(This in itself should prob- ably reassure me that I'm not hopelessly addicted to the net, even though it often seems to me like ecto, and to a lesser extent the net in general, is the focal point of my day.) My subjective sense is that Vickie will eventually return to us, hopefully with the demands of her day job cutting somewhat into her ecto time. In consideration whereof, the rest of us should probably become more active in the mechanics of some of the sundry ecto projects (HGP, HBP, etc.). Let's think positive, though; the H*P tapes wouldn't be exactly the same without Vickie's commentaries, and I consider it likely that she'll be in on it. As a practical matter, however, we ought to come up with Plan B just in case. If there's any practical lesson in this affair for all of us, it may be that--to paraphrase what Linda Ellerbee's son said about TV: It's not brain surgery, it's only ecto. More in response to things on ecto in general in the near future. I must now get busy on the task of getting home over the flood that's now occurring underneath downtown Chicago. It seems to me that this creates an opening for the ecto industrial empire to gain a foothold with a number of markets (vegetarians, animal rightists, the cardiacally concerned, etc.) by coming out with the ALLY ALLY OXENFREE line of beefless beef prod- ucts, with the soybeans or whatever replete with the genuine taste of beef. (ah there, SPY Magazine :-) ) The story in the Philadelphia Inquirer about Happy the day of her concert there stated that she looked like someone out of a Modigliani painting, or words to that effect. So naturally it caught my eye when the Chicago Sun-Times ran a story about Andrea Marcovicci, a cabaret singer whose main stock-in-trade apparently is 1940's standards, and who was then appearing locally, which stated that _she_ looked like someone out of a Modigliani painting, or words to that effect. I would have checked this out empirically, but the Art Institute of Chicago is currently shut down for the time being, in considera- tion of the current leak in the Chicago River (arguably the only great Americ- an river to both flow backward, and leak from the bottom) and the consequent flooding under much of the look. (The way things go in this day and age, though, it would not have surprised me if Ms. Marcovicci had turned out to really be Andrea Markowitz, childhood playmate of Amy Camus back in the outer boroughs of New York City :-). I have no idea how endemic it is for women in that neck of the woods to look like someone out of a Modigliani painting, nor indeed what people in Modigliani paintings typically look like.) While I fully agree with the sentiment behind Klaus (I think it was) publishing a German translation of "Happy Birthday" in these pages, the trans- lation itself came across to me as rather _ersatz_-sounding. I was reminded of a song which came up periodically in my elementary school German classes, which was represented as the one actually typically sung in the German-speak- ing countries on these and other celebratory occasions. It went, in the un-desexed original form stil commonly used in the early 1960's: "Hoch soll er leben/Hoch soll er leben/Drei mal hoch." (For some reason, or so we were taught, those who wanted to be funny could amend the final line to "Hoch, hoch, hoch." Either way, it seems like something that would have dovetailed nicely with the psychedelic culture of the latter half of the same decade. :-)) So at the risk of sounding like the French Academy of the German language, let me simply say about those who are birthdaying around this point in time: Hoch sollen sie leben.
