Merow all..this looks like it might shape up to be a Tome about Travels by Courtney the Cat.... anyone not interested in an exhausting account of what i have been doing these past 6 weeks can delete here!! But i hope you dont... First of all, I want to start with a formal apology to anyone i havent replied to yet or been able to reach..you wouldnt believe the number of things that are piling up and SCREAMING for my attention!! I am extremely confused on who is offering what to whom and why and when and where to get it and etc etc..my blondeness is showing again i guess! ANyone..many kudos to Klaus and Claudia for the excellent ECTO party..you guys dont know what you missed..Hopefully some of my fuzzy blue posts from late March will clue you in to what a great time was had by all!! Now, on to the travel details..this is for all those people out there who keep asking.."so, did you have a good time?" "Yes." "Where did you go?" "Maybe you should ask where DIDNT i go." here goes .... After i left Germany..i had a MASSIVE head cold and was very tired since we had packed soooo much into a tiny fun filled weekend! I made my way back to England via the train to the Belgium ferry port in Oostende (barely making it in time before my train pass ran out at midnight..i was 6 minutes over). Once in Oostende however, the anticipated 2:00 am ferry was not going at 2:00 am...it was going at *6:00 A.M.*..that meant that yours truly got to bunk out in a lovely train station for the first time (and hopefully the last) time in her life...combine that with a heavy head cold and a DESPERATE need for a bath, and you come up with one VERY unhappy cat. Well..the ferry finally sailed and I made it back safely to England..to make SOME of this story short..i will skim over the bad stuff and only hit the good. I checked into my little hotel (glorified hostel) and hit the tub and then the bed,...i found out i was rooming with two really neat girls from AUstralia (Perth, Martin) and a guy..i have NO idea who this guy is cuz whenever he would come in *I* would be asleep and whenever I would come in *HE* would be asleep..well, i explored London and had a wonderful time doing my own thing and anticipating my mothers arrival..On Friday the something of early April (long day already friends..=)) I met with Stephen Thomas and we had a LOVELY time hopping ON AND OFF AND ON AND OFF the tubes of London *groan*. But we DID catch a lovely concert that night..Tori Amos..i was about to die on the spot when she finally came out and the reality that *I* was sitting IN LONDON watching TORI AMOS perform LIVE hit me..i must confess right now that i have only been to one other TRUE concert..(rem when i was a senoir in high school)..thus, Tori blew me away!Sat passed in a haze cuz i was starting to relapse from mono and was needing alot of naps again..and then SUNDAY arrived..Moms (hereafter referred to as moneybags and good food provider) plane came in and i was sooooo happy! Enough of the reunion stuff but just know thats its been 7 MONTHS since i last saw my family or boyfriend or best friends..even though i have the privilege of talking to them over this thing..anyway..Mom and i started off on a whirlwind tour of the U.K. We went to Cardiff for two days to stay with a friend of mine, then we went to Edinburugh for two days, then we went to N.Ireland for two days, again to be with friends, then we went to Dublin for one day (got to see the Book of Kells for all those interested out there), then we swung over to N.Wales to be with friends and managed to stay there long enough to catch our breaths! We had to move back into my college dorm on Tues the 21st but that Thursday we were right back in London and Mom left last Friday morning..while in London we caught three shows..Miss Saigon, Phantom of the Opera (swoon!!!) and Starlight Express(YEAH!).... phew..my poor fingers are exhausted!!!! I am home now for a little while at least...I plan on going back to Scotland to look for my ancestors gravestones...i have this "thing" for cemeteries ya know...and also want to swing by York, Stratford Upon Avon, Canterbury to see Stephen again, Stonehenge, Glastonbury, and Tintern Abbey.. all this before i leave on June the 17th. ANyone want anything from any of those places let me know and we will negotiate something!!! I am gonna go ahead and try to send this now before quote burps me off the system...more later if my fingers recover!!!! MEW! Courtney! ======================================================================== Date: 28-APR-1992 13:02:59.15 From: MTARR@eagle.wesleyan.edu Subject: Tori Amos at the Iron Horse Hi! Last night I had the intense pleasure of seeing Tori Amos live at the Iron Horse Music Hall in Northampton, MA. I think I'm beginning to come back down now. ;) Jessica, Greg, woj, Sue, Dave Steiner and a few others were there too, and it was a great evening. If you think her music is intense on the album, you'll be blown away by her intensity live, as I was. She was up there on stage with her piano and voice and a bottle of Poland Spring water and nothing else, but that's all she needed. The full arrangements on the album almost seem superfluous now that I've experienced everything but "Girl" live with just a piano accompaniment. She began the 80-minute show with "Little Earthquakes", which convinced me more than ever that she is indeed a witch- she was almost satanic in her movements and expression while singing this song. As the show went on she seemed to settle in a bit more, but none of the emotion was lost. When she took the microphone into her hand to begin "Me And A Gun" she introduced it by explaining the "Thelma and Louise" connection, then dedicated it to "a 14-year old Irish girl", as she's been doing throughout the tour. Four minutes later when the song was over, nobody in the room was unaffected by it, and Tori herself had had trouble getting all the way through it. It made me wonder how many takes it took before she was able to record it in the studio! She played everything from _Little Earthquakes_ except "Girl", as well as "Upside Down" from one of the CD5s and her covers of "Angie", "Smells Like Teen Spirit", and another one whose title escapes me now. Her Nirvana cover was particularly amusing- it proved to me just what a silly song it is! :) Afterwards I got to meet her, along with everybody else who thought to go downstairs into the basement where the "green room" was and see what was up. On stage she had been so wrapped up in what she was singing that she could hardly bring herself to say anything in between songs, but downstairs she was warm, friendly, witty, and very willing to chat with her fans. She's definitely a good witch. :) I had brought my CD single of "Silent All These Years", which I appropriated from WESU a couple weeks ago, and she signed it. She also signed the poster Jessica appropriated from the wall, and everybody's CDs and stuff. :> I don't think I'll ever forget the "eeeeeeeep!" noise that emanated from the room when Jessica went in, and when we all said, "You all right in there, Jess?" she shouted back, "IT WASN'T ME!" So now we can all say that our Ecto-goddess sounds like Tori Amos. ;> (Tori isn't a very big person. Must be something about short female singers...) If you ever have the chance to see her play live, TAKE IT. I think this is one talent we're going to be seeing a lot of, and I for one am immensely looking forward to the rest of her career. ====================================================================== |Meredith Tarr "Get to the point you sappy wimps| |Wesleyan University I haven't got a lifetime | |Middletown, CT Simplicity is beauty | |USA, Earth Are there poets less sublime?" | |mtarr@eagle.wesleyan.edu -Happy Rhodes | ====================================================================== ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 28 Apr 92 13:01:02 MDT From: dbx@olympic.atmos.colostate.edu (Doug Burks) Subject: Names to faces Greetings, Let's see how I can do in identifying the people in Greg's two pictures: Picture 1: head on the van. --Happy is easily identifiable in the center of this picture. Meredith says: > She began the 80-minute show with "Little Earthquakes", which > convinced me more than ever that she is indeed a witch- she was almost > satanic in her movements and expression while singing this song. i have long felt (and this is not an original idea) that much of the "bad witch" tradition comes from a fear of independent women, whether that independence is expressed politically, culturally, sexually... well, Tori is certainly working outside of the cultural mainstream of popular music, she is consistent and persistent in addressing 'political' issues of interest to her, and sexually, well, she is quite expressive -- if i had been sitting any closer i might not have survived ;) "witch" isn't a bad term in everyone's book, but personally, i'd just call her amazing... > She played everything from _Little Earthquakes_ except "Girl", as well > as "Upside Down" from one of the CD5s and her covers of "Angie", > "Smells Like Teen Spirit", and another one whose title escapes me now. > Her Nirvana cover was particularly amusing- it proved to me just what > a silly song it is! :) "Upside Down" was great -- better than the recorded version for sure. "Smells" and "Angie" were also much more successful live... and i don't think SLTS is *so* silly ;) the cover of Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" was entertaining, but her introduction to it was even better... can anyone remember it well enough to reproduce it? > On stage she had been so wrapped up in what she was singing that she > could hardly bring herself to say anything in between songs, but > downstairs she was warm, friendly, witty, and very willing to chat > with her fans. i got the feeling she would have talked longer, but her tour manager (?or whatever he was?) pushed us along (and *then* started up a conversation with Simon Cooper about where he was from (Simon and the tour manager are both from the London area originally) -- *we* had to drag Simon away ;) > I don't think I'll ever forget the "eeeeeeeep!" noise that emanated > from the room when Jessica went in, and when we all said, "You all > right in there, Jess?" she shouted back, "IT WASN'T ME!" I'm gonna have to do this in bits, the liklihood of getting any amount of time in a row is low :) A while back, meredith had posted a possible explanation for why tori suddenly got so popular and was being advertised/pushed so heavily.. She said, "tori is a witch". Well, a few moments into "Little Earthquakes" (with which she opened the show), i found myself completely entranced and in awe, and the thought that went through my head "Wow, she *is* a witch!".. I was amused to find, after the show, that meredith had been thinking the same thing :) jessica ======================================================================== From: Martin Dougiamas Subject: Birthdays. Date: Wed, 29 Apr 92 12:23:41 WST Happy belated birthdays to those whose birthdays I've missed. To make sure I don't do it again... I whipped up the following calendar file from the official birthday list. I thought others might find it useful. For Unix neophytes, a short explanation: If you're using some type of Unix system, put the following lines into a file called "calendar" in your home directory. Every time the program calendar(1) is run, it will print out the appropriate lines from this file. Thus a good idea is to run it from your .login so the "calendar" file gets checked for dates every time you login. ----->8----->8----->8----->8----->8----->8----->8----->8----->8----->8----->8-- January 3 1967 - Ectophile Jeanne Schreiter has a birthday today! And there are plenty of concerts where there aren't neat things to get. But most of the artists ecto talks the most about are ones who's shows tend to be smaller, and who tend to take well to fans and their interest/appreciation. Also, a smaller show in a smaller club is more liekly to have stuff on the walls that you can get if you're quick after the show. that's where individual personality comes into play. I admit I'm relatively good at "getting" things ;) jessica ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
