Gifts were thrown haphazardly into the crowd. Lynn Canfield wore a leg brace and used a cane for reasons which were never adequately explained. A mini-newsletter was distributed listing the band's 4AD cover song as "Michelle", and announcing that they also appear on the _Heavenly Voices_ compilation cd, performing "Giannis", and providing ordering info (available upon request). The band also performed several songs, and were videotaped, perhaps for later release. The Author made plans to buy _7=49_ ASAP. Indeed, that song is on Yanni's album _Dare to Dream_. It's not just "a similar piece", it's the SAME piece. Same lead singer (Mona Lisa), same arrangement, and it's produced by Malcolm McLaren and Yanni. _Dare to Dream_'s not a bad album, though it has its syrupy sections. It's really too bad that Yanni has gotten on this "romantic" kick; he used to be pretty cool. His first album on Private Music, _Keys to Imagination_, is one of my favorites. I attribute his turn-for-the-worse, musically, to the insidious influence of Linda Evans. :) D^2 ======================================================================== Date: Sun, 17 Apr 1994 16:28:38 -0700 (PDT) From: David Dixon Subject: Re: return of the Man from B.E.T.T.Y. It's a double live album (and video) covering her whole career up till then, with the world's greatest jazz-rock band. If memory serves (I'm several thousand miles from my copy at the moment): Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Jaco Pastorius, Michael Brecker, Don Um Romao, and ... um... I can't remember the drummer (Peter Erskine? Steve Gadd? I know I'll whack myself in the head and go "duh!" when I remember). Unparalleled playing, with incredible songs -- she's one of the few songwriters the construction of whose songs utterly pleases and baffles me. Does anyone know why this happens? The most common reason for this is that the subscription magazines have different zones (either geographic or demographic). Zoning is primarily for the advertiser's benefit, but the zoned sections might end up with different advertising/editorial ratios (depending on ad sales in the zone). The varying ad/edit ratios could force the magazine to remove or substiute some articles.... Glad you asked!! * \ > | * / Well, when it really comes down to it, I don't know how to describe her. I've never been good at description, which I see as the primary flaw in the idea of my becoming a writer. Let me start with her voice. She has two distinct voices, instead of a continuous range, which might be considered a flaw. Her lower range, now that I've listened to the latter artist, I can honestly say resembles Melissa Ferrick's voice. Michele's upper range, on the other hand, I consider to have the essence of the oft-used word (on this mailing list) 'ethereal'. I believe that is an adequate description of tonal quality. As for voice strength: the comparison to Melissa Ferrick is true again; she has a very strong voice here. However, in the upper regime, her voice strength varies somewhat. It can be wispy and it can be reasonably strong. I'm afraid that sometimes, it seems, this last factor isn't entirely in her control. Her music is, I guess, 'alternative', or at least it has been called such. I've never been one who was able to discern the boundaries of society's labels. It is band-based: electric guitar, bass guitar, keyboardist, drummer, and the recent addition of a backup singer. Except with that constraint, I would say that her music flows in and out of several categories. Some songs have a strong 'torch-song' quality to them, others are more bouncy and pop-like, and some just plain rock! Some might even be considered weird, but weird is normal to me anymore, so I can't tell. The subject matter of her songs is fairly normal. Many deal with relationships. Usually, though, she deals with endings of relationships, as torchsongs do. I've noticed the word 'misery' pop up in a few of her songs. She has also written songs about home, thinking about someone she doesn't like, finally giving up on someone who will not notice her and saying she has 'better things to do', a woman who stays in an abusive relationship because she thinks she deserves it, etc. She also has some interesting imagery, such as in a song called 'Skin' where she seems to be describing the process of ripping into someone's flesh; I assume it to be metaphoric for getting to know someone--I haven't asked her. Running with the idea that a singer's influences say something about a singer's music, I here list the artists she has covered, either in recording or just at her gigs: Prince (two songs), the Smiths ('Jean'), Tim Buckley ('Song to the Siren' and 'I Must Have Been Blind'. Yes, these are both songs that were covered by This Mortal Coil. Yes, that is where she heard them. She says that she hasn't even heard the originals.), and a torchsong called 'Willow Weep For Me', of whose authorship I am unsure. She thinks that Kate is weird, but she is a fan of Jane, so I don't know why. She has also said that she likes the Cocteau Twins. She thinks Tori's voice is kind of weak. Well, I guess Michele isn't perfect. If any of this sounds good to you, this is the point where I must disappoint you. She is very much a local artist. By this, I mean that I am not even sure if she is distributed out of Austin. She has had three releases, including two tapes, and one CD. The first tape is out of print or whatever, and there is, I am sure, only a limited supply of the second tape. There should still be plenty of the CD. Much of it is a rehash of already released songs, some of them redone, and a few new songs. IMHO, I think the tapes were better than the CD, productionwise. Too, she decided to redo a truly beautiful song called 'Frozen Lullabies' from the first tape, slowing it down until it seems very lethargic. This song is one of my favorites, and IMHO (again) could be considered the posterchild for 'ethereal'. It will likely be my contribution to the HGP, if you guys are still doing that. If anybody is interested, I could always serve as a distributor in the next five weeks. I'm really going to miss going to see her. My last chance to see her is this next Saturday, and you can be damn sure that I'm not going to miss it! One more thing before I finally shut up. I just completed a Happy compilation to give to Michele. I really do hope that she will enjoy it... John H.
