Seriously, it is a brilliant* film. I had seen it last week by myself and tonight Chris and I went together. We were both in tears throughout. We add our voices to those who recommended it, even if you know the "secret" because we both knew beforehand and it didn't make any difference in how much we were absorbed and emotionally moved. I just found out yesterday that Neil Jordan also directed _The Company of Wolves_, a movie we *loved*! I knew about _Mona Lisa_ and _High Spirits_ (I wonder if there's a "director's cut" of that film, or at least, any outtakes of Mary Coughlin performing. I really want to meet NJ just so I can ask him) but I didn't remember about TCOW. I think we're going to watch it again tonight or tomorrow night. We own it, but I haven't seen it in ages. I'd been meaning to watch it again since I found out that Danielle Dax is in it (though her part is very small, I heard.) The Company of Wolves R 1985 Stars Angela Lansbury, David Warner, Sarah Patterson "Neither a horror film nor a fantasy for the kiddies, this dark, psychologically oriented rendering of the "Little Red Riding Hood" story is for thinking viewers only. Angela Lansbury stars as Grandmother, who turns the dreams of her granddaughter (Sarah Patterson) into tales of spooky terror." ...and I really couldn't describe it any better than that. Vickie ps, I'm feeling much better. I have a lot to catch up on. pps, So, how'd it go in Montreal? ppps, Wish I could be in Montreal *and* Washington. Finished the short stories this week, and though their narrative content is generally sparse, Jordan has a high degree of skill in evoking moods and emotions by describing locations. Oh, and one other tidbbit: 3) Jordan just finished the first draft of the INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE screenplay; at least that's what he said on TV just before the Oscars last week. Ron i know all there is to know about the crying game... ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 9 Apr 93 22:53:13 EDT From: WretchAwry Subject: I forgot.. ..to explain the "*" beside the word "brilliant." Everytime I think of that word I automatically think of Billy Connely(?) the comedian that ChristoB met at WOMAD. With that comes thoughts of his comedy routine where he uses the word. I'd blush-o-rama if I repeated it, suffice it to say he used the word in connection with the act of self-gratification. Say no more...nudge nudge... Being a statistics fanatic I was interested in the quantity of messages each of you mailed to the list last month. I wrote a small KEDIT macro that extracted all "From:" lines from the digests. Before that let me wish Happy Birthday to all the April 10 Ectophiles, and a special Herzliche Gluekwuenschen zum Geburtstag to Klaus the birthday list keeper! And even before I talk about the ectofete, let me thank Alan and the Filiatrault indigenous and immigrant 'cois for their hospitality. I left you sitting in the McGill computer room, contemplating some CD shopping. Well, I did head out after I mailed my post, and spent a wonderful 2 hours roaming around downtown Montreal (walked about 5kms!!) with a great deal of luck. I found some Tom Robinson CDs for not too outrageous prices at HMV, (pronounced ash-em-veh :-) ), and later with the help of Alan found Sam the record man (I came to within a 100 meter radius of this one during my trek but didn't realize it was on the street one block down from where I was walking). In the case that you are interested the CDs I got were: _Still loving you_ and _We never had it so good_ by Tom Robinson, _so_ by Peter Gabriel (why? because it was cheap!), _No borders here_ by Jane Siberry (my first Jane S. haven't heard it yet because I am listening to the next CD) and _Abba Gold_. I **LOVE** this CD [he says without a hint of shame]. Aaaanyway, after stopping for some smoked meat sandwiches and some poutine (pronounced pou-TSI-ne) we eventually reached the ectofete residence. Tim from Alberta and Mike from Chicago were already there. Mary Lou arrived not too much later from Ottawa. Justin, Eric and Liz (being the hosts) were also there! So what happens when you put ectophiles together in real life? You have a *great* time talking about music, life and the world in general. Oh, let me not forget to mention the culinary skills of Justin and Liz, the dessert-meisters! I had a great time, and look forward to seeing all again, either in Boston or in my 99.9% not-so-distant-future residence in Berkeley, when I will not be *so* tired as I was that night. But I still managed to hear all sorts of new music ranging from Mylene Farmer to Harmonium. Unfortunately I had to leave the morning after to head to the airport, where I was stranded for 3 hours due to fog in LaGuardia. :-( So, I don't know if the ecto activities were continued later in the day. Thanks again to all! Angelos (hoping his number of posts/month will be equivalent in eloquence to the number of chapters'o'thesis/month in the next two months :-) ) 'Try once more like you did before, sing a new song, Chiquitita'-ABBA ======================================================================== Date: 10 Apr 1993 14:13:53 -0400 (EDT) From: ROBNPAM@delphi.com Subject: Question re Radio List One of the radio stations on Bob's list was WHRL - Albany, NY. I listen to that station as I'm drifting off to sleep. I'm not sure if at one time it had a different format and that's caused some confusion, but WHRL is a contemporary jazz station, and I've never heard anything even remotely Happy-like on it. Thus I'm wondering if it was included on the radio list in error. I'm all for trying to get radio stations to expand their horizons, but I have a feeling that one would really be an uphill battle! Pamela ======================================================================== From: depeche@binkley.cs.mcgill.ca (S. A. Ezust) Date: Sat, 10 Apr 93 14:15:22 EDT Subject: Montreal Ecto-Fete Report I know this is the second time I said this, but Happy Birthday Klaus!! The first time was rather premature.. I must have gotten the wrong month or something.. :-) Second, the Montreal Ecto Party has ended, as far as I'm concerned. I know there are some other ectophiles still in Montreal now, but I have to catch up on my school work now, so I won't be able to continue in the festivities... It all began with me picking up Angelos at the airport on Thursday afternoon. I showed him around the record stores of Montreal and showed him some effective ways of losing weight (at least, in his pockets!), Alas, I didn't have time to show him my favorite CD shop, Rayon Laser, which *DID* have a used copy of Flat Earth by Thomas Dolby (a CD he was looking for furiously).. We drove up to Justin's house around 8, where Tim and MJM had been drooling over Justin's CD collection, and we ate and talked for the entire night. Liz bounded in around 8:30, fresh from her nightly run, and Marylou stepped off the train and into ecto-paradise shortly after that. Marylou caught up on the old Ecto releases, since we didn't have a copy of Equipoise to play at the time... It was wonderful to add more faces to e-mail addresses. We gabbed until 1am, at which point we wound down and called it a night. I dragged Marylou over to my place and sat her in front of my stereo and updated her on Equipoise and a few other goodies. I listened to music that day which I had almost forgotten about, but I was re-discovering it with Angelos and Marylou, which was great. The following day, Marylou and I drove back to Justin's, and then Tim, Justin and Liz all piled into my little car and made an expedition for Hobbit Tea, Books and bizarre sandwiches (tropical fruit, cream cheeze and raw garlic! Wow!) as provided to us by Cafe Santropol. Marylou had to fix a typo in her return train ticket, as she was supposed to spend an additional night here (how can you only spend 20 hours in Montreal? Impossible, I say!!) so we ran down to the train station and changed it :-) And then explored *more* record and book stores. Archambault Music, on Berri and Ste.Catherine, is an increidble store. I'm amazed I never explored it before. It has a selection which is comparable to Tower, but the prices are much too high. They also sell musical instruments - all sorts of synths, electric pianos, and acoustic pianos, and other goodies. Sheet Music galore, too.. I was impressed. Anyway, Montreal is a lovely city, and I grow to appreciate it more and more when I show people around it. Angelos , it was great to see you again. To MJM, Tim and *especially* MLR - I am so glad you could make it. This definitely qualifies as one of the most enjoyable get-togethers I've had this year, and I'm looking forward to the next one! The ectophiles to me are almost like, I dunno... An extended family, maybe? Without exception, every one that I've met on the list so far has turned out to be a wonderful person, and in some cases, the acquaintance turns into a great friendship... To any of you who haven't met other list members - try your darndest to attend any ecto gathering within a reasonable distance; you won't regret it!
