I finally got the new catalog from Ladyslipper. THey not only had Equipoise, they have RhodeSongs too. Here are all the reviews from the catalog. HAPPY RHODES VOLUME I Most debut releases are a bit tentative, and usually rightly so. However, this upstate New York native debuted herself into the music world with a double cassette in 1986, obviously having no qualms about showing herself-- and how thrilled we are that she's here! Incredible voice, lots of dramatic synthesizer, plus her earlier work such as this album is also characterized by lovely acoustic interludes. The artwork is an original painting of something hungry-looking (out of Clive Barker's "Cabal"?). Highly recommended (a comment you're going to be reading frequently among the next few listings)! (AG007) HAPPY RHODES VOLUME II If you haven't read the review of Volume I yet, please do so now , then order them both. In fact, read on, and get them all! I promise you won't regret it, unless the covers give you nightmares, or something (and if they do, perhaps this is the time to check out that great therapist your friends keep recommending). Includes _Under and Over the Brink_, _One Alien_, _ To the Funnyfarm_, _The Revelation_. (AG008) HAPPY RHODES REARMAMENT More electronic than her first two releases, this 1986 recording contains shades of early Kate Bush (most notably _Lionheart_): Lovely ethereal vocals, multi-layered melodies that reach right in and hook you, and wry, quirky lyrics. Her first 3 albums were released within the same year; all we can assume is that she's been singing, songwriting and playing since the early embryonic stages, given the high level of sophisticaiton and all-around superb quality. Also some stylistic references to Cocteau Twins. Love this artist, and each of her recordings! (AG0011) HAPPY RHODES ECTO Happy has a voice which will be (exhaustively) compared to Kate Bush and Annie Lennox's; there's just no way to avoid the comparisons, but her visions are a bit darker, say in the gothic-apocalyptic vein - or, rather , lots of blood red roses and peeling wallpaper kind of moods. Anyway, it's just the greatest voice, and when she self-harmonizes, the result is just heavenly! The instrumentation is highly melodic and sometimes heavy synth, with sprightly counterpoints - "complex and labyrinthine but at the same time totally natural." This 1987 release is her 4th; highly recommended! (AG0013) HAPPY RHODES WARPAINT This 1991 release, Happy's 5th (not bad for a mere babe of 26!) and most polished to date, "drifts into the listener's psyche like urgently whispered messages from the spirit world". This self-confessed music addict brings a fresh energy to our collection of electronic/experimental music by combining fly-on-the-wall observations of life and living with an impressive array of electronic effects, plus a touch of haunting European-ish violin. The result is warmer than most synthesizer recordings, mostly due to her voice, which remains primarily in the lower registers here (Annie Lennox, is she yours?). Her bold and beautiful expression, vision and artistry account for her large cult following which we predict you'll be joining as soon as you experience her. Highly recommended! (AG0017) HAPPY RHODES EQUIPOISE Vampire, angels, symbionts, aliens - this visionary artist seems to possess a multiplicity of perception; insights combined with prophecy, like floating in water and looking both above and below the surface at the same time - things get kinda wavery and never stop moving... Musically, the mood on this 1993 release is very languid, with a simpler musical structure (though still many multi-layered vocals) than in her previous recordings. Sweet, melancholy rhythms spliced with her amazing vocals - on several cuts she self-harmonizes in extreme high and low registers, and you'll be constantly reminding yourself that this isn't a Kate and Annie diet! We'll probably keep highly recommending this artist for years to come...but we advise you to check her out now! (AG0019) HAPPY RHODES RHODESONGS This 1993 retrospective contains some tracks from previously released albums; some from a radio-only CD called HR5, which features some incredible acoustic versions of "Save Our Souls," "Feed The Fire," and Bowie's classic "Ashes To Ashes" plus a new one or two. If you're not familiar with Happy Rhodes, this is a great way to experience the breadth of her talent, and see what all the commotion's about; and if you're a fan already, you'll just have to have it. Since I posted a wee blurb about Steven Brust's album, I thought I'd make a post further explaining the types of music on his album and who the Flash Girls are and all that. If you already know, by all means skip this... :) Steven Brust is a fairly well-known and critically acclaimed fantasy novelist. Author of the Vlad Taltos series, as well as a book in the Fairy Tales series, and numerous others. A couple of them even mention music (go figure....)... Well, Steve plays drums of varying types, banjo, guitar... and also sings. I've listened to him play at *many* music parties up in Minneapolis, he also plays drums out at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival with a band called Morrigan. And he plays drums in the band Cats Laughing. And he writes cool songs. And does the occasional coffeehouse type gig on his own. His album A ROSE FOR ICONOCLASTES was released last October. It's mostly acoustic type music.... you might say folksongs. Some are quite humorous and I hear have even been played by "Dr. Demento"... The album features lots of guest musicians, many of them former or current members of the band Boiled in Lead... The Flash Girls also appear, as does Lojo Russo (member of Gallowglass Irish Trio and Cats Laughing and now doing solo acts...).... The fiddling of Gary Schulte is showcased, etc. etc. etc. The usual Minneapolis music crowd is there in full-force, I guess you could say. Adam Stemple (of Boiled in Lead and also Cats Laughing) produced the album. And co-wrote a few of the songs. Other songs were co-written by Nate Bucklin. It's really a fine album, I like it a lot. But anyone familiar with Steve's books will know that the man can write. And that extends to some fine, witty lyric writing. His voice isn't the greatest thing you may hear, but it has character and enthusiasm and well, I like it. Neil Gaiman fans may note that there is a song Steve wrote on the album called "Neil Gaiman Pastiche #27" that is really cool. Songs range from beautiful to funny to beautiful. Quite nice, IMHO. YMMV. (next post will be about the Flash Girls... Steve's album is available from SteelDragon Press, Box 7253, Minneapolis, MN 55407 -- drop them a line and ask for their catalog and do tell them Laurel says "hi"...) :::: Laurel Krahn ::: lakrahn@inst.augie.edu ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: "There's a ring around the moon, long long time 'til day, play me one more tune, please don't go away." - Greg Brown ======================================================================== From: lakrahn@inst.augie.edu (Laurel) Subject: The Flash Girls Date: Thu, 28 Apr 1994 11:06:51 +22293638 (CDT) Well, my last post was about Steven Brust's album.... This one is about an album by the Flash Girls called THE RETURN OF PANSY SMITH AND VIOLET JONES. It's probably more ecto-fodder than Steve's album, I think.... just 'cuz of the female vocals. :) Also, I know a couple of cool Neil's that would recommend it. Our own Neile Graham, and well.... Neil Gaiman.... The Flash Girls are: Emma Bull, fine fantasy & SF writer & editor. Also a member of the band Cats Laughing.... and Lorraine Garland, fine fiddle player and former/sometimes member of the band Morrigan... They both sing on the album, Emma plays guitar and Lorraine plays fiddle. The album features the usual band of suspects.... guest appearances by Steven Brust and the usual Boiled in Lead guys (Robin Adnan Anders, Todd Menton, Drew Miller, Adam Stemple)... So, yes, it's acoustic music. They play some traditional songs and jigs and such, as well as some written by Lorraine. They do a reworking of Emma's song "Signal to Noise" (which was featured in her novel WAR FOR THE OAKS and in many publications since, and on a Cats Laughing album)... that is very lovely. They perform the beautiful song "Death on Hennepin" by John Van Orman. And, well, they do five songs that were written or co-written by Neil Gaiman. (yes, the same Neil Tori talks about, author of fine books and the Sandman comix and all that stuff.... all around cool guy...) Neil also wrote an "afterword" for the liner notes... (show up at a Flash Girls show and he just might be there... maybe... well, at least in spirit.... ;-p) The songs also vary from really really pretty to quite humorous. And, well, as is to be expected from this crew, most of the songs are about love and/or death. (it's a running joke at their shows, people yell out that they want a song about love or death... Emma & Lorraine say "good, that's all we know" or words to that effect...) They, like Steve, can be seen gigging around the Minneapolis area... and also playing at music parties at finer Science Fiction and Fantasy conventions.... Oh yeah, Adam Stemple also produced this album... and yeah, this one is also available from SteelDragon Press, Box 7253, Minneapolis, MN 55407. Note: SteelDragon Press is run by Will Shetterly & Emma Bull... right now, you can write to them for information on the Flash Girls (get on their mailing list!); to get a catalog with info on stuff by Steven Brust, Will, Emma, and the rest; you can write to them for info on Will Shetterly's grassroots campaign to run for Governor of Minnesota; you can write to them to find out about the no-budget movie they're making of Emma novel WAR FOR THE OAKS..... and do tell them that Laurel says "hi".... (I'm not in the cities these days, I'm in exile in South Dakota, so this is my lame way of staying in touch.... ;-p) (you might mention the internet... :)) I was gonna post about Cats Laughing, but I'll get to that later, some other day, mayhaps. Suffice to say it's a legendary band. ;-p ::: lakrahn@inst.augie.edu ::: Laurel Krahn :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: "If you need me, me & neil'll be hangin out with the DREAM KING" - Tori Amos neil says hi by the way ======================================================================== From: klaus@inphobos.wupper.de Date: Thu, 28 Apr 1994 00:03:25 Subject: Today's your birthday friend.... i*i*i*i*i*i *************** ***HAPPY******* ********BIRTHDAY*** ******************* *** Brad Hutchinson *** *********************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Brad Hutchinson Tue April 28 1964 What sign? I had several courses in Elizabethan drama, a number of Russian and Soviet lit courses, the expected surveys, and a number of poetry seminars/workshops. I, however, have never pursued anything with the poetry I've written, it was mostly for fun. I've always enjoyed literary interpretation.
