Hi All! I'm actually caught up on ecto digests for the first time in over a month. I thought I'd better get off a message quicckly before another batch comes though. It seems like there are quite a few things I should have been posting about or responding to - appologies where ever applicable. Firstly, sorry to not replying to Bob about arrangements for Chris' visit. CErtainly count me in on whatevers happening. I have a largish one-room appartment, and no spare bed, but I'm happy to offer floor space if it's wanted. (the same goes for anyone else out there who's passing through Philly and needs somewhere to stay). ----- Next: the Kite sounds like a great idea for a birthday present. Jeff, am I in time to contribute, and if so how much and where should I send it to? I used to do quite a bit of kite flying, but seem to have lapsed since being in Philadelphia. I think this is partly because I haven't found a good place to fly around here, and partly what spare time I have seems to get used up on bike rides. Also I haven't made any kites for a long time, since I don't know anywhere local I can get ripstop, and since I no longer have access to my mother's sewing machine :-(. Now that the bike path to Valley Forge is open, and it's no longer a major ride to get there, what I should do is strap a kite to the bike one day and head out there. ----- I should also have posted something about the WXPN's Singer-Songwriter concert that they gave at Penn's landing a couple of weeks ago (as I said, I've been way behind on ecto, but better late than never I suppose). I went on the Saturday, when the artists included The Story, Janis Ian and Geofrey Gaines. The Story were a dissapointment. They were pretty good, about as good as the album which I like but don't think is exceptional (first one, I haven't heard the new one yet). But they certainly didn't live up to the rave reviews they've received on ecto. Janis Ian was excellent. Her performance was good, though not strikingly so, but some of her songs and lyrics were extremely moving. She seems to be a very talented song writer. Geofrey Gaines was also very good indeed. It's the second time I've seen him now, the first being at WXPN's "Five Star Night" last summer, and both times I've been impressed. This time, he had a "band" with him, which is to say a drummer and a bass player. I think the other two were friends helping out, since he said it was only the third time they'ed played together. If they were a little unrehersed, the energy and enthusiasm more than made up for it. He also did a solo acoustic section in the middle, including his wonderful cover of In Your Eyes. As a result of this, I bought Geofrey Gaines album, and will get Janis Ian's new album as soon as I can find it. ----- I'm still trying to work on getting people into Ashley Maher. The problem still is that one can't find her albums in this country. I could perhaps bring some back next time I'm in the UK, but that won't be for a few months. I wonder if there's anyone on the list in Europe who'll be visiting the states and would be willing to get some copies and bring them over? ----- Anyway, that's it for now. I'll try to keep a bit more current in the future. -Anthony ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 2 Aug 1993 15:17:02 -0700 (PDT) From: Neile Graham Subject: Ectophiles Guide entries They are indeed archived. I will be sending them along to you, Brian. obli-Happy news: There's a local cd store chain called Silver Platters which selects several hundred titles to have available for customers to listen to before buying. We went there Saturday and lo and behold there was _Equipoise_ in their Pop P-M binder. They don't have any in stock right now though. I have yet to see a copy of Equipoise on the shelf, though Tower is fairly good about keeping the rest in stock. --Neile neile@u.washington.edu ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 2 Aug 93 23:35:23 EDT From: mojzes@monet.rutgers.edu (brni) Subject: Re: Hello... i dunno about soapboxes... but i knows what i likes. personally, i would like to see an album of covers of "freebird", much like the "stairway to heaven" one. yeah. a lynyrd skynyrd in every pot, and a zeppelin in every garage... heh bernardo gui ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 3 Aug 93 0:06:55 EDT From: WretchAwry Subject: Chris is in LA Hi, Chris Williams is out in Los Angeles for SIGGRAPH and will be there until Sunday. For the past month or so, one of the sponsors for NPR's _All Things Considered_ has been ", distributors of Iris Dyment's album _Infamous Angel_". Today I heard, instead, ", distributors of Jane Siberry's album _When I Was a Boy_". Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of the record company :-). Anthony, thanks for the nice reply. I agree it is not anyone's place to establish general musical taste, but there is a lot of mediocre music out there being performed by mediocre artists and selling very well. And I agree that Radio shares a good deal of the blame by being resistant to new acts. Nice post, although it showed up as one of mine! (tee-hee!) (tee- hee???) (ye DAWGies!) I have heard some of Jane's album on WXPN, and I have to concur - this is something special. Bravo! (A&E!!?) And speaking of cable, last night Cinemax played "The Guyver" with Luke Skywalker. I believe that the word whoevere it was was searching for... That is, the word whose definition is "to do what Peter Gabriel did with his first 3 albums" is the adverb: Eponymously As in, "The first three Peter Gabriel albums, the first Lounge Lizards album, and , for that matter the first albums of many recording artist are all eponymously named. As for Lurie/DaFoe: What's the story? There's a Mapplethorpe portrait of the two of them, he's (supposedly) appeared in The Last Temptation of Christ and Wild at Heart.....hmmmmmmm. Saw Ingrid Karklins at the The Buttonwood Tree on Sunday (also saw Meredith, woj, Tamar, ...Tamar's roommate....Lisa?, and the newest ectophile, Steve (call me Chapin). Having no preconceived notions of what to expect, other than Tamar's assurances that, despite an acquaintance's efforts, it should not be labeled "that ethereal Latvian shit", I can safely report that I would not have expected what I heard. She has a beautiful voice and a great sensibility about voicings and arrangement, even when she breaks "the rules" (y'know, the ones that limit the number of tempo changes, etc.). Her stuff is ethereal, yes, and (mostly) Latvian, but is NOT shit. It's some of the newest stuff I've heard in years. Her backup band (of two) was also great, especially if you believe, as she asserted, that they'd only rehearsed 3 times before the five-gig tour! I was most surprised by the drummer/percussionist, a "little slip of a thing" going by the name SherryBaby. At first, I thought she looked out of place behind the drum kit, but once she played a few number and my preconceived ideas of what a drummer should look like dropped, I realized that she was great! And THEN she picked up the djembe'!!!! and I was even more impressed. Only later did I become impressed by the fact that the drum head was autographed by Babatunde Olatunji, whose 3-day intensive workshop she attended. More fodder for the envy-cells: she's going to Ghana for a while to study hand drumming over there. So, the show was great, and I finally got to see someone (other than HR, HeRself) mentioned on this list. BTW, I didn't have preconceived notions about IK, because I didn't expect her to be coming this way, so I never paid much attention to the posts about her.....:P ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 03 Aug 93 15:18:55 CET From: Ilka Heber Subject: Rhodes Songs Hello everybody, sorry, I'm a little late with my comments, but I'm on the "digest" version... I immediately went to visit my record store, and they had a copy! I can't wait to listen to it when I get home. The artwork looks wonderful! Since I have nothing better to do :), I might as well waste some bandwidth and type in some of the lyrics. Here's track 11 from Jane Siberry's _When I was a Boy_: AT THE BEGINNING OF TIME at the beginning of time before there were waves we'd sit in our boats we'd float there all day and there weren't any waves cuz there wasn't any wind cuz there wasn't any sun we were waiting for the world to begin we were waiting in the darkness each in our own boat each in our own thoughts sometimes you could hear people talking amongst themselves but... (someone had a boat with wheels and i said you're a bit early but i know how you feel) but mostly it was just silence and the silence only broken by the absence of the clinking of the masts and every now and then a bird would not fly by and someone would look up and say - what wasn't that? we were waiting in the darkness and one night (or was it day?) i was awoken from a dream i was dreaming of someplace like i'd never been and i heard someone say someone's fallen in and they can't swim so i leaned out and i pulled them in and he was holding his head and it was HUGE and shaped like a fish and he slid down to the crook of the keel and when i was sure he'd fallen asleep i fell back to my reverie we were waiting waiting waiting waiting in the darkness and you know what i miss most about that time? was the quality of blackness it was soft somehow in the absence of fear you could take it into your mouth and send it out through your teeth (my dear) but the silence... oh, if i could go back to those times i'd take that silence there i'd take it into myself and bring it back to you and this is what i'd say waiting in the darkness at the beginning of time before there were waves we'd sit in our boats we'd float there all day (or was it night?) and there weren't any waves cuz there wasn't any wind cuz there wasn't any sun we were waiting for the world to begin we were waiting for the world to begin now?... no. ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 3 Aug 93 16:41:15 +0200 From: brage@id.dth.dk (Jens P.
