(We did get to >hear Tori's rendition of "Ring My Bell", though!) ?!? What's that rendition and where did it come from? (of course, how can I be any sort of completist when I don't even have all the official 'n relatively easy to find B-sides yet...) I'll never forget driving home from the Philly concert on Sunday morning and hearing "In Hiding" on WXPN. It was kind of sad driving home after an incredible experience, and hearing the song really helped... >How were they? woj, Valerie and I had to take off a bit early to >make sure we had time to grab dinner and find the American >University for the Maniacs show, so we seem to have missed Betty, >Tribe, and disappear fear. (Didn't miss Margie Adam, though. >Ugh. :P) I was disappointed that we only got one song each from >Melissa Etheridge and Indigo Girls, but it's better than nothing! I believe disappear fear and Tribe only played on the Morning stage. (BTW, how can I get in touch with Val? She offered me that Tribe CD but I never gave her my address!). Betty was a SCREAM. They walked out and sang "Hi, we're Betty" as they always do. Those few of us In The Know yelled back "Hello, Betty!" Amy (I think) then said, "Okay, apparently some of you don't know this, but when we walk on stage and say 'Hi, we're Betty,' you're supposed to say 'Hello, Betty!'. Let's try this again." "Hi, we're Betty." Much better response from the crowd, but still not good enough. After a bit more taking down by Amy, they tried once more and got a rather roaring "Hello, Betty!" They then did their version of "The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" which I would *kill* to have on tape. I don't know all the lyrics to the song, but there's some reference to the aforementioned bugler being the "top", after which there was a _masterful_ poise. Another great poise after some lyric to do with "blowing". And, of course, the wonderful interruption of, "Hey, sailor, are those Bugle Boys you're wearing?" I was basically rolling on the ground. Romanovsky & Phillips were also loads of fun. I basically thought all of the womyn's music was terrible. Holly Near, Margie Adams, Chris Williamson, they all annoyed me. If only Ferron had been there to prove that lesbians don't have to write and sing cliches. Lynn Lavner, fortunately, did a wonderful song, something along the lines of, "I've been a lesbian too long." Loads of fun, and I'd like to hear more of her stuff. Lest I sound too misogynist, I'll add that Michael Callen's piece was pretty annoying too. Yes, I would have liked more Indigo Girls and ME, but I thought it was perfect the way each "band" got to do one piece and did so with a minimum of instrumentation--basically whatever they could carry out with them. There was no fiddling about with mics or monitors or lights or any other bother. >(I mean, I love woj dearly, but one man can do just so much, >y'know? ;) One man can do *plenty*, hon... What's the grading? Straight or Sliding Scale? Can I copy off >someone else's paper? I didn't study :-( That actually dates back about 5 years to a russian lit course I took at school. In addition to the twice-weekly lectures, we had a discussion section with a grad student which never went well. We'd all sit around, she'd say something brief about whatever we'd just read and then say, "Questions? Comments?" Nobody *ever* had any questions or comments, and we always ended up leaving about 40 minutes early. One day, this woman threw in the "Intense personal experiences?" and I just fell on the floor laughing. It was _such_ the non sequitur and yet so perfect for this group of students who never seemed to have anything to say. Strangely, I was the only one in the classroom laughing. ;-) Oh, BTW, Meredith, I forgot to tell you...don't feel bad about "missing" my birthday. I was deliberately withholding information because I was afraid that if people knew it was my birthday, there'd be a subtle (or not so subtle) shift in the focus of things, and I didn't want that to happen. Of course, I didn't realize just how closely people watched the birthday lists because Harry (and Cathy, who *should* have been in DC...) picked up on it pretty immediately. There are two ways I can think of to get in touch with Stuart Rosenberg, and neither of them involve computers. I think you'd have the most success with the 1st one: 1) Go see the Otters on Tue. nights at Schuba's. This is Stuart's band, and it is easy to talk to band members during the breaks. Plus, IMNSHO, it's a *great* show. And cheap ($3 or $1 if you've gone 3 times and get an Otter's card that qualifies you as a member of the band). 2) I know Stuart's wife, Rachel, and could, if really necessary, give her a call and mail her something or whatever.
