Damn, I *knew* I was forgetting to speak up about something, and that's Ingrid Karklins. What he said, folks. Woj, I guess you were in Spain or somewhere when I mentioned her. It's funny, because I said she was a cross between Marta Sebestyen & Laurie Anderson. It's hard to pick favorite songs because I like them all, but I *know* my favorite song title is "Incredible March of the Spiny Lobsters." :-) Steve Williams, a rec.music.gaffa reader (who, I think, also has something to do with _Lone Star Lionhearts_, but don't quote me on that) knows her. She lived/lives(?) in Austin, TX. I found out a couple of weeks ago that she used to live in Chicago, but I guess she doesn't live here anymore. Hope you East Coasters don't get too mired down in the snow. We were lucky and only got a few inches. I agree, I keep saying I'll have to get that album. It was funny to hear Peter say about Kate "her album's due in the spring and if you believe that you'll believe anything cause she takes even longer than I do to work on albums" or something along those lines. I was in Tower last night to pick up multiple copies of Pulse (the HappyDance issue) and was *very* pleased to see that they had copies of all 5 albums! One each of the 1st4, and 3 copies of Warpaint. I forgot to look on the MUZE system to see if they're all listed. The 1st4 weren't the last time I looked. Other Towers have had the 1st4 for months, but the Chicago Tower just wouldn't carry them, until now. I'd love to know what changed their minds. There were lots of other cool things in the Pulse. HoL & Lisa Germano listed in someone's Desert Island Discs, Jane's Bound By the Beauty listed as someone's all-time favorite album, great reviews of US and Loreena and Robin Holcomb Neneh Cherry and other things. I also picked up a cassingle of "Steam" (they didn't have any CD singles) with a remix of "Games Without Frontiers" on the b-side. The only CD I bought was Zap Mama, which was nice to find. It was in the International section, under "France" of all places. Well, I guess that's as good a place as any, but I didn't specifically look for it, it just happened to jump out at me. I always look in Greece for Eleftheria and Haris, and I look in India for Sheila Chandra, but they never have either. (I know that Sheila's from England, but they do have _Silk_ in the India section, so that's where I look. _Silk_ is a pretty worthless compilation by Sheila Chandra, so it's too bad that's all Tower has.) I at least survived the storm with no problems. I'd have to rate it as the second worst snow storm I've seen with the worst being the Blizzard of '78, other people might reverse that depending on where they were for both storms. No power outages for me, and only a little bit of street flooding on Friday. The storm was mostly rain until the wee hours of Saturday morning and then all snow until the wee hours of Sunday morning. With a total snow fall of somewhere between 2 and 3 feet. The key to having a good storm is planning: Friday morning I loaded the car with my winter camping gear and my X-country skis and that night I crashed with some friends. We were all set to survive without heat and electricity if need be. We spent the day on Saturday skiing on the golf course behind their apartment complex :^) By Sunday night the roads were mostly clear and I went home to find that my own apartment had survived just fine without me. The low point of the weekend was when a snow plow almost smashed into my parked car. Hopefully everyone else has similarly benign tales to tell. But I know that some of my co-workers are still without heat or electricity... Hmmm... for some music content: I recently picked up two Siouxsie and the Banshees CD's: Superstition and Nocturne. They told us (those meteorologists) that we'd get socked by this storm Thursday, but we got a light drizzle. Then they said we'd be hip-deep in snow by sundown Friday, and we got a flurry. But that was here in Troy. Two people on our staff who live east of here, near the Massachusetts border, didn't make it to work Friday, and they're still out today. One said her power is back on this morning, but she won't be finished digging out until at least tonight. There's another drawback to living in the Berkshires, I guess. We finally got through to family in New Jersey Saturday morning and found that one of my sisters-in-law had spent nearly four hours making the trip home from her job in Manhattan. The subways were out, so she walked from 44th Street onthe West Side to the World Trade Centers, and there found that the PATH system was down, too. She ended up waiting for a shuttle bus that took her to Hoboken. There, she learned that the lowlands between there and Jersey City were flooded, so the bus wasn't running to JC (despite the fact that there's a perfectly dry route). Since she was dressed for the weather, she walked home. She was still thawing when we talked to her Saturday. Her sister stayed with friends in Brooklyn, and her mother was home from work Friday, so that's the only storm nightmare story for our family. The pictures in the paper imply others had an even worse day, though. Oh... Saturday morning we awoke to blizzard conditions, but the snow stopped by early afternoon, and now they're predicting three days of lovely weather for us. I'd better get out boots and shovels. alanm ======================================================================== Subject: Happy, the weather, and other stories Date: Mon, 14 Dec 92 12:26:20 EST From: Angelos Kyrlidis Hi, Jeff writes: > And especially if he gave it the rousing sort of >compliment he gave Jah Wobble's Invaders from Mars's "Vision of You" ^^^^^^^^^ :) of the heart!!!
