Here is the next call for submissions to An Ectophiles Guide to Good Music. This is an open call for opinions about artists/groups whose names start with F & G. The idea of the Guide is to let us share our musical enthusiasms with each other. **The important thing is you being able to share what you think is important about this music.** Please, everyone, send at least your opinions of these artists. We welcome any and all participation and would like to receive as many opinions on as many artists as possible. Please respond with F&G to: ethelred@u.washington.edu by Wednesay, May 12. It's not as bad as I thought yesterday, but not much better. > compare that with the 1 US-$ complete postage for the other way round there > is something foul. Very foul. GRRRRR!!!! Yeah - maybe failing memory - it might be the case that the recent CD-containing letter I got from America (Canada to be precise) was actually just below 4 Cnd-$ postage. But this would also be half the price I pay. There was another letter from the US that was 0.95 US-$, it was also quite thick. For such a letter I would probably have to pay 6 DM. > telephone costs. Our telephone system is based on units of 0.23 DM each. > A local phone call costs 1 unit every 6 minutes. BILD now says that they > want to have 1 unit every single minute. 6 times more than before!!! (It > is about one year ago that they got from 8 minutes/unit to 6 minutes/unit.) In the evening this piece of news was kind of confirmed: our post minister denied it, but a spokesman of the post admitted that they are talking about changing the time/unit to 1 minute/unit, but also the DM/unit from 0.23 DM/unit to 0.12 DM/unit. Well - not 6 times but more than 3 times as much as before. BTW: It's typical of BILD not to say everything. DISCLAIMER: I don't read BILD, they cited them in the radio. > Of course the telekom already has denied it: "There are no resolutions to > that effect yet!". If you are able to read between the lines you could > read that they have not yet decided. If you have not yet decided it means > that you are talking about it. So sooner or later it will come. GRRRRR!!! See! I was right! They are talking about it! And they also said that they are planning that thing for about 1995 or so. So it will be not too much later. Subject: its been a long time... Hello, I hope this goes through...most of my messages seem to be returned to me with a long list of incomprehensible computer gibberish that essentially means the mail server at my school won't send it. *sigh* I have had alot of mail to catch up on and therefore most of the stuff here will be far out of date. Happy Birthday to all those in April. A wonderful month of contradiction in Buffalo where we have frost on the grass in the morning and sunbathers out in the afternoon. Happy Birthday to my mother (also in April). She doesn't read this list but I thought I would include everyone I know. :-) To Brni. What a horrible thing that happened to you. One of the people I live with is a manager in a NOCO gas station in one of the more run down areas of town and this is the sort of risk he runs into every day when he is down there. What can I say? Its never happened to me but I know how I felt when my mother was mugged at knife point. This is as close as I can say that I understand how you feel. hmm... Happy stuff. I lent a tape with songs on it from Warpaint and Equipoise to someone in my class who has been complaining that Happy Rhodes is difficult to find.:-) She seemed quite pleased to get it. I also made up a tape for another person I know who likes Kate Bush. Sometime I might get their opinions on her music. No more Warpaint of Equipoise around that I can see. The Happy Rhode space has been empty for weeks.:-( I put in a request for more of her stuff because I would like to get a hold of Ecto but who knows when it will come in. Does anyone here know anything about This Mortal Coil, Throwing Muses or Moon 7 Times (or is that Moon Times 7?). I've been hearing about them recently and my interest has been sparked. I have Star by Belly and I know that Tanya Donnely was once part of Throwing Muses. Are the two bands similar in sound? A small record shop near my house has around 3 TMC cds for $20. It also has some live stuff from Throwing Muses. Actually the selection there isn't bad. They have carried the 10,000 maniacs import cd singles for These are Days and Candy everybody Wants, as well as Hatful of Hollow and World Won't listen by the Smiths. Tons of stuff by Renaissance, import singles for Tori Amos and Kate Bush interview Discs. They also carry vinyl and sell used tapes (yay!!) I picked up Doppleganger by Curve there for only a few dollars. well, enough rambling on. School is almost over, summer will be here and then vanish all too soon. Buffalo has essentially 4 seasons: cold and wet, cold and dry, cold and hot, hot (lasts about 2 weeks).:-) Gophers will play in the woods and ducks sun themselves on the lawn and all will be merry. I've seen her in concert here in Berkeley twice. She's sort of a "bad girl of acoustic rock" kind of songwriter/performer. And her band is very, very good. I also have a copy of "500 Lucky Pieces" (number 29, to be specific). It's titled that because only 500 are going to be released. I think Penelope's going to be a moderate hit in college-city markets soon, so it could be a collector's item! Besides, it's a great album, even if it does overlap substantially with "Birdboys" and "The Whole World". I bought it just for the song "Sweetheart", which just completely enchanted me when I heard it for the first time in concert. PH was in a punk band called The Avengers in the early 80's, and it shows in her music now, even if it's a bit folked-up. She's the only "folk-rock" performer I know of who plays an autoharp in concert as well. Some sample lyrics: "If it's a man's world, Then I'm glad I'm a girl." "See how they run, Sheep to the fold, See how they fall, Corpse from the cross." So in closing, PH is worth checking out. So what are you waiting for? :) D^2 ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 27 Apr 93 20:54:45 MET From: brage@sphere.home.id.dth.dk (Jens P. Of course there can be a difference > between how things seem (or really seem) and how things really are. > The lines really *are* straight, after all. I'd guess that Bohr refers to the idea that we cannot actually *know* anything about what really is: We can only think up models, assume that our senses/instruments doesn't lie and that there indeed is a world out there that really *is*. So everything is a seeming; the lines you mention "really seems" to be straight because we can use our instruments (which seems to be) to detect that the lines seem straight, whereas the lines "seem to seem" bent to the naked eye... I don't know too much about the history of science, but I would guess that the black box view of the universe was first accepted in the beginning of this century. Until then, the prevalent view was (I believe) that we could learn exactly what the universe is; now we're satisfied if we can just construct models that fit on the observable interfaces... All of this of course ties in with the issue of the nature of the "ether" which was much discussed back then (until Einstein's special theory of relativity came out), and perhaps also the discoveries in (what became) quantum physics, that the system and the observer isn't independent. Of course, the black box model still isn't universally accepted: The discussions on the possibility of machine intelligence is a good example of this... Jens P.
