Date: Wed, 7 Apr 1993 23:32:15 -0400 (EDT) Does anyone have a tape of the Happy interview on WYSP in Philly? Lenny & Dianne (from 21st Century Sound) were out that evening, and they DJ from WYSP was going to send them a tape of the interview. Unfortunately, the technician put in a 74 minute tape, but Happy went longer than the one side, so the end of the interview is missing. If anyone has a copy of the whole thing (or at least the end), e-mail me (wrp@ivy.paramax.com) and maybe we can work something out. -- ============================================================================ Bill Pringle Software Tools Paramax Corporation Voice: (215)443-7500 X4023 Internet: wrp@ivy.paramax.com UUCP: ...!uunet!mimsy!widener!gvls1!wrp%ivy ======================================================================== From: boek@mullian.ee.mu.oz.au (Christopher Boek) Subject: Q and the new age Date: Thu, 8 Apr 1993 13:32:04 +1000 (EST) Angelos writes ... > > Hi, > > Just a brief note to recommend to ectophiles the April and May issues of > Q magazine that both feature CD samplers for free. The MOW is going to be such a wonderful event, the crowd estimates are between 1.5 and 2 million people marching for equal rights (there's even rumors that Madonna will make an appearance at the rally). Saturday's lunch sounds great to me. My hotel room has been moved from the Omni Georgetown to the Hyatt in Bethesda Md (this was a last minute screwup). Anyway, I'm looking forward to meeting other Ectophiles! Even if you're not Lesbian, Gay, or Bisexual come on out to the MOW! We won't discriminate, and we can always use a few extra friendly voices! Let's hope that the weather is nice, and that there are no showers! Ooops, I said the word "showers"--the reminds me of the military ban. I know Ecto isn't the place to discuss GLB issues, but whenever I hear the word "showers", it sends me into an absolutely debilitating tizzy fit. Showering is not the issue at all--why, everyone knows the real issue is fashion, and most straight men have no sense of fashion. Consider the snowballing effect of lifting the ban: once they lift the ban on those gays, the military will be forced to address the issue of those tacky uniforms. And we all know that fashion in the military will undoubtedly decay of the moral fabric of our society--kind of a "moral fabric" softener--guaranteed to wash out that rugged manliness. Ooops, I said that "wash" word again--that brings up the issue of showers. Boy, with all this showering going on in the military, when does anyone have time for combat? ;-) -Harry ======================================================================== Subject: Salut ecto! Date: Thu, 08 Apr 93 14:41:18 EDT From: Angelos Kyrlidis Hi, A *very* brief hello from Montreal, where I arrived this morning after a 2 and a half days worth of interviewing at Clarkson university (alma mater of 2 distinguished ectophiles). Potsdam was a nice quiet village, and the Uni was also cool. HOWEVER woj and kIrI should be ashamed, since there were no Happy Rhodes CDs at Desert Island Music, the local CD store that I managed to check out ! :-) [just joking] While Alan is in class, I am catching up with ecto, (I am caught up now) and will soon explore the CD stores in the nieighborhood. Looking forward to the ectofete later tonight! [BTW, Bob L. Should add at least *ONE* Boston radio station to Suzanne's list. No wonder they don't know who Happy is when I call, they don't have any CDs! And that should IMHO be WFNX (101.7). I will e-mail you the address when I get back home] Talk to you all later, Angelos 'Il ya a des parasites dans mes oreilles'- Joyeux Rhodes [Pardon the spelling errors, it's been a while] ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 8 Apr 93 13:46:17 CDT From: lusky@sol.hc.ti.com (Steve Lusky) Subject: MOW and happy Gender Atypical Younkers Access to showers is a dirty political issue. Harry mentioned the military. I thought immediately of corporations that provide free car parking but deny decent bike parking and showers for bike commuters. Grrrrr... Support transportation modes that pollute, but not the most benign form of transporation -- bicycling. Such is life... Imagine those Tailhook guys having the shoe on the other foot. Perhaps they should judge people on their bahavior instead of what they are. Naaahhhh, let's keep the status quo, even if it tolerates much sexual or gay harassment but invades privacy to root out any who just might offend "me". I must come clean: I did dress in Frankenfurter's transvestite custume last Holloween -- to a church dinner! (My spouse insisted; as a costumer she sometimes likes to treat me as a mannequin.) Even wore it on a club bike ride, spiked heels and all -- oooooh, the comments! At least some people are tolerant. Having been exposed to folks in theater and at West Point (I refused the appointment), I find many of the former to be better Americans than the latter. Wash /oops/ Wish you all well at the MOW. But what to do when the rain comes down? The rain may be seen as symbolic. Be "in peace, in love, in harmony." Just dress for success! What a hoot! Their claims of patronizing certainly >seem justified if that's the case... Can anyone verify this? I can't verify this, but I can believe it. In my days at Rutgers (late '70s) the administration was always saying odd things like that. Fortunately, I was at Livingston College, which, in those days, was the weird school where they put all the people that they didn't want sullying up the main school -- thus, it's where the fun and creativity were. ObHappy: I've been seeing Equipoise in several stores around here... but I'm chomping to get Ecto next. Make of this what you will WRT my true priorities in life :-). Today there were two, count 'em, two sessions touching on, in effect, the sociology of the internet. The most memorable of the several papers given on the subject, somehow, were the ones that expounded on the dynamics of interaction in a sex-oriented IRC channel (somehow bringing to mind the comment of the pseudonymous "J," in her 1970 classic _The Sensuous Woman_, that someday someone would figure out how to get orgasms from computers), and another on life among the natives in alt.sex.bondage (which, if you look at it the right way, lends a whole meaning to the great words of C. Wright Mills in _The Sociological Imagination_: "Every cobbler thinks leather is the only thing, and for better or worse, I am a sociologist" :-) ). There were also papers on the application of ethnographic theory to the study of the net, and on the general dynamics of computer-mediated interaction. I did, nonetheless, manage to get in a little Happyvangelism, insofar as one of the panelists whom I had engaged in post-session conversation asked me for more on Happy and ecto. Let me now turn to my real reason for posting: Meredith's query on the timing of Peter Gabriel's appearance on _Sonnabend Nacht Lebendig_. It's the night of this Saturday, the 10th. Always happy to clear up ambiguities in my posts :-). As I said before, I only have one of them translated, and I will post this one here. First the original German version, then my more or less successful try in translating them. I have corrected the errors I have made in transcribing the stuff after I received the official lyrics sheet from Klaus, vielen Dank auch, Klaus, so all errors in the English text are mine. Oh - for those who are a little bit familiar with German, I removed the Berlin kind of dialect Nina uses in her transcription. Many of them couldn't be heard anyway. ('Ick' as the Berlin form of 'ich' is pronounced like 'eeek' with a very short 'eee', 'ich' is pronounced (like Nina does it) similar to 'Richard' without 'R', 'ard' and the 't' like sound of the 'ch' and a 'ch' that is softer than the English one even without the 't'. As I said before I had to compromise between preserving (kind of) language, rhyme, meter and contents. I chose to preserve language and contents as closely as possible, so it isn't possible to actually sing the song in English the way I translated it, and you can't hear the nice rhymes, but you could always take the original to do that. Another thing I said before: The lyrics here would probably awake the PMRC kind of souls, remember: it's not me, it's Nina ;-). I added a few comments in []s. Bye, Uli --------------------------------------------------------------------- Auf'm Friedhof Kleiner Vampi, [actually it's 'Wampi' in Nina's lyrics. I don't know if this is Berlin dialect or by purpose, but 'Wampi' might be translated as 'small pot belly', who else thinks 'vampire' is better?] auf unser'm Friedhof liegen wir zwei in der Stille. In der Stille, da gibt's kein Fromms und keine Pille, in der Stille. Und wir beissen, in weisse Haelse, bis sie bluten, bis sie bluten. Und wir saufen die Kandidaten ueber'n Haufen, ueber'n Haufen. Und dann, danach - (Blut Blut Blut - Blut tut gut - Tod Tod Tod - Tod tut Not) [I originally got this line almost completely wrong] Ich will nicht sterben (Peace Peace Peace - Peace im Verliess) [I originally heard 'ich ich ich - ich bin verliebt', that one isn't too different in that kind of effected voice] Jesus?! Hier ist Nina. [originally I heard 'Jesus - ist niemand', that means 'Jesus - is nobody' which would be much more provocating and as such Nina-like. Perhaps this effect is intentioned.] [Nina writes under the lyrics that it is the devil not herself who says 'Gott ist tot'.] ------------------------------------------------------------------ On th' Graveyard Little vampi, on our graveyard we two are lying in the silence. In the silence, there is no devout[?] and no pill, in the silence. [sorry, I don't even understand the not-so-German word "Fromms"] And we bite, in white necks, until they bleed, until they bleed. And we booze the candidates down, down. And then, afterwards - (blood blood blood - blood does good - death death death - death is neccessary) I don't want to die (Peace, peace, peace - peace in the dungeon) Jesus?! Here is Nina. Little vampi, on our graveyard we are happy, we are happy. My skeleton - is so sexy when I strip, my skeleton. The devil comes - he helps us up and says to us: "God is dead, The Lord is away, God is dead, The Lord is away, God is dead, The Lord is away, God is dead, The Lord is away." Yeah God is dead. ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
