The Cosmic Vagabond raps: > Another really excellent album I found this Thursday is "Shimmering, Warm > & Bright", the new release from Bel Canto. I haven't heard of them before, > except on Ecto, and I was not disappointed. To my surprise the ME/S-review > of that album not only contains, but starts with the words "Kate Bush", > saying that she would surely enjoy that album very much. A agree that many > people, especially in Ecto, would enjoy it, but I can't understand why Kate > is mentioned. I've seen several reviews saying that Bel Canto can sound like Kate Bush, in particular "Spiderdust", which one magazine said could have been on "The Dreaming". I think all female singers using their voice in `unusual' ways get compared to Kate. Anneli Drecker has certainly evolved, and the girlish sound of her voice is gone, for good and for worse. Anyway, the album is very, very good. Polished, and with some great melodies. I recommend getting the single "Shimmering, warm and bright" with the Alien Nation remixes as well. I hardly never go to the discos, but I'm a sucker for dance tunes when I'm bicycling or walking. It helps me keep the pace up :). The single also contains another good song called "Keena mareeme". My sister said, "why didn't they put it on the album instead, it's one of the best songs!?". In fact, she says the latter part about every one of them :) Hmm, in how many languages have they done songs now? At least English, French, German, Norwegian and Arabic(?)... i first read about bel canto a year ago in a post by woj, actually, so i will use this opportunity to send a big thank you! to woj. Sorry about the lack of Happy content, but I haven't got around to ordering the CD(s?) yet. Is it possible to order 1st4 now? | Subject: To my broomstick partners :-) hi ! Thanks to Jeff Burka for mentioning TIM, Loreena McKennitt, Sarah McLachlan and Enya in one sentence! (We seem to have a very similar musical taste! And I also have a little sister who listens to New Kids on the Block, but also likes _Warpaint_ and _Never For Ever_. I guess it's too late to wish you a happy birthday now. I'll have to print out that birthday list and stick it to the wall! :-) And thanks to my brain :-) for associating TIM with The Innocence Mission, I now have their self-titled album. I find it strange that Dave Michaels complains about too much traffic, especially now Vickie isn't around. :-( I'll do my best to write a very short review. :-) You'll just have to listen to this one yourself, if you haven't already done so and if you feel you're up to music that combines the best of Kate Bush, Laurie Freelove and Tori Amos. :-) :-) :-) If you need more information, you could take advantage of the wisdom accumulated in the ecto files. A quick scan trough my ecto index file yields that it would probably be fruitful to look around in digests #29 and #99. No, I'm really serious about this, although I don't know yet where this album will end up on my list of favourite albums, the first impressions are very promising! Play it loud and read the lyrics! Klaus, thank you for mailing the card to Happy. Perhaps it will arrive approximately together with my order for the 1st4 on CD, so she'll see the connection. :-) Albert ++ `I know I'm sounding insane' :: Happy Rhodes ======================================================================== Date: 27-APR-1992 01:49:08.09 From: MTARR@eagle.wesleyan.edu Subject: Happy Sampler News Hi! Since no one has seemed to jump at the chance to put together the Official Ecto Happy Sampler, and I've already agreed to do a few for some other Ectophiles, why not open it up to the general forum? So, (fanfare please), I announce the availability of the (Un)Official Happy Sampler! All you have to do is send me e-mail BEFORE MAY 3. I have a limited time and limited use of a double-tape deck, so I can't be spending the rest of my life filling the orders that I'm sure are going to flood in. (:) ) Once you have informed me that a tape is on the way, send either a 90 or a 100 Minute tape to me at: 52 Home Avenue Middletown, CT 06457 USA Please include something for return postage, and if you could use packaging that will be easy to reuse (ie not writing in permanent marker all over the mailer) I'd appreciate it. I will make the tape as soon as I can, in order of receipt of tape, and return the finished product as soon as is humanly possible. If you send a 90-minute tape, this is what you will get: SIDE A Rainkeeper Oh The Drears Possessed RHODES VOL. I Case of Glass Step Inside Come Here Let Me Know, Love RHODES VOL. II Where Do I Go? Considering the response woj got to his Favorite Happy Songs poll, I decided to bag democracy on this one. :) Of course, if there are any songs you would like to hear in place of a specific cut, let me know when you place your order. So decide which version you want, and send me e-mail between now and Sunday. All transactions will be confidential, so all you Ectophiles who have never actually heard Happy's music but are too embarrassed to admit it, come out of the lurking woodwork and let me help you finally understand what the hell we're all blathering on about! :> "Experience the other side..." Right. Between Tony Robbins ads. Like I'm really gonna watch. So at about 3am Saturday night, I'm there and the TV is on and I think, waht the hey, and I switch to 50 and they're actually showing videos. So I leave it there, figuring there's just no chance, right. And I'm reading some newspaper thinking well, maybe I should put a tape in just in case. Nawwww, no way. Well, you guessed it. The very next song starts with those piano notes and I utter various expletives, pummel the VCR, eject the tape that's in there (it took about forever), plop in another tape and hit record, all in one sweeping motion. I missed the first 30 seconds about. But boy is this video great. I've watched it, oh, I dunno, maybe 100 times since then? I think its the best video I've ever seen (even better than Kate's). It's just perfect for the song. And I love the way here eyes and face move. So effective. So now I'm kicking myself for having missed her on Letterman (which I *usually* watch!). And of course on MTV (since I don't get cable). I guess it's time to call Vickie :-). I've been listening to Loreena. I really love her latest album and I also like her first one (don't have the second). At first I wasn't sure but now I am. I also picked up Midge Ure's latest (from last year), Pure. This is instantly gratifying. The sound is very full and contagious. Check him out. Less than a week to Tori in Mpls, and I can't wait to hear the happy concert. After giving up on MTV Europa ever sending KaTe's "Rocket Man" or anything from Tori Amos or Sarah McLachlan, I recorded two hours of videos from a european cable station called "Super" during the night. To my surprise I found the following clips on that tape the next morning: - Tori Amos, "China" - Sarah McLachlan, "Into the Fire" The "China" clip explained how the cover of it's CD5 release was created, and "Into the Fire" seems to be only half of the title. From watching the video I would say that the complete title should be "Out of the mud, into the fire". :) Their next step to increase the quality of the program would be to learn how to write her name, as the clip was titled "Sarah Mc Laghlan". I've also seen that "Solace" was advertised for in a german music magazine. I'm wondering about something this advert said, namely that Joni Mitchell was a guest musician on that album. I can't find anything about that on the album, and I would be extremely surprised if she was left out if she was involved. Does someone of you know anything about that? Tori Amos now also gets some airplay on german radio station, and I was also surprised this morning to hear "The Big Ones Get Away" from Buffy Sainte-Marie's new album. Seems we're waking up. :) ___________________________________________________________ ( "Tell me all the plans you have for the great beyond. ) ) Will you be physical again, or be a cosmic vagabond."
