Phew! The album has been pushed back. What a relief. I though it was due 9/14, and assumed that the single was already out, and that MTV was playing the video (MTV Europe that is) and so between the 14th and the 18th I tried to watch as much MTV as possible but was frustrated by not seeing it. Well, at least I am now familiar with the European hits. The prize for most inane song of the year goes to U96 for the song whose lyrics are: 'I am here and you are here and we will set the night in motion'. Nothing I saw this year impressed me. It sounds exactly like what Taste of Chicago might be like if it were well done (at least to my way of thinking), as opposed to the status quo in which its most profound effect is to slow traffic markedly for a couple of weeks, to leave a clear field for this hot, crowded and over- priced showcase for food that often isn't really like what the participating restaurants sell at their own digs the rest of the year. I'd better Too *BORING*? This was one of the most funny and wonderful stories you told so far :-) Uli wrote: >See? German 'Meer' is Englih 'sea', German 'See' is English 'lake'. Well... German 'der See' means 'lake', but 'die See' means 'sea'. Now, let me explain something that always leads to misunderstandings. Being a musician myself, I sometimes tend to criticize other people's music. That's a (bad) habit of many musicians that I know, and of myself. It often happens when I'm listening to local amateur bands: my fellows are dancing and calling to me: "Hey, they are great, aren't they?" and I reply: "Well, not bad, but the guitar is out of tune, the drummer can't hold the beat, and the singer has no dynamic control." :-) Then they scowl at me and they don't understand my opinion and I don't understand why they like the music and then I'm asking myself: "Why can't you listen to the music without analysing it? Take it as it is." In my pre-musician years I listened a lot to new wave and punk stuff. I was a big Chameleons fan, for instance. When I started playing in a band I got acquainted with many other musicians and I learned, that, if you want to make your own music, you have to analyse the music you like, to find out, why you like it. One of the guys led me to music that I didn't like before, because it was too perfect and polished (Toto, Mr Mister, Little Feet, Joni Mitchell, etc.). Everytime we were listening to some albums he grabbed at me: "Have you heard this drum break, now pay attention to the guitar-riff, wow, what a bass-line, and this quirky groove..." and so on. When I've learned how perfect music can be, and when I listened to the Chameleons again, I thought "Ouch, what a wrong singing, and this blurred guitar sound... How could I like this before?" Later, I realized, that music has to do with feeling and not with technique and that it's important to express one's *feelings* through the music and not one's technical skills. I got more and more bored by these perfect albums and now I'm listening to the older stuff again. I really like Happy's music and I admire the way she's making it, her independence, the whole concept, etc. and I know that it's important to encourage her. On the other hand and IMHO it's not a big help for an artist if her/his fans only respectfully repeat how wonderful and perfect s/he is. Our band has often been criticized: "your songs are too long and not varied enough". At first we thought "Hey, what do they mean?" but we realized that they were right and that it really must be boring for the listener. We wouldn't have changed our songs if everyone had told us how perfect we are, just to encourage us. And this is why I sometimes feel the need to critizise Happy. Not, because I want to run the music down or to say that I know it all, but because I want her to think about it. If she says "No, I'm pleased with my music, I don't want to change it" then it's absolutely OK, it's HER music. Finally, it's interesting IMO to think about how a song *could be*, if...she had added a distorted guitar, or if she had used real drums. Phew, this was long, but it has to be said. I just wanted to let you know the reason why I criticized Happy's music: not, because I know it all, but because it's a habit and I think it could be helpful and interesting, albeit misunderstood by some of you. Pleeeeease, excuse me :-) I will try to be more reserved (those, who know me personally, call me reserved, but you only know me through my writing. I should pay more attention). Vickie, have you EVER thought of writing books? You surely are more > than able to! Thanks for this nice story, Ah well, there was actually a thread about this sometime back. I don't consider myself a writer, and I'd be too terrified to actually try to be serious about it. Whenever the thought crosses by mind I cure myself by thinking of walking into a large bookstore or library and think of all the books written by people who actually know what they're doing. Lots of Ectophiles said wonderful things to me during that last thread, and I still have those letters/posts. But realistically, I don't have the imagination anymore to write a novel, and people far more qualified than I am can write non-fiction. I guess it (the thought of writing a book) just doesn't interest me enough, and I'm content to read books that others write. And besides, all I ever write about in Ecto is myself, or things that I've heard elsewhere. It's nice that Ectophiles like (or at least, put up with) the "myself" posts, but that stuff is not book material. I see the humor in my situation...someone who has -zero- self-esteem writing long stories about myself. I don't know why I do it, or how those things get past the censor in my head. I'm glad they do occasionally though, because that censor keeps me from writing all kinds of things I might want to write. (Yeah, it's one of my little demons, and I hate it!) Thank you though, for the compliment. I know it's maddening to compliment someone who then turns around and twists it into a "thanks, but..." diatribe but I do appreciate it when anyone says that they like my stories, because it does help me to smack that particular demon around :-). *HUG* Vickie ======================================================================== Date: Sat, 21 Aug 93 5:38:07 EDT From: WretchAwry Subject: Re: kateless Neal sez: > Vickie: I accidently saw "House of Cards" last night, and really enjoyed > it. Once, when my then-girlfriend (the same one who got hooked on IRC, and I should mention realized what was going on and fixed it, and has had a boyfriend for the past year and a half) and I were going back to the apartment from a movie at College Park, we saw lots of flashes of light ahead.
