Hi! Goddess, but you all were prolific this weekend!!! I haven't had a chance to go through all the digests I've missed in depth yet, but I did realize one thing that I would like to rectify right this minute. Jeff, I cannot *believe* I was in your house on Saturday, your birthday, and I didn't even know it!!!!! I'm so sorry- you must have been sitting there thinking we were all a bunch of boors, not wishing you a happy birthday when there we were listening to music and hanging out in your living room. So on behalf of myself, woj and Valerie, I wish you a very very Happy belated birthday. And next time you have an Ecto gathering on April 24, drop big(ger) hints, okay??? :) (And I had a wonderful time Saturday afternoon, too- thanks again!) Random notes: Tamar, I hate you. You saw Ingrid Karklins on Sunday. But I told you this before, so it should come as no surprise... ;) But Sunday night I was seeing 10,000 Maniacs in D.C., a report of which will appear later under separate cover, as Mitch would say. The concert came on the heels of one of the most amazing experiences of my life, the March on Washington For Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Rights and Liberation. The weather was beautiful (though my sunburn still hurts :}), the speakers were good, the music was for the most part great, and the atmosphere was simply beyond description. The entire city was one big party all weekend- for once hundreds of thousands of people could be in a place where they didn't have any qualms about being themselves, and it was a beautiful thing to see. I'll not forget spending Saturday evening in the midst of the street party in Dupont Circle anytime soon. Words are failing me again, except for this parting comment on the subject of the March (National Parks Service, take note): 300,000, my ass!!!!! :) +===============================================================+ |Meredith Tarr meth@delphi.com| +===============================================================+ | The painted stage, it comes alive at night | | When all the world is dead | | And I become the sole audience, and they linger in my head... | | *Happy Rhodes* | +===============================================================+ ======================================================================== Date: 27 Apr 1993 23:11:06 -0400 (EDT) From: Suspended In Duct Tape Subject: 10K Maniacs in D.C. Hi! 10,000 Maniacs are on tour again, and on Sunday, April 25 they were at the Bender Arena at The American University in Washington, D.C. (for an absurd and ridiculous price, but hey, we fanatics know no reason). I went, along with woj and esteemed former (hopefully not for long) Ectophile Valerie Nozick and about 7,000 other people, many of whom were also in town for the March. Zap Mama opened for them. I had heard the name bandied about on ecto and in the papers for a while, but had never paid much attention, so I had no clue who or what they were. I was pleasantly surprised- their African a cappella made perfect opening music for a show, it was just the thing to have in the background as people came in and got themselves settled for the main event. I am seriously considering picking up their CD, as it would be just the thing to have as a backdrop for e-mail and the like, since it's not the sort of thing that commands full concentration, unlike Kate, Happy et al. Then the Maniacs took the stage. They had screen projections behind them, that when combined with the well-conceived lighting effects made for a fascinating background for the band. Natalie has gotten her hair cut even shorter, and she looked great in a short blue dress with white stockings. She's taken to spinning again, though after the first couple songs she apologized and said she wouldn't be doing much for the rest of the show, since she didn't know how weird it could be to spin in a really short dress. ;) They performed almost everything from _Our Time In Eden_ and _In My Tribe_, as well as "Eat For Two", "You Happy Puppet", and "Trouble Me" from _Blind Man's Zoo_. Unfortunately, nothing from _Hope Chest_ or _The Wishing Chair_, but I'm planning on seeing John and Mary should they play in my area, so that's no biggie. :) The Maniacs always put on a good show, and this was no exception- by the end almost everybody was on the floor dancing their brains out. ("Hey Jack Kerouac" works GREAT with a horn arrangement!!!) I had only two quibbles about the show, aside from the price: 1.) They didn't do "Scorpio Rising" or "Verdi Cries", and this time Natalie didn't pull somebody out of the audience to sing Michael Stipe's part on "A Campfire Song"- she left that part out entirely. Kind of a disappointment there. 2.) Something was very strange on the mix of "Like The Weather"- either the bass was up way too high or a bit out of tune or both. It made the whole song sound like it was on the wrong speed. Both of these are, of course, very minor, and on the whole I enjoyed the show very much. This Saturday I get to see them again, for less than a third of the price even, and I'm really looking forward to it! If they are coming to your area, go. (Does anybody know if the violist touring with them is Mary Ramsey? It sure looked like her, and I don't think John and Mary are touring right now... just wondering.) Well, this seems as good a place as any to jump in so, here I go... Hi there! I'm Larry Nathanson, a Bostonite transplanted to Brooklyn, NY (AKA Hell) for the tortures of Med School (AKA Hell's basement)... My birthday is 7 Nov 69, and my shoe size is 10, and I've only heard 8 gunshots tonight - so it's a good night! > After a lag in Happy sales, the Cambridge Tower has sold an Equipoise, and > an Ecto, as I was delighted to findout last week. Newbury comics still has >the > lonely Equipoise sitting in the R bin :-( [For those of you keeping track] Well, as of 17 Apr, the Newbury Tower sold an Equipoise, a VI, and a VII. (To me!) I bought Ecto, WP, and Rearm about a month and a half ago at the Harvard Sq Tower (after searching all over for months, mind you!) and in both places it was filed right next to the Happy Mondays... Argh! When I bought my first 3 Happy CD's, I was an instant fan. My "collection" consists of heavy influences from: Peter Gabriel, Sarah M, Enya, Clannad, Jane S., Kate, Sting, REM, and Thomas Dolby... Not only does her music fit right in, but it promptly overshadowed all of the above. Then I bought my second three, and lost my mind. All I've been doing is playing her albums - Usually I can study with music playing in the background... There's just something about her music... Now I think I'm going to flunk out! If anyone knows of an antidote, PLEASE let me know! (Besides listening to nothing but the Brady Bunch theme for a week straight...) >>Semi-regular postings about Happy Rhodes have appeared in rec.music.gaffa >(Love-Hounds) since January 1989 via Vickie Mapes, who "found" Happy in >1988 and played her regularly on her radio show called Suspended In Gaffa. Who can I beg/bribe/etc to get this show in NY?!?!? It sounds like it would be right up my alley... Also, I'd recommend people occaisionally mention Happy in r.m.g... That's where I first heard of her... Well, that's enough babbling for a first post-- I have to go (UGH!) memorize all those stupid folds in the brain - with "Cohabitants" playing in the background no less... --L ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 28 Apr 93 08:08:51 EDT From: mr rock n roll Subject: some early morning nonsense Angelos summarizes: >c) Meredith, where is your interview transcription? :-) pester pester pester. even *i* haven't heard it, so lay off, okay? ;) ;) ;) >d) After the Einstuerzende Neubauten concert, I can't think of music in the >same way... Are the >two bands similar in sound? yes and no. kristin hirsch (whose name i can never spell right) was the prime mover behind throwing muses. tanya was the second guitarist who wanted to write more, but it just never seemed to happen. that was part of the reason why she went off with the breeders for a while. of course, kim deal dominated that band, so tanya wasn't that much better off. on the last muses album that tanya appeared, _the real ramona_, the songs that were hers were distinctively different from kristin's. tanya's were poppier and more hooky while kristin's tended to get involved in complex guitar weirdness. however, surprisingly enough, i found that there was a lot of the muses sound in the belly releases - perhaps even more than what the muses sound like now as a three piece. >Buffalo has essentially 4 seasons: cold >and wet, cold and dry, cold and hot, hot (lasts about 2 weeks).:-) sounds like potsdam, ny (where i went to school). let's see, we had winter, indian summer (two weeks in february when it got really warm for some reason i fail to understand), indian winter (until may), mud (func- tionally equivalent to spring) and autumn. i heard tales of summers, but i think they are all myths. drk@leland.stanford.edu sez: >"Moon Seven Times" >Has anyone heard of this group? The first guy I asked had never heard of her. The second guy said, "Oh Yeah, she's the one who's gonna be here tomorrow!" I thought this was particularly ironic. He pointed out a flyer on the wall. Ingrid will be appearing at 7:30pm 4/28 (Wed.) to meet people and PLAY in the store! Way cool (except that of course I won't be able to make it). But do they have the CD? Not yet, the second guy says, they just 2-day express ordered it yesterday! Man, is that weak or what? She's gonna be there and they're *hoping* they'll have her CD in in time for the appearance. He said they got a promo copy and he threw on the store system to hear it, but it was *too* *good* and he thought people would hear it and actually want to *buy* it (gosh, now there's some world class logic) so he had to yank it off the player immediately to thwart the mass descendence on the store employees. He seemed very proud that he was able to sense that this was really good music and that therefore could decide that it should *not* be played in the store. Why do I loathe these stores? Now I know why I haven't been to Tower in so long and probably will only go back to get that CD which I'm sure they'll be out of by the time I get there. Anyways, for those Chicago listeners, if you can make it, go go go! (I wish I could...) They started out around the mid eighties as one of the only American bands on 4AD (ala This Mortal Coil, Dead Can Tango, etc.). Formed by cousins/half-sisters (depends on which articles you read) Tanya Donnelly and Kirstin Hersh, they put out four albums and one CD-EP before they broke apart in 1992. A lot of bands since they have tried to capture their harmonies and stream-of-consciousness wordplay, but usually with not the same success. A good introduction to them would be either Hunkpapa or (their best) The Real Ramona. Kirstin and another band member put out an album after Tanya left called Red Heaven which is uneven at best. TM stuff is guitar based pop with a twisted mentality. You might also want to check out the first Breeders album, Pod; Tanya was on that one before she left to form Belly. I had the pleasure of seeing Velocity Girl and Belly a couple weeks ago with Michael Peskura...wow, Tanya is fantastic live! As for Moon 7 Times, Neile and I have the CD and while at first I didn't much care for it...now I rather like it...they do sound a lot like Cowboy Junkies but with more energy and a better sense of improvization and fun. They won't wow you at first but they grow on ya. I'm wondering if anybody has heard of a band called PRAISE? A friend of ours sent us a tape of their album but other than the songs I don't know much about them. Female vocalist that sounds at time like Sara McL. They also sample some Bulgarian female singers. Fun dance music. And the usual etherial vocals. Has anybody else seen the similarity between Dead Can Dance and Bel Canto? Gothic rock lives...or is it classical gothic rock? ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
