I'm planning to have *some* sort of Ecto Gathering the weekend of April 24-25, as a number of ectophiles will be in DC for the March on Washington for Gay, Lesbian, and Bi Rights. (it remains for y'all to guess which ones fall into which categories...;-) (of course, first you have to guess who's coming to town in the first place) Anyway. Right now, I suspect that lunch on Saturday is the easiest time to plan for something. The March/rally is on Sunday and I imagine everyone will be busy. While I know that at least one ectophile is flying in on Thursday, I would guess that folks will largely be in transit or getting settled on Friday. I might try to plan lunch at a restaurant, perhaps somewhere cafe-like where we could sit around and gab comfortably. Any and all ectophiles are of course invited; there aren't many in the DC area, but come join us! I'd appreciate e-mail RSVPs so I can get an idea of how many folks might be coming. Also, if any of you have suggestions or requests for another time or activity, now is the time to say so! Jeff (your friendly, neighborhood ectofag) |Jeffrey C. Well, I don't like Yanni's music at all, but he said something very important: "Creativity means life. When I create something I feel alive." That's something I thought about a lot during the last year. I felt rather lifeless because I wasn't creative at all. I started writing my diploma one year ago but I gave it up, because the subject was too boring. On the one hand I was urged to finish my study, on the other hand I had no incentive to start another work. In former years, when I played keyboards in a band, I was very creative. I wrote new songs and had lots of ideas and I felt very self-satisfied. But working out ideas on a keyboard is a very time-spending job, so I always felt guilty last year when I had spent days at my keyboards without doing anything for university. I refused to make music and finally I did nothing. My depression grew, I couldn't sleep well. I often woke up at night and thought "I am a real nothing, I don't do anything, I will never get a job, etc". I had no one who impelled me. But - a few weeks ago I started writing my second diploma. I'm very busy and I write one or two pages a day. The subject is very interesting and it makes a lot of fun. Now, that I'm creative again my self-respect grows and I know that I will finish my studies this year (let us hope!). Yanni was right: CREATIVITY MEANS LIFE. I hope, you all are creative and alive :-) Dirk ------------------------------------------------------------------------ || \\\\\ || ///// | dkastens@dosuni1.rz.Uni-Osnabrueck.DE || ))))) IRK || ((((( ASTENS | "Music's the way, the only way I know" || ///// || \\\\\ | Happy Rhodes ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 6 Apr 1993 23:41:00 +0200 From: uli@zoodle.esfra.sub.org (Ulrich Grepel) Subject: Happy Zitrone Hi, a few weeks (months?) back I posted something about a chocolate bar called 'Happy Peppermint', wrapped in green paper. Firstly Joan Baez. The only thing I have by her is Play Me Backwards, which I like alot and am happy to write up, but she has a long history and many other albums behind her, that I'd like to know more about. Also Blowzabella, who I have three albums by, though I'm by no means an expert on. I'm not really sure that they're suitable as ecto-fodder, but they're certainly strange and wonderful enough to get into a good muic guide. Again I'll write up what I have. -Anthony (who's still trying to think what he can possibly say about Tori Amos for the guide). ======================================================================== From: rjk1@cec1.wustl.edu (Bob Kollmeyer) Date: Wed, 7 Apr 1993 11:36:33 -0500 Subject: Morphing While I'm sure it is not of the same quality as the one Vickie has said that Chris will be doing, I have sent to Jessica a morphing film of the cover of Equipoise. I wanted to do a morph like the one Vickie described a while back; taking the pictures of the mirrored half-images of Happy and the monster(Turk, right???) to transform the "whole" Happy into the "whole" Turk. While this worked, I wasn't pleased with the results since, face it, while the whole Turk looks fine, the whole Happy looks a little bit, uh... wierd. If Happy could be persuaded into letting us at the original picture (instead of the one that is cropped off a little bit too far off center that is on Equipoise), the end product would indeed be quite nifty! (wish wish wish) Instead, I took the picture of the cover of Equipoise (sans title and name) and flipped it along the vertical axis so that Happy and Turk flipped positions at the end of the morph. This worked pretty well, but the center of the picture was a little off center WRT the dividing line between Happy and Turk. The result was a rather wide bar down the middle as the morph took place that just stayed flesh colored. It flipped around a bit but detracted from the picture as everything around it went from flesh (gads, I just realized I'm in "Old Crayola" speek. Strike all "flesh"es and replace with appropriate new Crayola color... 8) ) to green and back. Anyway, it was getting late and I got it down to a one pixel bar and I didn't want to crop and remorph everything again since it was really only a low-resolution test (I scaled it down to around 160x100), so I left it as it was. I love the way Happy's and Turk's cheeks line up as they flip. With the full Happy and Turk, we could do a Happy-Happy>Happy-Turk>Turk-Turk>Turk-Happy>repeat morph.... ooooh. I'll be doing it again this weekend with a higher resolution version and assuming I can keep the size down to a reasonable level get it to Jessica next week. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- So, available Real Soon Now in some directory on hardees.rutgers.edu will be: 45414 Apr 7 10:49 aaplay.zip 261523 Apr 7 10:49 equimorf.zip 16023 Apr 7 10:49 playfli.zip 154298 Apr 7 10:37 waaplay.zip equimorf.zip is the morph. It is a 20 frame FLICK file that is set to loop so it ping-pongs back and forth infinately between Happy-Turk and Turk-Happy. All players here are for the IBM. Sorry, I know of no players for other platforms (which doesn't mean they don't exist...) aaplay.zip is a reliable player of such files, though I don't believe it is possible to speed up/slow down the frame rate. playfli.zip does allow one to adjust the frame rate as well as a couple of other nifty effects (fade in, etc) but I have had problems with it on some machines. waaplay.zip is a MSWindows player that I have no experience with. I whipped out of the digest to check the header, and sure enough, it's the original digest sent by Jessica weeks ago! Although I am often leary of sequels, particular in a publishing business that runs them into the ground, Bear has done some excellent sequels. In particular he tries very hard (and usually succeeds) in making the sequel even more creative than the original. If I'm not popping up on Ecto as often as I have in the past, in part it's because I have a new toy at home. I recently bought a friend's PC clone since he was leaving for Germany to be an exchange student (German ectophiles can keep an eye out for Joe Greer). However, I'm not running MS-DOS. I'm running Linux, which is a freeware version of UNIX that runs on PC clone hardware with a 386 or better processor. Because I have been a UNIX weenie for a long time, I have gone into full computer geek mode for the past week, fiddling with my new machine, tuning this, compiling that, and generally having more fun with a home computer than I've had in years. I highly recommend Linux to those of you saddled with a clone of your own who have a disdain for DOS. For you UNIX weenies out there who are interested, I'm dialing in to my usual mail hangout from my new machine, using a 131x43 character xterm window running on my home machine. If the completely improbable happened and I became bored doing this, I could pop up an xtetris game to play over the top of my xterm window :-). ObHappy: I loaned my copies of _Warpaint_ and _Equipoise_ to a friend to check out. KLCC is apparently playing Happy often enough that other people in town are hearing about it; my friend had one of her friends ask if she'd ever heard of Happy Rhodes.
