After some months of reading things about Sarah McLachlan which made me think that I would really like her music, if I could only find her albums, I'm finally in a position to judge with my own ears. And I'm not at all disappointed! Thanks to Courtney, who recorded two Sarah McLachlan songs from her album Touch after a dub of Loreena McKennitt's album Parallel Dreams, I didn't have to think twice when I saw Solace in an Amsterdam record store last Friday. I think Sarah McLachlan has a very beautiful voice, even though my mother doesn't like the upper part of her range (she doesn't like Diamanda Galas either... :-). Somehow this brings me to the subject of chills. I've no trouble at all to get chills from the music I listen to. In fact, there isn't much music I like which doesn't give me chills. Is this normal? From what I've read here and in gaffa, I get the impression that for some people chills are very rare and special. Well, I guess we're all wired differently... I like the music on Solace very much. It's kind of folky, and a bit darker sounding than Loreena McKennitt's music, who puts little sparkling pieces of gold in it with her harp. Whereas Loreena is more like a story-teller, who can make you cry by telling you about the terrible fate of the Lady of Shalott, Sarah's lyrics are very personal and very depressing. But I like that. My favourite songs from Solace so far are Back Door Man and Mercy, and I might as well throw in Into The Fire and Black. Did one of you notice that Sarah sounds like Tori Amos when she sings "bleed" on her album Touch in the song Vox? (I hope that's the title... it's the song that starts with "In the desert of my dreams I saw you there...") Is there any news of an European tour by Sarah McLachlan? Klaus asked me about the availability of Loreena McKennitt CDs in Europe. All I know is that her CD The Visit has invaded every record store over here in The Netherlands, and that Courtney also found a copy of it in Wales (I think), but didn't buy it because I already had bought one for her. The catalogue number is 9031- 75151-2, Warner Europe, made in Germany(!). I don't know how Courtney got the dub of Loreena's third album Parallel Dreams. I think her first three albums are only available in Canada. The liner notes to her fourth album The Visit say: Direct inquiries to: Quinlan Road Box 933, Stratford, Ontario Canada N5A 7M3 Barry writes: > [...] It was great being so close to Happy, to see her movements > with each song, to hear her music actually come out of her. Wow! I've listened to the concert tapes a few times now, and was under the impression that she was using a band. To think that all that music actually comes out of Happy... she really is!!! I hope it's on CD because it deserves the exposure, but I don't know if Nyro has enough pull with the hipster's to warrant a release. (Now if someone starts some "Laura Nyro is the American Piaf" hype or Kim Gordon covers "Stoned Soul Picnic" maybe that'll happen, but I wouldn't hold my breath.) At any rate, this is one album that deserves to be heard the way it was on vinyl, because it really is two suites, and we've lost that side-one-side-two thing in the age of ceedee. At any rate, it's worth finding in any form--the transition from the end of the chilling "Been on a Train" to the opening notes of "Up on the Roof" is one of the great glories of American pop music. Actually, Laura Nyro's entire Columbia catalog is available on CD with the exception of her last Columbia release, "Mothers Spiritual". That title is available on CD in Europe so it's attainable as an import. Her two post-Columbia releases, "New World" (I think that's the title) and "Live at the Bottom Line" were released on CD by Gold Castle but I believe both titles are sadly out-of-print. I have run across copies in CD cut-out bins so you may be able to find a copy. -- Spencer Kantor Bell Communications Research sek@nvuxr.cc.bellcore.com {bcr, bellcore}!nvuxr.cc.bellcore.com!seK "Bottom Line" was released on Cypress/A&M, not Gold Castle. I have never heard of the other, unless it's the soundtrack for a documentary on American Indians, which came out in the late '80s, for which LN did the score. The former may still be readily available in the regular racks, so look there as well as the cutout bins. Hi y'all - I've just been told that I'm going to see Tori Amos at the Theater Of The Living Arts (TLA) on Friday evening April 24th. Tickets are $12.50 and apparently good seats are still available. Actually, you can't get a bad seat at the TLA...it seats about 200 or so and has *great* acoustics. The TLA is on South St. in Philly. The box office phone number is (215)922-1011. Box office opens at noon, you can charge-it and they will mail you your tickets. Are any other Ectofolks going to this one? I missed the MTV Tori special...does anyone know if they are going to replay it? Or...if you taped it, would you be willing to send me the tape to copy? I guess I like her but I'm bugged that she's getting so much airplay and Happy isn't. And, in my opinion, Happy is soooooo much better. Oh well. (very funny scenario there) -walked around to the entrance of the Aud. where we could hear Happy & crew practicing through the stage door (which was occasionally opened) Suzanne came walking around about to burst a bubble (she was _really_ nervous) but talked to us for a while regardless. Greg kept trying to get in but David the organizer of the concert (jerkwad) kept pushing him out. Many "important" (massive sarcasm here) people entered the building inc. Happy's mother (who is an important person :) ), but we were left out in the cold :*( -finally Greg was allowed in, I snuck in tow with the vcr, which meant I got to keep my ticket as a whole unit rather than getting it all torn up - sorry you lot muahhahaha :) -jessica and i sorta kept the the fourth and fifth rows to ectophiles although one dude got in....was he an ectophile?? (mystery.) -then the concert began...and well I was too busy watching Happy this time and trying to get pics, and just being totally enraptured in the music to notice anything in particular. I did notice that the band seemed 'stiffer' than at the Albany show. Their stage presence was tighter. (well I would be like that too in front of an audience of people who didn't seem to have much knowledge of Happy.) The concert was brilliant. I could hardly believe that Happy could be better than she was at Albany. The band was tighter, the music was just plain incredible - mystical. It was probably the single best concert I have ever seen - it toppled Mouth Music which had been my previous favorite by a long shot. The acoustics were kinda shoty...I could mostly hear only out of the left speakers - I can't imagine how mindblowing they would sound in a place with really good acoustics..they would probably just skyrocket us all out of the galexy (to phobos maybe). The only distracting thing was the sound/light guy who kept popping up in the middle of the stage where the curtains were open (but it didn't deter the music at all...it was just weird seeing him pop in and out occasionally). At any rate I can only add to what other people have said...the concert was pure magic and that's all there is to say. :) -after the show we went to Penn Tower for the get together. I think we chatted with all the band members (i didn't talk to Kevin or Mark tho) but I did ask Ray if he took on students...said I wanted him to be my bass instructor, he is a really cool guy. Martha and Kelley are really interesting too. It's obvious they all adore Happy, heck who doesnt. Happy came around and had everybody introduce themselves, she signed some stuff, and otherwise looked like she was having a jolly time. For a self claimed shy person she was incredibly articulate and very self-aware - she's just a very cool person. -the rest of the trip is just the slow fall from perfection. we were kindly set up for the night and had a lovely bagel breakfast...then we drove bakc in the snowstorm from hell, listened to lots of great music, pondered over the aerodynamics of the van (and why it was always the signs on the left side that fell off), watched multiple accidents happen in front of our faces or just prior to our passing - one i wont forget is the van turned upside down in the median with the driver/passenger climbing out the top - pretty incredible stuff...... that's about it...not very descriptive im afraid, but hey like I said all the words I can say have been said in so many words by others...the whole trip was fantastic and THANKS to everyone!!!! Suspended in Gaffa Collection IV: International Sampler Norway: > Kirsten Braten Berg Vajevise Nordisk Sang > Kirsten Braten Berg Min Kvedarlund Nordisk Sang I *love* this album! It's a collection of songs from various singers and musicians. These songs happen to be my favorites, but I recommend the whole album if you like them. Traditional music at it's best. Ireland: > Noirin Ni Riain Lairin an Ghearaltaigh Stor Amhran > Noirin Ni Riain Seacht nDolas na Maighdine Muire Stor Amhran Many, *many* thanks to Chip for lending me this album so I could hear these 2 songs. Oh, the whole album is wonderful, but these are the ones that make me melt and sweep me off into another era. The male voices on the second song are the Monks of Glenstal Abbey. (See? I'm not sexist! :-) Portugal: > Fernanda Maria Ouandnas Soltas Fados > Fernanda Maria Viram por ai o Fado? Fados Thanks to IED for these. He sent 5 songs on a sampler tape, and I almost put all 5 on this tape, but I was trying to keep to 2 per artist. Her voice is rich, thick and very expressive. I never knew I liked this kind of music until I heard Fernanda sing it. Japan: > Miharu Koshi Children's Song Tutu > Miharu Koshi L'Acqua Sonora Boy Soprano I need to do a Japanese sampler sometime. It was hard to choose between Miraru, Akiko Yano, Sandii & the Sunsetz, Sonoko and a bunch of others. Thanks again to IED. He used to be heavily into female Japanese vocalists and sent me a couple different samplers of them. Czechoslovakia: > Iva Bittova Oboe/The Advent Song Iva Bittova > Iva Bittova China Iva Bittova This woman is *WONDERFUL*!! She writes or co-writes all the music, plays violin and viola and sings. This is not "traditional" music at all, it's, hmm....well....ah, Iva's music. Hard to describe, just listen. The entire album is fascinating, fun and interesting. There are actually 3 songs here, but "The Advent Song" was so short I just had to cheat. You couldn't live your life without hearing "China" at least once anyway. On a future comp I'll have to put on the one I hated leaving off, "Dance of the Vampires." All the titles are in Czech but luckily she added the English translations. France: > Anne Pigalle Via Vagabond Everything Could Be So Perfect > Anne Pigalle Souvenir D'un Paris Everything Could Be So Perfect You've already heard that I discovered Anne at the same time I discovered _Ecto_ and Diamanda Galas. Two songs here and one on the Collection tapes, and I *still* didn't play my all-time favorite, "Intermission-the Gods are Bored." Next time, I promise. Norway: > Agnes Buen Garnas/Jan Garbarak Innferd Rosensfole > Agnes Buen Garnas/Jan Garbarak Rosensfole Rosensfole Both songs are fairly short, especially the first one, but the rest of the songs are *very* long. If you like these, you'll love the whole album. The vocals are strictly traditional, the music is not. India: > Priya Khajuria/West India Company Alaap Shankara New Demons > Asha Bhosle/West India Company My Shooting Star New Demons The songs flow into each other so there's no way I could separate them, even if I wanted to (which I didn't.) The second song was used in the video I have of La La La Human Steps, which is one thing you'll see once I get my video Collection going. Those who have seen the video already (it's on video...Bette Midler's _Mondo Beyondo_ special) should know that the Indian woman singing in the video is *not* Asha Bhosle. It might be Priya, but I don't know for sure. India: > Najma Neend Koyi Qareeb > Najma Dil Laga Ya Tha Qareeb My favorite songs from my favorite album by her. Voice of an angel... Scotland: > Capercaillie [24] Puirt A Beul Crosswinds > Capercaillie [24] Alasdair Mhic Cholla Ghasda Sidewaulk Karen Matheson is the female vocalist of this group and I hear she has a solo record out. I haven't heard it but I want to, very badly. Those who have the Mouth Music album might recognize bits from "Puirt A Beul." Guinea, Africa: > Sona Diabate Kankele-Ti Girls of Guinea > Sona Diabate Horro Girls of Guinea I didn't shortchange African or South American artists on purpose. I meant this to be a 2-parter but got involved in the other tapes. The next wave should have artists from those continents.
