last album. Go out and find some Bongwater. 24 Mar. New Ryuichi Sakamoto release "Hard to Swallow" June New Peter Gabriel "" Finally listened to Karen Finley...man is she NASTY! I loved "Dear PMRC" A classic! "Sushi Bar" is great too. Hey folx the "truth is hard to swallow" OLD LPS Annabouboula "Hamam" Greek. Fantastic. Lead by Anna Paidoussi-drakopoulou (that's a mouthful) this is kinda dancy, keyboardy, but is excellent. I highly recommend, this is good stuff even though there are some cheesy scratches and dubs. Hinterland "Dark Hill" (single) "Kissing The Roof of Heaven"(album) The best thing I've found yet! Irish male vocals with great music. I love this band. It borders on the etheriel - yes believe it! This album is mellow, with excellent vocals, and absolutely wonderful instrumentals. It's on Island Records. The album is composed of widely differing tunes. Each has it's own style and uniqueness. It was released in 1990 and im looking for it on CD. Info: Hinterland Hibernia House 52 Dame St. Dublin 2 Ireland. Maybe im strange but I really loved this album. It's not for all, but if you see it it's worth a try. Vickie here. Chris got back from Kansas City and brought a gift from a friend. It's a videotape with some darn cool things on it. The first thing on the tape is an episode of Britian's _The Southbank Show_ featuring one of our favorite groups, Penguin Cafe Orchestra! The only other episode of Southbank we've ever seen is the feature on Peter Gabriel during the making of _Security_. WHAT A GREAT SHOW!!! We're watching the show now (I'm keeping an eye on it as I type) and so far it's featured PCO live in concert, live footage mixed with video, and an interview with Simon Jeffries, the head honcho of PCO. The second thing is a complete live concert, which (of course) we haven't watched yet. I'm terrible at describing music, but I would put PCO in the class of Kronos Quartet (who we saw in concert a couple of weeks ago) mixed with PDQ Bach. They write serious music, but it's almost all tinged with the most wonderful sense of humor. It's nearly all instrumental, and you never know what strange things you'll hear next. Hawaiian mixed with bluegrass mixed with baroque. HELP! Can anyone more articulate help me describe PCO? All I know is that we *LOVE* them and definitely very extremely highly recommend them. I can't pick an album, because they are all so very good, but my favorite is _Broadcasting From Home_, if that helps. I did fast-forward the tape to watch what Rick stuck on the end, which are 2 videos for the group Miranda Sex Garden! They are too cool! The first video is an acapella piece from the album _Madra_ and the second is a video to the 12" "beat" version of "Gush Forth My Tears" which is way way way cool! Unfortunately, it's the short version, but it is the CD single mix, not the acapella album version. The video is fairly simple, the two main themes being a) showing the three (very beautiful) women walking through the forest all dressed in long, black velvet dresses, very renaissance-ish, and b) the three standing behind a pane of glass, dark behind them, with water pouring down the glass. Very surreal. The music is the dance-beat version, yet the entire video is in slow motion. How cool. He also stuck something on I already had, which is a video for the Single Gun Theory song "From A Million Miles." I need to put together another Pass-along tape I think. The wheels are turning.....
