I can't remember if I heard anything about it before buying it, but I don't even feel it was worth the $2 it cost me. At worst I expected it would be ok, but I can't recall buying anything that sounded so overwhelmingly mediocre to me. I don't know what it is that rubs me the wrong way about this album, but it just leaves me cold. It has one more listen accorded to it before it's in the get rid of pile. I have Kirsty McColl's Kite, and really enjoy it. She has a thin breathy voice that I found a bit offputting, but the album really grew on me. It has some pretty clever wordplay and fun melodies. There's a cover of the Smith's "You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby", a fast song that got a bit of radio play called (something, maybe Free) World, and a few songs in French. I was interested in her from her duet on with Shane Mcgowen (sp) on the Pogues Fairy Tale in New York song. Maybe someone else can comment on Electric Landlady, which I don't have. I kind of like the Happy covers. I like how this dark sinister package has this gorgeous music inside, but with a dark underbelly to it. Sort of a dark and light sandwich, with darkness immediately obvious as a first impression, that slowly fades and returns. It's true, my ex-gf said "ick" as soon as I opened the package, and I'm sure many people feel that way, but I wouldn't want her to change. Another (negative) reference point is the difficulties 10,000 Maniacs had in gaining acceptance due to there name. Hi! Und jetzt kommt ein Klaus... :) It's been a while since I've been able to take care of the mail, what with one thing and another (the desire to avoid the flamewar of all flamewars with a member of my own family being tops among these reasons, but that's neither here nor there, as Mitch would expostulate), so here's a Klaus for you all. First, on Tuesday I had *just* enough time before I had to be at the radio station to stop in Middletown and pick up the only copy of _When I Was A Boy_ Record Express had. I unwrapped it on the air, and selected a random track to play, which happened to be "All The Candles In The World", imo the best track on the album. I was so blown away, I almost forgot to cue up another song. Wow. This album is amazing. I have some not so small problems with it, but as a whole it is definitely up there with _The Walking_ as Jane's masterwork, and has just displaced Bjork's _Debut_ as the best album of 1993 by far. Brand me a heretic and throw me to the Michael Bolton fanatics, but I daresay that, when all is said and done at the end of the year this album will remain the best of the year, even after _The Red Shoes_ has come out. (I've heard now four songs from _TRS_, so I have something to base this opinion on, unfortunately...) I'm on listen # 3 for this evening alone. Wow. It's... it's.... wow. :) ANYway... Scott wonders about 10,000 Maniacs: }I still haven't seen any of the unplugged performance, }unfortunately. That's really spiffy about the Iris Dement song! }I saw Iris perform back in April. She was great. Now is "Few and }Far Between" the name of a real CD5? Promo only? This cover is }something I've gotta hear! It's the CD single, available at a record store near you. It's not a bad song at all, though I must say David Byrne goes a long way towards ruining it completely for me. }>P.S. Does anyone else besides me think that H&K should come up with }> a better title for the best-of than "Rhodes Songs"? } }Yeah, maybe she oughta let the ectophiles name the album! Hmmm.... if I had the choice, I'd name it "Step Inside", but that's just me. :) Mitch notes: }If so, it would be a good idea if someone over there gave some }thought to how these respective networks (and, for that matter, }the feature and interview section of Radio 1) could be steered }onto Happy. Similar thought should, of course, be given }domestically to how to massage NPR in a similar manner. I've been saying this for well over a year now. NPR interviews such a wide variety of musical artists, from Victoria Williams to Shawn Colvin to Drink Me (that's how I discovered them- the reporter, I think it was Linda Wertheimer but I'm not sure, found them in a bar in the Village and asked them for an interview :) etc., that it's simply a crime that Happy has neither been interviewed on Morning Edition or All Things Considered, and an even bigger aberration that her music hasn't shown up in between segments on said shows. NPR has a telephone. All it takes is one well-placed call, and we're on our way. Volunteers, anyone? Suggestions as to whom to ask for in the news division? I'll call, I just need to get sufficiently prepared. mjm moaned: }Aimee Mann is opening for the Kinks in Chicago as well. I don't }know if I'll make it and it really sucks that they're at one of }those huge open-air places that makes it impossible to hear or }see much, and costs tons. I wish she would tour alone and play }small venues. Ah well, maybe eventually. Ah, if you only lived in New Haven. :) Aimee Mann was at Toad's Place on Monday night- the Kinks had the night off between playing at Great Woods (I think) and the Garden State Arts Center, so she booked a show there at quite the last minute. She and her little band had only 30 minutes of material rehearsed, since they're only opening on the tour, but they winged it for an extra 45 minutes or so and the results were surprisingly good and sometimes downright hilarious, such as the instance when Aimee set off on a guitar solo and quit a few seconds into it, assuring us we didn't want to suffer through the rest of it. :) For the final encore she had to take a few minutes to remember how to play the song. It was great. She was wearing a Til Tuesday t-shirt. :) And, the version of "Voices Carry" they played was amazing- I'm surprised nobody was slam-dancing to it. I nearly was, and I never do that sort of thing. All in all it was a wonderful show, and we were blessed to be able to see her on her own, I think. Do you concur, Tamar? (Sorry, Mike.) Speaking of Ectophiles going to concerts in mass quantities, Chris Sampson reports re Ingrid Karklins at The Buttonwood Tree: }Having no preconceived notions of what to expect, other than }Tamar's assurances that, despite an acquaintance's efforts, it }should not be labeled "that ethereal Latvian shit", :) Although "ethereal" is not the term I would ever use to describe either Ingrid or her music, that's still pretty funny. }Her backup band (of two) was also great, especially if you }believe, as she asserted, that they'd only rehearsed 3 times }before the five-gig tour! I was most surprised by the }drummer/percussionist, a "little slip of a thing" going by the }name SherryBaby. Yeah, they were pretty impressive, and I want to see them the next time around, once they've had a chance to get more used to the music. The original Backbone, John on bass and Thor on percussion (two musicians from the album- Thor did the little runes on the album cover, and according to Ingrid they mean something having to do with the album- lyrics or something, I can't recall for sure) blew these guys out of the water, though. Especially Thor, whose skill as a percussionist was otherworldly. }So, the show was great, and I finally got to see someone (other }than HR, HeRself) mentioned on this list. BTW, I didn't have }preconceived notions about IK, because I didn't expect her to be }coming this way, so I never paid much attention to the posts }about her.....:P She'll be back, too. She loves playing there. Yay! :) Ilka (you're back on Ecto!) sulked: }Oh, and Meredith, I'm sulking cause you didn't like "A Man }Called E"! I understand that 4 Non-Blondes isn't too exciting at }all (only exception for me "What's Up"), but I thought E is }really good! Never mind - you can't argue about taste, right??? It's not that I didn't like him, it's more like I wasn't inspired by the music enough to continue playing the tape once I had shut it off in the middle to take a phone call. Maybe I'll listen to it all the way through sometime, but I really don't know. It just did absolutely nothing for me, I guess. Sorry. :} (Ich soll Dir einen langen Brief schreiben, oder? Es ist eine Ewigkeit gewesen, es tut mir leid! :}) Anyway... as I'm sure has been posted before, Katemas in New Jersey was fun. Nothing like the extravaganza in Boston last year, but one can only handle one of those per decade, I think. :) It was great to meet you brni, and wonderful to see everyone else again. Oh, yeah- I stumbled across a promo cassette of the Cranberries album lying under a pile of trash at the radio station the other night, so of course I snagged it. :) And Tribe's new one, _Sleeper_ is on sale at Strawberries this week for only $10.99. I'm going to pick one up for me this weekend, yes I will, and maybe get it autographed on Sunday, too! Tribe is opening for Odds on Sunday at Toad's, whoever Odds are. All I know of them is that horrible song, "Heterosexual Man", which naturally didn't have me jumping to listen to the rest of the album, even though I know it is totally tongue-in-cheek. I don't think anyone around here cares, either- all the press I've seen for the show has been along the lines of, "Tribe is opening for some band this weekend- be there!" Same press also mentions that Tribe will be playing a free show at The Sting in New Britain, CT on Saturday, August 21. Anybody wanna join me? :) That's enough for now... playlist to follow. Later!
