HGP - decisions decisions ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 06 Dec 91 11:05:20 CST From: "Jeff Lueck (Chip)" Subject: Tower Records in Chicago Mitch, I am surprised about your experience at Tower. When I went, there was no "give to the needy" discount, but all the checkout counters were fully staffed. (I've been there three times now - each on a weekend). However, when it comes to finding something, forget it. I used their computer to see what Kate collections they carry. One of the items listed "Hounds of Love from the Secret Policeman's Ball". I was curious about this and asked a clerk where I could find this item and his response was "we have 3 million items in stock and I wouldn't know where to look for it". So, I found their check out process to be efficient (I even got a free T-Shirt because I spent more than $50), but they didn't seem too thrilled in helping me find what I was looking for. Selection: It's certainly gone downhill from when I used to go there in High School, but they still have some good stuff. Tower was the source of my first and second _Foxtrot_ CDs...a friend called me from Tower at around 11:00 one night to tell me he'd just found a copy of it and asking if he should buy it and bring it by my house. 40 minutes later, I discovered that the CD skipped, so I hopped in my car and drove down, where they made a prompt exchange with the other copy of _Foxtrot_ they'd gotten in. It seems to be a mostly mall-ish store these days, albeit a huge one. Their import section is okay--the only times I've ever seen anything by Area in a record store was at this Tower...I've seen _The Perfect Dream_ (which I *still* haven't gotten back from my father who borrowed it months ago) and _Between the Purple and the Pink_ there. Service: well, I'm not the sort to ask for help in a record store...I almost always know what I want and where to look for it. Counter help has never been a problem though. I usually go down there late on week nights (~11:00-11:30) because it's easy to find parking spaces, and there's always at least one person at the counter, usually 2. Not always ultra-speedy, but I s'pose that can be expected that late at night. Over-all, though, I like the store, or I wouldn't still be going there after 5 years. I've bought bunches of singles (almost all of my Pixies singles, f'rinstance) and a midlin' number of CDs there, including many I couldn't find elsewhere despite being at least semi-major-label releases. And besides, they published Angelos DIDs. Has anybody mailed a copy of it to Happy? Surely it's the first time her name has appeared in an issue of a magazine published by a multinational record store. Jeff |Jeffrey C. I finally got around to timing my contribution to Happy's tape: 4mins 25sec. My spoken message will probably be 15 seconds or so. Jessica, you too? It's strange to me that you say you were surprised to find someone else who had read and enjoyed L'Engle's stuff- all my friends when I was a kid were ver much into her, and we read them all. My next-favorite of hers is _The Young Unicorns_. It's the only book I've ever read where after I finished it I immediately turned back to page 1 and started again. I wonder if Happy has read anything by her? Re "CiTW", Jessica, although I haven't heard it, just the fact that it's a b-side copyright 1991 tells me she slapped it together, like she did most of her other b-sides. I just hope she's not doing this with the album (considering the time it's taking, I'd guess not :)... *----------------------------------------------* | Meredith Tarr | | *** | | "In a world where carpenters get resurrected,| | anything can happen!" -A. You've got a lot to catch up on. Happy was signed to Sony Music, appeared on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, announced plans for a World Tour, Sung live on international TV in a duet with Kate Bush (it was a benefit performance) and agreed to take the starring role in Terry Gilliam's next film project. Watta week! :-) Vickie ps, I too have been cut off. The same site further down the line that went down a couple of weeks ago is down again. I was very suprised to see my hostage message this morning, because I had it bounced back to me (along with some other things which I'll re-post) last night. In frustration I "f" forwarded it, editing the bounce header off. It worked! Have to go to my temp job now, and I'll be back later. If my luck holds, I'll post a birthday list tonight, but just in case... HAPPY BIRTHDAY LAURA!!! (one day early) pps, Klaus, I got your message ok, and I will set the date tonight as a cut off for the HGP. Harry, my address is... Vickie Mapes 1627 W. Vickie here. Really and truly! Yet again, a site up the line is down and only 1 of 4 things I've posted to ecto (the hostage post) in the past few days has appeared. I'll keep trying. I can't get to gaffa either, many things have bounced back to me in the past week. In coming is fine, so very quickly... The deadline for the HGP is Dec. 15. Please try to have your tapes to me as close as possible to that date. That's not much time, but you have a few days leeway, since I won't actually start putting together the tape until after the 15th. Getting Happy's tape to her is the most important thing, so I want to try to mail it to her by at least the 20th. You all probably won't start getting your tapes back until after the first of the year, though I'll try to do as many as possible before then. Send a 100 minute tape to... Vickie Mapes 1627 W. Farwell, #2N Chicago, IL 60626 IRC's are fine, Stephen (loved your poem btw!) but I can't help you with the amount. If you can only find a 90 minute tape, all I cn say is that you might not get everything everyone else does, but send it anyway, because we're still not sure of the final timing. ------------------------------- Since I can't port files into this account, I can't do a birthday list, but I didn't forget Laura... HAPPY BIRTHDAY LAURA !!!!!! ---------------------------------- Martin, welcome back! ---------------------------------- Got to get off now. I'm incognito on gaffa with this account.
