The actual technology in question is called World Wide Web; NCSA Mosaic just happens to be the most popular "browser" client. (Client programs are available for pretty much every window-based platform, and even for text-only systems, although you'll probably have a hard time hearing music through the latter!) The project you're referring to is the Internet Underground Music Archive, which currently features submissions from 40 artists, none of whom I've ever heard of. :) The command to give your WWW client is http://sunsite.unc.edu/ianc/index.html ...which will get you to a "home page" with pointers to submissions by the following: A Halo Called Fred Highland Park, New Jersey, USA A Halo Called Fred is your typical Acoustic Guitar, Bass, Tupperware trio that has an invisible friend named Chester and performs unique songs with titles ranging from "My Name Is Satan" to "Mr. Hooper". Angel, Mark Indian Head, Maryland, USA "Mark Angel is a smooth, erotic, yet tasteful music artist with originals, his band premieres as the freshest youth music in America." Boneyard San Luis Obisbo, California, USA Live grunge thick as tar from a truely mighty and unsigned trio. Brookman, Scott Richmond, Virginia, USA "When I Die You Can't Have My Organs" is a very funny song about a character's defiant refusal to donate his organs; they're his, after all, and he's keeping them. The song, according to Brookman, who has serious doubts about community spirit, is among the best sounding on his latest cassette, despite a speedy recording session. Brother Free Santa Cruz, California, USA Spirtual folk hip-hop from Santa Cruz, CA's most underground artist, Robert Worzala. Conti, Marguerite Santa Cruz, California, USA Santa Cruz solo folk artist sings love song for a Prince. Deth Specula Santa Cruz, California, USA Deth Specula is a five-man, guitar-oriented, neo-retro band from Santa Cruz and plays both originals and covers. To quote Thomas Jefferson, "... they rule ...." Eden Retread Santa Cruz, California, USA Eden Retread, a four-piece rock/funk/pop/jazz band from Santa Cruz wrote this song inspired by the true story of the singer's parents. When they were first dating, his mother briefly broke up with his (to-be) father after seeing Warren Beatty in the movie "Splendor in the Grass". Eggs Arlington, Virginia, USA Indie jazzy, mellow, melodic -- like the The Monkees on ludes from the ubercool label Teen Beat. Five Times Fast San Francisco, California, USA Five Times Fast is the solo project of Eric Friedmann, who is also in The Mudkats. The song uploaded to IUMA is "Darling Corey," a song in the public domain covered by such notables as Pete Seeger. Hastings, Larry Santa Cruz, California, USA A peppy, sparkly, and ornate all-MIDI instrumental, stylistically smack-dab between "Synergy" and "The Main Street Electrical Parade". Lots of hooks, lots of drums, lots of treble. Kessey, Susan Santa Cruz, California, USA A very positive message conveyed through a contemporary folk song. Right in sync with IUMA's vision. Killer Kiwis Chicago, Illinois, USA "Why can't a band play whatever the @$&! they want??!" In the tradition of Hector Berlioz, Frank Zappa, and They Might Be Giants, Chicago's killer kiwis bring you Free . Lindbergh, Don Indianapolis, Indiana, USA Warm, bright pop filled with fine melodic hooks and harmonies. Sticks in your head the way oatmeal sticks to your ribs. MISS Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Distinctive contemporary electronic dance music moving from a ballad to techno and back from MISS's forthcoming album a pretty mess . Nereid Cluster Santa Cruz, California, USA What has four legs, six to eight eyes, one musician and one lyricist? What band works entirely from on-the-fly improvisation for their material? What band will write a tune for you if given five words? Look no further for the answer to these (and more!) questions. Panel Donor Lawrence, Kansas, USA Untitled sonic grunge from "the next Seattle," Lawrence, Kansas. Pat 'N Mike & James Boulder, Colorado, USA Plasma Boy San Francisco, California, USA Blessed are the Random, for they shall inherit the Goat Hammer. Negativland meets Butthole Surfers meets Godzilla. Platinum Kiss Kiss Unknown, Unknown, Japan Poppy Santa Cruz, California, USA Raw, wrenched, and twisted guitar noise tempered by clean and lively bass lines and tight and grooving drum beats with a voice above it all both smooth and dynamically manic. Ambient mood swings and tempermental songwriting have drawn comparisons to such bands as Smashing Pumpkins, Pixies, Jane's Addiction, and Sugarcubes. Rash Behavior Santa Clara, California, USA The Y&T sound coming from Santa Clara appealing to the tough crowds there. Rash Behavior has paid their dues. Smida, Gerry Santa Cruz, California, USA This song is in the tradition of Celtic folk music. Upbeat and positive, but not sickeningly so. Strickland, William Santa Cruz, California, USA A wacked out story of a daydreaming office worker. Eclectic music backs this train-of-thought, improvised story. The Bridge Toronto, Ontario, Canada Three indiviuals from different musical backgrounds inspired by English Pop to Industrial to Jazz perform their first recording, the synth-pop tune "I Believe." The Clavens San Francisco, California, USA The Edlos Corte Madera, California, USA The Bad Boys of A Capella. The San Francisco Chronicle describes them as "clever ... funny ... inventive ... clean and swinging harmonies." The Limit Santa Cruz, California, USA Nothing Else Matters is an advance single release by a new quartet from Santa Cruz, CA. With an EP of original material due out in the spring of 1994, the group decided to rush this single through. The Mudkats San Francisco, California, USA The Mudkats play upbeat heavy rock with vocal harmony. Most musicians are reluctant to describe their music precisely, and we're no exception; but one might ask "What if The Dickies covered Rush?" The Noses Olympia, Washington, USA The Noses, from Olympia, Washington, have achieved an alchemy with their original material, blending the punchy, hook-laden sound of the 60's with the raw power and energy of current bands like U2 and The Police. Until Then Do I Wait is an angst-ridden but poppy tune penned by Kelly while awaiting his girlfriend's return from the Far East. She came back, they split up, Kelly got drunk. The Tenth Man San Francisco, California, USA There are indeed fearful things lurking upon the earth: rabid dogs, drunken soliders, dragons and automobiles, electrical appliances and high interest rates. The tenth man is aware, quiet and suffering needlessly... Jenny has a boyfriend and he's coming to town . The Whistle Pigs Santa Cruz, California, USA If Smashing Pumpkins went tribal, grabbed Primus and said, "Play more distorted bluegrass." They Were Everett, Washington, USA Treehouse Miami, Florida, USA University of Miami, Jazz Improvisation college kids' hit song in clubs throughout Miami. UDM Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Industrial techno-rave from Philadelphia label Fresh Records. Ugly Mugs Santa Cruz, California, USA Described as "punk crossed with Frank Zappa," these guys have neglected good taste to bring you some new and bizarre tunes. Arbeit Macht Frei is pronounced something like "are-bite mockt fry" and deals with parallels between the old Nazi Germany and modern day America. Victor, David San Ramon, California, USA "Sometimes you just wanna rock." Vinyl Devotion San Francisco, California, USA Vinyl Devotion is an alternative rock band founded by singer/songwriter/guitarist Shalini Chatterjee in 1992. All typos are (c) 1994 by Alan Ezust --- Loreena McKennitt's international success has surprised many people in the busic "business" but it has not surprised thousands of fans in Canada (her homeland), throughout the United States, in Europe, and around the world. Certainly, her career has blossomed in ways she could not have imagined when she begun her musical training as a child. Her fourth album, The Visit, - released in 41 countries - has sold more than half a million copies, and her new album, The Mask and Mirror, (released February 1994) has already found its way from record store shelves into more than 300,000 homes in its initial two months. From Morden, a small town on the edge of Canada's Prairies, McKennitt first planned a career as a veterinarian. However, her first professional work was as a singer in small clubs and in musical theatre; she moved to Stratford, Ontario in the early 80s, and worked as a composed, actor and singer at the famed Shakespearean Festival. In Toronto, the nearest big city, she earned a reputation busking outside local markets. By 1985, however, she was representing Canada at Expo in Japan and during Canada Week in Paris; as well as her theatre work, she was writing music for films and starting to perform at folk festivals and small concert venues. She came to wider attention after the release of her first self-produced record, Elemental, in 1985, and began to build a significant following. The album, which has since sold more than 60,000 copies, was followed two years later by a collection of Christmas and winter songs called To Drive the Cold Winter Away; despite the seasonal nature of the record and the unusual carols and songs she chose for it, it has sold consistently well in Canada. Both records were released on her own label, Quinlan Road, and she managed her own business - either at her kitchen table, or, later, from a small office a block away from her practice stuido. Her third album, Parallel Dreams, was a breakthrough; enthusiastic reviews came from across Canada, the United States, Britain and Europe. Released in December 1989, it has since sold over 100,000 copies in Canada and it established her as a major figure in her homeland. It was followed by a seemingly endless series of concert appearances across canada. With the release in the Fall of '91 of The Visit, she reached an agreememnt with Warner Music Canada which allowed the new album (and her back catalogue) to be distributed on a much more extensive national basis in Canada, and opened the door for the release of the album on Warner Music International labels around the world. The Visit has won a double platnium award in Canada, achieved gold status in Spain and sold more than 200,000 copies in the United States. At the Juno Awards - Canada's equivalent of the Grammy Awards in the US - the record was voted Best Roots/Traditional album. On the road and on the radio Since The Visit was released Loreena has travelled widely. In the autumn of '91 she performed in no less than 32 Canadian cities, attracting sold-out crowds and countless standing ovations. There was the first full-fledged tour with the band in Spain in 1992 (she returned again, in bigger halls and to even larger audiences, early this year), concerts in London, Dublin and Lisbon. In the period since, she also played events as geographically and musically different as the Gloastonbury Festival in England and the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in Colorado. As if the pressure of her concert schedule was not enough, she also completed the score for the third in a series of films for the National Film Board of Canada - The Godess Remembered, The Burning Times, and Full Circle. The Mask and Mirror: a New Album The last four months of 1993, and the first two months of this year, were occupied with the creation of McKennitt's fifth album, the Mask and Mirror, partly recorded in her farmhouse near Stratford, and partly recorded in Toronto and Peter Gabriel's studio near Bath, England. The Mask and Mirror has largely been inspired by her travels in North Africa and Spain; once again Loreena has written the musical settings; and once again worked on the record with her guitarist, Brian Hughes, and the musicians with whom she travels on tour. Once more listeners may expect to find some words from the well-known lyricist William Shakespeare; a new touchstone is a poem by the Spanish mystic, St. John of the Cross. And her audience grows around the world, the trappings of celebrity leave her untouched. Loreena McKennitt remains firmly in control of her own career - her own business, her own concert appearances, and the recordings that bring her into so many homes. As she tours in Europe and the United States and at home in Canada - she finds deep satisfaction in meeting the people who enjoy her music. Yes, _HaM_ (love these acronyms!) is her first solo album, unless you count _Red Heaven_, which was released under the Throwing Muses name after Tanya Donelly had already left to form Belly. A quickie Throwing Muses discography: _Throwing Muses_ -- their debut, an EP I believe. I haven't tracked this one down yet. _House Tornado_ -- the words "skewed" and "quirky" come instantly to mind when I think of this album, but it definitely grows on you if you give it a chance. _Hunkpapa_ -- my favorite TM album, where Kristen's experimentalism and Tanya's pop leanings played off each other perfectly. _The Real Ramona_ -- similar in style to _Hunkpapa_, just not *quite* as good IMHO. _Red Heaven_ -- I haven't bought this, due to the storm of critical indifference that greeted its release. Anyone else out there think that neither Kristen or Tanya is as exciting "on their own" as they were when working together, or am I just missing key brain parts like Neile? :) Ethan ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 25 Apr 94 13:13:43 EDT From: woj@remus.rutgers.edu (uffda!) Could have done with less songs from Pretty Hate Machine, and more from The Downward Spiral, but overall this was one of the loudest, angriest, and most enjoyable concerts I have attended. Angelos Moral of the week: Never *ever* make nonrefundable airplane ticket purchases before you check out the listings. I made the mistake of calling United and buying my ticket to Boston before looking at the Pink Pages of the Sunday Examiner, and decided to take the red eye out of SF on May 24th, instead of the morning flight on the 25th. I'm a bit tight for cash and need to work out which option would be cheapest for me to come to the sunny UK next week. Basically it hinges on trains and connections between ferries and Cambridge/London etc. I can get a ferry from Vlissingen to Sheerness for f53 return (~20 pounds), and a train to Vlissingen for f44 return (16 pounds). I then need to get to Cambridge which I don't know the cost of. The second option is to get to Harwich (via Hoek van Holland) voor f152 (56 pounds) and get from Harwich to Cambridge, which I also don't know the cost of. Coud somebody in England please let me know what the respective costs are for Sheerness/Cambridge and Harwich/Cambridge so that I can make my decision?? Another option is to go straight to London, but then I would miss the Ecto Party which I really don't want to do!! All help will be very very very appreciated!! Yours with baited breath ...
