Thanks. I haven't seen "Sex, Lies & Videotape" and the Tom Selleck thing doesn't sound familiar. Btw, thanks for adjusting my rabbit ears (and to Steve Lusky too!) How are you preparing for Jeopardy? (Besides reading Ecto, so you'll know what "tachyons" mean :-)) Is Jeopardy talk completely confusing everyone outside the USA? Is it or a similar show received elsewhere in the world? (Besides reading Ecto, so you'll > know what "tachyons" mean :-)) Actually, I already knew what tachyons were (see my email address). Then there's the fundamental quantum of kitsch, the tackyon. :) But seriously, a friend of mine lent me a book written by two former Jeopardy champions which, apart from a "what to expect" introduction, is just a crash course in, well, almost everything.... science, Shakespeare, literature, history, etc. It's presented in a format similar to the Guinness Book of World Records, ie. "Biggest Archipelago", "Only Song To Hit #1 by the same artist two different times" (do you know which one? Hint: the years it hit #1 were 1960 and 1962). There's a complete list of world capitals (pre-Commonwealth of Independent States), a list of important authors and their important books, and so on. I've been playing College Bowl for a number of years, so I've got a pretty big storehouse of info already, but, as the saying goes, the more you know, the more you realize how little you know. The big thing I have to practice is my reflexes.. waiting for Alex to finish reading the question and timing my buzzer-ringing just right... when you come down to it, Jeopardy is basically a reflex race. If I get a chance, I'll try to mention the "Happy Rhodes fan club" on air (if I said "Hi to the folks on Ecto", almost nobody would know what I was talking about). Can't promise anything, though. I might be way too nervous to remember. That was the way I felt, but since it's set in stone, all we can do is wait and see how she treats Frannie. Remember, at the beginning of the book Frannie is just a small-town, confused teenager not too far removed from some of the characters Molly Ringwald herself has played. As the story continues, Franny, like all the characters, changes. I have to have faith in Molly because she is a good actress. > > Rob Lowe as Nick Andros > WHAT??? :) My thoughts too, until I started thinking about it. > > Diane Lane as Julie Lawry > That's more like it. Mmmm, I'd tend to blame the films rather than Rob himself. When he's in a *good* movie, he's terrific. _About Last Night_ is my second favorite film he's done. My favorite is _Square Dance_, where he played a mentally disabled teenager. The film also starred Jason Robards Jr., Jane Alexander and Winona Ryder. Most of the other film he's been in have been true turkeys. > > _The Stand_ is my favorite Stephen King book, and I've been waiting for > > this movie for a long, long time. It *better* be good! > > I wonder if they're filming the long version of the book... :) Nah, the mini-series is only 8 hours. The Unedited and Complete version would be 18 :-). Btw, I'm glad that I read the Unedited version because it filled in some perplexing holes, but whenever I want to read The Stand for pure pleasure (and it is, because I feel I know the characters so well) I pull out the original. > Incidentally, I'm in two minds about watching it when it makes the inevitable > trek to edited-down home video over here, like all ABC mini-series seem to. > The book played out like a movie in my mind, so rich in imagery it was almost > like a Clive Barker novel... :-) I don't know if I need it illustrated for > me, particularly if the result is going to turn out like the truly awful TV > production of "It". I know what you mean, and it's even harder to guess how it will turn out since so many (uh, most) of the movies made from SK novels are trash. (I wouldn't deny that some of the books themselves are trash too, but *not* all of them!) I hope that since it's taken *so* long for this movie to be realized, and since it's SK's own favorite, and since it *is* so full of imagery and rich characters, that everyone involved will treat it with the care it deserves. We shall see. (And the American Stand fans will surely let the list know what we think). Seems the federation's old nemesis, the Bjorg, are back, but this time they're _different_! Unlike the staid Icelandic songstresses of old, they have conjured up real emotions and feelings. This is because of their new producers, Lor and Data(a.k.a "The Sons of Soong"; watch for their own album soon to be released!). Um, now that that's done, and while in Sci-Fi mode, does anyone here know when MST3K changes hosts? Promises to be an interesting show or two (but they all are!) Still no messages from ecto on deepspace. My shortwave lists are there, but ecto has disappeared! Hopefully Jessica will have gotten my message and get me going again. Glad I get the digest here on Genie, though it's quiet over the weekend. Unfortunately the reception was really poor for me -- even though I wrapped tin foil all around the headphones and found the perfect position for good reception, but I got a little uncomfortable standing on my head with the walkman at the bottom of my feet. ;-) I tried to stand the static for about 10 min. after they played it because I wanted to hear what the DJ had to say (if anything) about it. Oh well. I'll try again from home to get better reception.
