Hiya everyone, hope you had a fun and fuzzy weekend... Just a couple of points of Ecto-interest... 1. I just saw the video for Bjork's "Human Behaviour" (thank zarquon for "Rage", our very own alternative MTV!). Wow, what a clip. It was also the first time I'd heard the album version of the song; the single I was supplied with contained an oblique 12 minute remix that was nothing much. I didn't for a second think I could imagine a pairing between Soul 2 Soul and Bjork, but it all seems so logical now - although Nellee Hooper did work with Public Image Ltd on a track on their "9" album. Hmm. Anyway, the video is amazing. Bjork in a forest a very artificial forest containing a large dancing bear, plastic trees, and a strange log cabin with a giant moth flying around a solitary light globe. Bjork is transported to and from the cabin by means of electronic imaging, is nearly run over by a giant car but employs a trick a hedgehog uses earlier in the clip and ducks under it, is immersed in a moon-washed lake before finding herself on the moon hammering a Soviet flag into the moonscape with a big smile, and then undergoing re-entry complete with glowing helmet and trademark Bjork smile. This is one of the few people for whom smiling should be mandatory at all times. Sigh. Anyway, this is one of the strangest yet most clever and amusing clips I've seen all year. Whoever directed this, I want whatever it was he was on when he made it. :-) Australian readers (or am I talking to myself) the Bjork album is being released through Polydor, not Mushroom - they appear to have lost the One Little Indian license, but no-one knows for sure. Maybe Bjork is licensing her material seperately. 2. I also just saw something truly horrid. Willie Nelson and Sinead O'Connor doing a version of Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush's "Don't Give Up" (I believe it's part of a charity compilation called "Peace Together" that Island have put out; I should get a copy tomorrow, so I'll report on it later). This is not only the worst record released all year, it's HERESY! :-) Willie removes every last bit of emotional weight from Gabriel's lyrics during his parts, replacing them with his trademark man-on-mogadon drawl and sounding so bored he could put a masochist at a piercing convention to sleep. Sinead, meanwhile, tackles Kate's vocal part by coming up with a dreadful whine that's totally and utterly off key and equally devoid of emotion. Whose ridiculous idea WAS this pairing, anyway? Peter Gabriel's probably already installing a spit in his grave in preparation for rotating in it. Ugh. Avoid at all costs, and don't say I didn't warn you. And I don't care if it *is* for charity. It's no excuse! Didn't "We Are The World" prove that? :) 3. Heidi Berry. Heidi Berry. God, I love each and every one of you on this list. Honestly. Before I came here I'd never heard of Jane Siberry or Tribe, and now I have three superb and soaringly sublime CDs to cherish and (in the case of of the two Tribe albums) play at ridiculous volumes. And now this. Heidi Berry. This album is simply *wonderful*. Very English, as Vickie pointed out, and very, very beautiful. It's hard to compare it with anything, but at a stretch I'd have to say that instrumentally it reminds me at times of David Sylvian's "Gone To Earth" album, and sometimes of Talk Talk's later work. The single, "The Moon And The Sun" is no indication of what's on the album; it contains the only hint of folksy leanings on the whole disc. "Little Fox" is the second track in and already it lavishes (is that a word?) you with strings and gentle piano, with a melody that could break your heart if you're not careful. Later in the album, "Follow" has the capacity to do the same. Production is by Hugh Jones, and is flawless; design is by V23 who only make one mistake; that of covering Heidi's eyes with writing! There's nothing like this album around. It's sublime. My only worry is how to convey this to the readers of the magazine I write for when I give this album 9.5 out of 10 in my review, indie-cred readership that they are... :-) 4. I have in front of me "Last Splash" by The Breeders; I know I promised a review of this the other week, but the advance tape I had sounded so awful that I decided to postpone until a CD turned up, which it now has. Anyone seen the "Cannonball" video yet? It's co-directed by Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon, who obviously both understands the song and has a terrific sense of humour... :) I should warn, though, that quick listens to the album didn't sound too promising, with the exception of the rather stormingly good "Cannonball"; but I'm not about to be hasty. I thought Tribe's "Sleeper" was "alright" on first listen, before it progressed to deity status on around the 5th listen. "Abort", by the way, is a far easier album to get into. Which brings me to... 5. Tribe's "Sleeper" will be released real soon now in Australia, according to Janet at Mushroom, who I spoke to today. There will not be a single released here, but promo CDs of "Red Rover" will be distributed to radio and if they can find a video, so will that. Err, to television, in that instance. Oh, you get the idea. :) Anyway, she told me that "Abort", while it had done nothing here in Australia (I never heard about its release, and they're supposed to tell me everything :-) did quite alright in New Zealand, and the single "Joyride" actually charted (sorry if this is old news, Tribophiles). This time around Tribe will get a bigger push as Janet, who worked for the New Zealand distributors for Mushroom at the time of "Abort"'s release, is something of a Tribe fan herself. I've made a mental note to hit the Mushroom video archives with a blank VHS tape to see what Tribe artifacts are hiding there... :) 6. No word from the very same Janet about Australian distribution for Happy, because I forgot to ask her (!). Better that I'm not too pushy anyway. Last I heard, wheels were in motion, and I suggested a while back to Susanne that she should try and find out if Mushroom had a representative at the New Music Seminar in New York, as that would be the perfect place to plug. Well, apparently, they did have someone there, so I wonder what happened... Sorry for rambling, everyone, I felt like a bit of an information purge, and I know you're good listeners! :-) Anthony ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anthony Horan, Melbourne Australia - anthony@xymox.apana.org.au "I kind of feel like I'm Metallica..." - Tori Amos on the perils of long tours, November 1992 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ======================================================================== From: Tim Cook Date: Tue, 24 Aug 93 14:12:10 BST Subject: Newsletters > Geoff Parks (who received an AG newsletter a couple of days ago despite > being previously unaware of their existence - not that he's complaining!) Yesterday was moving day and on the same morning I got two pieces of Happy-related post: one at my new address and one at the old. At my old address I got the Aural Gratification newsletter. This not only put me straight on the matter of the new CD's title, but I think Happy's drawing at the bottom shows she rather enjoyed getting the kite! When BT get around to installing the 'phone line into my new house I shall have to give Aural Gratification a ring to ask them to consider two dollars of the money I sent them for my recent order as my subscription to the mailing list. On arrival at my new abode I found a package from Colorado waiting for me. The HBP tapes from Doug! I was amazed to get them so soon. What a star! I haven't had a chance to listen to them yet, my stereo system presently resides in a large pile of cardboard boxes back at the old flat, but I'm really looking forward to it. I've avoided looking at the lists of contents on the cassette inserts and the separate sheet from The Management so as to maximise the surprise, as you might say. I took a dub of it with me to Greece, which in a stroke of brilliance had Morphine's 'Good' on the flip side (which is now available on Rykodisc anywhere Cds are sold, go and BUY IT now), and it was constantly in my walkman. In fact it still is :) RhodeSongs... sounds like YeSongs although I don't remember if it was written this way. And there still is an unreleased track on HR5. Track 6.
