I'm picking my song more from the 'something I would like Happy to hear' category. Given her oft-stated sense of humor, I'm looking for something a little off the wall. "How Sweet to Be an Idiot" fits that bill, and even touches on a minor theme of Happy's, the attraction of not having to worry about normal society. I'm still looking for a better one. By the way, Mitch, love the 'fuzzy blue navel' (though I saw it coming a mile away) idea, though I'll have to pass on trying it out. Has anyone compiled all of Mitch's ideas into Ecto: The Shopping Guide? The gift-giving-holiday-of- your-choice is just around the corner, and you wouldn't want to forget to buy your love Eau du Drears, would you!? Also, the birthday year list is definitely unsorted within years, as mine is before Vickie's. Vickie, thanks for the flame-war/discussion summary. It sounds like a nice one to stay on the fence with. Re World Cafe: While I totally agree with Vickie's Happy point, the original dissenting poster definitely has a point. I remember listening to KROQ in Los Angeles in the late Seventies, still the best radio station that I've ever listened to regularly, a commericial one, too! They rode the crest of the punk/new wave movement with no discernible playlist. Some of the most off-the-wall music I've heard outside of the Dr D show played there. However, when the new wave movement stayed around the fun solidified into a 'format', which they marketed to other stations. The playlist was still worth listening to, but the fun, the spontaneity, and madness were gone. Unfortunately, this seems to happen time after time after time after .... Vickie wrote (completely out of context): I love chains, don't you? Actually, with the discussions about pain, I probably should be more into S&M. :-) :-) "Today is the day" blared the _Fort Collins Coloradoan_. On Sunday, over 10,000 Fort Collins citizens braved a chilly windy day, overcame the Sunday lazies, even passed up a key Bronco game (impressive around here) to welcome back one of their own, ex-hostage CSU Prof Thomas Sutherland. A motorcade accompanied by planes, parachutists, and balloonists carrying messages, and a military overflight carried him through downtown to the CSU Oval, whose stately trees have been decorated by many generations of yellow ribbons, signs of anxiety now turned to joy. After a long lunch break (he and his family had just arrived from Berkeley), they were officially welcomed back in Moby Arena by Gov Roy Romer, Sen Hank Brown, Sen Tim Wirth, Rep Hank Allard, CSU Pres Albert Yates, Mayor Susan Kirkpatrick, student president Tom Meyer, and 10,000 of their closest friends. Tom's arrival in the arena was unheralded, in the midst of a large Scottish pipe band (He was born in Scotland), but the crowd needed no prompting, erupting into wild cheering and applause lasting almost ten minutes, an ovation that would continually erupt throughout the two hour ceremony. Its highlight was Tom's description of his captivity and the crazy thirteen days since his release. He noted that he didn't know about the efforts being made on his behalf, and still is learning the many, many things done in Fort Collins. His daughters who bore the heavy brunt of the media assault over the six and a half years gave a hilarious description telling him what to expect from the media. One of the last items was a song written by a CSU student, capturing the emotion of the scene, the joy of greeting the return of a man "most never knew". Only the obligatory talk by the politicians (with the exception of Hank Brown's) dragged it down at all. It was a very emotional, joyous, moving ceremony. Tom Sutherland is just a name passing through the news (if that) to most of you. However, Tom deserves a short note fleshing out that name. He is one of those rare people who can impress others in a very short time, across any distance, one of those rare people who lights up any room he's in, even a basketball arena with with major politicians and 10,000 people. Students who just had him for one class many years ago talk about how he affected their lives. Key members of the "Friends of Thomas Sutherland Committee" have never met Tom. The quality, courage, and love of his wife and daughters was self- evident. Sen. Hank Brown (the only Republican I've _ever_ voted for national office) grew quite emotional in his praise of the "ladies of the Sutherland clan", describing how they refused to mouth the words demanded by the kidnappers, even though Tom's wife Jean was in Beirut most of the six and a half years. Tom's talk only underscored a man of indominatable spirit, a man who defines indominatable spirit. He is someone special, and Fort Collins gave him the welcome he deserved. (Now if only the media will!) Unbeknowst to us, during the ceremony, it was announced that Joseph Cicippio would be freed, and he was early this (Monday) morning. Alann Steen and Terry Anderson should follow before the end of the year. Doug Burks _O_ dbx@olympic.atmos.colostate.edu |< She really is!! """"""""""""""""" This is the 3rd announcement of an idea which I have now renamed to the "Happy Gift Project", and the main goal is to create a gift for Happy from us Ectophiles. The details: """""""""""" The idea is to assemble a tape with possibly a spoken message from everyone and ONE song she/he would like to dedicate to her. Practically that means everyone sends a tape with her/his message and the song to Vickie (she already volunteered to do it, THANK YOU !!!) who will create a tape with all the songs and messages and will send it to Albany (probably wrapped up in fuzzy blue paper). Every participant will get her/his tape back with a copy of what Happy receives _if_postage_to_send_it_back_is_included_! There are no restrictions about what song to select, except not to take one from Happy (unless it is your own cover of one of her songs). It would be nice to have a variety of music, so I hope not everyone will select one from KaTe. Maybe you have a song where you think Happy should hear it. Vickie suggested to put KaTe's "December Will Be Magic Again" on the tape as the first song (from all of us), since Happy's probably never heard that song, and since it was KaTe who brought us all together. It would be great if we find someone to do an artwork for the cassettes cover? Volunteers? Ideas? Latest status here is that Chris will try to create an 3D picture, based on a sketch from Martin. Also, Kiri offered to draw up some designs and mail them to Vickie. Please don't send any tapes now ! """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" Just write if you would like to join in, and think about which song YOU would like to contribute. If you have a message to H&K but no possibility to put that on the tape (why doesn't my recorder have a microphone or even jack for it?) write it down, and we could ask Vickie or someone else to speak it on the tape for you. If you already know what song you would like to send, let us know the title and its length as well. That way we can make sure we don't have several copies of the same song, and we can find out what tapelength we need. I will post summaries of the entries. There will be one more announcement before it actually starts. I would like to suggest that we try to give the tape to Happy at the end of the year. Could we find a better deadline? To give Vickie enough time to assemble the final tape, we should send our tapes in, about 3-4 weeks before that date (which is very soon). Be prepared to be asked to tape your song and send it out in one or two weeks. I want to point out that I don't want to put a financial burden on Vickie by having to send possibly one or two dozens of tapes back. I am sure you don't want that either. Vickie already has the major work on the project and I am very pleased that she volunteered to handle the tapes. So when you are sending a tape later in the project, please remember to include some $$$ for return postage. We can discuss the details when the project is in a more advanced stage. I was in Tower and I noticed the aforementioned Miranda Sex Garden single and thought, "Gee, Vickie and (Meredith? Court? I don't remember who all! I feel like a bad friend) were talking about them." This is a *great* single. The title track and 3 dance remixes. The three women in the band have stunning voices and it's just *wonderful*! And it was a domestic CD single, too! Jeff |Jeffrey C. This evening I came home, settled down to write a paper, and put _Warpaint_ (the CD copy I've borrowed for use on my show until I get one of my own) in the player. Halfway through "Feed The Fire" the phone rang. It was for me. "Hello, Meredith? This is Kevin Bartlett", at which point I almost wet my pants. I turned BRIGHT red, said, "Oh! Hi! Let me turn _Warpaint_ off for a sec." He chuckled. Talk about timing!!!! I guess I freaked because I was NOT expecting him to ever use the number I sent him in my letter requesting a copy of said CD for WESU, and suggesting trying to set up an interview with Happy next semester. A simple note was all I figured I'd get....goddess, I was climbing the walls the entire time! I figure if it'd been Happy I wouldn't have been able to talk at all, so managing to stumble out some answers and even ask a few questions is pretty impressive... Anyway. This is about as coherent as the conversation. The gist of it was, they're getting copies of _Warpaint_ out to WESU and to me tomorrow, and we talked about possibilities for some sort of interview on WESU when they start out on the road. We have facilities for playing live on the air, since we used to have a live show on every week with local bands, and now we use that studio to do the news and Talk Radio and that sort of thing. The phone coupler hasn't been in operation for two years, and although they've told me it's getting fixed, I'd feel safer setting up something live than arranging a phone interview that can;t happen because of faulty equipment! We also talked about possible venues for Happy in Connecticut. I don't know much about that, but I told Kevin what I do know, and he asked if Wesleyan was a possibility- which it is, if I can get hold of the right people. He said Happy isn't too much into playing the bar scene, but I gathered they'll take what they can get. He said something about not wanting UPenn to be the first stop on the tour- that'd be a bit much. :) He also said they're starting rehearsals this coming weekend, and have yet to find a keyboardist. The bassist spent six months with Robert Fripp and The League of Crafty Guitarists in its first incarnation- that's good stuff, and I was psyched to hear that this guy's been wanting to play with Happy for a while now. It sounds like you'll have some possibility of seeing Happy if you come over in February, Klaus! So anyway- now I have to talk to the station folk and see about live studio possibilities, and also if we could in any way get Happy to play at Wes. As soon as the CD gets into the station I'll make sure it gets into the New Release rack and gets played (Kevin was happy to hear we report to CMJ), and that it remains in the rack into next semester- programming ends next week :(, though people will be in and out during the holidays and January. So, it looks like Happy will be getting some exposure in the Hartford/Springfiedl area- Kevin sounded psyched, and I am, too!!!!! I just had to share this with you all. I'm still on the ceiling that he called me- he thanked me for my support, and I told him I'd do all I could, and to wish Happy all the best. Wow. :) :) :) Sorry if I sound like a teenie-bopper who just got her first autograph, but this whole thing is a lot more real to me now that I may be helping Happy and Co. out. (If anybody knows of possible venues in the Connecticut area, let me know- I'm going to get back to Kevin as soon as I find out what the deal with Wesleyan is, and he'd appreciate other suggestions, too.) *----------------------------------------------* | Meredith Tarr | | *** | | "In a world where carpenters get resurrected,| | anything can happen!" -A.
