We're twins, so I wanted to do something special. I was also the best man. Since I wanted to ask Karen to marry me anyway, I figured that that day would be it. So I called up Bill & Jen and asked them if it was OK. This was about a month ahead of time. That whole time people would ask me if I had my 'best man speech' ready. SInce there was a lot of discussion in the past about the upcoming Interview with a Vampire film, I thought I would share this little tidbit that I stumbled across in a very strange way. One of the woman on the tour was from New Orleans, and she and friends went to the open call for extras for the movie. THey all had their pictures taken, and then someone approached her husband, who was just hanging out, and asked him if he'd like to have his picture taken too. They were only advertising for women extras, but he said sure, why not. Some time later, they were filming a scene that involved a huge gathering of relatives having a big party and dancing and stuff. All the relatives were "pretty people". THe director commented that no one ever has a family gathering that includes all beautiful people and they needed more realistic relatives. In the quest for a "stout" uncle, this woman's husband got called in and ended up quite visible in the scene. Of my memory the best (as in 'more consistently funny') comedy > show on English-Canadian TV. The Kids (in the Hall) aren't too bad, but > sometimes they're dull. Oh, boy, do I remember them! :) I started listening to them when they were still called Frantic Times and were just on the radio; when they recorded their shows live at the Ontario College of Art. They moved later into TV with their show Four on the Floor, but never went very far. Shame, really. Mr Canoehead was a cute invention... they could be quite fun. What are their members up to these days? I know Rick Green does that TVO show Prisoners of Gravity aimed at the sf convention / comic-book collecting / geek set, which is sometimes interesting. I have to agree with your feelings concerning The Kids in the Hall, though. Maybe they're more commercially successful than the Frantics ever were as they're far more extreme and over the top, but they're nowhere near as consistent as the Frantics usually were. And it's a *fact*! :) Then there are shows like SNL on American TV, which are also consistent in their own way. The first 5-10 minutes are usually okay, but then it steadily gets more and more boring until the end when there are twice as many minutes of commercials for every minute of show anyway... Anyway, back to our irregularly scheduled program... - Neil K. -- 49N 16' 123W 7' / Vancouver, BC, Canada / neil_k_guy@sfu.ca ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 5 Apr 1994 11:58:30 -0700 (PDT) From: Ectophiles Guide Subject: Re: ingrid karklins Speaking of Ingrid Karklins, this weekend I found a vinyl copy of her early Grimalkin work. Hutchinson" Subject: philip glass new versus old Date: Tue, 5 Apr 94 14:50:32 EDT According to the book in the new cd: ". . .Why then, a new version? There are several reasons, according to Glass. "To begin with the new recording is 190 minutes long, as opposed to some 160 minutes in 1978. . . . We were prisoners of the technology of the time and could only fit so much music on an LP side. The CD has changed everything. And legnth is not a trivial matter in a prformance of Einstein but very much a part of the total experience." "And we just play the music so much more skillfully than we could back in the 70's. Back then, we were just learning the style. I imagine that the first performance of Einstein was probably a total mess bue everything was so unusual and so new that nobody noticed. We were on a limited budget, so we had to hire singers who could also move and dancers who could also sing. Our chorus this time around is far superior to that on the first recording. Moreover, synthesizer technology has improved so enormously that we are able to create a more beautiful, sensual sound than we could have dreamed in 1978." Little has changed in the music itself. Richard Peck's squalling sax improvisation in the "Building" movement hasas been replaced with what Glass calls a "very lyrical, bluesy solo." There is a new violinist (Gregory Fulkerson) on this recording and a new soprano (Patricia Schuman). Most ofthe speeches are the same, (the late Samuel Johnson's "All Men are Equal" replaces his origional "Paris" text and a new actor , Jasper McGruder, has taken over Johnson's small but crucial role s) and Lucinda Childs and Sheryl Sutton are ] back to recreate their speaking parts." And, it has a much cleaner sound (IMHO). Agreed completely, woj - I made similar remarks both on rdt and in Beat Magazine after seeing her live here last time. The solo performances are great, but (and if I said this on rdt, I'd be flamed to an early grave, as it seems this is the most horrible thing Tori could do...) if she got a band behind her, the power of songs like "Tear In Your Hand", and "Precious Things" would have been even greater, not lessened. I think this'll be inevitable anyway, as her popularity grows. > >i practically only listen to donnie iris in my car with my sunroof open > >on hot summer days. > > ah-li-li! hear we go again! I wanted to save mentioning this until tomorrow when I have more time, but just quickly, this arrived today (thanks Don!) and I love it so far; the band are progressing into slightly different territory here, I feel, and that seems to be reflected by the change in mixing duties (Henry Frayne co-mixed the first CD, Brendan Gamble the new one) and the mix is dirtier and less ethereal. This put me off at first, but by the time I got to track 6 ("My Game", complete with a wonderful guitar solo of doom) I was sold. "John" is wonderful too, and "The Pavement Shines" is another immediate favorite. Henry, you've done it again. Pick this album up, you lucky Americans, you. Greetings again, ectophiles. I'm hoping to impose on the West Coast members of this list for some information. I will be doing a 10-day business trip to Palo Alto this month (13-23 April), and I was hoping to find out if there are any cool things on the schedule while I'll be there. If anyone knows of any ecto-friendly concerts or other events, I'd really love a pointer, especially for things over the weekend. (During the week, I'm usually so wiped out that foraging for dinner is a challenge, but maybe the prospect of something more fun than dinner would help!) I hope you guys don't mind my occasional postings like this, but unless I get smacked, I probably will ask for other trips, too. I just got back from Boston, where I went without asking, and I missed a whole buncha good things -- including the Proclaimers and the Indigo Girls -- because I didn't know it was happening until tickets were all gone.
