Reading everybody's top 10 lists has reminded me both of what an awesome year it has been for music, and also just how much is out there I want but don't have yet. I do, however, have one thing I didn't know I had. woj, you forgot your Margot Smith CD in the morass of piles that is my desk this weekend. Would you like me to mail it back to you, or can I keep it as ransom for my CD box? ;> (Anthony, looks like the long-awaited review from woj will have to wait a bit longer- but I'll be ready to post one soon!) Nutella, hm? Interesting, says she... I was suddenly reminded of a CD I've been meaning to mention around here for a little while- a compilation of music by New Zealand women came into the station a couple weeks ago, called _Shrew'd: A Compilation of NZ Women's Music_. (This means music by people with two X chromosomes, not necessarily "womyn's music".) I've only had a chance to sample a few tracks, but those have really stood out in my mind: I can't remember who the other artist was, but there is one amazine song called "Seas Of The Moon" by a woman named Sandra Bell. Anybody out there have any more information on her? (Phillip?) The next time I'm at the station (in about a month) I'll have to take some time to jot down a few notes, so I can tap the wealth of knowledge that is ecto and get filled in. That is, if woj can't answer my questions for me first. ;) Happy Solstice, all! The main story featured a large photograph of a female weight lifter. This woman was all muscle. There was so little fat here that she was lacking (how to phrase this without getting flamed?) any semblance of breasts. The story went on to encourage female readers to turn five pounds of fat into five pounds of muscle; it takes up less room and you'll be leaner. Then it went on to say: "Five pounds of fat is like a big fluffy pillow, but five ponds of muscle is like a good hard book, a dictionary..." Now to each their own, but I for one would rather snuggle with a pillow than a hard book. And I like breasts. If that person in the picture is the 90's ideal, I'm hopelessly out of date! Please, I mean no sexism or anything. Sometimes I think people are not really in control of their libidos, we just like what appeals to us on some inner level. Someone here said that thin men weren't their type; this is fine. Someone else responded "What have you got against thin men?" - probably nothing, people just like what they like! Anyway, my point is, I wish everybody would accept themselves for what they are. If you really obsess over some flaw in your physique, real or imagined, do what you can to be what you want, but keep an open mind. Oh yeah, the other story, right next to it - the headline read "Men, get skinny if you want to live longer!" and went on about some new findings that said, basically, that I, being six feet tall and um, middle aged, should be 166 or less to be in the healthiest group. I haven't seen 166 since I got married, and I doubt I'll see it again. Send flowers to Fred's Funeral home, 1234 Fourier St., Atom City USA. Thanks for your attention. Now that I've got that off my - chest, I feel better. I doubt anything I wrote was politically correct, and I hope I didn't offend anyone here by revealing deep inner secrets of my libido! Basically, I like people mostly for who they are, so I guess I'm OK after all. This was kinda fun to write. I was inspired to remember the article by the recent post about the intestinal bypass. Well, back to the top ten lists, which are also very entertaining. Kudos to Steve Fagg and Anthony Horan for such well detailed lists. I did not buy a lot of CDs this year so I may be a bystander; then again I may come up with something by year's end... (congratulations! to Courtney and Kiri as well). I have been lurking for a while and have found Ecto to be a truly wonderful place. It is nice to find a group of people with musical tastes similar to my own. This is the first spot on the net that I have found where people can really open up and not worry about the insensitivity of others. It's also nice to find a group of people who have such good tastes in music (most of the time :-)). On the whole, I think this is the best that the net has to offer. On another note, I am looking for a list of Happy's albums. The stores in this area (W. suburban Philly) carry some of her music, but I gather that there are several others that I have not seen yet. I have Warpaint and Equipoise, and I'd like to get any others. Could someone mail me a list (or point me in the direction of one) and information on mail ordering or a local place that might carry them? Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks. I lost the original post about Chris not going up to Happy and Kevin at WOMAD, just to say hi. Chris, I remember you posting about this when it happened and I don't know if you saw my response. I'd been talking to Happy on the phone and mentioned your post, saying "another Ectophile besides Tracy Barber was there and saw you, but didn't want to bother you". She said it would have been fine, great, perfectly ok with her if you had said hi. She would have wanted to meet you, honest! You're an *Ectophile* and that's a magic word to Happy. She really, *honestly*, sincerely appreciates the support of Ectophiles, and would have *wanted* to meet you. Just so you know, in case you see her and Kevin at another concert or something. Just say "hi, I'm on Ecto" and her ears will perk right up. She *loves* us, Chris! > It must be tough being famous, if you just > want to relax and enjoy a show. There's *quite* a difference between Madonna being mobbed by hundreds of fans at a time, and one or two Ectophiles going up to Happy just to say hi. Happy *is* very shy, and probably wouldn't go out to dinner or anything, but an informal chat with an Ectophile is something I'm sure she'd enjoy. > The celebrity/fan relationship is indeed strange and fragile. It is indeed, but as long as fans are polite and don't weigh her down with expectations, she does like hearing from people who appreciate her music. I wrote down the songs as she performed them, and then lost my notebook the next day. Grrr! Three weeks later, it finally turned up, to my great relief... silly that something as foolish as a misplaced notebook should cause so much distress. It's not as if its contents were vital to my continued existence. Anyway, here's the playlist for the concert: Possession; Drawn to the Rhythm; Circle; Wait; Lost; Ice; Elsewhere; I Will Not Forget You; Good Enough; The Path of Thorns; Hold On; Mary; Steaming. 1st encore: Plenty; Into the Fire. 2nd encore: Fumbling Towards Ecstasy. Sarah left the stage at the end of the vocals, then one by one the musicians left until only the computer-driven synthesizers were left to finish the show. She told a story about composing Elsewhere: on a previous tour, she was ill, in danger of losing her voice, and unable to sleep for headaches. She took a couple of codeine pills and went to lie down. She didn't really get any sleep, but felt as if she were observing herself from the outside - an out-of-body experience. The song was written just afterwards, thinking back on this way of seeing herself... At the beginning of the first encore, she introduced the musicians (they were very good, by the way, and the mix was just right: no problems with anyone trying to steal the show). And said something she's said in the past at Montreal shows: that Montreal is her favorite stop on a Canadian tour, because the concert is so warmly received. whee! justin ======================================================================== From: Ethan_Straffin@next.com (Ethan Straffin) Date: Tue, 21 Dec 93 23:35:39 -0800 Subject: Random venting, etc. The "In Case You Had Better Things To Do With Your Time Than Read Letters To TV Guide" Department: After reading your article "TV That's Good for Your Kids" [Oct. 30], it was reported to me that Bert and Ernie are gay.
