Well, I joined ecto after you left... so maybe I should just say welcome. :) Second, I still don't have a copy of BTC. :( Oh well, I'm sure I can survive a little longer without it. My copy of Mazzy Starr's _She Hangs Brightly_ *finally* showed up, and I am truly in awe of it. You were right woj, it's even better than _So Tonight That I Might See_ (which I love). THE OLIVE-LOAF VIGILANTE asked: > Anybody catch Tori on "Later"? I was quite disappointed. I wasn't as disappointed as I was worried I might be. :) I stayed up so I could tape her without Kinnear's opening attempt at comedy (and all of the commercials) and it came out be be about 14 minutes of Tori. Just a little more than we would have gotten in a normal Leno/Conan/Letterman segment. It certainly would have been nice to see her on the old version of _Later_. The interview was rather pointless (though I agree that her evasion of the dating question was interesting) but since she usually just does a song when she's on the late night shows it was still something of a treat. Alex Gibbs wrote: > Actually, I was a bit dissapointed Sarah's performance > wasn't as good as her concert here. Not complaining, just wish the > exposure for her had been better. I agree... I was hoping for better. Not that she was bad, I just was hoping that she'd be *amazing* and get herself a lot of new fans. Would anyone care to comment on Milla's Lifebeat performance? To me she looked so out of place. All the other performers had clothing that looked like it was "stage clothing", but Milla and her band looked like they had just wandered in off of the street. Also, when I had seen Milla before it had been on small stages... I thought they looked kind of lost on that relatively large stage. Maybe it was just me... :) I'm not complaining, I loved seeing her, but I'm worried about what kind of impression she left with people who aren't huge Milla fans. :) The shots of the nykelharpa were nice... I don't see any need to drag Milla into the discussion of BTC's merits, especially not with a statement like that. THE OLIVE-LOAF VIGILANTE replied: > mjm, you can't be serious. _The Divine Comedy_ is the album Happy should've > made??? If she had produced something > on a level of _TDC_, it would have been a tragic step backward in the wrong > direction. I haven't heard all of BTC yet (just the few cuts Happy did at Joyous Lake), but I think I'll have to support this anyway. One of the things I love about _The Divine Comedy_ is the bright future it promises for Milla. It's an amazing start to what I hope will be a very long career. I don't agree that the songs Happy wrote when she was young are "orders of magnitude better" than what Milla has written, but I do agree that an album like tDC would be a step back at this point in Happy's career. Happy likes Milla's music a lot, but I don't think she likes it that much. :) > Finally, I'd like to publicly announce that Tamar is waffling over whether > or not she should go see Sarah McLachlan in NYC in a few weeks. I don't mean to diss Milla at all, but I thought that her usually beautiful deep, rich voice sounded a little weak and shrill. She seemed to go up in tone too, like the notes were a little higher than they should have been... really noticable in the a-capella part of Charlie in the middle of the song. I think she was probably nervous. I mean, how many times do you think she's performed on TV so far in her career (and I don't mean the Blue Lagoon!). Anyways, that's just my opinion. If you haven't seen the show yet, and are planning on doing so, then you might want to know that the times I have seen it have all started a couple minutes before the hour. I have seen two different profiles of WOMAD on "VH1 Inside Music", featuring Peter Gabriel and others. I'm surprised there are some good things about VH1, it's just too bad there are so many more things that are bad about it that you have to suffer through to perhaps glimpse the good things at some unknown time. In other words, it's not usually worth it. /-\ |_ |= >< Alex R. I've noticed German in particular conventionally puts book titles upside-down from the English convention -- English orients the top of the text to the right, while German puts it to the left. ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 30 Aug 94 01:55:54 PDT From: stevev@greylady.uoregon.edu (Steve VanDevender) Subject: Vancouver and album reviews I'm too tired and it's too late at night for me to tell the whole story of the Vancouver gathering, but I'll at least tease you with a few of the details. Brian and Mindy: It was fun watching you fall in love with Whidbey Island, and to eat too much ice cream. Good luck in escaping from the hot flat lands to the bumpy moist ones. Doug: I'll let you tell everyone about the lasting memento of our visit, and thank you also for the ride to Vancouver and the Ecto hostel hospitality. Everyone at the Vancouver gathering: Of course, no one was quite what I expected from just seeing e-mail, but it was fun to visit Canada again and to see some real live Ectophiles in person. By the way, Michael, the key to the Ne[ai]l{e}s is: Neil: Ecto-gathering host with the British accent Neile: Seattle Ecto-Goddess Neal: the guy from San Diego It's convenient that they all spell their names differently; you'd certainly never confuse them in real life but it would be easy in writing if it weren't for that. I listened to BtC in Neil's apartment when the gathering moved there; the real standout for me was "Down, Down" but I'll definitely be nagging the local record stores to buy it ASAP. Since I fall into the "MS-DOS is the Doom Operating System" camp, I was a little dismayed to see the "C:\" on the cover but I'll forgive it. I'm hoping that eventually we can organize a CD buy-off between Doug Burks and woj, both of whom have phenomenal CD-buying abilities. Doug and I visited a pretty cool little Vancouver record store (Zulu Records) and while I was straining to get myself to buy five whole CDs Doug plunked down ten. What'd I get? Well, in rough order of finding: Jane Siberry, _No Borders Here_ (I wanted the Canadian _The Walking_, but all they had was NBH and WIWAB) (Note: anyone who can point me to a way to get the Canadian pressing of _The Walking_ will get major Ecto Bonus Points from me) Throwing Muses, _House Tornado_: Sounds good so far; I knew I needed more of their stuff. Haven't entirely digested it, though, because of: Danielle Dax, _Dark Adapted Eye_: I can't believe I took so long to get this given the other raves I've seen about it. Boy oh boy oh boy. You were right, Doug, I do love it. Nomeansno, _Wrong_: A sentimental favorite, not really Ecto material (they're a BC-based punk band, more melodic than noisy), mood music for a tough few months in my life. Victoria Williams, _Happy Come Home_: After seeing reports of the relative scarcity of her albums, I was surprised to see this store carrying HCH and _Swing the Statue_. I like it so far, although it's not quite fitting my current mood. I'll keep it, since I know I'll want to listen to it at certain times. ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 30 Aug 94 6:30:27 EDT From: WretchAwry Subject: I'm proud of myself This post has absolutely nothing to do with Happy, music, or any of the recent topics. It's strictly a "MeMeMe" post, and the topic is serious and disturbing, so you might want to bail now. It's good news, but I'm spoilering it for the brief background wrt a rape I talk about. I know I've got some magic buried deep in my heart yeah (Tori Amos) Because of postings I sent to Ecto a couple of years ago (they were deleted from the archives at my request), some of you already know about my cousin, but for newer Ectophiles, here's just a very quick background... When I was 14 an older cousin (BT) and a friend of his kidnapped, drugged and raped me. I never told anyone about it, then last year I found out that he was in prison for sexually abusing his 13 year old daughter. He was sentenced to at least 3 years in prison (I don't know the exact "3 to ?" term he was given) and isn't it *just* so indicitave of how close-mouthed my family is that I didn't even find out the bastard was in prison and why until he'd been in there for nearly his whole term? (A rant about *that* could take up an entire post!) Anyway, as soon as I did find out, I called the DA's office in the county he was convicted in and was routed to the Victim-Witness program. The woman I talked to was very familar with BT's case and had helped his daughter through the trial process. I told her my story and she added my name to a confidential file to be notified when BT came up for parole. I was notified and went through a panic period a few weeks ago, because I had the choice of writing a letter to the parole board telling them what BT had done to me to show that this man has been abusing young girls as long ago as 1970, or keeping quiet, the way I *always* had. It was scary (especially not knowing if BT would find out that I was finally talking) but I decided to go ahead and write the letter. It was such a hard letter to write. I was in Kansas City when I wrote it (we had gone down there to see Tori and Sarah) and I've been jumpy about it ever since. Well, I think it worked! Yay!! YAY!! I got a call from the lady at the Victim-Witness Program today telling me that my cousin has been *DENIED PAROLE* for another year! His next parole hearing comes up in Sept. 1995. She said that she got the official minutes of the meeting, and the protests lodged are *not* included in them, which means that since BT and his lawyer get the same copy, my name never came up so I can't be "blamed" for keeping him in prison. I asked if she knew for sure that my letter was read, and she said almost certainly. At least 3 protests against his parole were lodged, one from her office, one from BT's ex-wife (the mother of the daughter he abused) and mine, so we all worked together to keep the scum behind bars. Even not knowing if my letter made as much of an impact on the parole board as the other two protests, I still feel very satisfied and certain that it probably did make an impression. I'm not totally worthy of respect, since I haven't exactly made the sort of stand that I wish I could. I haven't told *anybody* in my family or his what I did, for fear that it would get back to him in prison. Maybe sometime I'll at least tell my dad or BT's older sister, who knows what he did to me (and also thinks he's scum) and who was the one who told me why BT was in prison, but for now I'm satisfied with what I've done. While I wasn't able to share my fears about writing the letter in Ecto (I wish I had), I'm glad I can tell the good outcome now. Hooray for the parole board! I got lots of answers (30!) from people who get ecto as single mail, so now is the time for those who get the list in digest format to send me their answers. If you've missed the initial message I can mail out the questions to you on request. .. Alright, so the BtC cover doesn't look that good, but it has one big advantage: there's a lot of white space to get it signed! I'm currently trying to decide which cover of Dark Orange to send to the band to get it signed but their covers are so colourful and elaborate that they just aren't suitable for that purpose. ... Although I had my copy of BtC quite early, I still haven't made up my mind how much I really like it. What I do like are the instrumental outro's of "Omar" and especially "Glory". Those last 1:25 minutes of "Glory" are my most played parts of the album. I tell my CD player to repeat them over and over again. In fact I will declare "Glory" my favourite song of the album for now. .... Unfortunately the BtC booklet has a massive number of typos. I already thought to send corrections to AG to make sure that they won't show up in future reprints. ..... This weekend featured a fantastic ToriFest in Darmstadt. Thanks Ilka!!! As most of the attendees were Ectophiles as well, you won't be surprised to hear that I was "forced" to play BtC right after joining the group. ...... Thanks to all those who responded to my quest for the ISBN number of the Laurie Anderson book. Now that I have it, it shouldn't be difficult to get it, although it might take a while. Kilpatrick discusses the reappearance of archaic and obscure word usages. Among others, he notes the number of times the verb "to happy" has been observed of late, after an absence of 400-odd years. All this comes at a good time for us, inasmuch as not only the arrival of _BTC_, but also Vickie's good news (over and above her return, _per se_, to this list), have happied all of us. Coincidentally, Vickie relates her successful attempt to convert her BTC jewel box from the German to the American format for spinal print: > [...] Viola! Now it fits in with the others. Coincidentally again, Kilpatrick wrote a column not long ago, in which he discusses the mangling of the French language in English usage. "Viola," he said, was one of the most common linguistic gaffes in this vein. (The first time I ever saw that word used in that manner was on the inlay card for a promo edition of Capitol's reissue of Mazzy Star's first album, after it had acquired same from the late, great Rough Trade label. I quoted the entire passage in the writeup I did on Mazzy Star for Neile the Homophone's guide to great music.) Unlike Steve, I wouldn't say I'm dismayed at the "C:" graphic on the BTC spine, but it has occurred to me that it's a little unrealistic, given that compact disks are meant to be portable, whereas hard drives are not. It would have better reflected this reality if AG's designers had started the album pathname with an "A:"; perhaps they can do this on the cassette version, which is argu- ably more portable (at least when being listened to) than the CD :-).
