I can't honestly say I was surprised. I found the way she spoke about Ecto on the "Ecto SiG" tape rather worrying at the time. In common with many people I spend far too much of my time in net-related activities and I can appreciate how hard it might be to keep a sense of perspective when what's going on on the net is the most interesting thing in your life. With a single person I think this kind of obsession can be expected to pass over after a while, but when somebody else's needs enter the equation the whole thing becomes a lot more complex. I'm sad Vickie is gone. Without her I don't believe Ecto would ever have happened. But I'm sure that what Chris has done is for the best in their situation. I'd like to think that maybe sometime we might be rejoined by a new Vickie with a better sense of proportion about the place of the net in their lives, but quite honestly I doubt it. Chris's remark about us being her drinking companions hit the mark. If Vickie were to regain net access I'm afraid the renewed exposure would cause her to revert to her bad old behaviour patterns. Just like an ex-alcoholic who mustn't touch a drop ever again. It's a pity there's no net equivalent to a soft drink, unless the answer is read-only access. Well this bar is certainly going to be quieter and less fun without her presence. On a more practical note, is anybody going to volunteer to take over coordination of an HBP tape? I'd like to volunteer myself but I think the costs and delays of transatlantic mail (aquatic snails?) rule that out. So how about it somebody? I'm sure Vickie would have wanted us to carry on the tradition, even though it is rather a short-lived one! -- Regards Steve Fagg ( S.L.Fagg@bnr.co.uk +44-279-402437 ) BNR Europe Ltd., London Road, Harlow, Essex, CM17 9NA, UK *** "Better drowned than duffers. Steve had the right of it in his final note: > On a more practical note, is anybody going to volunteer to take over > coordination of an HBP tape? or in more general terms: there is a lot we all can do to support Happy and her music, so let's get to it! tgif (thank goodness it's footahday!) -greg -- gb10@gte.com -- "words weren't made for cowards" -- HR ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 10 Apr 92 14:42:23 MDT From: dbx@ventana.atmos.colostate.edu (Doug Burks) Subject: Fluff (tm) Greetings, One worried e-mail letter made me realize that I didn't phrase something too well in my post this morning. I have received a total of seven orders for the Suspended in Gaffa tapes, not zero as that post could be read. What I was referring to was that a number of people have sent me e-mail saying they were going to order some tapes, and I haven't heard from them. Foreign orders obviously may still be struggling through a number of postal systems, but what about you Americans out there!? Anyway, I'll post a dubbing status report next week, probably Monday. Finally, I would like to say a few words about Vickie. First, Vickie is a proven survivor, and she will be back. She'll have to drop some of her myriad Ecto activities, but I hope some of us will pick them up. While I lack to equipment to put together the HBP tape, I'll certainly be willing to handle the dubbing and distribution. [Given the situation, I think "deeper understanding" is an ill choice of words.] Yesterday, Vickie left a message on my answering machine, and while she didn't address the issue directly, she seems to have accepted the cutoff, though she sounds frustrated by it. Besides, from what Vickie has told me, I doubt this is seriously straining her relationship with Chris. She loves and trusts Chris deeply, and my impression is that she relies on him to reel her in when she goes too far. Two wonderful things from one radio station in one day. As i mentioned yesterday, WPRB, the princeton university station, played a mouth music song (I get to listen to the radio on my way to and from work and just baout only then). So last night, driving home, I checked WPRB, and they were in the middle of my very favorite Marillion song "warm wet circles", and it went on and on and they played up to and including "white russian". When I got home i called them and thanked them:) the DJ sounded pretty pleased :) I also asked him if he was playing from CD or LP. For some reason, the music sounded *especially* good, and i dind't know if it was just me being in such a perfect mood for it and being happy to hear it on the radio, or if it was some previously unknown-to-me recording. But the more i listened the more i was certain it was the same recording i'm famliar with, it wasn't a live version at all, but it just sounded *different*, like it was mixed slightly differently perhaps, it was hard to put a finger on. I decided my best guess would be that it was the LP and not the CD, and sure enough, it was an LP. weird! I want to get the LP now, and compare the two on the same stereo system. i've heard plenty of people say that lp's jsut sound better.. maybe it's true! (for some music, anyway). hmmph. aaaaaaaaaaanyway, I am quite pleased with WPRB.. i just wish they could be more consistent!!!
