This song was the hands down highlight of the Maniacs last pass through San Diego. It was the final song they played. As the band walked off the stage, Nathalie sat down at the piano and started to play this. It was so haunting and beautiful. The crowd had never heard it before (so they couldn't sing along to every word) and in one of those rare moments, was so taken that they just sat quietly and listened. The piano faded away, and Nathalies voice continued on. Eventually, she got up and wandered offstage, but sang on from sights unseen. It was definitely one of those completely magical concert moments (and actually the second one provided to me by 10K Maniacs.) A query to ecto gave Iris DeMent as the composer of the song. So, I went and saw her when she came to town. I still haven't heard a disc, but I have to say I was in the "drive a body up the wall" contingent. She was very likable and friendly, and I'd find myself warming up to her as she talked between songs, but once she started playing, .... It is one of the few shows I have ever left early from. (I'd still like to hear her album though.) I waited for "Let the Mystery Be", but didn't really care for how she sang it. The evening wasn't a total loss though, as it was my first introduction to Jewel Kilcher, the local woman I have to rave about tediously every once in a while. No album yet, but I have at least 6 hours of tape! Oh, and there is a 10K Maniacs single, the one with Too SIr With Love, that has a version of Let the Mystery Be on it. It has David Byrne singing with the full band playing and is ok, but definitely no more. Vickie, do you consider |Nanci to be "hybrid" of folk and country, or another hybridization? I ***love*** Nanci Griffith and I have no idea why. Well that's not entirely true... I love her style, her arrangements, her inherent melancholy and dumb, dim, almost facetious hopefulness. I love the way she performs. You just *have* to see her live. She can do *no* wrong, even with the sappiest of sap (like From a Distance). Is she a hybrid? Well, as a rule I hate mindless country [what's even more annoying these days is the pounding crap they play in those C&W bars that they do those pathetic line dances to... can you tell I'd rather spew up my lunch than listen to this weak excuse for sound waves?]... Nanci plays antithetically to most country I'm familiar with: intelligent, wise, interesting. I too have a not so high opinion of tori video except that I *love* silent all these years, and the new one (god). Her live videos aren't as good as the produced ones. As for folk music, it's too bad you missed David Wilcox because he was *amazing*. I might drive up to Beloit to see Ani Defranco and Dar Williams (both superb) and you are welcome to come if you like... it'll be an adventure (for me at least...). As for Michelle Shocked: big thumbs up. Have you seen her live? Great. Although, the first time I saw her, when she was still unknown and rough around the edges and really gritty (opened for Billy Bragg in 1989 or so) was far and away the best. The Holly Cole Trio have 3 albums and an EP "GirlTalk" "Blame It On My Youth" "Don't Smoke In Bed" "Christmas Blues" CD I think DSIB is the best yet, though they all have shining moments within. > (ohno, conan is implying that jazz is becoming "in"... trendy... > aieee.... i mean, i'm glad, but i'm not, but i'm sick of hearing harry > connick jr even tho i do like him, but... it's late and i'm babbling and > be glad i'm not on #ecto harassing people..... ;-p) I'm so glad to hear you liked Holly. I have to admit that I was a bit worried at what people would think. It was certainly strange! She actually looked and sounded a bit spacey and out-of-it. For concerts, she usually spends a lot of time and effort on her appearance. On Conan though, her dress was ill-fitting and (to me) ugly (compared to the other ravishing outfits I've seen her in) and her hair...eeks! Chris and I joked that Mary Margaret O'Hara did her hair for the show. It was stringy and messy and poufy and weird. Plus, she either wasn't wearing any makeup or it didn't show up well on television. She just looked pale and spacey. Now, don't get me wrong...appearances don't matter to me, it's just that every other time we've seen her she takes *great* pains to look like a jazz vocal diva extrodinaire, so we were curious as to why she didn't seem to care what she looked like for a national television audience. None of that would matter if the song they had performed had shown off Holly's voice, but "Get Outta Town" isn't that song. It's a nice song, but doesn't showcase the "Holly belt" that others do. The whole performance was subdued and very laid-back. Maybe she was saving her voice for Carnegie hall the next night :-). As nice as it was to see her, I have to admit that I was kinda disappointed with the whole thing. Ah well, bitchbitchbitch :-), it was Holly Cole! On national TV! And at least one person (thanks Laurel) was intrigued enough to watch it and ask about her, which is a Good Thing! (sorry I didn't answer this earlier...I thought I had...ooops) All the excitement of Holly on Conan, getting the windfall, and booking the trip to England, we plumb forgot about Bjork on Leno :-(. Anyone see it? How was it and what did she sing? > anything happening with the ecto mud idea? (of people on ecto > gravitating to one mud and building something there....) It's sort of bitten the dust, I believe :-(. Jeffy, if after I listen to my copy again and it still doesn't grab me, and if Carla is neutral about it too (which may be a different story, I think she likes Heidi better than I do), I'll bring my copy *and* that abysmal Sheryl Crow CD and unload them on you when I visit, ok? For those of you who like Sheryl, I'm kidding about her being abysmal. She's just one of those who IMHO isn't particularly original. My first impression upon hearing her CD is that it was the same sort of stuff I'd heard during my college years but not done nearly as well. Of course, some of those years were spent in a pot-induced haze so maybe my judgment about what was really good music is questionable. And perhaps I'm still suffering from that loss of brain cells which is preventing me from truly enjoying Heidi's music. :-) -- Cathy Guetzlaff Cray Research, Inc. guetzlaf@cray.com ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 19 Apr 94 8:30:27 PDT From: "John Relph" Subject: Re: sam phillips eric jensen asks: > >wondering if anyone has heard the new sam phillips album yet. if so, >what is it like? I have been enjoying this album, _Martinis & Bikinis_ for a few weeks now, and I must say it is excellent. The music is somewhat psychadelicized, reminiscent of The Beatles' _Rubber Soul_ and _Revolver_ at times. The songs are quite good, the music retro without being stale, and the lyrics are very good as well. The title track is a laugh and a half. I also like this phrase from "Fighting With Fire": `I'm not above him but I want to go / Down below the surface where he lives / Fighting with fire', full of metaphoric substance, she could be talking about the devil or about the shallow businessman. "Same Changes" is a solid pop song, co-written with T Bone Burnett, Sam Phillips' husband. "I Need Love" is a song about faith (not religion), and "Wheel of the Broken Voice" was stuck in my head all last week while I was working in Washington DC. Colin Moulding of XTC plays bass on much of this album, sharing the duties with Jerry Scheff. The album was produced by T Bone and I wouldn't complain if he were offered the chance to produce an XTC album. _Martinis & Bikinis_ is definitely at the top of my personal playlist at the moment. -- John ======================================================================== From: snpf@lucid.com (Sarah Noelle Pratt Ferguson) Subject: hi Date: Tue, 19 Apr 1994 08:32:02 -0700 (PDT) Hi! I have some form of brain loss that makes me unable to find anything of interest in Heidi Berry. It makes Milla just barely a keeper at this point. It keeps me way far away from Nanci Griffith and Iris DeMent and co. It makes very little of Cocteau Twins or Dead Can Dance interesting to me, and makes much of their music simply annoying. I am just very pleased that it allows such joys as Happy and Tori and Jane and Moon Seven Times and and and. It also allows me to like all of Joni Mitchell's early and middle jazzy stuff up to _Wild Things Run Fast_ when Larry Klein seriously entered her life. I think _Hejira_ and _The Hissing of Summer Lawns_ are two of the best albums ever. I also quite like _Mingus_, which we just found cheaply on disc after only having a tape dub for years and years. Pesky little brain loss, isn't it? --Neile neile@u.washington.edu ======================================================================== From: Stuart Myerburg Date: Tue, 19 Apr 94 12:09:55 -0500 Subject: Re: Holly Cole Trio... How was it and what did she sing? I saw it. She sang "Big Time Sensuality" and I thought it was a very good performance. The music part was just OK since "BTS" isn't the kind of song that really lends itself to live performance. But Bjork's vocals were great. My only complaint was that at the beginning of the show, Leno referred to Bjork as an internationally-renowned (or something equally cheesy) *group*. Thankfully, he corrected himself when he finally introduced her.
