Copperman Subject: hungering for falafels hey Jessica, love that signature. It makes a great unified quote - "falafel, falafel, falafel, BaBaGanough - It is this that brings us together", but that's probably what you intended anyway. Is the infamous falafel song available to the ecto public somewhere? neal ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 13 Aug 93 14:57:36 PDT From: tsai@ikos.com (Finney T. Tsai) Subject: Christine's picture(uuencode format) O well, it's Friday afternoon again. Just thought some would have problems decoding Christine's BinHex formatted picture. I converted it to uuencode format and included it in the mail. As the standard procedure, you can cut the mailhead, pipe the text body to uudecode, and get the GIF file. It's not a big file, about 18KB only. Christine looks intelligent and sweet. Nice smile! :) -finney ===============(the picture begins here)===================== begin 644 christine_waite.gif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ew sysadmins have problems with an icb >client - it doesn't *do* much, doesn't take up CPU or memory.. Ooooh boy I gotta comment on this one. When my NeXT was on the Internet (lewhoosh.umd.edu), it was the IRC server for the Univ. of MD College Park Campus, and, well, a large chunk of the East Coast (we even got a few Australian connections, which puzzled everyone involved). I had to get special permission to run IRC like that, because it was UMCP's network that was being used (it wasn't a problem; UMCP's a backbone site and the network load of IRC is negligible). As for the load on my system, that was negligible too once I got 20M of memory. The real problem with IRC is the ... how to put it... Well, let's just say that my then-girlfriend was complaining of being bored, so I showed her IRC. Then she got romantically involved with someone from Israel , then Chicago, then a few other places too. It's not something magical about IRC, it's just that IRC made it so easy to have relatively anonymous communication that some folks would spent 12+ hours a day on it. *MY* only real problem with IRC is some gooberheads kept trying to break in to my NeXT, or would access the IRC daemon from annex boxes, which I, being a auditing stickler, did not like. [due to other complications, I shut down the IRC server on lewhoosh] > jessica What does this have to do with anything? Nothing, probably. Just had to respond... and, FWIW, you won't catch me on an IRC client EVER AGAIN. :-) Mike ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 13 Aug 93 18:53:23 EDT From: WretchAwry Subject: Re: Christine's picture(uuencode format) > O well, it's Friday afternoon again. > Just thought some would have problems decoding > Christine's BinHex formatted picture. MyChris and Christo headed out for the airport at 8:30 this morning. I was too far gone (new pills, groggy) to go to the airport with them, but I was able to wake up long enough to say good bye to Christo and give him a big hug. It's been a great week and I couldn't have asked for a nicer house guest. His brain must surely be boggled by all the audio and video I've heaped upon him, but I don't think he minded *too* much :-). He must be so tired, because last night, after he got back from his Eau Clair visit, I kept throwing things at him (figuratively, of course) such as the Jane Siberry documentary and the Victoria Williams documentary, and frantically dubbing things for him to take with him. He only got a few hours sleep before having to leave. I'll let Christo (or Meredith) tell you about the mixup at the Newark airport, when the Ecto Support System kicked into high gear. It was a wonderful thing to behold (and be part of). After a bit of a panic, Christo is now with Christine Waite and are going to see Suddenly Tammy tonight. In the next week he'll also be spending time with woj & Greg, and Bob Lovejoy (and maybe brni!) before heading off to Holland for a year, during which time he'll get to meet lots of European Ectophiles (and maybe some of our English and Scottish Ectofriends too), and I think this is all so exciting! Christopher Boek (pronounced "book") is living proof that the Ecto Hostel, Support & Friends Network is working! Christo has been taking photos all along the way, and hopefully some of them can get scanned in as gifs. He had some of them developed in Eau Clair, and he gave me a few. I now have photos of Neal Copperman (hi!), Ken Hoyme (hi!) and Jeanne Schreiter (hi!) plus a couple from the Fest last Saturday. One of them is of Christo, me, Mike Mendelson, his friend Holly, my friend Charley, and Harvo the cat. The other is of Christo, me, Chip Lueck, Shelby Berkowitz, and Dave Datta. That one is such a hoot! We were all trying to make balloon animals and most ended up with surreal whatchimacallits instead and some of them are in that photo. Christo's hat took the prize as the creation with the most "whatizit?" quotient. I don't have any way to scan in these photos at the moment, but I do hope they can get in the Ecto archives soon. Speaking of, I downloaded the kite gifs and couldn't get them to uudecode. I'll see if Chris can get them to work when he awakes from his nap. I can't wait to see them! Later... Vickie ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 13 Aug 93 21:04:02 EDT From: WretchAwry Subject: Re: monsters > Well, hello. She has half of herself that she veiws as very beautiful and > presious (and is the hight pitched voice on the album) and the other side of > herself is scary. It is hatred and pain and anger. This is the lower pitched > voice on the albums. Very well put! My only disagreement is that I see the "Beauty" side as not being Happy herself, but Happy the way "society" says she should be. To me, "Beauty" comes from the song "Play the Game" ("I've been influenced by society to paint my face and hate my body") and the "Beast" comes from the song "Cohabitants" ("I am here to drive you to the border of insanity and take notes"). Both are a part of Happy, yet neither are *truly* Happy. The lyrics to "I Say" tell us that we can never really know Happy. She's a complex person. Her lyrics reflect that, and so do her album covers. > The covers are easily understood once the album is listened to. Agreed! And though I join in the frustration of the covers possibly being misunderstood by the casual browser, and possibly affecting sales, ultimately I agree with Aaron and Juha. We have to let Happy be herself, do it her own way. She knows what she wants, she knows what she doesn't want, and we have to cruise at *her* speed, no matter how frustrating it might be. (And believe me, I've been waiting since 1988 for her to get the recognition she deserves, so I *know* frustration. However, a little over 2 years ago, just before _Warpaint_ was released, only a handful of people on the net had heard of her and had bought her cassettes, the first 4 albums weren't on CD and Happy had said that they never would be released on CD, the only stores that carried her albums were in Albany, NY and Kansas City, MO, the only regular airplay she was getting was on my show, and perhaps RPI's station and KFJC once in a while, Ecto didn't exist, and *that* was the most frustrating time for me. Considering all the wonderful things that have happened in the last 2 years, I'm happy!) Vickie ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 13 Aug 1993 23:19:01 -0400 (EDT) From: Suspended In Duct Tape Subject: Re: The Ecto Support System Hi! Well, Vickie brought it up, so are y'all ready for this one? Late this afternoon I got a call at work from Chris Boek, who was at the Newark Airport, and had been for an hour and a half at that point, but had seen no sign of Christine Waite, who was supposed to pick him up. He had lost her phone numbers, and the only number he could find that was easy for him to call was my 800 number (toll free) at work. He wondered if I had her numbers? Not on me, but I figured I could rustle them up somehow, so I told him to call me back in 15 minutes and got to work. Not only is Christine not listed in Information, but she's not in the Ecto File, as I discovered when I called my roommate and gave her step- by-step instructions on how to boot up my computer and call up the database. I left a message for footah and woj, wondering if they happened to have her number, and hoped they would get home soon. Meanwhile, Christo got hold of Vickie and got Christine's number (I have since determined that the home number Vickie has is her old one- but at this point that doesn't really matter...), and called her, but she was neither at home nor at work. He called me back at the same time as woj called in answer to my message- good thing my office phone has two lines! I kept poor woj on hold as I got Christo's latest story about not being able to reach Christine, and I came up with a contingency plan whereby if he didn't meet up with her in an hour he would take an airport shuttle to New Haven and we'd figure things out from there. Then my other line started beeping, so I put Christo on hold and went to see what woj wanted- he was wondering if I knew where in the airport Chris was, since Christine had called him from the airport to see if he had Chris' flight number and airline, which she didn't. I told him to hold on, and asked Chris where he was- Delta baggage claim. I passed this on to woj, who said he had a pay phone number for Christine at the airport to call her back at, but he didn't think he could get through, since you can rarely call into New Jersey pay phones, so I should tell Chris to have Christine paged across terminals and tell her where he was that way. woj signed off to try to reach Christine, and I went back to line #2 and explained all this to Christo. He then said he would call Vickie back (did I mention she had tried to call me in the midst of all this, but since I only have a two-line phone nobody could get the message through to me?) to let her know what was going on, then he would call me at home in an hour to give me the scoop too. The contingency plan of his coming to New Haven if he still couldn't find Christine was still in effect. Five minutes later, Vickie called to say that she had heard from Chris, and he and Christine had met up and everything was fine. I called woj and let him know, and the five of us breathed a collective sigh of relief. (If you thought this description was confusing, you should have been there!) My co-workers were wondering what the hell was going on, since they were fielding the calls for me and watching me bounce around my office from one phone line to another like a Wall Street broker in a rally. It was rather amusing, in retrospect. The moral of this story is: Never lose a phone number. But if you do, someone will be able to get it for you, even if you have to span two time zones to do it. ;> Meredith meth@delphi.com ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 13 Aug 93 23:33:48 EDT From: WretchAwry Subject: Re: The Ecto Support System > Hi! > > Well, Vickie brought it up, so are y'all ready for this one? I had called his home and work, and if Christine and Christo hadn't hooked up when they did, Bob would have driven from Philly to Newark to get Christo. I'd left a message with Bob's son, and when I called him back to tell him that everything was ok, he had just gotten home and hadn't gotten the message yet. I'm glad I caught him before he did get it, and headed off to Newark. Pats on the back, all around...for letting a bewildered Australian know that he's got *lots* of friends! What a great show! Set list, in no particular order ('cept for the encore set which _is_ in order) was: Will She Just Fall Down (WH) Coming Up Close (WH) (Believed You Were) Lucky (EDN) The Other End (of the Telescope) (EDN) I Should Have Known (Whatever) Fifty Years After the Fair (Whatever) Could've Been Anyone (Whatever) Put Me On Top (Whatever) Stupid Thing (Whatever) Say Anything (Whatever) Way Back When (Whatever) Cheese and Onions (cover of a Ruttles song) Encores: 4th of July (Whatever) I've Had It (Whatever) 'J' is for Jules (EDN) Voices Carry (VC) (VC = Voices Carry, WH = Welcome Home, EDN = Everything's Different Now) I can't for the life of me figure out what the first song was. It was something I'm real familiar with, but I just don't remember. Grrr. I think I've remembered everything else, though. The concert last about 80 minutes. Aimee is a dynamo on stage, groovin' with her bass, dancing all over the place, and generally being an amazingly charismatic performer. She was also *extremely* talkative. Someone asked if she was from B'more. She responded that no, she's not, she's from Richmond and lives in Boston. *But*, her brother, Frank Mann, is a newscaster in Baltimore and he was in the audience. This is apparently the same Frank Mann who did the cartoons in the EDN liner notes. Several times Aimee took requests and made a show of, "This is really rusty, we haven't played it for a year" so if you're going to see her, be ready to scream for something you really want to hear. The 3-man band was great. One drummer, a lead guitarist (mostly electric), a bassist/keyboardist/12-string rhythm, and then Aimee switched between 6-string acoustic, 6-string electric, and a bass. This is a Don't Miss Show. Beth has instructed me to note that she seconds this recommendation wholeheartedly. Mike, ya should have been there. Susan--how was the acoustic show this afternoon? Thought you guys could: A: Drive him down to Cherry Hill... B: Put him on a train to Philadelphia... or C: I'll drive up to pick him up... on Wednesday evening. Let me know your plans! Anthony Kosky, brni and I will meet him over the next two days, and I will drive him to the airport on Saturday. Anthony K., please contact me next week to arrange a get-together!
