Well, Ecto may be slow, but it's not blasting my e-box to shreds any more, so there's a bright side... :) Wow. _A Wrinkle In Time_ mentioned on Ecto! That happens to be my all-time favorite book (and I like a lot of books a lot), but one of my all-time favorite authors, Madeline L'Engle. This woman defies description, and I don't know enough words of praise. I've read _Wrinkle_ at least fifteen times, since I was about 7 years old, and each time I get something new out of it. I've liked everything she's written, although it did take me a few tries to get into _A Swiftly Tilting Planet_, probably because I wasn't old enough for it at the time. "Something's rotten in Camazotz..." Anyway. This is getting bad: I heard about an album called _Famous Blue Raincoat_, and since then I've had to try three or more times before _Fuzzy Blue Raincoat_ leaves my brain!!! (Incidentally, it's an album of Leonard Cohen covers by Jennifer Warnes, which I am in the process of looking for.) "In Hiding" is an amazing tune. Martin, Mitch...all these M-names... ;) Sorry if I come across as confused sometimes, probably has something to do with the fact that I am. *----------------------------------------------* | Meredith Tarr | | *** | | "In a world where carpenters get resurrected,| | anything can happen!" -A. I tihnk I will have to find her books and read them again, it's been a *long* time but they made *very* strong impressions on me. In fact, i'm pretty sure they helped to make me the way I am. *sigh* I've had the pleasure of listening to two Sarah McLachlan singles. If you like her, i'd say they're worth it. (*hopefully* they'll one day be released here? as imports at $10 it's a bit much. But even that, worth it). "Into the Fire" includes versions of "Sad Clown" (from Touch) and "Black" areanged and performed somewhat differently. they say (CBC Session). I assume it's a radio or tv show in canada?? Both songs are done quite differently from the album tracks. (musically different). "The Path of Thorns" has a "radio edit" and the album version (the radio edit is slightly different and fades out early), and a "violin mix" of "Shelter" that is very nice. a bit sparser even than the album version, but to stress the strings. it's nice. I'm at the moment listening to an Enya single - "how can i keep from singing". the song itself doesn't sound different from the album version though i'll have to listen to the album again to be sure. the single also includes "Oi'che Chiu'n" (Silent Night) and "`S fagain mo bhaile" which seems new. Inside, it says "also available the album Shepherd Moons and the video Moonshadows". (there is a picture of each - on moonshadows the colors are very similar, but she is wearing a robe, perhaps? it's a tiny picture). Does anyone know what's on it? On the album itself I love most the songs that remind me of Mouth Music. It's only had one listen so far, so i can't say too much, but i tihnk this one will have to grow on me, whereas watermark i liked straight off, and "Enya" i simply loved at first listen. I've also finally heard "candle in the wind". Hmm. Well, agian, it was only one listen. I wasn't overly thrilled though. I *LOVE* rocketman. but candel inthe wind sounds to me like she put down chords to work from, and then said "eh, lets just leave it at the chords". I can't imagine why, I'd tihnk kate would want to work out exaclty waht was in her head. So, maybe it's as she imagined in her head? scary. it wasn't unpleasant, the particular sound used just seems to drag though, instead of moving moving moving like kate usually does. "candle in the wind" doesn't seem to grow, build, reach a climax, or go anywhere. *BUT* i onyl listened once and while working so when i go listen to it agian i may come back and beg you to ignore what i've just said. we'll see ;) Happy news: I've put a gif on athos - this is a version of ecto, in 3 colors (black, grey, and heather-ish purple). I tihnk it looks really neat, and I tihnk it'd be easier to make into a T-shirt than the fuzzy grey original. (I also have a version of rearmament in b/w with a touch of aqua. looks kinda neat. perhaps i'll put that up too if anyone's interested?). Tell me what you tihnk of the ecto.pg.gif (pg for purple.grey). If people are intersted, i'll see how much the place down the street woudl charge for Ts. jessica ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 6 Dec 91 03:09:45 EST From: justin@bond.crim.ca (Justin Bur) Subject: Re: wrinkle me too Jessica writes: > "Into the Fire" includes versions of "Sad Clown" (from Touch) > and "Black" areanged and performed somewhat differently. > they say (CBC Session). (musically different). the single also says "produced by Kevin Komoda for CBC-FM's Brave New Waves". BNW is a radio program broadcast across Canada five nights a week (Sunday to Thursday) from Montreal on which all sorts of new and interesting music is played. There's usually an interview, and if the subject is a musician or a group they will usually perform a song or two especially for Brave New Waves. I think Sarah M. was on the program in July, but I don't remember properly. Can't have been much earlier since i was in Europe and i'm pretty sure it wasn't after her concert (12-13 July in Toronto). (Yes, she's done two nationwide tours this year in Canada, in July and in November!) (there are four national radio networks in Canada, btw, two English and two French; they are called CBC Radio (or CBC-AM), CBC Stereo (or CBC-FM), Radio-Canada, and Radio-Canada FM. Outside major cities, most CBC Radio transmitters are on FM so it's not much called CBC-AM any more. CBC = Canadian Broadcasting Corporation; in French, SRC = Societe Radio-Canada.) free-association on another topic of jessica's message: there was a children's book that i read twice, in 1974 and 1975, about a boy and a girl who went to Crete (on vacation?) and somehow found out about the existence of wonderful underwater castles, remnants of ancient Mycenean civilizations probably... there was an old man who told them about these castles and somehow they ended up going scuba-diving to explore and see the marvellous things, but they had an accident and only just barely managed to escape intact. The title might have been Castles Under the Sea, or it might not have; it was probably a Dell Yearling book. And the mention of certain books that i haven't read (such as A Wrinkle in Time - i shall add it to my list of books to read!) make me think of this book that i have not been able to find in sixteen years... justin ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 6 Dec 91 03:18:43 EST From: jessica@cs.rutgers.edu Subject: ps Oh, also! Please, write anything you want, we won't get tired of hearing about it. I don't know about GREAT fuzzy blue drifts, but there are a couple of inches of the fuzzy and fluffy white stuff on the ground, which I prefer to the clear and solid ICE that was covering everything around on Tuesday! Looking forward to a Nor'easter! >there are many many people of all nationalities >who are hostage to the conditions and politics of the middle east I know this is not alt.talk.politics, but I can't help to mention the problem of Cyprus, with lots of hostages kept for 17 years, and refugees. This was an invasion not related to the oil market that went unnoticed by the rest of the world, and is still going on... Yugoslavia is another example of the unsteadiness and turmoil in that part of the world, and being from Greece I hope that awareness on these issues in the USA remains active. I am on the gaffa mailing list and on a couple of occasions caught some mail regarding Happy( probably yours) on that list. This got me mildly interested so I dropped a note to Jessica who was kind enough to give me some further details and also the names of a couple of ectos already on the Happy Mailing list in the UK, who would possibly be in a position to let me listen to something of Happys. Well it just so happened that one of the ectos, Stephen Thomas works in the same building as me and he was able to make me a copy of his Warpaint CD. From then on I am a happy Happy fan. I'm really impressed with the Warpaint album and like every track, so I'm hoping to be able to send to Aural Gratification for the other 4 albums shortly and then I'll be in a position to judge Happy's progress. By the way can I send UK money to that address, since I see you give UK prices on your imformation about Happy ? Being the age that I am I've had quite a few changes in my musical tastes over the years and at the present time, I can honestly say that my taste is pretty widespread. I like anything from classical to Heavy Death Metal with everything in between. I've had a phase of Rock n Roll, one of Country and Western, and more lately Heavy Metal. As regards Vocalists this is a somewhat different matter, since normally I'd rather listen to instrumental albums and I often feel that a good piece of music would be even better without the vocalist, I'm therefore rather fussy when it comes to listening to singers. I can listen to Elton John, Kate Bush, Phil Collins,Jennifer Rush, and a few others, and I am now pleased to say that Happy Rhodes had been added to this list. As regards my birthday , the sign is aquarius and the day was Sunday at about midday. The surname is PARTIS. I'm usually known as"Tel Boy" to my mates although the Boy part is a bit obsolete now. Klaus) Hi , I'd like to add my little bit to your Happy gift tape if i'm not too late, I'll figger out something in the next couple of days but it wont be more than about 4 minutes. I haven't seen anything on the list yet about when to send tapes off to Vickie and what size, so I presume this imformation is still to come and also Vickie's snail mail address. Unfortunately I'm not able to email the rest of europe so any correspondence between us will have to be via the list. At ukc I can only email the US.
