Still, it drives home the relevance to ecto of all fields of knowledge. However unresolvable the debate between science and philosophy, Yngve's dictum that "if I do not get to finish it I'll do it later" has a certain laid-back sensibility to it that I find appealing. To the memory of (1) Cesar Chavez and (2) the Mystery Loves Company Bookstore. Belated happy birthday (Sat.) to Barbra Streisand. NPR's report this morning on the MOW had an amusing bit on how a group of marchers in funny hats shouted on behalf of "gays in the millinery" and "Haterosexual rights," among others. Demonstrators who are imaginative without being outre are sorely needed. Good on those guys. As for the counterdemonstrators who shouted that "straights have more rights," it should be remembered that straights also have more lefts and centers, but the fundamentalists conveniently forget to admit that :-). Being under the weather, as I am now, tends to reduce the amount one can think of to say. Perhaps more another day soon, perhaps not, depending on the state of my health. Mitch ======================================================================== Subject: now I'm scared Date: Mon, 26 Apr 93 17:40:55 -0400 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu First off, thanks to all the folks who wished me well on my birthday. 'Twas a groovy day, and the precursor to an incredible experience at the March On Washington (which probably didn't have a full million attendees, but sure as hell had more than 300,000). Anyway, diverging from the b-day thang, my sister gave me a gift certificate at Sam Goody (ugh, or so I thought), which I decided to blow today (why risk having it burn a whole in my wallet?) So on my lunch break, I bopped over to Pentagon City, which happens to have a Sam Goody. In fact, I think it's the SG where my sister bought _Warpaint_ a while back. I didn't see any Happy there today, but maybe it got moved out of the rock section or something (no divider either, so I don't think they were 'just' sold out). Anyway, I'd planned to buy "simple" things, like _Shimmering Warm and Bright_ (which I have on tape) and other such easy-to-finds. Then I started to take a closer look. The first Find was Arson Garden's _Drink a Drink of Me_ EP. And for only $6.50! (this is what it costs to order the CD from Vertebrae). That was a total shock. The next Find was the _Brazil_ soundtrack (had to work on the KaTe collection, and I'm a big fan of Michael Kamen's...check out his "Concerto for David Sanborn and Orchestra" or whatever it's called...). My final find, and perhaps most surprising, was the eponymous CD from Moon Seven Times, which I'm listening to (and enjoying) as I type. I had rather low hopes walking into Sam Goody, and I walked out with 3 major surprises. I may have to rework my worldview. ;-) Jeff |Jeffrey C. I just come back from our local post office. I wanted to send a letter containing a CD to a friend in the USA. Fine. So I have to pay postage. Fine. Oh yeah! Our ex-Bundespost has a new postage system. They actually have commercials and ads where they state "It's more easy for all of you, since we now have only 4 kinds of letters left. Not the whole mass of different postages for different sizes and weights. Just four different kinds of letters. Ranging from 1 DM to 4 DM." Fine. Of course that's only the postage for letters that stay in Germany. Fine. It's not too much more expensive than before. The smallest letter (up to 20 gramms) is still the same. Fine. I can live with that. Now to the international postage: My letter with the CD weighed about 90 gramms. Before April 1st (no, it's not an April fool's joke) I would have had to pay 7,30 DM. Now it's 10 DM. Since the CD is a CD single the postage is more expensive than the CD that did cost me 8,99 DM. Unfine. Well - there are always small parcels, but the lady at the post office didn't know them. Small parcels could be cheaper. Well. Not well. Grrr. At least small parcels existed before April 1st. I didn't see them on the poster they had where the new postage scheme is presented. Grrr. They also didn't have the small sheet of paper equivalent of the poster you could take home. Grrr. If there are no small parcels any more then the postage for a <100 gramm letter/parcel has risen from 2.85 DM (April 1st 1989) to 10 DM (April 1st 1993). _*GRRR*_. Now if I want to send a video tape (VHS type, I begin to love video 8...) I had to pay about 16 DM before April 1st (small parcel that is). If there are no parcels now I have to pay 24 DM. GGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!! What brings me to the conclusion that there aren't any small parcels any longer is the fact that before you had to pay 34.40 DM for a 500 gramm letter, now it's 'only' 24 DM. They won't lower prices. The small parcel was more or less equally fast and did cost only about 20 DM. If I believe my postage sheet that's four years old it was only 9.85 DM then. Grrrr. Since I have payed about 16 DM for ~300-400 gramm parcels (non-letters) they have to have raised the postage two times in about four years and both times much, much more than our inflation rate. Grrrr. Of course I know that our Bundespost (all three parts) is more than bankrupt - of course, because it's not a private organization and holds the monopole. But what annoys me most now is the fact that it costs less than one US-dollar to send a CD from the USA to Germany and 10 DM (about 6 US-dollars) the other way round. It couldn't really be the costs, since sending the CD within Germany is 3 DM, i.e. it costs 7 DM to bring it over the Atlantic. Now if you compare that with the 1 US-$ complete postage for the other way round there is something foul. Very foul. GRRRRR!!!! Today the German 'newspaper' BILD (connaisseurs of British society could compare it with the 'Sun') stated that the German telekom wants to raise telephone costs. Our telephone system is based on units of 0.23 DM each. A local phone call costs 1 unit every 6 minutes. BILD now says that they want to have 1 unit every single minute. 6 times more than before!!! (It is about one year ago that they got from 8 minutes/unit to 6 minutes/unit.) Of course the telekom already has denied it: "There are no resolutions to that effect yet!". If you are able to read between the lines you could read that they have not yet decided. If you have not yet decided it means that you are talking about it. So sooner or later it will come. GRRRRR!!! ObHappy - eehhh - Happy that I bought a ZyXEL plus, before this 'announcement' the 'plus' (opportunity to use 19200 bps instead of 16800 bps) wasn't really worth the investment of about 200 DM (yet another thing much less expensive in the USA), but now it seems like a good thing. Nonetheless: GGGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!! Anyone wanting to gimme a new home? I don't know much about her, other than that she used to be in a band called The Avengers. I've only heard one song by them, and that was the other night when we saw her in concert. In 1988 she released an album called "Birdboys" on Subterranean Records. I can't even remember why I picked it up, because i'm sure I'd never heard of her. The cover is cool, maybe that's why. Whatever, I'm glad I did, because it's a good album and I've been playing songs from it ever since. I was excited when I saw that she was playing Saturday night at a tiny club called the Beat Kitchen. I found out later that, as long as she's been around, this is the first time she's done any touring at all. Penelope is sortakinda folk/notfolk, which should tell you right away that I have no idea how to describe her. (Though she's not in the same indescribable league as Kate/Happy/Jane/Tori.) It's good, solid song- writing, quirky lyrics mainly having to do with loves lost & such ("I keep reaching for the White Out, to erase my mistakes...before you remember them...") and a good voice. My descriptive powers are pretty sucky, sorry. (Help? Can anyone help me here?) Anyway, if you're at the right place at the right time, and have a few bucks (it shouldn't be too expensive, in Chicago it was $8.00 per) I'd definitely recommend seeing Penelope. Saturday night we picked up "The Whole World" CD, and the two cassettes. I spent today listening to "500 Lucky Pieces" on my walkman over and over again. It seems to be a "'tween" thing, something recorded between the albums to keep the fans happy, sort of like Boiled In Lead's "Orange." Many of the songs on 500LP also appear on "The Whole World" but the cassette seems to be more acoustic. I can't say for sure because I'm only now listening to TWW for the first time. I *do* know that I loved the cassette today, and that it's a limited edition, numbered and signed, and that if anyone goes to the concert and can only get one thing, I'd recommend 500LP.
