At her suggestion, I have reworked Bob's announcement in these pages of her Detroit visit into a crossposting to gaffa, rec.music.misc, and alt.music.- alternative. Clearly, Meredith is on a good horse with her happyvangelizing on Genie; but I agree with Vickie that more of us should share our announcements, reviews, encomia, etc. on Happy with a wider audience than each other. The bottom line: send them more often to newsgroups like those just mentioned. Happy's army, huh? Never really thought of it that way; though if she'd been in the business upwards of four decades ago, would it have been a sign of some kind of success if Uncle Joe Stalin had wondered out loud, "How many divisions does the Hapster have?" :-) Alan writes: >genie messages... When I think of Kate and Ann*, I think of McGarrigle. >But these guys were talking about kate bush and annie lennox! Must be that unique _quebecois_ ambience talking :-). Sugarcubes list (no not Happy, silly, but mr. E started subscribing), and I think that contributes to the low (non-existant) volume there. Kjetil comments: >Kristi (so weird to type that, you have a namesake in one of my (3) >sisters...) It's all nice and well that non-heteros get their rights, >but I think it is unfair to say that you don't have an open mind if you >haven't tried dating MOTSS. Did she really say _that_? I have no recollection of it, at least not in these pages. Joe Zitt goes on to say: >Mitch (the rest of whose identity I just lost track of) writes: And is still doing so, BTW :-). Loss of identity, of course, is endemic to the modern world; I'm still trying to figure out where I mislaid mine :-) (cf. cer- tain dialog by Barnard Hughes in the film _The Hospital_). Steve Fagg quotes Jeff: > You haven't been paying proper attention to Jorn. We're all hypocritical, > lying, cold-hearted Ecto-Creeps, buzz-bombing the innocent under the > orders of the Evil Jeffy, overlord and antichrist, forcing everyone to > conform to my way of being. What surprises me the most, in retrospect, is that Jorn never told Jeff, in so many words, to go fly a kite :-). For better or worse, the Perfect Squelch may indeed be a moribund institution :-). (I leave it to history to determine whether I can maintain my track record to date of never having been flamed in the recent Gaffa wars.) The May _Spin_ reports that an album of covers of Victoria Williams songs, call ed _Sweet Relief_, is due out this summer, part of the continuing effort to defray her medical bills. Participating artists include Pearl Jam, Lou Reed, Soul Asylum, Lucinda Williams, Maria McKee, Michael Penn, and Matthew Sweet. A belated happy birthday to Harry. An on-schedule happy birthday to Angelos. An early happy birthday to Kjetil and Pablo, and even earlier happy birthdays to Jeff and Christine. A much-belated toast to the memory of Leslie Charteris. And, of course, happy Earth Day to all. And what frustrated me most was that I didn't have any of her albums at home. And much worse - friends at the uni have borrowed most of them. And even worse - I didn't have _Equipoise_ which I wanted to listen to right then. But what do one not do to spread this fabulous music. I want to make her name known to all at the uni as fast as possible. I mention her everywhere and for all people I can reach. I just love the figures this far : Volume I - 2 Volume II - 2 Rearmament - 2 Ecto - 2 Warpaint - 6 Equipoise - 5 And that is only in Norway!!!!!!!A bit hard to distribute her first four albums since they are not possible to get in Norway :( But I let people listen to/ borrow them. My friends are doing a good job with the mentioning of her name as well. You remember the tape that disapeared :) I wonder where it is now..........Another of my friends _VII_ but he forgot it on the "hurtigruta" (popular translated to "Fast fenster" *grin*) when he went home before Easter. I hope the one who picked it up liked the music. I just wished I had ordered more of Happy's 4 first albums :( *sigh* I know of at least 4 who would have bought them. But I'll pass them sample-tapes at least. That should be all for now.... Regards, -- T ---- Only In Your Eyes Lies Your Soul.............. Very decent, indeed. > sigh. a musician gets popular and the crowds just go down the tubes. i first saw gabriel back in '83 (he was touring security) and he ended with biko (as he always ends, it appears). one by one the musicians left until there was just himself and the drummer, then he said "The rest is up to you" and left the stage. we kept singing after the drummer left, and wouldn't stop until they turned the lights on. also, during "lay your hands on me" he fell into the audience and they held him up and passed him around the floor of the stadium for about 10 minutes. he lost his headphone microphone somewhere on the way, and someone brought it back up to the stage and returned it to him. a few years later i saw the so tour. biko ended much like you described, and when he fell into the crowd, he never made it past the first few rows. he was pulling his pants back on as security folks dragged him back to the stage, and after the song he went backstage to get another shirt and some shoes. i was disgusted in the audience. i was impressed that he was willing to give the audience a chance the next night (i went to both shows) even tho he knew that they would do it again. > >Kjetil T. > brni mojzes@monet.vill.edu ***************************************** "Let us go to church and be good looking." -- Gong ***************************************** ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 22 Apr 93 18:41:03 EDT From: ken@startek.com (Ken Descoteaux) Subject: World Cafe Does anyone know which radio stations in the Boston/Worcester area carry World Cafe? (British readers subtract one hour, others should know what to do with the time frame...) Bye, Uli Schultern. [Bild von Bobo, drunter:] Sang frueher im Kirchenchor: Bobo aus Sachsen-Anhalt And now in English Everyone is only talking about Bobo Last year some people shrugged with their shoulders when hearing the name "Bobo In White Wooden Houses". Today it's a gap in one's musical education if you do not know the quartett around singer Bobo from a small village near Halle. The intelligent, soft, and sometimes kitschy-fanciful "folk-rock-pop" [have we finally found a category for "our" music?] fires you with enthusiasm again on the new CD "Passing Stranger" (Polydor). Bobo: "Basic themes are journeys, longings and the dreams that transport us to different surroundings." Hi Ecto! Brni, sorry to find out your day ended so eventfully! Perhaps you should have visited longer! I'm really glad that you're OK. Sorry it takes me a while to respond; the digest is a little slower than the bounce. I wish people would stop doing that. We're not going to make it unless everybody figures out a way to get along with everybody else. Be it redistribution of wealth, acceptance of cultiral and lifestyle differences, or just plain attitude, human beings somehow have got to get it together. Well, the Happy topic continues to grow on Genie. I notice a lot of people coming to the service from Prodigy, which just shot itself in the foot by announcing connect-time charges. As the newbies find their way around, we're hoping they'll discover Cat 17, Topic 18. Meanwhile, so far so good! Tomorrow 4/23 Happy is on the World Cafe on APR. I don't know if that goes out to the country all at once, but it's here in Philly and tape will be rolling! Check your local APR station... Yngve, I'm so glad to hear you enjoying Happy's music with such enthusiasm! Her music is a tonic for the soul; the song "Ode" on Ecto has been a particular favorite in that respect... Hello to more new ectophiles, and more tarnished neurons! I can't refer to my digests as I type to find your names, but welcome; this is a kind and caring bunch of people! My very best to those of you in Washington this weekend! I'm with you all in spirit. Looks like the weather should be good! Have a great ecto-gathering as well! I'm looking forward to the next local gathering... Don't forget April 30 for Detroit on the Radio tour. Anybody going to be able to make it to the store? Note to Bob Brown: I've been on that BBS several times now and have been downloading the rec.radio.shortwave newsgroup as well as the fidonet shortwave info. Thanks a million for your help!
