WEA, a unit of Time Warner Inc., became the second major distributor to reverse its position on halting the practice of sharing ad costs with Wherehouse Entertainment and other retailers after the stores began selling used CDs. CEMA Distribution, the wholesaler for EMI Music, announced on Aug. 26 that it had resumed cooperative ads with retailers selling used CDs, which generally sound as good as new CDs but sell for about half the price. Distributors have claimed that selling used CDs cuts their profits and the royalties due to the artists. Wherehouse filed a federal suit in Los Angeles earlier this summer accusing WEA, CEMA, Sony Music Corp. and UNI Distribution Corp. of violating antitrust laws by refusing to fund cooperative ads. Wherehouse, a 339-store chain based in Torrance, Calif., said it plans to drop CEMA was dropped from the suit and said that it hopes to begin discussions soon with WEA about a similar move. ``Everyone wins with WEA's decision,'' a Wherehouse spokesman said. ``We get to keep selling used CDs and promote WEA artists in time for the holiday shopping season.'' WEA said the controversy and litigation generated by the policy had been detrimental to the ``cooperative spirit'' between the company and its dealers. WEA said that while it was resuming ad support to retail outlets that sell used CDs, it will monitor how this money is spent to verify that none of it is used for advertising that promotes used CDs. ``WEA remains deeply concerned that the sale of WEA-distributed-label used CDs is detrimental to WEA, to its customers, to artists and ultimately to the consumer,'' it said in a statement. ``WEA is also confident that the policy it is now withdrawing is lawful.'' ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 01 Sep 1993 02:21:03 +1000 (AEST) From: anthony@xymox.apana.org.au (Anthony Horan) Subject: Re: Not Champagne Jam, 8/18/93 In apana.lists.rec.happy-rhodes, article <01H2DEBV4ATG8Y6L8W@delphi.com>, you wrote: > In which we fill in for WESU's most popular rap show and hope to survive the > experience... I thought I'd quickly "review" it, though I've only had a couple of listens... The title is "Into The Labyrinth", the booklet is the usual lavish 4AD production (with *lyrics*!!) but is not designed by V23, and the front cover is a photo of a pair of hands around a wrist, by Japanese photographer Touhami Ennadre. Once again this is the typical self-contained DCD production, having been recorded in an Irish church by Brendan Perry and mixed by him as well, not to mention co-production (with Lisa Gerrard) and co-design (with Chris Bigg). The recording is flawless and contains several Bass Notes Of Doom (TM) - but the biggest surprise to me was the content. Opening track "Yulunga (Spirit Dance)" recalles "Spleen And Ideal" with its monk-in-a-church vocal and cinematic strings. Eerie and excellent. And then at about the 2 minute mark, the voice becomes a middle-eastern wail, and we're transported from the remote monastery to an Eastern city as more and more eastern instruments join in. This theme continues onward to the next track, which comes complete with sitar and Indian wind instruments, but turns out to be a more conventional DCD song (as opposed to a DCD "piece"), with Brendan on vocals. Track 3, "The Wind That Shakes The Barley" (written by a Dr Robert Dwyer Joyce and arranged in traditional form by DCD) is a voice-only (Lisa) Irish lament that transports the hapless listener back to, well, Ireland, especially considering the convincing Irish accent that Lisa adopts for the occasion. :-) Then "The Carnival Is Over", another Perry vocal, glistens its shimmering and wonderful way into your speakers/headphones, bells and all. Literally. It sounds in parts like a Ryuchi Sakamoto tribute... :) The brief "Ariadne" out-Enya's Enya with Lisa's sublime lyricless vocal before we are back firmly in Eastern territory on "Saldek" Have these guys been holidaying with Single Gun Theory or something? More sitar on the next track as well, "Towards The Within", but this one adds an interesting spin to the traditional Eastern backing, by supplementing it with doom-laden bass chords (and DCD are the doom-laden bass chord experts, after all... :-) and assorted other counter-melodies. By the time this 7 minute track hits the tabla solo, though, the whole Eastern thing is starting to wear a little thin... lucky they added a few Gaelic pipes and some tambourines to complete the thing with an Irish jig... :) "Tell Me About The Forest" is another Perry vocal back in the more conventional DCD style. Is it just me, or do some of the songs Brendan Perry sings lead vocal on sound something like Nick Cave with an orchestra? :) At any rate, it's straightforward but nice. Then comes "The Spider's Stratagem" and yes, more tablas; though this time, the rhythmic focus is more on a sequenced bass and drum track, as well as Lisa Gerrard's expectedly Eastern-tinged chant. Exercising her right to surprise the listener, Lisa slips into Diamanda Galas mode for a second toward the end... Then there's "Emmeleia", an apparently Latin accapella vocal (I'm not multi-lingual, so don't shoot me if I've wrongly pegged your language as Latin!) which runs a brief two minutes, and then the closing track appears, "How Fortunate The Man With None", which uses words by Bertolt Brecht as the lyric. Another Perry vocal, and a very "Spleen And Ideal" track again - until you get to the glistening strings, bells, and Ryuchi-a-like instruments that populate its cinematic heart. In summary, then: Wow, what a record. They don't make 'em like this any more. In fact they never did. This is a genre unique to Dead Can Dance, and this is the best Dead Can Dance album in a long time. It's going to take patience to work its full magic, but its sheer diversity works in its favour this time, unlike some of their other works. It's not on a par with the early albums in terms of gothic atmosphere, but there's some of that here and then more. I want to go to Montsalvat (a medaeival artists retreat about 40Km from Melbourne) right now just so I can go sit in the Great Hall, light some candles, and play this album! The music of Dead Can Dance isn't for everyone, and isn't for playing at lively parties. Usually. Though I have done it. :) But those who know this band's work will find much to surprise them here, and much indeed to reward them. In fact, many songs on Happy's early albums are stylistically similar to what DCD does (particularly the more keyboard-oriented tracks). Those who don't find those records impenetrable will have no problem with "Into The Labyrinth". It's also recommended for fans of film soundtracks, fans of gothic horror movies, fans of Ryuchi Sakamoto when he's not making bland electro-pop, and monks. Trivia note: Lisa Gerrard still lives in Melbourne, from whence she comes. See, this city is good for something... :-) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anthony Horan, Melbourne Australia - anthony@xymox.apana.org.au "I kind of feel like I'm Metallica..." - Tori Amos on the perils of long tours, November 1992 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ======================================================================== Date: 31 Aug 93 14:01:08 EDT From: Mike Mendelson Subject: square dance >so is square dance good, then? i've been wanting to see it just so i can >say i've seen every winona movie ever made, but i didn't know if it was at >all worth seeing otherwise Yes, it is definitely worth renting. As are all Wynona Ryder films worth seeing. Though I can't speak for the new one where she competes with Pfeiffer and looks very Dracula-ish. (Actually, I thought Dracula was her least-worthwhile role, but then I slept thru most of the film...) Today was a fall-like day in Chicago (at least in the AM) and that yearly autumn craving I get for The Sensual World crept into my system again. It is *amazing* how the weather puts me in the mood for that album. I'm still not sure if it's music or the time of release, but I think it's the music. For those tennis fans (of which I am a big one), CBS is showing Late Night US Open right after Letterman every day this week. They had our favorite tennis hero (??) Monica on last night... she was speaking to reporters, I guess, and *man* she looked like she was on the verge of tears. I was very sad to see her in that state. She said the last time she tried her swing, her range of motion was restricted and it hurt like hell (paraphrase). She was hopeful to get back on the court in time to defend her Australian title in January. That would be really impressive. They also talked about the increased security at the US open. It's kind of sinister, but it seems that Seles' absence is doing wonders for Graf's game. (figures) Now correct me if I'm wrong but didn't the guy who stabbed Seles in Hamburg say he did it because he was a big Graf fan? The lead singer, Annisette, has what is perhaps the most outstanding voice in Danish popular music: Massively powerful and yet dreamily caressing at times. The first of the two tracks I've selected, "Jeg har droemt om min elskede" ("I've Dreamt of My Beloved"), is based on a poem by Nazim Hikmet, a Turkish dissident. The second ("The Path in the Mountain") is based on a Kurdish partisan song: Savage Rose's music is always political. Hanne Boel ---------- This is a more recent artist, she has released three solo albums (I believe she started in one of the main Danish bands, but I'm not sure). She has a powerful blues voice, a little reminiscent of Tina Turner at her best. "Leaders of the World" is a (relatively) quiet song in the protest genre, "Son of a Preacher Man" is straight blues/rock. Lotte Roemer ------------ Another of the "rougher" Danish artists, with a definite rock voice. "Farlig fradag" ("Dangerous Friday") is a fairly high-powered rock song with calypso influences, while "Arbejdsloes" ("Unemployed") demonstrates that she's also capable of quiet ballads/political songs. Lis Soerensen ------------- I first heard of Lis Soerensen when she worked with the male singer/songwriter Sebastian, and she is capable of some impressive vocal feats. The two selected songs are perhaps not her best, but does give some impression of her voice, in both a quiet song and a rock/pop song (both songs, "Gypsy Blood" and "If You Want", are her own). Sanne Salomensen ---------------- This a very good singer, unfortunately I haven't got her best albums. She has often worked with Anne Linnet, one of our best songwriter/ musicians (but not a terribly good singer ;-)). "Ingen ka' forhindre" ("Nobody Can Prevent") demonstrates her voice in a rock/pop song. "Dialog" ("Dialogue"), an early song I believe, has an extra bonus: The other singer (left channel, deeper voice) is Daimi (there are no credits in the CD booklet, but I'm willing to swear! :-)): I'd love to have some of her music but she is hard to find (she has mostly sung jazz and, I think, children's songs). Daimi's voice is very special, soulful but with a kind of tongue-in-cheek overtone. In fact, "Dialog" (a political song) is altogether tongue-in-cheek... Lasse & Matilde --------------- This is a male/female duet, one of the few Danish folk groups with interesting vocals. I've picked one of the tracks where Matilde sings the lead. Her voice is not exactly pretty, but it has a lot of personality. The lyrics of the selected song, "Det skoenneste jeg ved" ("The Most Beautiful I Know"), are from a poem by the Danish author Tove Ditlevsen. Eva Dahlgren ------------ Born 1960, solo debut 1978. Has done 13 records. My favourite. It was the last album that made me realise that Swedish artists could be very good too. Marie Bergman ------------- Born 1950. Was 1969 a member of the folk pop-group Family Four. Solo debut 1974. Has done 12 records. Began to play electrical guitar 1982. Started the bands Marie Bergman Band and after that Magic Body Band. The style on the different records are varied. Irma Schultz ------------ Born 1965. Irma Schultz is an artist name but the name on the records is only Irma. Has been a member of various obscure Swedish groups. Has made 2 solo records. Susanne Alfvengren ------------------ Born 1959. Solo debut 1984 and has made 7 records. Uses dialect when she sings. Tekla ----- New artist. As Susanne Alfvengren she sings using a dialect. She has probably only made one record. Marie Fredriksson ----------------- Born 1958. Has been a member of the groups Strul, Mammas Barn, Gyllene Tider and Roxette. Has made 4 solo record and the last "Efter Stormen" got very favourable reviews and is also very good. Wilma ----- Wilma consists of two women: Anna Kuoppam"aki (vocals, guitar) and Sanna (backup vocals, keyboards) and three men: Hande (guitar), Mara (bass) and Rene (drums). All songs and lyrics are written by Anna Kuoppam"aki. Albums: "P"oly"a kuusta" (1992) and "Claudius" (1993). Katariina Honkanen ------------------ No info available... V"arttin"a ---------- V"arttin"a sings contemporary Finnish folk music. All four singers are female. They are accompanied with traditional finnish instruments like 'kantele'. The group toured with WOMAD in Europe last year. Albums: "Musta lindu" (1989), "Oi dai" (1991) and a new one from 1993. Kirsten Braaten Berg --------------------- "Sagn" ("Myth") by Arild Andersen (from "Sagn", Kirkelig Kulturverksted, FXCD 100) was composed for the festival Vossajazz in 1990 by Arild Andersen, with a lot of input in the form of old verses and "stev", a special form of song from southern Norway. Kirsten Braaten Berg has won the national contest in this form of traditional song many times. She has participated on many traditional folk music records, and has won the 'Spellemann' award, Norway's Grammy. Kari Bremnes ------------ Renowned for her good lyrics, this song (from "Spor" ("Tracks") Kirkelig Kulturverksted, FXCD 110) is an exception, being written in English by Lars Bremnes, her brother. Along with Ola Bremnes, the siblings form a very versatile trio, doing cabarets, poem readings, plays etc, although they are journalists by trade. Kari does a very good job as a portrait interviewer in Aftenposten, Norway's biggest non-tabloid. Mari Boine ---------- Mari Boine is a Lapp, a minority population in Northern Scandinavia with their own language, traditions and religion. They find they have much in common with the American natives. Mari is one of the most important proponents for the recognition of the worth of their culture. She made a name for herself with the album "Gula Gula". Since then she has divorced and taken back her Lappish surname. Cuvges vuovttat, duodalas calbmi ("Light in your hair, Serious Eye") is from "Goaskinviellja" ("Eagle brother"), Lean, MCD 62. Radka Toneff ------------ One of Norway's greatest jazz singers. She came to Norway as a child, the daughter of Bulgarian refugees. Both her parents were musicians, her father a folk singer, her mother a pianist. She studied music at Musikk-konservatoriet, but made great efforts to sing in her own powerful way. She once said: "When I sing, I do everything wrong - and that's the way I want it to be." She died all too early. The chosen song "Lonely Woman" is from "Live in Hamburg", Odin Records, NJ 4044-2. Bel Canto --------- It can be pop, it can be world music, it can be house but it is always bel canto :-) The song is "A shoulder to the wheel" from "Birds of Passage", Crammed Discs, 9031-76488-2. Agnes Buen Garnaas ------------------ Agnes and her brother Knut are among the top performers when it comes to traditional folk music. For instance, Agnes version of "Draumkvedet" (a *long* ballad from the Middle Age, the oldest known Norwegian piece of music) is regarded as the reference version, and she won a "Spellemann" for it. "Psalm" is from "Twelve moons" by Jan Garbarek Group, ECM Records, ECM 1500. Anja Garbarek ------------- One of 1992's most successful debutants, Anja Garbarek writes biting lyrics of the pains of growing up, firmly in the tradition of 20 year old female singers, in other words :-) Her lyrics aren't marred by cliches, though, and the music holds very high quality. Her father Jan Garbarek has had a small hand in the arrangements. "Vingene mine" ("My wings") is from "Velkommen inn" ("Welcome inside"), BMG Ariola, PS 75300. Lynni Treekrem -------------- Another of the successful 1992 debutants. Lynni was already known to many from quite a few country projects, but her solo album contains more than "just country". "Langt vekk hjemmefra" ("Long away from home") from "Ut i vind" (Out into the wind), Columbia, 468675 2. Dollie de Luxe -------------- Benedicte Adrian and Ingrid Bjoernov, the two girls behind the now depreciated band name "Dollie de Luxe", have worked for many years on their operamusical "Which Witch". Last autumn it was eventually put on stage in West End, but wasn't the success they had hoped for and it only lasted 3 months or so. It cannot have been the music that is at fault, however. The story behind the musical in brief: Maria and the bishop fall in love, the bishop's sister conspire to make the village believe she is a witch, and Maria is burnt on the pyre. This song is "2,665,866,746,664 little devils" from "The Operamusical Which Witch", original London cast, NotaBene Records, NBCD 015. SKRUK ----- SKRUK stands for "Sunnmoere KRistne UngdomsKor", that is "Sunnmoere Christian Youth Choir". They have worked with a variety of styles and people, they have for instance one album where they are collaborating with Altiplano, a Peruvian group playing all kinds of flutes. Here, they have taken a song by Aage Samuelsen, a Norwegian preacher who was often ridiculed for his naive lyrics and arrangements, and turned it into something quite special. "Oh Jesus, you who fill all in everyone" from "Landskap av stemmer" ("Landscape of voices"), Kirkelig Kulturverksted, FXCD 114. Enjoy! The gimmick is that information is given in the form of an answer, and the contestant must phrase the response in the form of the question. For instance, the stimulus "The fuzzy blue mailing list" would require the response "What is ecto?" The show's unique selling proposition is that the topics engaged are reputed to be on a higher intellectual plane than the average game show. (Believe it or not, I don't remember whether the post he was inquiring about made it to the list.) I was just about to go on about how unsurprisingly, an American manufacturer of baked goods had come out with their own expression of the scone concept, and that they actually came closer to English muffins, albeit denser, than to biscuits. Fortunately, it occurred to me not a minute ago that the Yank knock- off was actually of crumpets, not scones. I have, however, had Starbucks Coffee's knockoff of scones, and they are harder than biscuits and are availab- le with chocolate chips.
