Hi all! I talked to Kevin last night and he gave me the information about the new compilation album. Right now, it's in the mixing stage at Dr. Toby Mountain's place (Northeastern Digital Recording) and is due to be released officially August 18. Anyone who wants to, can order it now, just be aware that it's not quite finished yet. They'll start sending orders out as soon as they get the box from the CD plant. This is an unusual compilation, and isn't quite what I expected. The concept is even more wonderful (to me) than just stringing a bunch of songs together and calling it a "Best of." Happy described this as "the softer side" of Happy Rhodes and Kevin called it "a pretty album, pretty to listen to" and when seeing the track listing, I believe it! It isn't "ethereal" (or else "To Be E.Mortal" and "Dreams Are" would be on here) but will be a very "quiet" album. Still, there's a slight edge to it, simply because the lyrics to some of the songs are not what one would expect from a "softer side" album. Here's a track listing, though I don't know exactly how they'll be ordered on the release version of the album: ======================================================================== _Rhodes Songs_ The Wretches Gone Awry (Rhodes I) Ode (Ecto) The Revelation (Rhodes II) Because I Learn (Rearmament) If So (Ecto) I Have A Heart (Rearmament) Let Me Know, Love (Rhodes II) Temporary And Eternal (Equipoise) Save Our Souls (acoustic version, original on Equipoise) Feed the Fire (album version, Warpaint) Feed the Fire (acoustic version) I Say (album version, Equipoise) Ashes To Ashes (non-album acoustic cover) Given In (World Cafe live acoustic version, original on Rhodes I) In Hiding (live acoustic, original on Warpaint) Summer ======================================================================= The price for mail order is the same as the other normal CDs, $13.99 plus $2.00 shipping and handling in the USA. This is an official release and should be available in the stores that already carry Happy's music. I finally got around to asking Kevin if he preferred people to buy from stores or directly from them, and he encouraged store buying whenever possible, simply to encourage the distributors and stores to continue to carry Happy. Mail order will always be available for those who live in Happy challenged areas. An aside: if you buy Happy's music in a store, yet you'd like Happy's autograph, you can always mail her the CD booklet plus postage back, and Happy will sign it and send it via return mail. About the HR5 songs: Ectophiles were warned that these songs might appear on an official release, so I hope that no one who bought an HR5 is too upset to see them appear so soon. For newer Ectophiles who missed the posts about the HR5, here's the lowdown...Happy and Kevin pressed 1000 copies of a promo-only CD single, containing 5 songs, called HR5. Two of the songs are directly from the albums, 2 are acoustic versions of album songs, and one is a non-album cover. They sent most of these CDs to radio stations and other promotional outlets around the United States. Because we're so wonderful and they appreciate our support so much, H&K set aside about 200 copies to be sold to Ectophiles who wanted them. It's a fantastic gesture, because these are limited-edition CDs, and once they're gone, will never again be pressed. Happy is also personally signing the CDs before they go out to people. I expected these CDs to go fairly quickly, but Kevin said that they've sold about 75 so far, which means there are plenty left over. Happy said that they would send any remaining CDs out as promotional tools, but that she would wait, to be absolutely sure that all Ectophiles who want one, get one. I can understand, if someone is just interested in hearing the HR5 songs, people buying _Rhodes Songs_ and not getting the limited-edition CD. Still, I want to impress on Ectophiles who are undecided just how precious a collector's item this is. Song-wise, no, not anymore, but as a personal gesture from Happy and Kevin, yes. Once they're gone, they're gone. Once the offer is closed, the only way to get one is to haunt future record swap meets and Goldmine ads, and even then, should you find one, it won't be autographed to you from Happy. The HR5 is $12.00, which sounds like a lot for a 5 song CD, especially since the songs will now be available elsewhere, but cheap compared to how much they'll be going for in a few years :-). If anyone decides to go ahead and get one, and you've just joined Ecto on the past couple of weeks, since my last "official" post abut the HR5, please give me your name and I'll pass it along to Kevin. You see, I gave Kevin a list of Ectophiles and he's going by that list. They're *only* being offered to Ectophiles, so if you're not on that list I need to tell him that you've just joined. Since there are quite a few left, there's time for newer Ectophiles to be included. So if anyone knows someone who wants the HR5 but isn't an Ectophile, tell them to get on the list, and e-mail me. I really can't be put in the position of being asked to "approve" non-Ectophiles getting one. I'm following Kevin's instructions and I can't bend the rules. I've already been asked to bend the rules a few times and, except for once, I've ignored those requests. It's unfair to make me look like the bad guy, unfair to make me have to defend what one person called "an elitist position." The way I see it is that if you belonged to a fan club, and there were a fan club-only goodie offered, it's the same thing here. I realize that a computer net is different, since a computer and modem are a lot more expensive than paper and pencil, and there are lots of Happy fans who have no computer access. I can't defend the necessity of having computer access against being "an elitist" requirement, because it most certainly is one. No matter, until Happy has an offical fanclub with print newsletters and everything "normal" fan clubs entail, *Ecto* is the offical fan club, therefore these CDs are being offered only to Ectophiles. That's it. Anyone with computer access who is a big enough fan to want an HR5 should be on Ecto anyway, so my only sympathies lie with fans who have no computer access. There's nothing I can do for them though. (And if you think I'm not having a personal problem with this, then you don't know my non-net Happy-fan friend Charley :-)). Ok, enough of trying to act like an adult... _Rhodes Songs_ sounds *GREAT*! Beautiful songs, sometimes creepy lyrics, acoustic versions, and a new one that Kevin calls his "new favorite"!! Kevin said that "Summer" would blow me away, but he wouldn't tell me any details about it so I have no hintful tidbits to pass along. I can't wait! I have to admit that the album version song selections are a bit of a suprise. Happy obviously picked them for very personal reasons and it will be so interesting to see what the final order of songs is like and to listen to the CD as a whole, as Happy intended. Each individual song is excellent on its own, but there's a pattern of dark and light that is fascinating to think about. I don't want to say anymore until the CD is released and I can better figure out what Happy's up to here. A couple of last things...I did ask Kevin how many Equipoises have sold and he said around 6000. They're disappointed that the album seems to have fizzled when they had high hopes that it would be the one to break Happy. It got very little airplay and was pretty much ignored even by stations that were crazy about Warpaint. WXPN in Philly is the best example of this. Helen Leicht is the only programmer who really paid attention to it. Mike Morrison referred to it as "a sophmore slump" album! Ah well, what can you do? Happy *will* get discovered and she'll keep on making music no matter what. Speaking of....Happy had told me that she was working on writing new songs and Kevin said that she's looking to release her 7th album by early next summer! Bad news though: the tour thing is stalled for now. I have no more details but if it gets back on track you'll be the first to know. That's all she wrote...bye! She went shopping!! Run! Hide! Batten down the hatches!! I WENT RECORD SHOPPING!!!! Bwhahhaahaha! I needed it too, so I had to do it. Really, it was personal therapy! Yeah, really (you there, in the front row, quit laughing!) it really was. This has actually not been such a good week for me. Chris is my anchor, and I miss him terribly when he's away. I really needed something to help me snap out of a pretty deep depression and I did it by spending money :-). Actually, it's a Christmas present. No kidding! My dad and stepmom bought me a Christmas present that never arrived and since it was insured, they filed a claim. What with paperwork going back and forth between Florida (where they live in the winter) and Leavenworth, Kansas (where they are now) and Chicago (I had to sign things too) it took a long time to settle, and dad finally just sent a check for what the present cost. So I went RECORD SHOPPING-Yay! Depression? *What* depression?? I'm so happy! Wow, where to begin... Well, first there was the Big Bang, then the earth cooled, then the dinos came, then lots of time passed... ...then, Friday night I got off work and ran for the "L" because I needed to get to the bank before it closed and I was thinking it closed at 6pm but was afraid it closed at 5:30. Our bank is not in the loop and it takes an "L" and a bus ride to get there. I had to go there in person to get my dad's check cashed. So, I get to Belmont and get off the "L" and go to the bus stop. Uh oh, there's been a Cubs game at Wrigley Field and there are literally dozens of people at the stop. I waited and waited and waited some more. I get off work at 4:40 and I got to Belmont at 5:15pm and the bus finally came at 5:45 (grrrr, this is a *major* street too) and I just barely made it to the bank, which did, in fact, close at 6pm. I had had plans to cash the check, then do one of two things. Either go to see "The Heart In Winter" (so I could say to Neal, "see, see, I really do read your posts!") or go to a double feature of "The Crying Game" and "Map of the Human Heart" (I still haven't seen Map) and if I'd done the second I probably would have stayed for the midnight show, which was "Bram Stoker's Dracula" but, I should have known better..., I decided to walk over to Rose Records-Ashland which is a couple of blocks from the bank. The manager there is a great guy named Kevin, and he is a Happy fan. He always makes sure that the Happy section is well-stocked. He was there and we ended up talking for quite a while about Happy and Kate and music in general. He showed me the new edition of the Ladyslipper catalog and I was pleased to see that Equipoise has been added. There was a nice blurb about it but I wasn't able to photocopy it. If anyone has the new catalog, please type it in. I myself have to get back on their mailing list so I can get the catalog. We also talked about Tori, because this store is the one that Tori appeared at for her songbook signing. He still marveled at how Tori stayed until the very last person had been taken care of. People from the record company tried to get her to leave and she refused. Tori is *so* nice! I looked for the Lisa Germano but they didn't have any copies in stock, then I spent a while looking in the cut-outs & sale section. I bought 2 albums that I already had, but wanted on CD. Phranc's "Folksinger" I've had this for years on LP. Phranc is a fantastic artist and this is my favorite album by her. It's mainly Phranc and her guitar and harmonica, though a couple songs have other instrumention. Some of the songs are silly and funny, such as the one where she proclaims her hatred of female mudwrestling ("It's embarrassing!") and a put-down of the Los Angeles "cororner to the stars" Thomas Noguchi ("I want a corornor less like Noguchi and more like Quincy, M.E.") and others are very serious, such as "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll" about a maid who is murdered and whose killer is only sentenced to 6 months in jail, and another about Janet Cooke(sp?), the Washington Post reporter who made up the story about the boy with AIDS. All of the songs tell a story about something or other, and all are interesting. Phranc is sometimes called "the ultimate womyn's music artist" but that's only because she started her career on a womyn's music label. When I was in Kansas City and had regular run-ins with the "womyn's community" Phranc was on their shit list because she decided to sign with a major label (Island). She's definitely an unabashed, rightfully unapologetic lesbian, but always seems to have to "defend" herself in interviews. She's never really gotten the attention she deserves, and I have no idea what she's doing now. I'm not a huge fan, and I hesitate to recommend her to anyone who's not into pure folk, but I like her stories, and I'm glad I found this album on CD. (I've also met her and she's very nice!) Texas "Mother's Heaven," I've had on cassette since it was released. Who posted about Texas not too long ago? I meant to jump into the thread but never did. I love this album! It's The Cowboy Junkies meets Ry Cooder via Stevie Ray Vaughn. And the band is from Scotland! Sharleen Spiteri's vocals are strong and ethereal and soulful. This is music, guitar blues rock, that I wouldn't think I'd like, but I do. A lot! At Rose I also picked up another copy of Rhodes I, just to have it on hand (I gave my last extra copy to Tori Amos) and I also got a dud, Nancee Kahler's "Songs Without Words," but it only cost $2.99. I have to admit that I haven't listened to it all the way through, which I will do, but what I heard when flipping through it was pretty lame. I was so disappointed that Rose didn't have the Lisa Germano album I decided to go to Tower and get it. First though, I stopped and ate and I'm glad I did, because while eating I sat reading the Illinois Entertainer and in it was a review of Susan Volez's new album. I don't remember reading much about it before, but this review made me want to get it. Unfortunately the review was paired with a not so good review of the Lisa Germano album, but I decided to overlook that. So off I traipsed to Tower and came away with: Lisa Germano "Happiness" A bit more involved, and definitely more polished than her first album. I like this album quite a bit, and I'm not at all sorry I bought it, but I still think I like her first one better. I don't know yet, since I'm still getting to know this one. All the songs are good, though I wish Lisa had included the lyrics. Anyone who already likes Lisa's music will be happy with this one, and if you don't know Lisa, this is a great album to start with. Her vocals are still tentative and breathy. Many would say the vocals are quirky, as is the music and lyrics, but it's quite natural is is very much a part of Lisa's charm. The only artist to compare her to, even marginally, is Mary Margaret O'Hara, Queen of Quirk! I highly recommend this album. Susan Voelz "13 Ribs" Move over Lisa Germano and Mary Margaret O'Hara, you have company, excellent company! This is one wonderful album! Susan is the former(?) violin player for Poi Dog Pondering. I don't know if Susan and Lisa and Mary have heard of each other, but they'd make a killer trio (especially with Susan's and Lisa's dueling violins). Susan stands on her own, and it may be wrong to associate her so closely with Lisa, but the two albums really do go together so well. 3 times I played "Happiness" and "13 Ribs" back to back and it was almost like listening to one super long album. A bonus is that the lyrics are included and one major difference between Lisa and Susan is that Lisa tends to dwell on unhappiness, especially wrt relationships, and Susan is more of a storyteller and observer of life's little weirdnesses. She even includes a short "explanation" before each song's lyrics. Susan plays violins, piano and guitars and other musicians throw in bass, guitars, congas, other percussion and, in one song, viola, cello, banjo and accordion! Highly recommended, especially if you're already a Lisa Germano fan. The Story "the Angel in the House" I agree with all the raves that have already appeared in Ecto! Except for one or two songs, I really like this album. I have to admit to being suprised, because I disliked nearly every song on their first album. I never said much because I know that there are quite a few Story fans on Ecto, plus I was told that I'd feel differently if I saw them in concert. I haven't had that pleasure, so I only listened to the first album a couple of times, played one song on my show, then put it up on the shelf. It was an album that I wasn't willing to give a lot of listens to in order to let it grow on me. I have over 500 female-vocal CDs and there are too many that I *already* like and want to listen to. My reaction to this album is the total opposite, in that I liked it right away. The Story will be performing live in Tower Records August 11 (I think. I'll have to double-check the date) and though there wasn't a notice about a concert that night, I assume they'll be playing somewhere. If it is the 11th, Christo and Adrian will be here and we'll all go. (Geez, I hope they're playing at an all-ages place, or else Adrian won't be able to get in since he's only 19. FYI newer Ectophiles, Adrian's my son and he'll be visiting before going back to college.) Heidi Berry "Heidi Berry" Ooooh, this album is a wonder to behold! It's beautiful, moody and atmospheric, in a traditional English garden at night sort-of-way. Fans of June Tabor and All About Eve should run, not walk, to their nearest store and buy this album! Highly, highly, highly recommended! The Cranberries "Everybody hates long album titles, so why do it?" Yes! I was told I'd like this and I sure do. It's been well-described in Ecto so I won't do it too. Highly recommended, espescially to fans of The Sundays. Cyndi Lauper "Hat Full of Stars" This one I'm certain I know I'll like, but I haven't listened to it yet. I don't know why. I will! Thank goodness most of those were on sale! The only one I paid full price for was the Heidi Berry, and it's certainly worth full price. Luckily it's not an import for American buyers, but that wouldn't have mattered. When I got a dub of Heidi's 2nd album "Love" I posted that I liked the album but that I wouldn't pay full import price for it. Guess what(1)? I'm *still* waiting for it to be released in America and I still wouldn't pay full import price for it. Guess what(2)? I'd definitely pay full import price for this one. Nice that I didn't have to. I looked for the Bjork CD single while still at Tower but they didn't have it. I also checked the Happy section and a Rhodes II, another Equipoise and a coouple more Ectos had been added since I was there last. A Rearmament has sold too. Warpaint is *still* the only album listed in the MUSE computer system (which Rose Records also has now. I thought it was just a Tower thing.) Thinking that my record shopping was finished for the night I went to catch the bus. After waiting and waiting and waiting some more, I ended up hopping on a bus that wasn't my bus, but which I knew would get me somewhat closer to home. I was minding my own business, reading Pulse magazine, when I looked up as the bus was passing Reckless Records. It was still open!! Reckless is in an unusual place, out of the way, and they close so early that I hardly ever go there anymore. After about 2 seconds of decision-making I got off the bus at the next stop and walked back. I am *SO* glad I did!!!! It turns out they have late hours on the weekends during the summer. I didn't have much time to look around, because I got there right before they closed. They have so many CDs a person could spend hours there. Most of their CDs are used, and they rotate stock between the San Francisco and the London store. It's a dangerous place, pocketbook-wise, and though I've found some of the coolest things in my CD collection there, it's a very good thing that it's in an out-of-the way place. I only got as far as the D bin, and I found: Beme Seed "Lights Unfold" Beme Seed "Purify" I don't know about these yet. I had heard of the band but hadn't heard what they sound like. I was willing to get both of these because they were cheap, $3.99 & $4.99. I've only played a few songs from one of the album. Those songs are noize with female vocals attached and while I won't say "ugh" yet, I was disappointed. Another time, another mood....maybe, but not now, not when I've got a dozen other albums that I want to listen to over and over again. Sandy Denny "Like An Old Fashioned Waltz" This was cheap too, only $5.00. I like Sandy Denny, but her material and arrangements tend to be so uneven I think of her as a song artist instead of an album artist. I wonder what kind of music she'd be doing now if she were still alive. So many of her songs are pure smaltz, especially on this very uneven album, that I cringingly picture her as a lounge singer. Whatever, her good songs are very, very good, and her bad songs (and bad arrangements that ruin good songs) are to wince for. Her voice, always truly wonderful, makes her a (to me) a frustrating artist to listen to, because I want her material to always be as good as her voice always is. Deux Filles "Silence and Wisdom" Yow! YOW!, I say! I've had a really bad, scratchy, lo-fi recording of this album for years and assumed that it was the best I was ever destined to get, since their albums are *so* obscure. Finding this mere seconds after it was announced that the store was now closed was an act of pure, wonderful destiny. It was one of those moments where I'm standing there somewhat bored and hurried and hoping to find at least one more thing to make the stop at Reckless worthwhile, and I saw this and I stared at it, not believing what I was seeing... I let out a yelp and a "yow!" and a couple of oh my gods and hugged it, literally hugged it, and rubbed my eyes and stared some more, certain that I was hallucinating. I've had moments before like that at Reckless (Anne Pigalle's "Everything Could Be So Perfect," and Iva Bittova's "River of Milk" are the ones that come closest) but this is something that I literally never, *ever* thought I'd find. It was an import from England (though Deux Filles are from France) but to me, the import price was mere spare change in exchange for a CD full of magic. I'll post more about this group... And, as an extra added bounus, I was able to buy Love Spirals Downward "Idylls" I'd had a dub of this album since my friend Scott brought it over and I'd been looking for the CD ever since. I finally found it at Reckless. Since the store was closing I asked for it specifically and the clerk checked the CDs in back. They had it and now I'm the proud owner of one of the most beautiful, shimmering, ethereal albums I've ever heard. So highly recommended to ethereal fans that the recommendation scale breaks into tiny pieces! I definitely surpassed my own record for the most *good* albums bought in one evening, and I am very, very happy! (I am sorry I missed the movies though) To recap my own recommendations: 101%...Deux Filles, Love Spirals Downward, Heidi Berry 90%.....Lisa Germano, Susan Voelz, The Cranberries, The Story 80%.....Texas 40%.....Phranc, Sandy Denny Vickie "My ears are lucky to hear these glorious songs..."
