I did just want to quickly mention that the EctoFete was super... I second all the enthusiastic stuff Mary Lou said... wish I had been able to meet up with you guys the next day... It was way cool to meet all the people Mary mentioned and to finally put some faces to the names. Not to mention discovering that Eric (and his friend Andre... the name ML missed) is involved in a project that has some interest to me and my own work. Many thanks go out to Justin (bake any cakes lately?), Liz, and Eric for hosting the thing (and Alan too, who quasi-hosted it). I too acquired some new music... unlike ML, I wrote down some of the things Justin was playing. I picked up Ainsi soit je, by Mylene Farmer (I guess that's the only one from the fete), plus Mae Moore (Bohemia), Gogh Van Go (these were Canada-specific) and a coupla other things. I intend to write some reviews soon. Just for the sake of info-accuracy, I will take the liberty of correcting what ML said, thus: > Mike (mjm?) formerly of Montreal but > now studying somewhere in the states Well, I'm actually working, not studying, and it's Chicago, as you probably know by now. Great to meet you all --- COME TO CHICAGO!!!! -mjm (mike mendelson) P.S. I will very likely be in the NYC area for Memorial Day weekend and in the DC/Baltimore area for July 4th. Anyone feel like hosting ecto-parties around those times in those areas?! ======================================================================== From: Tim Breitkreutz Subject: Ecto-fete thanks and change of address Date: Wed, 14 Apr 1993 11:31:19 -0600 Well, I don't have much left to say about the Ecto-fete that hasn't already been said. It was a great time, and it was nice to meet some Ectophiles in person finally. Also a great huge thanks to Liz, Justin, and Eric for hosting the Ecto-fete as well as being outrageously hospitable during my stay. I too came away with many CD's, tapes, and memories from this most excellent gathering. This is true of the RE/Search crowd in general, but Ballard practically pioneered the field. I reall enjoy the format of this edition, with his comments in the margins. Shoulda been a hypertext. Late last week, Harry Foster commented in these pages: >Consider the snowballing effect of lifting the ban: once they lift the >ban on those gays, the military will be forced to address the issue of >those tacky uniforms. And we all know that fashion in the military will >undoubtedly decay of the moral fabric of our society--kind of >a "moral fabric" softener--guaranteed to wash out that rugged manliness. Which reminded me of something I crossposted last fall to the profemen list and ecto, summarizing a newspaper column on the new apotheosis of the "Manly Man" in the Air Force. The following passage seems especially pertinent: > [...] The uniform itself is >also being redesigned, from the original that "bore a striking resemblance to >a bus driver's attire" to an "airline pilot style" design that features >"Navy-like" rank insignia on the sleeves, "thereby providing an even better >slam against the Army." > [...] >(I seem to recall reading another news item that appeared in late 1990, to the >effect that McPeak had banned the wearing of T-shirts under open-necked uni- >form shirts. Reportedly, some Air Force personnel felt that this directive >was intended to ensure the greatest possible exposure for chest hair.) In the aggregate, it's hard to figure what's happening to the war machine's fashion sense while they're still being left to their own devices. Ending "The Ban" could only help them in that regard :-). Uli's transcription of Nina Hagen's lyrics in Berlin dialect reminded me of somebody's published conclusion that John F. Kennedy should really have said "Ich bin Berliner," that the "ein" turned it into an assertion that he was a pastry of some sort. It would appear that this analyst was still wrong, and if JFK wanted to be truly accurate, he'd have said, "_Ick_ bin Berliner." His more recent exegisis of Nina's lyrics made me wonder if anyone besides me had thought to make a bad joke about the great psychoanalyst, Dr. Erich Condom (Fromm) :-). I was also reminded of the datum published in 1970 in David Reub- en's book _Everything you Always Wanted To Know About Sex_, that "capote" (possibly as in Truman) was French for either "condom" or "douche"--I don't remember exactly which. Dirk's quotation of Nina's line "my skeleton is so sexy when I strip" (or words to that effect), in turn, reminded me of a 1920's dirty-blues song title (reproduced, coincidentally, on a painting recently on display in the Chicago Cultural Center), that Vickie mentioned in these pages sometime last year--something having to do with shedding the skin and dancing around in the bones. _Plus ca change, und so weiter_? :-) What happened to me during Sinead O'Connor's recent _SNL_ set was interestingly mirror-imaged during Peter Gabriel's appearance. In the latter case, I slept through the first number and was awake for the second. Coincidentally, Stuart Rosenberg led off his show Sunday afternoon with a number from PG's score for _The Last Temptation of Christ_. _All Things Considered_ did a profile of Syd Straw on Monday. When, oh when will it occur to them to do a profile of Happy? After reading Chris's writeup on the films of Yahoo Serious, I'm of two minds WRT whether the prospect of him eventually directing _Young Happy_ should be greeted with eager anticipation, or with apprehension :-). Kudos to Jessica for setting up the automatic conversion of files being retrie- ved from the ecto archives from binary to character code. Those intermediate files were pesky to deal with even when the decompress procedure at my end worked, which it didn't the last time I tried it. WRT Michael's thread on SF cartoon-show themes: IMHO WIVH, none of those actually discussed so far hold a candle to the theme from MST3K--which I've only heard once, and don't remember much about musically, but have read the lyrics to in the MST3K mailing list. An apocryphal story I read once concerns an outdoor college commencement when it looked like rain. The president of the institution tried to get through the list of graduates as expeditiously as possible, as the skies looked progress- ively more threatening; finally came the cloudburst, and as the president scurried for cover, he called out, "I hereby confer degrees on all those who have earned them." It is in this spirit that I now wish a retroactive happy birthday to all those on the list who had them while I was otherwise preoccu- pied. Speaking of falliing water, yesterday was the first anniversary of the leak in the Chicago River (actually, in a freight tunnel under it), which flooded most of the basements of downtown office buildings, and coincidentally had Meredith amused by my descriptions of the whole thing in these pages. As fate would have it, yesterday was also the anniversary of the damaging of the Apollo 13 spacecraft, which forced the scrubbing of the lunar landing and made the return of the astronauts much more problematic than usual. Vickie's quotation of Phyllis Schlafly's assertion that "Nuclear weapons are God's gift to mankind" reminded me of Billy Graham's observation, noted in a newspaper column in 1969, that Richard Nixon was an act of God. My first thought when I read that was that that explained why the effects of the Nixon administration were not covered under most forms of homeowners' insurance :-). Happy Tax Eve :-). I don't have time to go into it in detail right now, I should be in bed, but I'm so wired I won't be able to sleep anyway. The interview happened. It went unbelievably well. The tape came out. Happy liked it- at the end she thanked me for a good interview! Happy Rhodes is an incredibly intelligent, articulate, together, all-around awesome person. After the interview was officially over and the tape was shut off, we sat talking for another half hour... and could have gone on longer, but I had someone waiting for me to go for pizza downstairs so I had to go. I don't even remember a lot of what she said then, but I did take some notes on the important things: She wasn't sure if this had been mentioned on ecto yet, but she does indeed have a distribution deal in Canada and is getting airplay there, so Canadian Ectophiles should start bothering your local radio stations within the next week. (She wasn't sure exactly which stations have been sent CDs, but I'm sure we can get an updated list from Susanne at some point.) Also, she's getting distribution in South Africa and Spain.
