I don't have the CD but I've got a neighbour with the tape. Also I noticed Barenaked Ladies weren't on the list. Is everybody sick of hearing them already? Are they even popular outside of Canada? I could also contribute a bit harder edged stuff, Skinny Puppy and NoMeansNo, and some others. I will go home and check over my records and CD's (and my roomies--he's got a lot of good Canadian music.) Also, Neile, could I possibly suggest a different track for Bruce Cockburn? Or is it too late? There's nothing wrong with Rocket Launcher, but he's got *SO* many better ones, and that's probably the one that most people are most likely to have heard already. Other than that it looks like a most excellent selection! Tim ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 11 Aug 1993 15:18:04 CDT From: Subject: Don't know much about history and other stories The other night I was looking at the "This Day in History" section in the newspaper, and noticed that Singapore became independent on the date of Happy's birth, a/k/a 8/9/65. Having slept through the 8/9/93 edition of _World News Now_, I may never know whether anything else noteworthy coincided with the other two historical events. Oh well :-). mjm mjms: >So there is still ZERO airplay in Chicago, except for >Mapes, right? In the best case, this could change in the not too distant future. When Stuart Rosenberg at WBEZ emailed me that Happy's music sounded interesting, on the basis of the FAQ I sent him, I wrote back that _Rhodes Songs_ would be out at midmonth, and arranged for the dubbing project to fix him up with a Happy sampler. We shall see what transpires. Yesterday, _All Things Considered_ had an underwriting credit for WIWaB. For some unknown reason, it made me think of the episode of _Star Trek: The Next Generation_ in which Picard is waxing rhapsodic to Worf, Data and O'Brien about the joys of building ships in bottles. Getting no response of agreement, he wonders out loud, rather incredulously, if any of them had ever done it when they were boys; whereupon Worf replies, imperiously, "I did not play with toys, " after which Data states, rather tentatively, "I was never a boy." Makes one wonder about my thought processes, no? :-) On the other hand, there were all those times in graduate school when, in conversations with students in later cohorts who happened to be chronologically older than me, I would preface my remarks with "when I was your age...." :-) Personal to Tim: should you, indeed, visit Iceland, you should give us a full report on the state of TV news there. Already the stuff of legend among affi- cianados of _World News Now_ is the time that show ran a segment from Icelandic TV, ostensibly a report on the celebration of the Summer Solstice, when it remains light well into the graveyard shift. They reported on a panoply of other items, the high point being a lengthy story on (as best I can remember it) the slashing and burning of some kind of mundane vegetation, but absolutely nothing on either the summer solstice or its celebration. The anchors blamed it on the production staff's failure to take another look at the tape, which had been sitting on the shelf for some time, before putting it on the air. Maybe I'll move there. I think so. But, then, you can find lots of good bands in many good sized cities. To go through a list of all bands to look out for, if you're in the Boston area, would be too long.. but, here are some. Understand, that I like all types of music, so there'll probably not be much coherency here. ;-) Also, some of these bands are relatively new, but ones that I feel have potential, so I go to see them to support them. o Mary Lou Lord folk; she's put out a tape called _Real_. Mary Lou's great and has some wonderful songs. It's just her and the guitar. For those in the Boston area, you may have heard her play in the subway stations, as she still does. She also has a song, _Camden Town Rain_, on the CD compilation titled _Stars Kill Rock_ put out by Kill Rock Stars in Olympia, WA. The CD compilation includes a mix of artists ranging from Mary Lou Lord to Tribe 8 to Cheesecake (another Boston band, sounding somewhat like Babes in Toyland, whom I also try to see). o Sam Black Church speed metal, basically. SBC recently signed to Taang! Records, speed metal/hardcore, good following, can sell out The Paradise (~500-600 people) with an all ages show. Great live show. The front man, Jet, and I went to school together; but, it's more than just a personal bias. He has wonderful enunciation, much needed for fast music, which comes from working in one of the top drum corps when he was younger. They do have a CD-5 out now on Taang! and should have just finished mixing their new CD, due out later this fall. o Only Living Witness similar genre and most recently played with SBC at Bunratty's, now called Local 186. The last time I saw them was almost 2 years ago with SBC. They were good enough then for me to remember them and have gotten much better and tighter than before; they definitely have fun. They have a CD out now; unfortunately, I don't recall the label. o Tree hardcore, heavy guitar; They have a CD titled _A Lot to Fear_ out on CherryDisc Records. Highly recommended. One of the interesting things about Tree is that they're somewhat politically correct, and are pretty much in your face about it. o Dirt Merchants grunge guitar sort of sound, they're a trio -- guitar, bass, drums. they're somewhat rough sounding, but have potential. They have a single (vinyl 45) out, _Mindfuck/Beware of Dog_ and, I believe, are releasing another single in the near future. Female lead singer on guitar. o The Dambuilders somewhat heavy; guitar, bass, violin(!!), drummer, all do vocals on various songs. Their new CD-5, _Tough Guy Problem_, is out on SpinArt. They also have various singles and some other CDs only available as imports (which I haven't seen yet). The violinist is really good. o Twig mellower guitar sound; even though they don't really sound like The Roches, the first time I heard Twig I was reminded of them. 2 guitars/vocals (both female), drums, bass. o Helium mellow/semi-popish-at-times, but somewhat psychedelic feel at times; trio, guitar, bass, drums. Mary, the lead singer/guitarist, is very good. I make a point to see almost all their shows. They're worth seeing. o The Moors mellow, 2 guitar duo. Female does vocals. Definitely worth going to see. Somewhat different than much of what's out there, locally. Maybe I'll write more and a better description later. I think I'll stop here. I only listed the fact that a vocalist was female because this list tends to veer towards female vocalists. These weren't meant to be wonderful synopsis of each band, just to be a brief listing and to mention a FEW of the bands I try to support in the Boston area and recommend to others. My summaries only got shorter near the end because I've had a long day, having processed several hundreds of new messages with a couple hundred more to go on new ones. I highly recommend each of the bands listed above, even if I didn't specifically say so in each entry. I also do make a point to try to see most of the above bands shows. This list was more off the top of my head.. there are definitely many others that could be included and are worth seeing. Others, by name only, to look for include Orangutang, Cobalt 60, Concussion Ensemble, Stompbox, Aimee Mann, Incenerator, Cheesecake, and Space Humpin' 1999. Again, just a small sampling... Funny, none of those bands have keyboards and that's my main instrument. Hmm.. There are several dozen of people who know her, I've seen 'Warpaint' in a catalogue, and I even know someone (emphasis on one :) who bought his copy in a record store. It surely takes some effort and some time, but it's not impossible. Bought a couple of surprise CDs last week, and I enjoy what I've found. Is there someone who can give me a bit of information about "The Motels"? I bought it with the expectancy that I know the singer of the band, but the album contains no information at all. Cover picture with a blank backside. :( The voice sounds to me quite a bit like an early Cyndi Lauper. I like this selftitled album very much. The other gem that I've found is "Alma Alma" by Yulduz Usmanova, the first western production of a young singer from Usbekistan, who is said to be a superstar in her home country and also very popular in Turkey. A great high voice, which reminds me of Elefteria and Ofra Haza. Traditional folk songs from Usbekistan and turkish melodies played with traditional and modern instruments. Well, it's nearly 11pm. Tinderbox was one of the first 4 CDs I ever purchased, and one which I will never get rid of *PURPLE* (I threw that last word in so I wouldn't have to end my sentance with a preposition *ORANGE* (I threw that one so I didn't have to end with the actual word preposition either *GREY* (is it ok to end a sentence with a conjunction?))) (Geez I needed to put emacs into show-match mode to get those parentheses right, and then I realized that dennis's quoted text didn't include a closing parenthesis, so I'll put one extra one in for good measure.)) -- | Alan Ezust ezust@{binkley.}cs.mcgill.ca Montreal, Quebec, Canada | |------------- McGill University School of Computer Science ----------------| Non-determinism means never having to say you are wrong. ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
