It is not unlikely that we may move on to a restaurant or even trek over to the National Zoo, a mere two blocks away. The easiest way to get to my house is via Metro Rail. While folks can theoretically park on Macomb Street, it's entirely possible that the street will be pretty full given the number of visitors to the city expected for the weekend. (and thanks to the proximity to the zoo, nice days always involve crowded streets) VIA METRO: Take the RED LINE to the Cleveland Park station. After passing through the fare gates and riding the rather long escalator, bear to the left (there will be a sign saying something along the lines of "West Side of Connecticut Ave." and ride the final escalator to the street level. Once you've made it to the sidewalk, make a U-turn and start walking south along Connecticut. You'll know you're going the right way when you pass the Uptown Theater (which may look vaguely familiar--you probably saw it in Madonna's _Truth or Dare_). If you pass a fire station, you're walking in the wrong direction. You'll cross two side streets, Ordway and Newark. At the third street, Macomb, turn right. I'm in the 11th or so house on the left. Keep your eyes open for a fuzzy blue flag (applique'd with a lighthouse) hanging above the front porch. If the weather's nice, I imagine I'll be sitting outside with a CD player and lots of cool discs. ;-) You know this already: DRIVING FROM NORTH OF THE CITY: didn't you see where I said you should take the metro? If anyone wants these directions, e-mail me and I'll pass 'em along. It's not too terribly difficult, but frankly I'm too lazy to figure out all the permutations. I've got a set of directions (which needs lots of editing) from 270S. If necessary, I'll re-do 'em to work for 95S for folks coming from Baltimore, NJ, and such. Just drop me a line! If you need any more clarification on anything (or if you get lost on the way over), don't hesitate to call: (202)-363-6565. Doors officially open at 12:30pm. Jeff |Jeffrey C. Ever heard of Yahoo Serious ? No, it's not a brand of soft drink, he happens to be one of Australia's most bizarre film makers that I've seen for a while. I suppose with a name like that, you wouldn't expect him to be completely normal ... anyway .... A few years ago, he made a film called 'Young Einstein' of which some ectophiles may be aware; one remembers Vickie Ectoqueen herself mentioning that she liked quirky little Australian films; where the young Albert Einstein, who was actually born in Tasmania, splits the beer atom and blows up his dad's tool shed (or something). (See my previously posted map of Australia for an indication of the location of Tasmania). Well, he's made a new film, called 'Reckless Kelly', about the notorious Kelly gang's descendants who live on an island somwhere in Australia, and young Ned, a bit of a black sheep in the family, goes robbing Automatic teller machines and depositing the cash in the accounts of people who can't repay their loans. A little reminiscent of Robin Hood you might say. Then again, who asked you, this is _my_ review. ;). Anyway, enough of the storyline. (and that's no more than the promos will tell you, so don't feel too spoiled). I personally think Yahoo Serious is a classic film-maker. Not classic in the sense of 'Spartacus', but classic in the sense of ... I dunno really. His films have so many stupid things happening in them, that you find yourself laughing at them, and he sends up so many sterotypical things so beautifully, that your laughter has the potential to become hysterical. Well, mine does anyway. Right from the beginning, you know you're in for a strange time, when the opening credits roll on a background of the sea at the top of the screen and the sky at the bottom. It unnerves you straight away. Anyway. I don't really expect the masses to like it. I went to see Spaceballs with three friends of mine, all of whom periodically turned to me during the film with incredulous expressions and questions of 'Why are you laughing' written all over their faces. Another great film, Spaceballs. Anyway, I digress. So what I hear you say - so what indeed. Like I said, It's _my_ review, I'll do it however I want. Nyerrr. If you get a chance, go and see Reckless Kelly, then come back and tell me how much you hated it because you didn't get the jokes. Maybe it's a bit too local to have wide appeal, I dunno. But, "Try it - you might like it" to quote PG (Kiss that Frog), and let me know what you think. It was brilliant* Chris. * - I always think of Billy Connolly too when I hear or say this word. -- | ||| ||| | ||| ||| ||| | ||Christopher Boek - boek@mullian.ee.mu.oz.au | ||| ||| | ||| ||| ||| | || Dept Elec Eng Univ of Melbourne Australia | | | | | | | | | / "Anybody remotely interesting is mad in |___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___| \_/\_/\_/\_/\__/(:*- some way or another" ======================================================================== From: boek@mullian.ee.mu.oz.au (Christopher Boek) Subject: Re: I forgot.. It sounds as though it should have something like 'Count-of-Monte' or something in front of it. Maybe it's just the way you say it, Vickie ;). Oh, and incidentally, I'm one step closer to possibly going to Holland in August/Septemberish, I got a letter from the Dutch Embassy that I'm one of eight finalists for two scholarships (my odds are down to 1:4) and if I do get it, I'd like to stop in places in North America on the way and meet some of you people. Are there any travellers out there who know whether it's easy to do such a thing. I'm told I can get a world ticket that lets me stop in several places, but I don't know very much about it. Maybe some of you can recommend the places to stop at, because my choice will undoubtedly be limited. One thing I'd like to do as well, is stop in a place where a PG concert will be happening, because he's playing in Holland in April, and Australia in October/November, so I'll miss him. The only way I can see of getting to a show is if I stop in America on the way through. An organisational nightmare, I'd say, but a doable thing, I reckon. Any advice/suggestions would be very very very very very very very very very much appreciated!! *:) Byee Chris. -- | ||| ||| | ||| ||| ||| | ||Christopher Boek - boek@mullian.ee.mu.oz.au | ||| ||| | ||| ||| ||| | || Dept Elec Eng Univ of Melbourne Australia | | | | | | | | | / "Anybody remotely interesting is mad in |___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___| \_/\_/\_/\_/\__/(:*- some way or another" ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 13 Apr 93 0:03:24 EDT From: WretchAwry Subject: Re: Whatever happens to come to my mind! :-) Jeffy says: > Vickie sez: > >We love her from _Return To Oz_ > > For some completely unknown reason, this made me think of Geoff Ryman's > _Was_, which everyone needs to read. I came up with "my oxy and my troll" which I was *convinced* was right. So convinced, I didn't even put a question mark beside it, and yet I asked Happy what an "Oxy" was. (We're talking about the song "Moonbeam Friends" here.) I *still* catch myself singing "and the clays maray" and "a million to one." (The songs "Number One" and "One Alien") "the clays maray" was actually "the craze we're in" "a million to one" was actually "unalien to one" "my oxy and my toe" was actually "my oxy and nitro" What *fun* that lyrics project was! Before I start I'll tell you my first impressions - I got Happy's 4 first albums (_VI_, _VII_, _Rearmament_ and _Ecto_)and _Equipoise_ two weeks ago and as some of you warned about listening to them all at once I let a friend of mine borrow _VII_ so that I had somewhat to look forward to. That morning I woke up wit ha feeling that something nice was going to happen that day. Therefore I was quick to get up and eat some breakfast before I picked up my mail and there it was a note from the post-office that a packet had arrived. The Post is only 5 minutes from where I live so I didn't have to wait long to hold the autographed CDs in my hands. Curious as I am I had to try one of them at once and chose _VI_. Most of you heard what happened I guess but I repeat it anyway - as I turned the CD-player on I forgot that I had 'resume' on and I had stopped _Warpaint_ at the third track :) And if that wasn't enough I hit the repeat-button as well *laugh* so that I heard _Given In_ four times before I found it out *blush* Not very strange though cause I looked at the CD-player the third time it played so how should I know anyway :) But the third song has become one of my favorites so it doesn't matter :) The second album I heard was _Rearmament_ and my overall impression didn't change. I was impressed - I loved _VI_ and I loved _Rearmament_ as much and sometimes even more. _Ecto_ is just incredible and i second that for _Equipoise_. That was something as a start :) Regards, -- T ---- Only In Your Eyes Lies Your Soul.............. I think that last line should read "Meant to catch their eye". I interpret this as a reference to the theory that some hold which says that because we radiate so much electromagnetic energy out into space, the Earth would stand out to any aliens who looked in our direction. Some scientists disagree that the amount of EM radiation would be noticable over significant distances, thus pouring cold water on the idea that aliens forty light years away may be watching our old TV shows. Happy's lyric may also (or instead) refer to deliberate transmissions from Earth aimed at potential locations for ET intelligence, with the intention of alerting them to our existence. I heard of plans to do such a thing many years ago, but I never did hear if it was ever done. I saw this movie when it first came out (well, in Hong Kong at any rate). I had seen a review of it on Entertainment Tonight. Yes, they did have ET in Hong Kong...it was just a few months late. I dragged my mother to see it and well, she hated it, the audience thought it was hysterical and I missed quite a bit of the dialogue. I didn't have my mother's ability to read the subtitles.:-( I remember it being quite scary in some parts...especially in the beginning when the girl was chased by wolves, and very Freudian(?). It seemed they took the subtext of the story of a girl awakening into womanhood and sexuality and made that the major theme in the story. I remember the images of her hiding in a tree from her boy friend when they were playing hide and go seek and finding an egg in a nest with a small baby doll, lip stick and mirror. I didn't need to hit over the head to see what they were getting at.:-) I'd like to see it again. The theater I saw it in wasn't the best place to see a movie. It was a renovated theater, with a balcony and stall section, and the acoustics were very bad. >Thanks for reminding me of it!! No kidding...I hadn't thought about that movie in ages. Rowe" Subject: Mary Lou's Excellent Adventure in Montreal .... and it was most excellent, fer shure. (I should be working but this HAS to be written) Really there is nothing quite so exhilarating as getting off a train onto the Montreal Metro (subway), then getting off into a completely unknown neighbourhood, walking 3 blocks, walking up a flight of stairs to a door upon which you knock and then announce to a group of people you've never seen before in your life: "Hi, I'm Here." (or words to that effect). Who was there: Alan E. formerly of Boston Justin formerly of Toronto, a host Mike (mjm?) formerly of Montreal but now studying somewhere in the states Angelos of Boston Liz, formerly of Boston (I think), a hostess Tim from University of Alberta Eric, a cohabitant of Liz and Justin's a friend of Erics Mary Lou, a refugee from Ottawa formerly from Newfoundland Anyway, Liz and Justin were fantasic hosts! We were liberally plied with food and drink ( I now have this thang for Hobbit Tea). The music was excellent... perhaps I should have requested the playlist as these were all 'Ecto-artists': even though I asked 'Who's this?' everytime a new cd was put on, I still can't remember them all. (I have already admitted to losing brain synapses so none of the Montreal people will be surprised at this!) For me, this was an incredible event. First of all, I was with a roomful of people who approached music mostly like myself! WOW!! I am NOT used to this! Secondly, it was FINALLY to see and hear stuff by Happy other than Warpaint. I saw those original hand-produced tapes!! Not only that, I saw both the Ecto T-shirt and the Aural Grat. T-shirt... the concensus is that the Ecto T-shirt was the winner. I am far more determined now to get all the cds and now I've got Alan egging me on. But things did not end with the Ecto-fete..... After the party, I went to Alan's flat (officially dubbed Mary Lou's crash space) and had an epiphany when perusing his cd/record collection. Needless to say, there was much taping going on!! AND I got to see pictures of other Ecto-philes: Jessica (long and short-haired), the Footah-man: Greg, Klaus and Claudia (hope I got that right), Woj, Meredith... Hey, you guys really exist: Ecto really isn't some AI project out there playing mindgames with me. Well the next day we all got together to do the food thing and the shopping thing. Along the way, somehow the decision was made that I should stay an extra day (I was going to leave on the 4;30 train). With much assurance from the back seat (Tim, Liz and Justin) that my cats would not starve to death over the next 24 hours, we then proceeded to get my train ticket changed. Afterwards (I have left out the wild and wacky car drive through downtown Montreal ... not due to Alan's driving which is actually quite civilized but to an incredible lack of left turns, traffic jams and fun with parking spots!!) we all met up at Cafe Centrepol on St. Urbain. This place has the most incredible sandwiches, many of which are constructed with huge mounds of cream cheese. After surviving incredible cream cheese overload, Alan and myself embarked on an activity that I do well : SHOPPING. Seitain Chinois is a must, people... AND of the marvelous conversations held well into the night... I was finally sent home bearing bags of swag, tapes of Happy, Bel Canto, Single Gun Theory, Skinny Puppy, Tori Singles, and Tear Garden and a weekend to remember!! I have a whole bunch of new friends now!! It's true what Vickie said: Ectophiles are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Anytime any of you are in Ottawa, be sure to let me know!! I also can provide crash space. Enough gushing. I had a wonderful time. I read in some old digest about the _Rearmament_ vs _Ecto_. 'Most' of you choose _Ecto_ mainly cause of the song BOX H.A.P......But myself I can't pick one or the other of the albums to be my favorite. I love all of the songs even BOX H.A.P . Happy is using something that often use in my diary (not an ordinary diary, I'm not interested in the events in themselves but what's behind them. I do often discuss why I do/don't like a person. It helps me to find out what hides deep inside me). It's like a dialogue with a part of oneself - a leg that hurts, or just a feeling for example hate/love. I've argued so hard with a part of myself or even two parts of myself that I've fallen asleep. It maybe sounds strange but it really helps. Sometimes I like _Rearmament_ better than _Ecto_ but othertimes it's completly different. There are times I can't stand any of them and only listens to _VI_ and _Equipoise_. Someone just came here and borrowed my _Equipoise_ and bought _Warpaint_. I guess he will buy _Equipoise_ as well(I hope at least:)). Just before Eastern I sold a set of _Warpaint_ and _Equipoise_ to someone I had played _VI_ for Happy is really beginning to become popular here in Tromsoe. But still no albums in the record-stores *ponder* I got to do something with that :) Reagards, -- T ---- Only In Your Eyes Lies Your Soul..............
