Is there some other city/region in Australia that begins with TAS that I'm not thinking of?" Then I realized they were *all* scrambled. ;-) >Am I to assume from the map, that they think somewhere in the US is in >Australia ??? Well, if you sort of squint when you look at that map, it looks just the vaguest bit like the USA without Texas. Tasmania vaguely corresponds to Florida (on that map, you couldn't really tell it's an island and not a peninsula). There's a little x where, if it were a US map, New York might be (though actually, I'd've put that x farther north. Having Schenectady so close to, well, I guess that's vaguley close to Sydney? seems a bit too far south...making "new england" way too large). But no, I'm being a nerd. Some months ago, I mentioned that my dulcimer teacher had played Ashokan Farewell at a performance and that it was great and that she followed it up with a sappified Dixie (because she had heard a tale about AF being written about a person named Ashokan who went off to the American Civil War, and so did Dixie as "Dixie Goodbye," dedicated to poor sergeant Dixie). We really enjoyed both. Yesterday, I got an announcement of her new album, and both songs are on it, in that order, though the flyer doesn't say what version of Dixie she's giving her teeming public. The album, available on CD or tape, sounds pretty fair. It's a mix of tunes from her and other composers, and is named for Scott Joplin's song Heliotrope Bouquet. Oh... "she" is Sue Carpenter, a dulcimer player known for her unique fingerpicking style. The other artists on the disc with her are Roy Atkinson on guitar, bass, and bongos; Anne Bailey on percussion; Laurie Anderson Bishop on cello, Craig Palmer on hammered dulcimer; Ian Hunter on synthesizer; Susan Trump on mountain dulcimer; and Homer the Siamese Cat doing vocals on Sue's song "Homeless Siamese." Some of the cuts promise to be hokey: Under the Boardwalk, Downtown, and OhSuzannah. Others are great solo and probably at least good with backup artists. She's doing this disc herself, so yu can only get it from her, and I have the address if anyone wants it. Troy/Albany Ectophiles might want to stop by the Brown and Moran Brewing Company on Sunday, August 15, for the release party and a performance. Lori and I won't be able to attend (*&%$#@@*&&^!) because we'll be on our first vacation trip ever (yay!). and now, back to our feature presentation. alanm ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 30 Jul 1993 19:01:42 +1000 (AEST) From: anthony@xymox.apana.org.au (Anthony Horan) Subject: Re: heidi berry In apana.lists.rec.happy-rhodes, article <930728195719_555063.0_FHI61-1@CompuServe.COM>, you wrote: > Vickie queried: > >ps, also on this compilation is a *wonderful* new Heidi Berry song > called > >"The Moon and the Sun." Aimee Mann is getting fairly good airplay at our station. It seems as though we are way behind though cause I just looked at the May Gavins and most of our current songs in heavy rotation were already well in the charts. Last week in Memphis Court and I went to Bookstar, the greatest book store on the planet (imho). While I was scoping the foreign language section frantically looking for an English-Irish Dictionary, (which I found after a minimum year long search), Court came running over with a large book, she was practically bubbling out of her skin. When I looked at it I nearly jumped out of my skin too, it was The Hound and the Falcon trilogy in one complete volume. Yummmm.... If you haven't read any Judith Tarr I urge you to go out and get this....it's brilliant!! *yippie* For those who have, run, fly do whatever is necessary to get it, cause if you were like me and Court, having read the libraries copies, and then only able to find the first book The Isle of Glass, and for some reason never being able to find the last two (if i'm not mistaken the whole trilogy was out of print??), you'll want this! Wow, nice run-on sentence :) Yes, I was/am a little excited about this. :) everyone have a good katemas, 4 katefans from Birmingham are coming tomorrow, along with a host of others, so it should be a good time down here :) kiri ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 30 Jul 1993 16:01:26 CDT From: Subject: "'Cause addition is commutative"--Tom Lehrer The proof Justin cited WRT Kate's birthday and the anniversary of Penguin paper backs is an object lesson in how the higher mathematics can illuminate the most arcane aspects of life :-).
