Ecto has been a source of much happiness for me. Have a very happy holiday, all of you... Bravo) Subject: blah-blah-blah :) Date: Fri, 24 Dec 1993 03:24:59 +0300 (MSD) Hello out there! I am having some troubles reading Ecto, so it turned in almost digest-mode, but that'll be ok as soon as I finish all the holiday preparations. For now, though, I think it's time to bore you all down with some screenfuls of my ramblings on altogether unrelevant topics :) First of all (Hey, I even don't know if all of you will get to read this before actual Christmas :) ), Merry Christmas to every one of you, wonderful ecto-people, and those close and/or dear to you. Concerning top-ten lists... hmmm.. okay, I've seen so much of them here (the WANTED list is going to be about the size of my next ten years income, I'd guess :) ) so I just feel kinda obliged to put up something of myself. But don't expect to see the list before a lots of excuses ;) First, I'm always at a terrible loss to rank something (yeah, Vickie, probably even more than you), especially as insubstantial as music. Second, I'm more than eclectic in my music tastes, and not exactly concentrated. So this will not be a _top ten_ list, or even _1993_ top ten list, it'll be something like a list of music I listened through this ending year. So here we go, in no particular order... Happy Rhodes Warpaint, Rhodesongs, Rhodes I, Equipoise, Rearmament, Rhodes II Well, what can I say...I'm still in some kind of 'dazed and confused' state in what regards this music. I'm still experiencing it, at home, while going to work, walking through a snow blizzard, or sitting in a friends home, riding a shuttle train... It has come to me in the most suitable time I could ever choose myself. The vocal range is immense. Lyrics is... well, its an astonishing feeling of someone duplicating your mind, despite the vast difference of life circumstances. So in short, it is going to be a significant part of me. Dead Can Dance Passage In Time, Into the Labyrinth It's less than half a year that I was introduced to DCD, but I liked it immediately... The beauty of sound, the 'druidic' slant of the whole thing just entices me. Nice music to listen to in candlelight, btw. Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here, The Wall, Dark Side of the Moon, etc... My all-time favorite. WYWH was one of the first musical things to plunge inside me deeply enough, and that's an unforgettable experience. Aquarium Ikhtiologia, Radio Afrika, Den' Serebra, Deti Dekabrya, etc. (Ihtiology, Radio Africa, Day of Silver, Children of December) It's a russian group, though its leader and soul Boris Grebenschikov has recorded an album in States, called Radio Silence - an altogether uncharacteristic one, to say the least. _Highly_ ectoid stuff :) Group started quite a while back and style of their music varied greatly with time. Lyrics are just fantastic, though quite weird for the unexperienced :) . Paul probably can confirm that I can pick a quote from Aquarium on virtually any subject, and some people in local Fidonet conferences told me that a message or two _without_ Aquarium quotes could be nice sometimes :) Enio Morricone Michael Nyman Both are movie composers. First one did music for such known pieces as _Once Upon a Time in America_, _The Good, the Bad and the Ugly_, _The Professional_ and lots more. Very good, though illustrative (doesn't feel as good without the picture) music. The second one is primary composer for Peter Greenway (sp? most possibly it's wrong) films. Great stuff. Vangelis namely the soundtrack for Bladerunner DDT Aktrisa Vesna (Actress Spring) Another Russian group. While I consider some of their songs too 'heavy' for me (not like heavy metal, just too oppressive, perhaps), this album is absolutely wonderful. Melodies and the voice of Yuri Shevchuk do all the soul-grabbing thing. Bravo (assorted) Yet another Russian group No, it doesn't have any relationship with my name :) In fact, it has the accent on 'a' while my name has it on 'o' I like the 'old' somgs of theirs, while Zhanna Aguzarova was still with them. They did nice 'retro' things with a good touch of something what made them not stale at all... and Zhanna's voice is just great. BTW, Alex Gibbs will have a sampler of Bravo, DDT and Aquarium by February, I think :) (and maybe some other music as well) Sting (assorted) Never got around to getting any actual albums, but songs like 'Englishman in New York' and 'I'm mad about you' and some others are certainly worth it. Suzanne Vega Solitude Standing, Time of the Open Hand At the moment I'm inclined to consider her as a forerunner of Happy in my musical experience :) - when the voice is not hidden by the music like in the most of mainstream things, but plays the major role by itself. Well, I guess that's about it. Some other names in a quick list: Siouxsie and the Banshees Leonard Cohen Beatles Veronica Dolina J.M.Jarre Genesis Peter Gabriel Cocteau Twins Alex Harvey CAN Eurythmics/Lennox Chyurlenis (classic music) ...... Now getting on to other topics. Regarding Scotland EctoParty idea - Paul has his birthday at June 21st and we thought it could be nice to see the Sun rising over the Heelstone the next day :)- so we will possibly try to make it to Stonehenge this summer, who knows... and Scotland isn't actually very far from there. What for the historical value of EctoPartying - today (it's 2:57am now :) ) we're going to have something of a Christmas party with my frineds and I'm going to tests the recipes of blue fuzzy drinks taken from rutgers archive, courtesy the German EctoPartyists. Well, I better get some sleep now :) Hugs to everyone ;) -- Michael E. I'll out-fuzz myself. :-) Hope you all have a wonderful day whatever you do (it's 10pm on Christmas Eve here in Melbourne, where we get Christmas first :-). If you're not interested, have a Happy Hugmas instead. :) Here's my "best albums of the year" list for 1993. It was rather easy to select the albums, because I have the good habit of entering a newly acquired CD immediately into a database file. After selecting the entries for 1993 and removing the singles, there were only 11 albums left, so all I had to do was to delete my least favourite album of the year. :) 1. Kate Bush - The red shoes I loved this album on first listen, probably because I was in the right mood for it. Then there came a period when I liked some of the songs and wasn't too impressed by the others. I've played it a lot again recently, and I think it's beginning to grow on me as a whole. My favourite song is still "Lily". 2. Jane Siberry - When I was a boy I remember being overwhelmed by it when I first heard it. I haven't listened to it much lately, so I'm not too sure about it now; I need to listen to it some more. 3. Happy Rhodes - Equipoise Although I liked it initially, this one took a long time to grow on me. I remember being disappointed with it at first, but now I love it. I still like _Ecto_ and _Warpaint_ better, though. 4. Eleanor McEvoy My new artist of the year. :) Wonderful songs with great lyrics, and I love her voice. I sent Beth a tape of the album when she was in Orkney, and she liked it. 5. Mitch Elrod's swim team - The muse of intent Thanks to Bob for promoting this album! I ordered it because Happy liked it and I wanted to see Happy's cover artwork, but the music is great. Sometimes the meaning of the lyrics is a mystery to me and at other times I'm impressed by them. :) 6. Happy Rhodes - RhodeSongs "Summer" is such a beautiful song! It's one of the very few songs that really hurt when I listen to them, because the lyrics bring back some rather complicated memories. I'd love to hear the story behind this song from Happy. 7. The moon seven times I find it weird that people like this better than Area, because I like the few Area songs I've heard (all acquired via Doug's tape dubbing project) better than this. I still like to listen to this one though, but I find it a bit too long (I like the beginning of the album much better than the end). 8. Sam Brown - 43 minutes I was rather pleasantly surprised by this. I like this one a lot better than Sam's earlier albums _Stop!_ and _April Moon_. I think she's growing in the right direction. 9. Bjork - Debut I had to listen to this a few times before I started to like it. The song that grabbed me initially was "There's more to life than this". 10. Heidi Berry A wonderful warm fuzzy blue album. :) Happy holidays! Albert ======================================================================== Date: Sat, 25 Dec 93 6:23:22 EST From: WretchAwry Subject: IRC help Hi'yall! Hey, I was flipping through Wired magazine and there was a short blurb about IRC. At the end of the article 3 telnet sites were given. I tried all 3 and reached the first one fine. It put me right into IRC. The second site wouldn't accept the "irc" login or password, and the 3rd wouldn't even "answer" to get me a login. I'll give all 3 addresses, just in case the problems with the second two are only temporary. To reach IRC, telnet to: 140.117.11.33 (login: irc / password: irc) [this site worked fine] 140.115.83.200 (same as above) [except that it wouldn't accept them] 140.115.83.201 (same as above) [this telnet failed, unknown reasons] I'm a novice at IRC myself, but I have learned a few things here and there, so if you get through to IRC using one of these, and you've never used IRC before, here are some tips I'll pass along: Put a "/" before everything you type *when it's a command*. For instance, the first thing you should do is have a look at the HELP menu. To do that, type "/help" and return. A list should appear. I set my "capture" on and got what appeared. I cleaned it up a little bit and deleted some things, but here is what you should generally see. I added MY comments in [these] brackets. All typed commands are in "", but don't type the quotes. Hitting Return (or Enter) is a given. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ "telnet 140.117.11.33" Trying 140.117.11.33... Connected to 140.117.11.33. Fast! I have to click my mouse to get the pages to stop long enough to read the names, but I don't know how anyone else would do it. Experiment. When the /names is typed and the list starts scrolling, you'll see not only the names of the channels, but also the nicknames of the people currently on that channel. If you are looking specifically for a certain channel and don't see it, that means it's not a "permanent" channel. For instance, if you look at the list and don't see #ecto, that means that no one is on #ecto currently. Don't fret, because you have *power* and can create the channel. Type /join #ecto and automatically #ecto is created and you'll be on it, so then if someone else types /names, they'll see the channel and your nickname along with all the others] To send a *private* message to someone else....../msg [The is the name of the person you want to send the private message to. After the name and a space, you can type what you want. When you hit Return, only they will see what you've written. Private messages sent to you are easy to spot, because the name of the person sending it is enclosed by stars - *Equipoise* - like that. Be careful that you don't answer a private message in the group. You don't have to be in the same group with someone to send to and receive messages from them. You can't send a private message to someone who isn't in IRC though] There are lots more commands at your disposal, but those are the main ones. If anyone more familiar with IRC wants to add or comment on anything, feel free. I know that different sytems work in different ways, so I might have left out something important. There are things I don't know about, and would like to learn. For instance, when I type /names the list of channel names will start scrolling. Is there a way to get them one page at a time? Also, I find I can't do anything until the *entire* list of names scrolls. Is there a way to quit from /names before the list is finished? Have fun! I have direct IRC access at my own site, so personally I have never needed to telnet to another IRC site, so you *would* generally see my e-mail address. I have had a fantastic few days so far (about a week actually), and have had a very nice three days or say staying with Martin Hanley in Bath. No eagles though as far as I can remember. Fantastic experience. For those interested, Martin has found some work that he will begin in January, possibly with email but probably not was the impression I got. He says hello to all that remember him, and hopes to be joining us again. And Bath is a wonderful city. Go there if you are ever in England. Anyway, I'll keep this short. Apologies to the Anglophiles whose phone numbers I went to such trounle to getand then intelligently left them in Holland.
