While not everyone will agree with each other, especially wrt religion and politics, the history of Ecto shows that the topic will be *discussed* and not flamed about. I know how important some people view their faith in whatever religion they are affiliated with, and I also believe that one can be religious without subscribing to any one particular branch of organized religion. I personally would never denigrate anyone's faith. Discussion is fine, if it's something that relates to you personally. Ecto wouldn't be a place to attempt "converting" anyone, but if I can talk about my own personal non-belief, why should I have any problems with someone saying that they *do* believe? My second cat has diarrhea he can't seem to shake (we go to the vet tomorrow), I lost my transit pass this morning (I need only pay cash today and tomorrow), I got about 90 minutes of sleep last night due to the demands of finalizing my tape of HGP intros, and I don't feel up to reading any more mailing lists today and I have a big backlog of non-ecto posts from the last two days. Is there hope for my ultimate redemption? :-) >Philip (who never fails to be entranced by Mitch's skills with the English language...) It is amazing, in retrospect, how far I've come since the time over 25 years ago when I spoke just as obscurely as I do now, and my old high school journal- ism teacher said to me, "Mitchell, talk English." :-) Actually, if you like the way I mangle the language in these pages, you'll love the way I do so in my opening monolog on the HGP tapes. It may be fortunate, in retrospect, that the Hooked on Phonics infomercial knocked out all but 1/2 hour of _World News Now_ last night, helping me to concentrate on the business of laying down those tracks that needed laying, and weren't laid during the Thanksgiving weekend. (Now if we can just prevent the project from laying an egg in the final analysis :-) :-(' .) Court says, in pertinent part: > [...] Call me anal, I dont care!! So sue me :-). Great anecdote about the soap. Wish my last affray with a hotel mamagement was over something so trivial. WRT Brian's (I think) paean to _Out_ magazine: The current one has a story on Melissa Etheridge, which was the sole rationale for my buying it. WRT Steve et al's thread on the Anglo-American comparative social construction of weight: might it have something to do with the historic objective state of the countries' respective economies, as well as the two culture's subjective perceptions of each other's economies? After all, the wartime rationing of some commodities continued in Britain until into the 50s, at a time when the States was wearing its prosperity on its sleeve. I'm sure that similar comparisons were operative in other decades. Off to see if I can get the HGP master tapes into the snailmail. He lived on a high mountain with his sharp-witted wife, Calculus. The reason Maybe lived on a high mountain was because he could never decide if he wanted to live East, West, North or South of the mountain, so Calculus solved his problem by having a house built on top of the mountain. One sunny day, Calculus and Maybe went for a walk. It took them about two hours to get started because first Maybe had to decide if he really did want to go for a walk. Then he had to decide what clothes to wear. It shouldn't have been a hard decision, he only owned five togas, and they were all the same. Finally, Calculus told him what to wear and they set off. Calculus led the way (a good thing too, or else Maybe would have taken two more hours trying to decide which way to go.) Calculus was a very clever goddess and she had been trying to think of a way to get rid of him for a long time. She didn't love him. Their union had been arranged in order to try and teach Maybe to be a little more confident in his decisions. But since Calculus always made Maybe's decisions for him, it just got harder for him to make his own decisions. The walk they took was peaceful and serene. They walked down the mountainside and into the forest. When they came to the river, Maybe couldn't decide if he wanted to cross the river or follow the path alongside the river. Calculus told him to cross the river, which was very rough and dangerous. He went into the water, but Calculus stayed on the bank. She had calculated that at the rate the river was rushing that Maybe would be swept off his feet in about 20 seconds. In 15 seconds Maybe realized what was going on and couldn't decide if he wanted to die or not. Then, in the last split-second, Maybe decided that he did not want to die and begged the river goddess to help him. Instantly, the river goddess made the center of the river calm and the water at the banks became rough enough to collapse the bank Calculus was standing on. Calculus fell into the water and disappeared. It is said that Calculus changed her mean ways and now is responsible for calculating the course and current of the river. Maybe lost his job of being the god of Indecision and was made the god of Decisions. (Only now, his name is Sure.) ---------------------------------------------------------------- Can you ever forgive me? :-) Vickie ======================================================================== From: snpf@ugcs.caltech.edu (The Duchess Of York) Subject: Re: Mercedes Lackey Date: Sat, 11 Dec 1993 02:30:42 -0800 (PST) Erik says: > I saw that you're moving up here.
