Anyway The Piano was a wonderful movie. I know I was giggling the whole time, mostly because there were a lot of jibes that I think slipped by most Americans - at least those that have not lived in NZ. The movie was also *very* pro-Maori. I can only say this because I lived in a small town where racism (in both directions) was prevalent. >From all the slag and nasty comments I have heard about the Maoris, and to have known many personally,I was overjoyed to see them cast in such a wonderful light. The movie did an excellent job in bringing out their lovely sense of humor, their brisk intelligence and sixth sense, and just a tad of their culture thrown in for good measure :) If you haven't seen the movie, I highly recommend. Oh, just give Ecto a fair chance. Based on your other selections, I'd peg "Project 499" and "Would That I Could" as other possibilities. And the rest of the albums is great too. >By the way, does anybody know what time period "Summer" is from? Is it a new >bonus track or an old bonus track? New. At least to *my* ears (and by that I mean that it sounds more like her recent writing style, despite sounding like none of her other songs; I can't imagine it being written too long ago) >And were the RhodeSongs "acoustic versions" >recorded at the same time the album versions were, or did she re-do a bunch at >one time? They were _not_ done at the same time as the albums. "Given In" in its revised form was first done on Happy's first WXPN appearance. I have no idea where/when the guitar workup of "In Hiding" originated (and I must say that I prefer it to the original!). The tribute version of "Feed the Fire" debuted at the WXPN fundraiser concert, where Happy was on a bill with the likes of 10,000 Maniacs and other 'national' acts. "Ashes to Ashes", of course, was on HR^5. Basically, though, you should keep in mind that the 1st4 (V1-Ecto) were written and performed by Happy and no one else. The "cheesy synths" can be attributed to two things: she didn't have synths at home to play with, program, and learn; and, she was heavily influenced by Wendy Williams. I don't know if you've heard Williams' intepretations of Bach, but if you have, you'll instantly recognize some of the stylistic concepts in Happy's earlier synth work. Happy reworked a lot of her songs for her band before the '92 mini-tour. She wanted to update the sound and come up with arrangements for the full band, since she had played/multi-tracked all the instruments and vocals on her early albums. In some cases the acoustic songs got a lot more rock. And in some cases, they stayed acoustic, but sound fuller. "Given In" is a great example. With Ray playing bass, it just takes on a different feel. "Ashes to Ashes" is similar, with Kevin on bass. Happy has said (albeit *years* ago) that while she played many instruments (bass, synth, programming a drum machine, etc), she felt most competent on an acoustic guitar. Your compilation looked really great. My only difference would have been to leave off "The Revelation," which I don't particularly care for (though I know it's a fave of many ectophiles). I probably would have changed it for "Let Me Know, Love" or "No One Here". Deciding what to eat and wear is a matter of personal and cultural tastes and ethics, and thus should be beyond outside criticism (within some broad bounds). Any decision is as valid as any other. If we extended Steve Fagg's comments a little further, should we look askance at Jewish refusal to eat pork or Hindu refusal to eat beef? To take it to it absurd logical extreme, should we be squeamish about eating human beings? Live and let live. Mitch's package _finally_ arrived today (Wednesday) [Mitch!!
