After work yesterday (Monday) I stopped by my local independent record store (University Music in Storrs, CT) to see if they had a copy of Mazzy Star's _She Hangs Brightly_, and to have them order one if they didn't. As I walked down the isle toward the Ms I happened to glance at the Happy Rhodes section... and it was packed with CDs! Well, maybe packed is too strong a word since there were only 6 CDs there. :) Anyway, when I rushed over and started going through them I discovered that every CD except Volume I was there! Up until this point I had been a rather casual Happy fan. I bought Equipoise a few days after joining ecto, mainly because Vickie told me that Happy would probably be at the Milla show I was planning to attend in Woodstock and I thought it would be nice to have actually heard a few songs. :) I liked the album a lot, but I didn't *love* it. That's not unusual for me... it took me a couple of months to fall in love with Sarah's music, and about a month and a half for Milla. Because I'm planning on going to see Happy this Thursday I've been listening to Equipoise at least once a day for the past week... and every time I listened to it I liked it a little more. So I gave in to my desires and bought the 5 Happy CDs I didn't have. So far I've listened to Rhodesongs, Warpaint, and Ecto, and I absolutely *love* them (especially Ecto)! I'm looking forward to listening to Rearmament and Volume II tomorrow... and I'm pretty sure I'll love them as well. :) I'll order Volume I from AG when I send my pre-order for BTC in. My only problem now is that I've been saying that my Trinity of Musical Goddesses was Tori, Sarah, and Milla... and now I have 4 musical goddesses. Well, I guess that's not really much of a problem. :) BTW... Happy Birthday Happy!!! Jansen/Barbieri/Karn - Beginning To Melt A compilation album of recent works by Steve Jansen, Richard Barbieri and Mick Karn. Contains three songs with the soon getting famous guitar player David Torn ;-) Kristen Vigard - Kristen Vigard Don't know what she wants. The songs are varying from blues to jazz to folk. Nice but not remarkable. It Bites - Eat Me In St. Louis Melodic heavy art rock (don't know how to describe the music). Does anyone know what happened to It Bites? Wang Chung - The Warmer Side Of Cool Brilliant, complex pop rock, like Mr. Mister. The Motels - All Four One Band of singer Martha Davis. Wave-pop from the early 80's. Julia Fordham - Swept Unlike the majority of you, I like this one better than Porcelain. Toni Childs - The Woman'S Boat Brilliant but heavy stuff. Don't listen to it very often. Sam Phillips - Cruel Inventions Totally blown away by Trippin' Over Gravity and Privat Storm. Hector Zazou - Sahara Blue Wonderful "world music" with David Sylvian, R. Sakamoto a.o. Erk... sorry people! I guess I should have realised that... so much for me being helpful and pointing out where the post was :) Anyways, I'm going to pop a question on the end so that this isn't a complete waste :) I saw a box recently from Oingo Boingo, which appeared to be called "Boi-ngo" and consisted of five records (vinyl EPs I presumed from the size of the box) with two songs on each one. I've gone back and read the posts about Oingo-Boingo, but couldn't get too much idea of what they sound like... (I'd never heard of them that I can recall until the recent thread) The box was pretty cheap, but I can't afford to spend money on things I mightn't like, unfortunately :( Does anyone know what I'm talking of, and if it's a worthwhile buy? Subject: ectopics hello all... a couple quick thank you's before i get to the replies. first, i'd like to thank all of you who wished me a happy birthday. it was, indeed, a happy one. as i've mentioned to a few folks, it was spent sleeping in, eating mongolian for lunch, taking a train to new haven, joining meredith and tamar and graham (someone you don't know) for an enjoyable evening viewing some of connecticut's local musical talent and going to sleep again. i wish more of my days were like that. sigh. second, i'd like to thank whomever it was who took it upon themself to forward my comments on alt.music.ecto onto vickie. i don't care who you were and i don't want to know either but i am bothered that you did so. granted, i don't have a problem with vickie seeing that post. however, if i had wanted vickie to read them, i would have sent them directly to her. i was responding to someone's query about how ecto should respond to the creation of alt.music.ecto. since vickie is no longer a member of this mailing list, that discussion doesn't concern her no matter how much of a driving force behind the creation of ecto she was. valerie asks about katell keineg: >Has anyone heard of her? yup. i know a little about her. she is irish and grew up in dublin and that's about all i know. i've two recordings with her on it. the first is a compilation called _straight outta ireland_, a collection of recent musicians and performers from ireland, on which she has a single song. the second is a dub of a radio performance she did sometime last year on wfmu. it's not the greatest of recordings but it is really nice none- theless. lots of tunes and lots of blather between her and the host. i imagine that if i listened to this recently, i'd know more about her. >The CD says the street date is August 16th. yay! i've been waiting for something from her to be released. >Oh, and her name's pronounced CAT-tell KAY-neck. i thought it was /KUH-tell KIH-nick/. least that's i how i remember it pronouced during that radio broadcast. (standard disclaimer applies :) jeffy asks about magnapop: >A) Magnapop, a band apparently fronted by Michael Stipe's sister. hmmm. not that i recall. far as i know, michael has two sisters. one is lynda stipe, whose band hetch hetchy is known and loved by many here. the other's name i do not know but i thought she was a librarian or something equally quiet. magnapop is fronted by linda hopper (who along with lynda stipe was in a band called oh ok! with matthew sweet back when he lived in athens all those years ago). if lynda stipe is now involved with magnapop, that'd be an interesting development. >Your basic crunchy pseudo-alternative-pop stuff. yeah, that's a good way to describe it. there was an album released either last year or the year before which i liked but not enough to buy (i was able to preview it at wesu when meth was still deejaying there). i'd imagine that this would be more of the same. i'm pretty sure that they have older material around but i've never heard it. Tim Cook sez about jan johnston: >Q raves about her and describes her as a cross between Cyndi Lauper >and Victoria Williams (interesting combo). hmmm. i read tim's note last week and this comparison has stuck itself in my mind. it resurfaced on monday when, while roaming a sam goody's (i was just looking!), i heard something on the in-store stereo that sounded like this. when i asked, it turned out to be danielle brisboise (whose name i just probably butchered, but hey). she's another actor turned music star ("if milla can do it, why can't i?"). if memory serves, she was on "all in the family" but don't quote me on that. i had seen a promo of this disc kicking around the cutout bins but didn't feel like springing $7 on that whim. after hearing the album in sam goody's, i'm glad i didn't. it's not bad - pretty standard pop stuff is how i'd describe it - but it doesn't appeal much to me. i'd imagine that some ectophiles would go for danielle brisboise though. and adds about tish hinojosa: >She reminds me a lot of Iris DeMent which means she's probably a bit too >"country" for some tastes. the big difference between tish and iris is that tish is coming from a mexican background. that hispanic factor puts a whole different spin on her sound. despite this statement, i'll go ahead and call tish an authentic nancy griffith with said hispanic spin. they're all in the same realm but given the choice, i'd opt for tish over either iris or nancy anyday. Dirk buys a lot of discs: >Kristen Vigard - Kristen Vigard > Don't know what she wants. The songs are varying from blues to jazz > to folk. Nice but not remarkable. yeah, agreed. this was another album to entice me from the cutout bin that i was glad not to have bought when i finally got a chance to hear it. it's okay but it's not that striking. >Sam Phillips - Cruel Inventions > Totally blown away by Trippin' Over Gravity and Privat Storm. i still haven't gotten _martinis and bikinis_ (it's on the list! honest!) but i did find this one for a few dollars used. wow! wow! wow! after hearing this, it's a wonder i didn't rush out and buy her new one. i was real bummed that i missed her tour. those two songs that dirk singled out are the same two that did me in. :) Ethan quotes allan balliett about the y kant tori read release: >It is not clear currently if this is a WEA project or independent, it's absolutely a bootleg. it's on the "independent" (nice euphenism, that) label pacific records. the first issue by said label, in fact. i've been assured that it's a brilliant reproduction as well though i have not seen nor heard this yet. i think one may surface this week at one of the local record shops that carries this kind of thing. will keep y'all posted (i imagine that news of this is a-buzzin' over on rdt but i haven't read that in over three months (though the digest rot in my mailbox) so i wouldn't know). reviews next time. honest. sleep is more important right now. +woj ======================================================================== From: kmorrey@casbah.acns.nwu.edu (Kathleen Morrey) Subject: Lazy Me... How is everybody?? Aaaaaanyway, did anyone happen to catch both David Wilcox on Jay Leno and Peter Gabriel on David Letterman?? They may not be true ecto fodder, but someone did alert me to their appearances in an 'ecto tv' post (Hi John W!). They both gave good performances... PG did "Red Rain", and DW did some song I don't know the name of off his new one _Big_Horizon_. PG actually talked to Dave about having a new live album coming out (I think called Secret World or something like that??), and he told a funny story about getting in trouble with UK cops on accident... something like that. Oh, and since I'm new, could some nice soul dig up the latest FAQ and send it to me too?? Thanks! Will be out of town for a week, so everyone have fun! --Dawn @8-) ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 10 Aug 1994 10:50:24 -0600 (MDT) From: "Scott D. Bigelow" Subject: REQ: chords/music for various Ecto-artists Hello, I am new to this group. You might remember my two useless "subscribe" messages from yesterday. (Thank you, to those that straightened me out on that.) Maybe you could be of help. I haven't found the music I'm looking for on alt.guitar.tab or nevada. But here's the artists I'm trying to find music for: Sarah McLachlan (esp. "Mary" from _Fumbling..._) Milla (esp. "Ruby Lane" from her debut) Kristin Hersh Frente The Sundays (esp. "Here's Where the Story Ends" from _Reading..) If anyone's figured out how to play any of the songs by these artists, or knows where to look for chords or guitar tab for them, it would be a huge help. Thanks. Scott p.s. I already have Bizarre Love Triangle, Labour of Love, Beestung, and Your Ghost (downloaded from nevada.edu) ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr. There is an INDEX file explaining what is where. Feel free to send me things you'd like to have added. -- jessica (jessica@ns1.rutgers.edu)
