Collection Notes (2) Collection Notes (3) ectorhodes and highways ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 31 Mar 92 21:35:50 MET DST From: Albert Philipsen Subject: Party review :-) Hi! It's time for me to write something about the European ectophile party. I just came home, unpacked some of my things, listened to the Philly concert and World Cafe interview dubs (which sound excellent, thank you Greg and Klaus!), and now I'm sitting behind my keyboard and screen. I left home on Friday, March 27, approximately 9.30 am, and arrived in Wuppertal-Elberfeld at 2 pm, using two trains and the S-Bahn. It's a fascinating sight to look out of the back of the last wagon of the train and see the trees move away from you at a high speed. Klaus, Chip and Courtney where at the station to welcome me. They almost immediately recognised me, because the Happy key-ring was clearly visible. We said hello, and they helped to take my luggage to Klaus' car. I met Claudia and Michelle at Klaus', and was surprised by the fact that they all look like fairly normal people. We had lunch while listening to Ecto, after which we looked at pictures from overseas ectophiles, had some fuzzy blue drinks, and listened to some more music. Courtney gave me a dub of Loreena McKennitt's album Parallel Dreams. I've listened to it a few times, and I think it's as least as good as The Visit. Probably at this time the first message from the ectoparty was sent. We had dinner in a potato-restaurant, where I had two large potatoes covered with mushrooms and garlic sauce, and "Rote Gruetze" with ice-cream as desert. We talked about things like our country's holidays and the music we liked, especially Kate's. After this excellent dinner, we watched a video-tape I had brought with me, containing, among other interesting stuff, the Comic Strip episode Les Dogs, in which Kate can be seen playing a bride at a wedding. Then we went to sleep. (If I've left out any important events, I'm sure other party participants will fill them in.) The second day, during breakfast, we listened to The Visit by Loreena McKennitt, which I had brought with me for Courtney. Then Klaus, Claudia, Courtney and me went shopping for food for the following two days. In the afternoon, we watched an episode of Startreck. (Does anybody know if the phrase "my ears have parasites" is a reference to the scene where they put the parasites in the prisoners' ears?) Then we all listened to the World Cafe interview and the Kevin Bartlett songs with Happy on vocals that are on the other side of the tape. Just before we were ready to listen to the Philly concert, Steve VanDevender called, and we all had a little chat with him on the phone. Then we listened to the first tape of the concert, ending with Let Me Know, Love, and called Vickie. I promised her that she will get a copy of Les Dogs. (Vickie: I'll try to copy the whole tape, but it may take a while; and I meant All Things, not Terra Incognita of course...) Courtney made some excellent cheese-dip and we listened to the final part of the concert. It was somewhere at this time, that another message from the party was sent. After the concert, there was a short photo-session. Then we probably went to sleep. The third day, Courtney had prepared some kind of food consisting of scrambled eggs with mushrooms and vegetables, which tasted very good. Then we all went to the zoo. There where lots of animals to look at. Thanks to Courtney, we spent a lot of time with the cats, the small and big ones. I can't remember exactly what happened in the evening; we probably watched another episode of Startreck, listened to good music and did lots of dubbing. Martin from Australia phoned us that evening, I think. Claudia had made some kind of German vegetable soup, which I couldn't taste, because I had a little cold. The next evening, when we ate what was left over from the previous day, it tasted quite good. The fourth day, Courtney left very early in the morning. Klaus, Chip, Michelle and me made a trip to Cologne. We visited the dome, a bridge over the Rhine and two record stores. In the last one I bought tapes to dub the HGP. During the dubbing of the first side, a package arrived, containing two badly battered, but playable, tapes of the Albany concert. There was still enough time to dub the first tape (Klaus' car tape player chews on tapes) on high speed before we had to leave for the Sugarcubes concert. We listened to most of the first tape in the car, before and after the concert. I enjoyed most of the Sugarcubes concert. There were only two things which bothered me a little. The first two hours were extremely boring, consisting mostly of listening to a carefully compiled selection of uninteresting music and a performance by an Hungarian four person band called Sexepil (boys with guitars, a plane crash would have sounded more interesting, according to Claudia, if I heard her correctly). Secondly, the volume level was much too high. I actually went to the bathroom and put some toilet paper in my ears, which filtered out a lot of the high-frequency distortion and generally lowered the volume level. I had a lot of fun walking around with toilet paper sticking out of my ears. :-) The sound was still very muddy, though. I'm really not the kind of person who likes to jump around to the beat of the music and at the same time have his hearing damaged. (I love to dance around like a madman though, when nobody is looking...) I think I'll stick to my home stereo system and Stick around for Joy CD. We listened to the rest of the Albany concert at home and went to sleep, very late and tired. The last day, we woke up early, had breakfast and Klaus drove us (Chip, Michelle and me) to the station and we said goodbye. I listened to the Philly concert and World Cafe interview dubs during the trip. I took a lot of photographs. The last one I took looking out the back of the last wagon of the train. I really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of the party and Klaus' & Claudia's hospitality. I feel that we got to know each other much better than on the net. We also had a chance to listen to each other's music. I got introduced to some interesting artists and I think they all liked Nadieh's album Land Of Ta, which I played. So, now I've listened to the Philly concert three times, and once to the Albany concert. I can't really give a review of the concert, but judging from what's on the tapes I must say that I completely agree with the enthousiastic reviews. AMAZING! WOW! The songs, played live, are much more dynamic that the album versions. The Philly version of Oh The Drears for example has a climax at the end of the song, where the album version just fades away. (Don't get me wrong; I love the album versions. They're excellent for walkman listening (which I do a *lot*) in a noisy environment; you don't have to turn it up too loudly to hear everything.) I've heard the new songs only once, but I love them already. I can't wait for Klaus to send me dubs of the Albany concert. I just have to congratulate Jessica with her great voice. Her performance of Moving on the HGP really moved me... :-) The last few weeks have been really exiting and both emotionally and physically straining for me. If you thought that some of my earlier posts sounded like I wasn't in my right mind, you were probably right. :-) I'll go in hiding for some time now to read the contents of my mailbox. Katoozazai! Here's a few notes about the second collection. They're called "Suspended in Gaffa Collections" because I've played every single one of these songs on the show at one time or another. In some cases, many times. I don't think it was said, but there isn't any talking on any of these Collection tapes. These songs were recorded through the mixer board onto videotape (so I could "mix" and segue instead of "stop tape/start tape" dubbing) and then onto audiotape. In these notes, I didn't try to describe the music. >>>>> Suspended in Gaffa Collection II: Mish Smash > Jacqui Brooks The Cold Light of Day [?] This (along with 2 other songs by her) was on a tape sent to me a few years ago by IED. He didn't list the album title and I never got around to asking him about it. I *love* this song. > Anne Pigalle The 1000 Colours Waltz Everything Could Be So Perfect This album and a 12" are all I have by Anne Pigalle. I first heard her on a tape sent to John Reimers by Bob Davis that included all of _Ecto_ (which was the first time I heard it) and the Diamanda Gala "song" "Wild Women with Steak Knives." > Mary Coughlin Parade of Clowns Under the Influence One of the 2 MC CDs Jorn bought me when we were in London for the KaTe Kon- venTion. > Hex [3] Orpheus Circuit Vast Halos Not only my favorite song on this album, it fit so well with the previous 3 because they're all "Circus/Waltzy-like" songs. With weird lyrics... > Laurie Freelove Heaven on Earth Smells Like Truth My favorite song on the album. > Sheila Chandra Raqs Nada Brahma My all-time favorite SC song, she co-wrote it. I could listen to this 100 times in a row and never get tired of it. Of course, I like to think that all the songs on these tapes are "repeaters." > Judie Tzuke Sukarita Welcome to the Cruise This is one of three favorite songs by her (you know, depends on which one I'm listening to) but the only one I have on CD. Pronounced "Zuke." A very uneven artist, but she has many flashes of brilliance. > Toni Childs Daddy's Song House of Hope Incredible artist, incredible album, incredible song. The lyrics are chilling. Everytime I hear it, goose-bumps raise and tears well. > Sonny Southon So Proudly Falling through a Cloud Obscure and unknown, but this album has some fantastic songs on it. This is the best one. The music is great, her voice is powerful and the lyrics are brilliant, giving a controversial political issue an emotional voice. > Anna Palm Lake Arriving and Caught Up An uneven album, but not enough to keep me from recommending it. This is a hard-driving percussive/insane violins/on-the-edge-of-your-seat song. > Anna Palm Air for Sharon Arriving and Caught Up This is a very short, beautiful violin piece. Anna writes, sings & plays the violin. > Kirsty MacColl Innocence (the Guilt Mix) Innocence (12") One of my favorite re-mixes by one of my favorite (after K/J/H) artists. > blackgirls [12] moonflower procedure I love this group and this song, but it may take getting used to by some. > Brenda Kahn This Land Is My Land Goldfish Don't Talk Back Who is this woman, Kiri asks? I don't know, but I like her. > Exene Cervenka Good Luck Old Wives Tale Lyrics are dark (no suprise) but I almost used "Coctail Trees" so count your blessings :-). > Mary Margaret O'Hara My Friends Have Miss America I lent out my CD and had to use an old badly-recorded tape. Boo Hoo. I love this whole album. She's just *wonderful*!! > Sonya Hunter Conversation Favorite Short Stories Don't know who she is either, but she's a *lot* of fun! > Lisa Germano Simply Tony/Dig My Own Grave ... Moon Palace The same person who has Mary Margaret also has Lisa's CD. Luckily I had a dub of one of my Kansas City shows where I featured the album. Again, it was *SO* hard to choose songs from this album, because they're all excellent. I cheated and put 2 on. The first is a short instrumental. > Crash Vegas [13] Julia Rain Red Earth Note correction of band name (Vegas). One of the more laid back songs on the album. > Texas [14] Beliefs Mother's Heaven Amazing voice. I love nearly every song from both their albums, but the slow, almost bluesy, songs are my favorites. > Wendy MaHarry Too Busy Looking Out the Window Fountain of Youth Actually, I like her first album best, but couldn't decide which song to put on. This is my favorite from the second album. > Mouth Music [15] Seinn Oi Mouth Music Just in case anyone hasn't heard this band yet...btw, this song is Happy's favorite from the album. Mine too. More to come... Vickie ======================================================================== From: katefans@chinet.chi.il.us (Chris n Vickie) Subject: Collection Notes (3) Date: Tue, 31 Mar 92 18:24:43 CST Vickie here....and here's another: >>>>> Suspended in Gaffa Collection III: Voices > These are women I feel have distinctive, unusual, unique voices, voices I > love. This tape is hardly definitive though, because I could do a multiple > volume set of voices. Happy and Kate and Jane didn't even make it, though > they'd be if this tape weren't directed to people who are already fans, > generally speaking. I wish I had included Kate, Jane & Happy anyway, just in case anyone makes dubs for friends. > Grace Darling [16] Cursing a Muse (Invocation) Grace Darling I love this album. I love Val's voice. I love this song! > Marta Sebestyen Muzsikas Vetettem Violat I know, she's on the HGP, but it wasn't this song, which is one of my favorites. > Dead Can Dance [17] Frontier (2) Lonely Is an Eyesore Which song to use was my biggest problem here. > Yma Sumac Chuncho Voice of the Xtabay Not my all-time favorite song, but I love it, and following it with "Bird Song" is my all-time favorite segue. The first time I did it (back in the summer of 1988) it was a complete accident, I wasn't even really paying attention to what I was doing. Perfect!!! I've used it multiple times since then. I can't hear this song now without hearing Lene come in at the end. > Lene Lovich Bird Song Flex The first song I heard, the first video I saw, and still my very favorite. > Rainbirds [18] Big Fat Cat Two Faces *No* better song to show off Katharina's amazing voice!! > Aster Aweke Y'shebellu Aster Long, but mesmerizing. I saw her perform this song live on _Night Music_ and melted into the couch, eyes wide, mouth hanging open, entranced. > Bessie Smith Nobody Knows When You're Down and Out The Collection I usually dislike Blues but sometimes artists and songs pop out at me and hit me upside the head. Like this one. > Concrete Blonde [19] Beware of Darkness Concrete Blonde Which song should I play? Aaaak! This was the result of "random play." > Annette Peacock This Feel Within X-Dreams I played this song on SiG 5. Thanks to Annette, I got into Happy. > Nico These Days Chelsea Girl Any song would have been fine. This is one of my favorites. > The Innocence Mission [20] Medjugorje The Innocence Mission Again, any song would have been fine. This was picked because I liked the way the Caterwaul song segued into it. > Caterwaul [21] Diminutive Do Se Do The Nature of Things One of my *many* favorite Caterwaul songs. > k d lang Western Stars Shadowland Not my favorite song, though of course I like it very much. It shows off her voice, and also fit with the set. > Dolly Parton [27] Jolene Best of Forget the name, forget the lyrics and forget that this song was a hit. Try to listen as if you're hearing it for the first time. This is a *GREAT* song! Her best and my favorite. I'm not really a "fan" of Dolly's, I've only got a few albums, but I love her voice and I love her as a person and I deeply admire her for lots of reasons. I *despise* the fact that she seems to be better known for her big hair and her bosem than for her songwriting and vocal talents. Grrrr..... > Victoria Williams Frying Pan Happy Come Home I couldn't resist, since the funniest description of Victoria I ever heard was "Dolly Parton on acid!" I love this artist, I love this album, I love this song. Victoria mixes down-home wisdom with worldly pain and perception in a way that I've never heard before. There are hurdles to be jumped to fully appreciate Victoria, but if you get past them, there are beautiful gems and jewels just waiting for you to revel in. > Le Mystere des voix Bulgares Svatba Volume I I put my favorite song on the HGP. This is my 2nd favorite. > Cocteau Twins [22] Treasure Cicely I love this song, but I especially love the Svatba/Cicely segue. > The Sugarcubes [23] Planet Here Today, Tomorrow, Next Week "Birthday" probably would have been a better choice to show off Bjork's voice, but I really love this one and it's not as well-known. > Marianne Faithfull Falling from Grace A Child's Adventure My favorite song by her. > Dagmar Krause The Mandelay Song Supply and Demand And now, for something completely different... > Akiko Yano Rose Garden [?] And now, for something *really* completely different... > Danielle Dax Inky Bloaters Dark Adapted Eye Picking a song from Dark Adapted Eye was probably the hardest thing to do in the entire tape series. While nearly everything on these tapes were carefully chosen and experimented with before recording, to see what "went well" with what, this was absolutely last-second. Literally. I kept flipping through songs just couldn't decide. Finally, 5 seconds before "Rose Garden" ended, I chose this. > Diamanda Galas Double-Barrel Prayer You Must Be Certain of the Devil It's 'jes a little 'ole pop song. Hehe. I wanted to put "Wild Women with Steak Knives" but it's 18 minutes long. > Nina Hagen Dread Love Nunsexmonkrock This was another hard, last-second choice. I love every "song." My very favorite is "Smack Jack" but it was too long to fit. This is my favorite album by Nina, and was my first foray into total bizarreness. I actually hated this album the first couple of times I listened, but "Cosma Shiva" caught my ear and I gave it more chances. Then I saw the video to "Smack Jack" and that was it, I was hooked. > Nina Hagen Taitschi-Tarot Nunsexmonkrock It was short, and it fit. I'd like to use this again sometime in an "Aisian" set. I had various piles of tapes and CDs set aside for each tape I wanted to do. I had "leftovers" from each of the tapes, but this pile seemed to have more than the others. Artists (besides K/J/H) I had to leave off included: Sally Oldfield, Lotte Lenya, Rickie Lee Jones, Urzula Dudziak, Maura O'Connell, Enya, Maria McKee, Tanita Tikaram, Natalie Merchant, Toyah and *lots* of others. Many women were put on other tapes because there wasn't enough room on this one. To be continued... Vickie ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 1 Apr 92 01:13:41 EST From: woj@remus.rutgers.edu Subject: ectorhodes and highways vickie asked us all to post about our happy-nings, so seeing that others have, i might as well too. those of you following the pre-show preparations knew that jessica and i were going to drive up to albany together. but neither of us had really made any effort to plan this. so i guess it was on tuesday, i flipped a coin (virtually!) and decided that i'd drive. she said that she could get up to my place around 3:30 or so on wednesday afternoon, so we were all set. or so we thought. wednesday around 2:45 pm or so, i get an enegmatic note from jess saying, "we might have a problem". i don't completely recall the circumstances, but i think that her original ride to my place decided to back out and then she had to scurry to find dave steiner and convince him to drive up her to morristown. a bit later i get the "okay" sign and head home to await their arrival. and waited. and waited. in retrospect, i probably should have gotten the car gassed up then since they didn't get to my house until around 5pm. oops. but we finally got on the road not long after they arrived (and i fed the cavalier some gasoline). the trip itself was thankfully uneventful until we reached albany when we discovered that there was no exit for "broadway" off of i-787. we backtracked and eventually discovered how to find the econolodge (surviving the empire state plaza parking garage in the process and the long decent down state street towards broadway) where most everyone else had already arrived. took advantage of the food that everyone else had thoughtfully bought and brought (many thanks to kiri for bagelry bagels!). babbled with all the ectofolk that i hadn't met yet (david, angelos specifically) and eventu- ally was herded into the gregmobile to be driven to the qe2. since i was enjoying the chocolate covered coffee beans (mmmm!), i did not notice vickie standing outside the qe2 with doug when we drove by. but honestly, i was not surprised in the least. greg had mentioned that mystery.person was coming and even though he avowed that it was not vickie, i somehow knew that she would be there. it probably would not have seemed complete if she didn't...but she did! and it was most fun to finally put a person with the voice that i had talked to often on the phone and babbled with over the net in the past. an aside: if you ever want to really annoy vickie, make her guess who you are when you first meet her. drives her nuts! :) i've already gone into the albany show, so i'll pass on that for now. i should say that the qe2 did not strike me as that seedy. but then, i frequent places like that all the time in new york city in search of cool tunes...it was small, but seedy? i didn't think so... afterwards, we all piled back into greg's station wagon and drove back to the econolodge and hung out in the ectosuite for a while longer. i think we (jessica, dave, meredith and myself) finally left sometime around 5am. boy, i'm glad that i had decided to take that thursday and friday off from work. about 30 minutes out of albany, i pulled over and let dave drive the rest of the way back to my house. i trust myself driving in snow and driving while tired - but not both at the same time. plus, with a cargo of three special people, i wasn't in the mood to try and push my luck. so i sat back and zoned in the back seat. a couple hours later, i woke up to find us shrouded in snow - lots of it! i think about seven inches finally fell in morristown - not that i was in any condition to enjoy it any way but vicariously. when we got back to my apt, i discovered that all i had to eat around the house was toast. so i treated the four of us to toast and ice tea. a most potent combo - equally only by cold pizza and warm milk. after a shower to regain humanity, i collpased for the better part of the day. happily too, i might add... and i think i shall go collapse now too. the philly tale can wait for later... woj ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
