Heidi Berry. Heidi Berry. God, I love each and every one of you on this > list. Honestly. We love you too Anthony! > Heidi Berry. This album is simply *wonderful*. Very English, as Vickie > pointed out, and very, very beautiful. Mmmmmmmm yes! I'm so glad you found it and like it so much. > Sorry for rambling, everyone, I felt like a bit of an information purge, > and I know you're good listeners! :-) Don't apologise (that's my territory, even though I *know* I don't have to) because, yes, Ectophiles are very good listeners. I *still* haven't seen either of the Bjork videos :-(. I hope she does enough to release a video compilation. (Then again, The Sugarcubes don't even have one...that I know about). Maybe it's a good thing that I haven't been keeping up with MTV or other video shows, because I also haven't seen (or heard at all) the Willie/Sinead thing. Just the concept makes me cringe. I *like* Sinead, it's just that I can't imagine that combination, singing that song. I'd better make sure I have the Peter/Kate version close at hand, just in case I accidentally hear/see the Willie/Sinead version. I'll need a strong does of reality. > ======================================================================== Dave, who's super (though he's not quite sure) wants to know: > Who is this Victoria Williams person? I went to my local CD Superstore and > they didn't have her listed on their computer. How many albums does she have > out, and would a KaTe and Tori fan like myself like her music? Also, are these > albums imports or just obscure? Victoria is a singer/songwriter/musician from Louisiana, now living in Los Angeles. She has 2 albums, and both are pretty obscure. You might have some luck scouring the used/cut out bins for the CD of "Swing the Statue" (her second album, which was released on Rough Trade) and either the LP or cassette of her first album "Happy Come Home" (which was never released on CD) which is on Geffen Records. Mammoth Records have the rights to both albums but have no plans at the moment to re-release them (though woj disagrees with that. Whatever, I just want them out and available. I *especially* want "Happy Come Home" on CD, because it's my favorite of the two.) Last year, Victoria was diagnosed as having multiple sclerosis, and lots of her musician friends got together in Los Angeles and New York and put on benefit concerts to help her with her medical expenses, since, like most non-superstar musicians, she has no medical insurance. These concerts led to the creation of an album called "Sweet Relief" featuring all kinds of musicians covering Victoria's songs. Pearl Jam, Maria McKee, Michelle Shocked, Lou Reed, Lucinda Williams and many others donated their time and talent for the project. The proceeds from the album will go to continue to help Victoria, and to set up the Sweet Relief Musician's Trust Fund, to help other musicans without medical insurance who get sick or have an accident. Victoria is *nothing* like Kate/Happy/Tori/Jane, so be forewarned. I love her, but I know that everyone won't. She's been described as "Dolly Parton on good acid" (by a friend of mine :-)) and she has a truly odd (and, methinks, wonderful) voice. Her music could be described as "fractured folk/cajun/gospel" and her lyrics are pure, downhome storytelling magic. She's an American national treasure, no doubt in my mind, and I wish that Smithsonian Folkways had picked her up instead of Mammoth. > ======================================================================== SteveF>>> Thanks for relaying Happy's message Vickie! "Troy" "I Want Your Hands On Me", etc. I really like this album too, especially "Jerusalem" and I like Sinead now. I used to be a Sinead-basher, but I started liking her when she tore up that photo of the Pope. Now, the more I learn about her the more I like her. Wait...come to think of it...I started liking her earlier than that SNL move. I actually started liking her when she refused to play (in New Jersey?) if the American national anthem was played before the concert. I thought both actions were very gutsy and meaningful. I also admire her for coming out wrt being abused as a child and the fact that she's still trying to heal from it. I understand her far better now than I used to. > Subject: Sandy Denny > Anyway, the point of all this is that if _Rendezvous_ and/or _Waltz_ are > the only Sandy Denny someone's ever heard, s/he would have a much > different view of her work than someone who has had the opportunity to > hear the other work. Vickie ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 24 Aug 1993 22:19:19 -0700 (PDT) From: Ectophiles Guide Subject: Ectophiles Guide Report #1 Hello, everyone. Here is the Ectophiles Guide Report as of today. I'm breaking it up into four messages to keep it simple. This is the first. The second is the list of people already included in the guide. The third is the list of people we don't have entries for, but who have been mentioned on ecto and/or on a list Vickie once posted to rec.music.gaffa. The fourth is the format and guidelines we've been using (not essential for making a contribution!). For those of you new to ecto, the Ectophiles Guide is a project a group of us started to gather together opinions about the many, many artists mentioned on ecto. The opinions are being compiled by the ever-capable ectophiles guide crew: Michael Blackmore, Brian Bloom, Jens Brage, Jim Gurley, Anthony Kosky, and Alan Moorse (thanks, guys!). It will be edited by Mary Lou Rowe and myself, then placed in the archives (with more assistance from Jens Brage). It will then be available for browsing in the archives, and by email to this address. The idea is, that sometime you're reading ecto and notice a mention of, say, Happy Rhodes. You've never heard anything by her and you're curious about her. You could then either go browsing in the archives or email ethelred@u.washington.edu and ask for the Happy Rhodes entry. If there is any demand, we will probably create a paper version of it, as well. Well, that's the rundown. If you have any questions, please mail me at this address. --Neile ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 24 Aug 1993 22:33:57 -0700 (PDT) From: Ectophiles Guide Subject: Ectophiles Guide Report #2 Okay, here is the list of artists that we have received entries on for the guide. We would really like to include as many of these artists as we can. In the next (and final, aren't you glad?) report, I will include the format we've been using for the entries. While using the format isn't essential, it is helpful to us. HOWEVER, if that's going to make it harder for you to say something about these artists, please just send us whatever you want to say. We long for, hope for, live for, your opinions. And remember, different folks have different opinions, some like apples some like inions (meaning that every opinion is valuable).
