Last Tuesday Tori played in Frankfurt's Alte Oper. Ilka and I managed to talk to her for a few moments (well, Ilka did the talking, I just listened...) and Tori told us to say she loves us all 8-). At about 20:30 a group called 'The Divine Comedy' came on stage and played for about half an hour. If they (Yamana Clavinova, violin, acoustic guitar & male voice, cello) had a female voice I would REALLY recommend them. So I only recommend them for people (unlike me) who do like male voices. 'MalEcto' stuff... Oh, they played a very interesting version of Kraftwerk's The Model which was received very well and which the singer commented as being 'just such an easy song'. Our seats were first row, but they would have been WAY better if the concert would not have been rescheduled from the Mozartsaal (a few hundred's audience) to the Grosse Saal (2500 people, sold out). In the Mozartsaal seats 4-6 in front row would have been slightly left to the middle, in one word 'perfect'. In the Grossen Saal they were about 7 1/2 meters farther to the left, and so we saw Tori's back most of the time. Well, that was much more than those poor guys 30-40m away in the balcony could see. I shouldn't complain. Of course Tori herself (she did appear at about 9:40 and played for ca. 80 minutes) was wonderful, or at least as wonderful as it can get with an audience of 2500 people. I'd say it did work as good as possible with that big a crowd. Unfortunately about 1 in 500 people going to a Tori concert believes s/he has to yell out in bad moments. So there were about 5 people there who didn't know how to behave. But it wasn't too bad, more than half of the songs came through completely undisturbed and the others suffered from maybe one Yyyiiieaouuu!!!. Ilka wrote down the songs Tori played, I'm sure she already posted it. From what I read here it was a pretty standard playlist. No introduction to God, Cornflake Girl as the first encore, Bells For Her with the prepared piano (of course to the right of the stage :-/ - does anyone else have the impression that the prepared piano sounds different on stage than in the studio?). Does anyone know how closely related the piano introduction to Space Dog belongs to the song itself? Is it always played beforehand? Tori was not very talkative, only one (the virginity) story, no introduction to any of the songs. Two encores. Does anyone know why Tori plays that many songs from Little Earthquakes and not way more from her recent album? What I didn't like too much was the sound system. It was noisy, like a normal cassette tape deck. Maybe I was only able to tell because I was about 2 meters away from the speakers (not too loud, but close). Especially in the softer passages the noise was a bit disturbing. I'd LOVE to have a Toriconcert without any amplification one day. Audience of 10 people probably... Something else I didn't like was the backing tape of God and Cornflake Girl. It just didn't fit in very well (besides the fact that you could still hear some Bosey while Tori's hands were way above the keyboard...). It's not that I won't like Tori touring with a band, but the mixture between pure acoustic songs and those two upbeat ones was a bit disturbing. I'd say either complete Tori+piano or complete Tori+piano+band, but not only two songs with (taped) band. Can someone tell me why I find that many things to complain about? I LOVED THE CONCERT!!! After the concert Ilka, Pete (her boyfriend), me and about 30-40 other people went to the backstage entrance and waited for about 45 minutes for Tori to appear. When she finally did about 20 people were left. She needed about 1 minute for the 8 meters to her car, so this wasn't too talkative again. The 'sorry, no time today' was announced beforehand, but anyway... just to say goodbye. Bye, Uli P.S.: We took some gooooorgeous pictures, without flash, with approval, and without disturbing anyone. Pictures without approval would have been impossible. Sorry, no scanner around here. P.P.S.: 1600 ASA and good light in my case, the same plus 3200 ASA black&white and good light in Ilka's case. Haven't seen her pics yet. -- "Mann, was glaubst'n Du, was das fuer 'ne Rechenleistung is?" - "'n 66'er, _mindestens_" (2*anon, CeBIT '94, SGI booth, Onyx/PowerChallenge presentation) ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 14 Apr 94 22:38:11 EDT From: woj@remus.rutgers.edu (throttled by meredith) Subject: anyone hear this yet? >From: C Notes >Subject: The Mother Station > >Just heard an advance cassette of a new band called The Mother Station. Y'know, I don't watch that much television, but I must say that "Frasier", the "Cheers" spinoff that I regarded dubiously in the beginning, is really quite well done. That and "Seinfeld" make for a brilliantly funny hour... I recommend checking it out if you can. Ethan opined: >Tori Amos - "Pretty Good Year" CD5's. Tori's one of the few people >for whom I'll shell out $20 for three new tracks, and she hasn't >disappointed me yet. "Honey" is the best B-side she's put out yet for >_Under the Pink_...if it had been on the album it easily would have >been my third favorite song. Hear, hear!!! "Honey" grabbed me from the first note of the first listen. The music flows like, well, honey, and the acoustic guitar is just yummy. I would even go so far as to say it's the best b-side she's put out yet - even better than "Flying Dutchman", gasp! >The Cranberries - "Dreams" CD5. One B-side which is nothing special, >two live versions. I had to have this just for the live version of >"Pretty," which gets me more than such a simple little tune has any >right to. ("Waltzing Back" is the other live track.) I bought this over the weekend, but haven't listened to it yet. My roommate did, though, and he liked it. My other purchases over the weekend have been taking up too much of my time. I finally got Anonymous 4's _An English Ladymass_, which is a must for anyone who is even vaguely interested in Medieval music. This is Medieval polyphony at its best, and the whole disc is achingly, hauntingly beautiful. I've gone to sleep to it all week. Sigh. I also finally tracked down a reasonably priced copy of the soundtrack to _Tous les Matins du Monde_. I don't know much of Marais, but I want to know more! I missed the movie when it played here, though - anyone know if it's out on video yet? Finally, I found a copy of the Golden Palominos' _Drunk With Passion_ for $3. Please humor me and go back and get the Heidi Berry for keeps, okay? If after three weeks or so you decide you really don't want it, let me know and I'll buy it from you at cost plus postage. I'm serious- I've been meaning to get my parents a copy of their own anyway, and if it doesn't work out for you, I know I'll be able to give the disc a good home. >Jessica moving to the west coast hopefully will start a trend for ECTO >folk. I heard from more than one source that MTV hadn't picked up the video -- maybe they showed it once and decided that was enough, like they seem to have done with Kate's "Eat The Music" and "And So Is Love". In any event, I sit corrected. Valerie defended her sterling honor: >Hmm..for honor's sake, I feel compelled to respond. No, I didn't buy it. Wow. Bits 'o News from Kevin I called H&K to remind them of Holly Cole and talked to Kevin for a minute. Happy's "I Say" will be on an upcoming compilation CD called "Alternative Woodstock" which features lots of different Woodstock area artists. Kevin thought that there would be about 17 total artists on the CD. It's due to be released on May 17, and it should be a nationwide release. I don't know label or catalogue number at this time. It should be pretty good exposure for her! Second, Kevin has comfirmed a live date for August. Happy will be playing a place called Joyous Lake (?I'll get more details) in Woodstock on August 11. It's the Thursday before the Saturday of the big Woodstock festival, so there should be a lot (a *LOT*) of people hanging around the town then. If anyone's interested in going, I'll try to find out if tickets will be sold in advance. The place will surely be packed to the gills. Kevin is working feverishly to get Happy booked at one of the two big Woodstock festivals. He's holding out more hope for the one nearest Woodstock, which is *not* the original site (whats-his-names farm), but *is* being put on by the original people. It's all confusing, but the one they're working on for Happy should be the bigger and better one. They go into the studio next week to begin recording...(really this time!) Even if Happy could go to England (doubtful, since she'll be recording) Kevin couldn't go with her, because he doesn't have a passport :-(. I did talk Kevin into sending some Happy cassettes for me to pass around at the convention. *Some* happyvangelizing will get done there :-) This post should have come before my "going to England" post :-)...blame it on excitement... I had my Happy Sample tape in hand as well as Anthony Horan's review of "Bohemia", my CD booklet and a transcript of an irc session from Wednesday 4/13 w/questions for Mae. The first person I encountered was Rick May her Bass player he directed me to the Road Manager who brought Joanne and I in to talk w/Mae. He closed the door while we waited outside and she asked if the tape was of me, I stuck my head in and told her it was for her listening pleasure and then informed her about Happy and told her I thought she would enjoy it. We were invited in. Mae is a really upbeat and interesting person to talk to. I then told her about ecto and gave her Anthony's review she said the name sounded familiar (hmm). France Gall's greatest hits -- she was mentioned once a long time ago on gaffa by the original ed (suranyi) and I was curious... this stuff is pretty good. I can definitely see a comparison to early, theatrical Kate Bush, TKI era or even Tour of Life. Barenaked Ladies - Gordon -- this is now available domestically, but the price was good. I still like Moxy Fruvous better, but this disk has a few special moments too: He's not the King of Bedside Manner, Brian Wilson, and my two faves, wrap your arms around me, and Box Set (very very poignant with a capital P). And they are good musicians with an interesting sound and style... just gimme some'a that groundbreaking canadian innovation, baby. Shuffle Demons - picked up a couple of their disks -- groovy jazz funk pop -- fun covers of some unlikely tunes like the wreck of the e fitzgerald and the hawaii 5-0 theme. Still looking for spadina bus :-) Red Rider -- over 60 minutes with -- with knock me over the head I just love this music. My fave has always been White Hot, but Power and some others are equally great. Victoria Williams - Happy Come Home -- it was on sale so I bought it. Man, this is zippy stuff. I like it quite a good deal better than her 2nd album. I only listened to it once but definitely want to hear it again. (That's the problem with buying 15 cd's at a time - you barely absorb any of them -- this world fast paced? -- but you know what, I love it anyways...) Now I'm almost ready to hear the covers. Back to the Garden -- Joni MItchell Tribute -- definitely some fine tracks on here. Gotta love Kurt Swinghammer (his name, that is -- though he seems to design covers too!). Philadelphia - Soundtrack -- I haven't seen this mentioned here yet. This is a must have for me because it has fantastic songs by 3 of my favorite MALE (gasp!) artists: the Boss, PG, and NY. I *LLLLOOOOVVVVEEE* it that Bruce won an Ack Award but the song is *so* good. As is the Neil Young song. And ditto for LoveTown (Gabriel). The album also has the Indigo Girls doing everyone's favorite cover tune, I Don't Wanna Talk about It (I still like EBTG's version best and Rod the Mod's the least), a Sade song, some opera (Callas), etc. Well worth the price of admission... and I've yet to see the movie. :-) Loreena McKennit - yes indeed after hearing 2 songs I know this is good, but shave my face and bite my fingers I haven't gotten around to listening all the way thru yet (shame on me). Sarah M - FtE - had a tape of it from the cd I sent klaus but now i've got the cd again. Meth, count me as one who instantly loved it (remember?) -- definitely better than Solace. Touch is still so unique and different that it seems like a completely different artist. 5440 - a poppy but good canadian group my brother intro'd me to. I can't think of the others offhand, but here some I got here: Tori's latest 2 ripoffs - Well, I'll admit the songs are good, but I agree with Alan that the marketing sucks big donkey dicks in the sky. Am I slave to fashion, or what? Ecto do as ecto say. Octavox -- my latest a cappella discovery on route to bolstering my burgeoning a cappella collection. Swedish octet of singers with some instruments and 3 all-a cappella tracks. I love the funny soundin' lyrics :-). And it's pretty fresh-sounding too. Ickky dinky diggy dink. Anyone want to translate the liner notes? Noa -- no CD but I did see her *live* in Chicago last night. She is one sweet talented girl from Brooklyn/Israel/Yemen. Very pure voice which goes three ways --- sappy incisive american new folkish songs, new israeli style music (with lots of neat changes), and trad. yemen music with all the squealing and yelping. It was just her and her guitar-boy, who was quite skilled himself. The hilight was this very quickly spoken hebrew micro-theatre thing she did using a clown-shawl. Very very slick. And she can play the bongos to boot. I now know why she's the hottest thing going in Israel. Her 3rd album, she says, is slated for a big international release effort on Geffen (which translates into grape in Hebrew making it one of those transcontinental puns that we all are so fond of, yes?). A must see live when she tours (and she will tour). David Wilcox, The Billy's -- saw them live (already mentioned this) -- what a great show. He played THIRTY TWO songs! In 32 different tunings! :-) Val, if you want to hear Mylene Farmer, give me a shout. I also have some of her videos (and you thought Kate Bush had a strange sense-of-humor!!). Woj, I'm still waiting for a review of Maestro Subgum. :-) Jessica -- happy trails! The smoking thing- when NPR came out with the 13-ingredient leak, I almost puked in my car. It is so heinous that Orange Juice has more restrictions than cigs, that I cannot bear to read about it anymore. Now there's an incindiery topic. Wish I could attend to KT Con in England but I'll be in happening Racine WI for a wedding instead... any ectophiles in Racine? :-) See y'all at Sarah. -mjm ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr. There is an INDEX file explaining what is where. Feel free to send me things you'd like to have added. -- jessica (jessica@ns1.rutgers.edu)
